Zelensky Clings to Artemovsk to Show Hefty Western Military Aid ‘Not in Vain,’ Russian Analyst Says


Despite huge losses in terms of men and materiel in Artemovsk, Ukrainian forces are desperately trying to hold onto the town because Kiev apparently wants to justify incessant and hefty deliveries of Western military aid to Ukraine, military expert and political analyst Ivan Konovalov told Sputnik.

A German newspaper recently reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny have "fundamentally different views" on the situation in the town of Artemovsk, known in Ukraine by its pre-Soviet name Bakhmut.
While Zaluzhny insists on the retreat of Ukrainian forces from Artemovsk "for tactical reasons", Kiev authorities adhere to the stance that it’s necessary to hold on to the town, according to the newspaper.

"[...] The Ukrainian leadership, and especially Mr. Zelensky, who needs to prove to the West that the Ukrainian forces can still surprise and demonstrate that Western military aid is not in vain," cannot but cling to Artemovsk, Konovalov said.

When asked why Ukrainian troops continue to hold on to the town despite their huge losses there, the Russian military expert said that "Mr. Zelensky does not care about the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s casualties." (I don't care too..Russia should wipe out all of them).

"His task is to show to his [Western] curators that this or that settlement is still under Ukrainian forces’ control. And at what cost it takes place is all the same to him. He is only interested in one thing: his image in front of Western curators and arms suppliers, because it is related to how long he will be at the helm of Ukraine," Konovalov pointed out.

He added that "on the other hand, Zaluzhny knows full well that from a strategic point of view," the possible fall of Artemovsk "can result in a catastrophe that will shake the entire central frontline.” Konovalov suggested that Kiev’s main problem in Artemovsk is that “a political necessity has clashed with military expediency.”


According to the expert, “the situation [in the town] is obvious and the fall of Artemovsk is a foregone conclusion."
The remarks followed the Wagner private military group announcing last week that they had surrounded Artemovsk, located in Donbass, following months of fighting that has taken a heavy toll on Kiev's forces, developments that come amid Russia's ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.

How will one just reading an heading of a post know that the op was comparing a ww2 battle to a present battle.

A careful look at the stupid article,you won't find any reference to the battle of Stalligard nor will you find were the op was trying to compare the war in bakhmut to the one in ww2.

Also the Ukrainian were also part of the old Soviet Union and also fought the battle of Stalligard
So when I see you Putin punks celebrating Stalligard as if other people apart from present day ethic Russians fought the war.

The fact that you had to say all these without looking at the clearer picture the op is painting is ludicrous.
Instead of being a nit-picker, understand the the op is likening the battle of bakhmut to that of Stalingrad because it is one of the most bloodiest and fierce battle so far in this war. I know it is outrageous to compare that yet, more like comparing a Toyota Corolla to a Bugatti Chiron, but yes, the op is not preposterous.
Also I know Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd in the 1960s.

Zelensky at odds with top general

Commander Zaluzhny called for a withdrawal from a key city, but the president has refused, the newspaper reported.

An internal conflict is underway between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and General Valery Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, according to government sources cited by Bild on Monday. Kiev insiders told the German tabloid that the military commander called for a withdrawal from a key Donbass city weeks ago.

Zaluzhny advised the president to abandon Artyomovsk, known as Bakhmut in Ukraine, rather than keep defending it as Russian troops threatened to take control of the city, the newspaper reported. However the Ukrainian leader declared the city a fortress, and refused to pull troops back.

Russian forces have made notable advances in the fight for Artyomovsk this year. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the private military company Wagner Group, claimed last Friday that it was “de-facto completely surrounded,” with only one road available for possible evacuation.

According to US media, Washington has been urging Zelensky to pull out of Artyomovsk and focus on preparing a major counteroffensive for the spring using Western-supplied weapons, but the Ukrainian president fears a morale hit that such a move would cause.

The city is part of a 70km Ukrainian defense line created since Kiev initiated the fighting in Donbass in 2014. US officials have assessed that its loss to Russia would not affect the strategic situation.

Bild sources claimed that Ukrainian troops on the ground in Artyomovsk “do not understand why the city is being held” and believe they should have withdrawn a long time ago. Zelensky recently stated that Ukrainian forces would defend it as long as it “remains reasonable” to do so.

The German tabloid also noted that Zaluzhny’s popularity for leading the military campaign against Russia makes him a viable challenger to Zelensky in a potential presidential run. The general has not publicly announced any ambition to run for office, but rumors have been circulating in Ukraine for months regarding Zelensky’s concerns over possible competition.

🇷🇺 Russian President Vladimir Putin officially opened the 70-km Moscow metro’s Big Circle Line (BCL) on Wednesday via video link, the longest subway metro line in the world.

The metro line was constructed from 2011 to 2022. The first section of the BCL opened in 2018, and another 20-km section, which is the longest in the history of the capital's metro, was launched in December 2021.

The BCL has 31 stations, with 24 of those providing 47 interchanges to existing and future stations of the capital's metro.

Maksim Liksutov, deputy mayor of Moscow for transport, said that the BCL will serve as an impetus to the capital's development for decades to come, adding that it would help decrease the traffic flow on the city's highways by up to 15 percent, and would decongest metro lines by up to 25 percent.
