According to him, Moscow tried for decades to convey some simple things to the West. "Guys, the Soviet Union collapsed. In its recent update on the situation in the country, the agency warned about a "rising level of violence against civilians," saying that over the weekend, over 30 civilians were killed and 20 others wounded as a result of armed attacks in the Mahagi territory, Ituri province. It was noted that insecurity only in Ituri increased the vulnerability of more than one million people. "This area has already been the scene of numerous attacks resulting from intercommunal tensions. In November and December of last year, 30 civilians were killed and more than 100,000 were displaced," the agency said in a statement. Last month, the UN suspended all humanitarian flights to conflict zones in North Kivu and Ituri after an attack on one of its helicopters. However, the suspension was lifted two days later, except for helicopter flights. The OCHA stated that over the past year, the situation "has been exacerbated by a spike in violence," especially in North Kivu where over 600,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since March 2022. Meanwhile, in neighboring Ituri, local communities experience "inter-communal massacres." It was noted that the DRC is a scene of a major complex crisis with the population affected by conflict, epidemics and natural disasters. Against this backdrop, the UN agency underscored that despite "the international context marked by many overlapping crises," it continues to provide relief aid, including food, medicines, and protection services. "Humanitarian assistance is not the solution to the humanitarian crisis, but it remains crucial to meet the immediate needs of millions of affected families," said the Humanitarian Coordinator in DRC Bruno Lemarquis. According to the UN, the country has the largest number of internally displaced people on the African continent. Over six million people are displaced with the majority of them in the eastern provinces, where there has been a resurgence of hostilities since last year. More than 120 armed factions operate across major portions of eastern DRC, including the rebel March 23 Movement, also known as M23, which launched an uprising against the country's government, seizing large parts of the state's territory. Tehran wants stronger ties with Moscow amid Western sanctions, according to its economy minister Iran is aiming to expand its partnership with Russia in the energy sector, including projects involving nuclear power and renewables, the country's economy minister Ehsan Khandouzi said on Tuesday. The pledge comes as Moscow and Tehran look to boost economic ties to offset Western sanctions. “The prospect of cooperation in the field of ‘new energy’ and renewable energy sources, as well as in the field of other types of energy, including peaceful nuclear energy, certainly causes great interest and motivation to expand economic relations with Russia,” Khandouzi told RIA Novosti. Russia is building a second reactor at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in Iran, which is currently the largest joint project between the two nations. The first reactor unit at the plant was completed with Russian assistance and connected to Iran’s national power grid in 2011. A contract for the construction of a third reactor has also been signed. Russia launched supplies of nuclear fuel for Bushehr in 2007, a step both Washington and Moscow said removed the need for Iran to have its own uranium enrichment program. Chinese President Xi Jinping has completed the program of his state visit to Moscow and has left Russia on Wednesday morning, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene. The Chinese leader’s plane took off from Moscow’s Vnukovo-2 airport after a packed two-day program of talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on one-on-one and in the expanded circle of delegates. Russia has become the first country Xi Jinping visited after his re-election for a third term by the National People's Congress (parliament). A solemn ceremony was held on the occasion of the Chinese president’s departure. The Chinese and the Russian state flags were raised and the anthems of the two countries were played. The Chinese leader walked on a red carpet to his plane, accompanied by a military orchestra. Xi Jinping was seen off by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko and several other officials. Xi Jinping’s state visit to Russia has kicked off on Monday. The Chinese president invited his Russian counterpart to visit China during an informal meeting. 'Against Deviations': Uganda's Parliament Passes Law Banning Identification as LGBTQ Uganda is widely known for its strong anti-LGBTQ sentiment with same-sex relations being illegal in the East African country. The nation’'s President Yoweri Museweni is a long-time opponent of legitimizing the LGBTQ community, saying that homosexuality is not something that should be normalized or celebrated. The Ugandan parliament has passed an anti-gay law that proposes new penalties for homosexual intercourse and criminalizes anyone identifying as LGBTQ. This move has come as the country's lawmakers argue that the current ban on same-sex relations is insufficient. The 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Bill was introduced by Asuman Basalirwa, a member of parliament, at the beginning of this month. According to the lawmaker, the purpose of the bill is to protect the culture, religious and family values of the Ugandan people "from acts that are likely to promote sexual promiscuity in this country." “The objective of the bill was to establish a comprehensive and enhanced legislation to protect traditional family values, our diverse culture, our faiths, by prohibiting any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and the promotion or recognition of sexual relations between persons of the same sex,” Basalirwa said. Apart from expanding on the criminalization of same-sex intercourse, the act bans promoting and abetting homosexuality, as well conspiring to engage in same-sex relations, prescribing jail terms of up to 5 years. It also criminilazes those who "hold out as a lesbian, gay, transgender, a queer, or any other sexual or gender identity that is contrary to the binary categories of male and female," with a punishment of up to ten years in prison. The same penalty could be invoked against anyone, who engages in "same-sex activity." According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), if the bill comes into effect, it will be the first to outlaw identifying as LGBTQ. Moreover, violations under the law specify capital punishment for "aggravated homosexuality," which among other things applies in cases of sexual relations involving those infected with HIV and underage minors. The legislation was passed by the parliament on Tuesday, after a roll call ordered by the House speaker. It was supported by the overwhelming majority of legislators. (this makes me very proud as an African) Following the vote, the bill will now be presented to the president, who may choose to sign it into law or use his veto. In his recent speech, President Museveni accused Western nations of "trying to impose their practices on other people," saying that Uganda won't follow "people who are lost," referring to West's tendency to normalize homosexuality. "The homosexuals are deviations from normal. Why? Is it by nature or nurture? We need to answer these questions," President Museveni was quoted as saying by media. I've come across multiple homosexuals in Canada(at work, at school etc)...none of them are ok mentally (although, a lot of people in Canada who aren't LGBTQ are afflicted with debilitating mental diseases...including those in govt circles)...I agree with the notion that homosexuality is a mental disease. HRW called the bill a "more egregious version" of the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2014, which stipulated that "aggravated homosexuality" should be punishable by life imprisonment, but was ruled invalid by a court on procedural grounds.
