The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has asked traders in the state to be ready to pay taxes and levies for the development of the state. Obiano said this while inaugurating the Traders’ House built by the Amalgamated Market Traders Association of Anambra State on Wednesday in Onitsha, the Anambra State capital. Obiano, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, noted that taxes were needed by the state government to meet various social and infrastructural obligations it owes the citizenry. “The government had performed excellently well in security, construction and re-construction of roads as well as environmental cleanliness, which all of you can attest to. “But we cannot do all these and sustain them without your cooperation through paying your taxes and levies; since traders make up 75 per cent of the population of the state. “Again, it is clear to everyone in the country that allocation from the Federation Account is dwindling and we need to shore up our Internal Revenue Generation through streamlining our taxes and levies generation,’’ he said. The governor also urged the traders to help in keeping the state, especially Onitsha clean. He, however, debunked the rumour that commercial motorcycle operators were banned in the state, adding that the government only stopped them from plying some major roads that could pose danger to them and their passengers. Earlier, the Commissioner for Industries, Trade and Commerce, Mr. Ifeatu Onejeme, had said that the new secretariat of traders would serve as a unifying factor that would bring peace and progress to traders in the state. Onejeme noted that the government was putting electricity in most markets, adding that very soon the state would have markets that operate 24 hours daily. In his address, the President-General of AMATAS, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo, said that the completion of the Traders’ House in record time portrayed the leadership of traders as visionary and purposeful. Ezenwankwo, who thanked the government for its financial support, also lauded the contribution of Chief Poly Emenike, who donated N8m for the completion of the complex. |

The Imo Police Command in Owerri said on Monday that one person was killed and several others seriously injured when police operatives swooped on alleged cultists terrorising members of the Egbu Community in Owerri. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Imo, Mr Dave Akinremi, made this known during a news briefing at the command’s Headquarters in Owerri. He also said that several other alleged cultists were arrested during the raid which resulted in a gun duel. Akinremi said the suspects were arrested sequel to information that 15 members of the group were having a meeting near Egbu Girls Secondary School. He said that upon receiving the information, operatives of the command immediately swung into action, leading to an exchange of gun fire. Akinremi said that three of the suspects had gunshot wounds and were arrested while others escaped. He said one Chimaobi Iheme (a.k.a Saka), identified as the head of the cult group, gave up the ghost while receiving treatment. He said that the suspects arrested at the scene included Chinwekene Opara (25) and Tochukwu Amarikwa (24). The DCP said the suspects have made useful statements and confessed to being members of a cult known as (a.k.a ). According to him, items recovered from the suspects included three locally made pistols, seven live cartridges, four expended cartridges, two cutlasses and one hand axe. Other items were six GSM phones, one Keke NAPEP and one motorcycle. Akinremi urged members of the public to assist the police by providing useful information about criminal activities. He also urged parents to warn their children and wards against engaging in criminal acts, stressing that the police would continue to work assiduously to ensure that peace reigned in the society. The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, on Monday said Boko Haram insurgency has undermined the educational progress of Northern Nigeria. He said five decades after Nigeria’s independence, the Northern region is lagging behind educationally and lamented that insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country has widened the gap. Mr. Sani stated this in Kaduna when he visited the Kaduna National Library. He said, “I am deeply concerned about the state of Libraries and the whole education in Nigeria, particularly Northern Nigeria. It is unfortunate that five decades after our independence, the northern part of the country is still lagging behind educationally in comparative with what is happening in the southern part of Nigeria. There is low level of enrollment in primary, secondary and post education levels. “So, there is a general relative lack of interest in education in the north in comparative to the south. There is also low level of investment by state governments in the north and previous national government on areas of education in the north. “There is also no doubt that insurgency in the north-eastern part of the country has seriously undermined the educational progress of Northern Nigeria. And the image of the north and northern people nationally and internationally is an image of people that are opposed or resistant to western education. “The North is not a region that could be termed illiterate. We have a large number of people who can read and write, even if it is not English. But, what is needed here is to see how the states in the north could come together and tackle this issue of education emergency. “The north and particularly Kaduna State cannot make progress without heavy investment in the area of education.” He said. He also lamented that Nigerian political elites, having succeeded in destroying the educational system, now take refuge in sending their children to schools in Dubai, Malaysia and other western countries. While identifying heavy investment in education as a way forward for Nigeria, the Senator pledged to come to the aide of the Kaduna National Library in the areas of books, furniture and conferences in order to promote reading culture. Earlier, the Head of Kaduna National Library branch, Mohammed Umar, highlighted the many functions of the library and some of its challenges. He was happy the Senator visited and said he hopes the visit will translate to improvement on the library facilities. |

The Alaafin of Oyo Empire, his imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, is undoubtedly a monarch not with only wit but also with class. To say he is an enigma by every standard is an understatement, as many who had an interaction with him testify that “a moment with him is like an exploratory adventure through the school of history”. The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi III, no doubt, one of Africa’s most powerful and most influential kings, has lived two decades and over half a century into decades of heeding the natural call of the gods and his people. Here is an X-ray into the life of the great Traditional Icon, who has held the Oyo Empire together in response to the covenant he made with his people and the gods. 1. Oba Lamidi Adeyemi was an insurance officer who became the Alaafin of Oyo. The contest to his emergence began in 1968, when he was invited along with ten others from his ruling house to contest for the vacant stool of the Oyo Empire. As it was the custom of the land, there were three parameters with which the contestants were judged. *First was eligibility, *second was popularity and *third, the stamina for the huge responsibilities of the