The Lagos State Government on Friday said that from July 1, 2016, it would commence a total enforcement against street trading and street hawkerbanning their activities across the metropolis would take its full course. Speaking at a live interview session on Television Continental, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode said that the renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003 which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis. The Governor, while sympathising with the family of a street hawker who was knocked down by an articulated truck while trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline along Maryland Bus stop on Wednesday, regretted that the situation led to the destruction of public assets. “It is not in our DNA to allow someone to just die by road accident or the way it happened in respect of the incident. But beyond the fact that we lost one person while crossing the road as a result of evading arrest by KAI officials, I need to tell Lagosians that over 49 buses were actually destroyed and it is costing us like almost N139m to put those buses back on the road,” he said. Consequently, Governor Ambode said the State Executive Council has resolved to enforce the Law, which according to him makes both the hawker and the buyer liable of the offence. “The issue is we need to enforce our laws because we already have a law in respect of that and then there is a clause in it which says the buyer and the seller are both liable and that we are going to fine them either N90, 000 or a six month jail term. “What we are doing on traffic is that we are introducing new strategies to eliminate traffic, but Lagos being a cosmopolitan city, you cannot totally eliminate it but now this is the case, in the next few days, you will see on the street of Lagos signs that will be warning you that buyers and hawkers should be aware that there are consequences,” Governor Ambode said. http://punchng.com/lagos-jail-street-hawkers-july-1-ambode/ 5 Likes 2 Shares

The Lagos State Government has announced measures to raise the dignity of commuters and commercial vehicle drivers operating in the state. It said efforts were being made towards rebranding the public transport system which would incorporate the major modes of transportation. The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Dayo Mobereola, who made the announcement during the 2016 annual ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, said the initiative would involve replacing the mini-buses, popularly called Danfo, with high-capacity buses. He also said the state government would introduce commuter protection number plates and body tags on buses to show their routes and enforce colour uniformity on all public transport systems in the state. The commissioner said the government had held consultation with road transport operators on the need to rebrand and professionalise the transport sub-sector. “Lagos State motor parks would be restructured in such a way that alcohol and illicit substances would not be there. “We are going to teach transport operators in the state behavioural etiquette and how to talk to commuters,” he added. According to him, the present administration is determined to have public transport system that supports its megacity status where tendencies for violence are curbed, while drivers and conductors are retrained and registered. Mobereola said arrangements were almost concluded to phase out the 14-seater commuter buses being used by commercial drivers and replace them with 30-seater buses with air conditioners. He also hinted about plans to enforce the use of approved uniforms for commercial drivers and conductors, describing such as “a critical rebranding strategy that signposts confidence, trust, loyalty and stability.” He said the “new vista of professionalism and identity anchored on unique number/dress code” would be implemented by the next quarter. He said the taxi scheme, rail and water transport systems, would be covered in the transformation arrangements. The commissioner said the rebranding would affect the state vehicle inspection service. For instance, apart from increasing the staff strength by 200, the operation of its patrol officers had been extended to Saturday and Sunday. “We intend a complete the reorientation of the VIS and strengthen its efficiency and effectiveness, including the extension of the area offices to 30,” Mobereola said, adding that the construction of the VIS headquarters at Ojodu would provide a befitting and conducive environment for its operation. He said the state government had plans to restructure motor parks in the state and introduce holistic ticketing system, through which people could download from the Internet and use for any mode of transport in the state without any hitch. http://www.punchng.com/lasg-plans-rebrand-transport-sector/ 14 Likes 1 Share |
