Adams still used his line so he could reach him. “Hello boss man” Ali said into the phone as silently as could. He couldn’t afford to let Hadiza or anyone listen to this conversation. “Speak up brother. I can barely hear you” Adams was so loud that it seemed Ali’s phone was on speakers. “This guy is a Hoover” he thought as he lowered the volume. “I am getting married. I really appreciate your effort and I’ll never forget what you did but at this point I want us to keep it on the down low now. I hope you understand that we can’t afford to ruin the hard work that we have done.” He tried as much as he could to let him know he was not shutting him out. “I understand you bro, I’ll delete your number and you do the same.” He replied. He didn’t care what he thought. After all, he was never his friend and he wouldn’t miss him. “No. I am breaking my SIM. It’s a clean slate for my mate.” Ali announced. That also sounded good to Adams. “I am happy for you.” He said and hung up. Against his earlier decision, Ali kept the SIM and only erased all records of contact with Adams and Rihanat. He still kept the SIM and it remained active. OKAY, SO I WAS SILENT THROUGH OUT THE WEEKEND, GET THIS AS AN APOLOGY!!! ![]() NINETEEN Chief Barnabas had a huge interest in politics and wanted to go into it full time but didn’t trust anyone enough to leave his company for. The only person he would give it to was his son. It wouldn’t hurt too much if his son squandered his money. It would be fine so far the squanderer was family, and Ali was the only family he had got. What hurt was that the son was not serious about the business or about anything else. He was just rebellious. Not that having a rebellious child was strange but everything should have its place and time. There should come a time in the life of a person when he grows up and do what was expected of him. Ali seemed like he would never get to that stage. He had tried all he could to make him see reasons to grow up but nothing seemed to be working. So when he met that girl and turned the grown man he had always wanted him to be, Barnabas knew it was no miracle, he changed because of that girl and it would definitely be stupid to let him lose such a girl. Again, the chief wanted to be sure he was not forming grown up. He feared his son might just be trying to impress the girl. For how long would the impression last? Would he not get tired? Did the girl love Ali like he did her? There is one way to find out, observe them. He invited them over for dinner the next day just so he could look through. After the dinner, his mind was made. He noticed the love was actually one sided. The girl did not look like a girl so intoxicated with love. Only one of them had a burning desire and that was his son. He had fire in his eyes, while the girl had snow in hers. Like a concerned father would, Chief called his son to air his concerns but the son had explanations. She had trust issues. She was badly hurt. She needed time to heal and heat up her broken and cold heart. Chief was not so convinced by the explanation. He couldn’t understand why winning a girl over would be an issue. If someone was charming enough, his chances would never be blocked by some sad episodes in the girl’s life. On the contrary, he would light up her world and she would fall head over heels. Be it as it may, the chief decided to take it as a matter of duty to make the girl feel at home and grow a sense of security. “We need to start planning a wedding.” Ali said, he meant it as a proposal but didn’t take the conventional route. A ‘no’ would literarily kill him. He didn’t have to face untimely death anyways. She had decided already to please him despite her heart. “Yes we should.” She replied, thinking she had nothing to lose any which way. Following the positive response should be the actual planning but before that, Ali had one last thing to do, he had to remove everything that could later work against him. He would cut all ties with Adams and Rihanat. Nothing should come back to haunt him. He couldn’t reach Rihanat because she had already made the decision he was just making the moment she got Jaye back in her life. She wouldn’t have anyone or anything break her happiness, so she had stopped using the SIM with which she communicated with Ali. He kept it far away in a place only she could locate. It would only be useful in an emergency. |
*** “What a genius I am! Ali will marry Hadiza next Saturday, and Jaye has been locked up again with Rihanat. All made possible by one smart plan by the great Adams. I deserve a medal. I am the real deal.” Adam praised himself as he thought of the whole stuff once more. He lied in his bed, hand fan in hand enjoying alone the feat he had accomplished. Then he realized he in the end, after all planned and done, he was really single. “Who am I in love with?” he asked himself, knowing clearly who it was. He loved someone but worked with commitment to hook her up with someone else. Yet, he felt love was not always about happy ending. He was showing his own love by letting her be with the person she would be happy with, and that was fine. Maybe it was not fine, it didn’t really matter, he decided. |
MY DEAR PEOPLE, ITS MONDAY... I HOPE YOUR WEEKEND WAS DOPE. LEZ GO TO THE NEXT EIGHTEEN After months of persistently gentle show of affection, Hadiza realized she had conscience after all, though her heart had ceased to exist. She felt terrible anytime Ali came around. The guy had something about him. His confidence, calmness and manliness spoke for him at least. The way he talked and listened to her, his attention… everything about him was awesome. He deserved to be loved but she, something was wrong with her. She just couldn’t fall in love with him, not only him though. No man would ever take her heart again. She concluded that should have to either return what she can and take a walk or despite the heart, accept the man anyways. She chose the second option; it was only wise to be as humane as possible. She didn’t have to be another monster. The happiness that the development brought to Ali’s life was evident in all he did. When Chief Barnabas found out the reason for the new found commitment and dedication of his son to the company was a girl, he pushed for a permanent union between them. “If Ali should continue like this, I am sure the company will be in safe hands, he must marry that girl.” He told himself. Like Ali, Rihanat had used her opportunity immensely well. She was with Jaye all throughout his stay in the hospital. As if unleashing all the love she had not been able to express for months, she took care of him and made sure he knew that she still loved him despite all that had happened. Sometimes, she would cry when she remembered she was involved in the plot that landed Jaye in the hospital, and Jaye would comfort her. “I am sorry for all that I made you go through. I promise I’ll get better and make it up to you” Jaye would promise with the feeling of guilt all over him. He knew he didn’t love her, but she deserved to be happy. When he got out of hospital, he made sure to ensure Rihanat never felt bad again, at least not from his actions. He did virtually everything he could do to please her. She was his best companion. Eventually, he decided to take it a step further. “After all, she’s been there before that bitch, and she still remained.” He reminded himself. One beautiful evening, he drew Rihanat close and said the three words into her ear. “I love you” he said though he was not sure. She was still processing what she just heard when he dazed her by planting a deep soft kiss on her lips and released butterflies in her stomach. |