office of the Alaafin of Oyo. Oba Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi emerged the first; defeating ten others after a vigorous screening exercise. However, due to what observer attested to be a political interference, the then government “refused to endorse my appointment, saying the procedure was not right” were the words of this great monarch during one of the numerous interviews he granted. So the process started over again with the same result the second and the third time. Interestingly, despite the immense pressure upon the Oyomesi ‘against his candidature by the government, the Oyomesi stood it ground. Thus the process was put in abeyance until after the civil war, when the whole process started all over again. To the relief of many and chagrin of the opposition, Oba Adeyemi III was elected the winner and was finally chosen by the kingmakers on November 18, 1970 and then moved into the palace after completing the necessary rites under the tulelage of the Oyomesi. In the process, he was inducted into the mysteries of various gods like the Ifa mysteries, and the Sango mysteries. He was also made to undergo these inductions in order to be the direct representative of these deities on earth. He was taken through these processes so as to know all the chants, the proverbs, oriki of all the past Obas. 2.At the federal level, he was worked with General Yakubu Gowon, (1971-75); General Muritala Mohammed (1977-76); General Olusegun Obasanjo (1976-1979); Alhaji Shehu Shagari, the first executive president (1979-83); General Muhammed Buhari (1984-85); General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (1985-93); General Sani Abacha (1998-99); General Abdulsalami Abubakar Chief Olusegun Obasanjo (1999-2007); and president Umaru Yar’Adua. 3.During the agitation for the state creation in 1975, the Alaafin was first to fire the salvo, coupled with the efforts of others, the old Oyo, Ogun and Old Ondo States were created. In recognition of his priceless and modest contributions to national development, he was invited as the only Oba from Yoruba land to perform the holy pilgrimage to Mecca with General Muritala Muhammed. Other traditional rulers on the trip were the late Emir of Gwandu and the Otaru of Auchi, late Momodu Ikelebe II. 4.The Federal Government honoured this great achiever with the national honour of CFR at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, in 1979. 5. In 1980, the Federal Government appointed Kabiyesi Oba Adeyemi as the pioneering Chancellor of then newly established University of Sokoto, now Uthman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, for a first four-year tenure. At the expiration of that first tenure, the senate and council of the University recommended him for another term. The president and visitor to the university graciously approved the request, thus he was appointed for a second term. And at the expiration of the second term, in an unprecedented manner, has was appointed for yet another term, the third term, thus giving him a total of 12 years as the Chancellor of the university, a feat yet to be matched by anybody in the annals of chancellorship of university of Nigeria. 6.The monarch, in January 1988, installed Chief MKO Abiola as the Aare Ona Kankanfo in recognition of Abiola’s contributions to the social, economic, cultural and political development of Yoruba land and Nigeria at large. Two years later, the Federal Government under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, appointed the Alaafin as the Amiru Hajj operation to lead the Muslim faithful in the 21 states of the federation. 7.His sport as many may have known and as many will find incredulous, is a sportsman. Before his ascension on to the throne of his forefathers, he trained and still trains as a boxer. He runs; jogs and plays football. Typically of him if time permits, he does as much as six kilometres and skips the rope. 9. In terms of religion, he is a practising Muslim but describes himself as being liberal and a free mixer who was raised up in a strict Christian home and also went to a Catholic school. 8.Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, Iku Baba Yeye, on January 14, 2015, clocked 44 years on the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo. Muhideen Adedeji Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, officially opened a new sales, marketing and service subsidiary in Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria, June 9 2015. Bosch group sees Africa in general and Nigeria in particular as an important long term growth market. “We see high potential for our business in Africa. Thanks to its rapidly growing population, low median age, increasing middle class, and optimistic economic forecast we expect a significant demand for Bosch product ‘invented for life’,” said Uwe Raschke, member of Bosch’s board of management at the opening ceremony of the company’s office in Lagos. The company is operating a sales, marketing and service office in Lagos, covering all of Bosch’s four business sectors which are Mobility Solutions, Industrial Technology, Consumer Goods, and Energy and Building Technology. Bosch group also said the company will particularly focus on catering to demand in the food processing as well as energy and infrastructure industries- working closely with local partners to ensure the best possible customer benefit and, on a larger scale, the benefit of Nigeria’s economy and Society. Also, with about 170 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country as well the largest economy in Africa. “By opening a location in Nigeria, we’re taking a decisive step forward in expanding our presence in West Africa”, says Markus Thill, the Bosch Group’s President for Africa. The company generated sales of some 350 million euro in Africa in 2014. Including the new location in Nigeria, Bosch will have a presence in ten African countries by the end of this year. The company currently employs more than 750 associates in Africa. Depending on the further business development, Bosch plans to increase this figure in the next years. In October 2014, Bosch set up an alliance with the Nigerian government organization, National Automotive Council (NAC) in the automotive aftermarket sector to pave the way for the development of technical automotive skills and the establishment of a network of automotive workshop in Nigeria. “As the number of cars on Nigerian streets rises, so will the demand for skilled maintenance and state-of-the-art repair workshops. The two partners plan to offer technical training as well as innovative solutions in the area of workshop and test equipment to the operators of automotive workshop throughout the country.” “Our partnership with the NAC demonstrates our long-term commitment to Nigeria. Bosch aims to further develop the technical competences of the local workforce especially in the automotive industry for the mutual success of the Nigerian industry and Bosch’s business in this country”, said Markus Thill. Bosch actively promotes talented young people in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2008, it was one of the initiators of Afrika kommit, an initiative of German industry for junior managers from sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2008, Bosch has been part of a group of some 20 companies who offer scholarships to African junior executives so that they can spend a year in Germany completing a professional training programme. The goal of the programme is to foster mutual exchange and learning between budding African executives and German companies. SOURCE: Witness. |
