ComputersRe: Building A Home Theater PC (HTPC) by bigboa: 12:59am On Oct 13, 2013
Nice 1 dude. Been wanting to stwrt this thread for a while. I've actually researched quite a few of 'em (even downloaded raspbmc in case I could get the raspberry pi).
Eventually decided to settle for WD n900 router with 1TB hdd on board as its also a hardware dlna server and pair this with lg 570 wifi smart tv...
Will post pics soon.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Begins Use Of Cement For Road Construction Against Asphalt. by bigboa: 1:33pm On Oct 12, 2013
Actually, this is kinda old. A number of consulting firms have been researching this for about 3 years as far as I know and Lafarge has a special road cement formulation already mastered and sold to special clients (Nigerian law only permits 1 type of cement to be sold as general purpose cement).
Anyway, this is likely to create publicity first for Dangote (Mr. Makoju is a director there, I think) and then secondarily for the rest. That said, the use of concrete is more cost effective when constructing long road stretches. For relatively shorter stretches with close deposits of asphalt (which we have in abundance in 9ja) , that is cheaper. My 2 cents.
ComputersRe: Win XP Or Win 7? by bigboa: 6:35pm On Oct 09, 2013
Depends on what you want to use it for. I personally prefer xp as a production os because it is "stripped down" and offers little resistance wrt application installation (eg, you can't run stuff like netmeeting or lan voip software except you use the browser based solutions or go online with ms meetingspace). Win7 however is nicer (eyecandy, eyecandy) for general home use etc. It's search feature is also great, imo.
ComputersRe: Bill Gates Said The Ctrl-alt-del Function Was A "Mistake" by bigboa: 10:35pm On Sep 26, 2013
Bully for you, BillyG.
I think ctrl-alt-del is pretty wizard.
Also, I don't think the dude who foisted the
frankenstein that is vista on us should give lectures
on the merits of simplicity in design.
ComputersRe: Global File Download Size Limits On A Network by bigboa: 4:40pm On Sep 18, 2013
@4llerB: You could consider changing your router altogether... Chert Computers at Funmilayo Okikiolu st (off Toyin) have an amazing netgear router/nas combo N900 that comes with 1Tb, user accounts, web file sharing out the box, dlna/upnp and definitely a usb port. All for 24k or thereabouts. Stumbled on their site recently and I'm most def getting one as its possibilities are mouthwatering...
@Leo: No probs guv. Dd-wrt and openwrt support a lot of tp-link and d-link rtrs. I also think tp-link have some sim card routers... the usb option works well for me though. I love to do lan stuff though cos you can't really rely on any isp in 9ja for now imo
ComputersRe: Global File Download Size Limits On A Network by bigboa: 12:49pm On Sep 17, 2013
@Leo: try uploading openwrt or dd-wrt firmware on a d-link, tp-link or linksys router and that should do the trick. Heck, you could even go cloud by plugging a 500gb to the thing and serving files from hfs although that's a bit tricky. wink
ComputersRe: Global File Download Size Limits On A Network by bigboa: 12:45pm On Sep 17, 2013
@henry: think he just means that there is no application layer gateway on the network (I.e. star) rather than an actual ibm token ring network...
ComputersRe: Global File Download Size Limits On A Network by bigboa: 9:37pm On Sep 15, 2013
What kind of router are you using? Is it a basic adsl type (linksys, tp-link, dlink) or an enterprise solution (cisco, juniper)? If its the first, then as Lord Reed suggested, you have to police traffic by imposing bandwidth limits. You could assign sticky ip addresses to the mac addresses and then give each user different data caps using the router. Desktop apps like cc proxy tend to have better flexibility though. If you're using an enterprise router though, this should be no problem as you can create access lists to rate limit the popular ports/services.
ComputersRe: HELPPPP!!!! My External Hard Disk Drive Is In Trouble by bigboa: 9:23pm On Sep 15, 2013
You could try booting into linux with a liveCD or via vmware or virtualbox. Then you can attempt to check it. You could also try chkdsk /f on command.com
ComputersRe: Hard drive Enclosure by bigboa: 9:16pm On Sep 15, 2013
You can get from computer village for 1k, 1.2k tops. Using a hdd enclosure is ok; the sensitivity to failure has to do more with the type of drive than the fact that it was extracted from your laptop viz ide (pin type) is more resilient than sata (strip type). Anyway, there is hardly any difference between the packaged hdds and your home made one (comparing them pricewise also shows the same).
If you're feeling sexy though, you could shell out for a nas box and go 21st century cloud (gangnam) style. Chert c9mputers at toyin street have a couple...

No big deal in this: Don Trump's grandmother was Elizabeth Christ and his father was named Fred Christ Trump.
They were originally from Germany so no South American connection there.

EducationRe: The Problem With HND Certificate – By Femi Olabisi by bigboa: 8:42pm On Feb 22, 2013
The essential reason for the disparity in the qualifications lies in the original purposes the institutions were conceptualized for. The aim of a mono/polytechnic is to produce a 'technician' I.e. a highly skilled craftsman while that of a university is to produce a more rounded individual. That is why a mono/polytechnic emphasizes physical work (eg fitting, machining, welding etc for engineering) while a University focuses on giving an individual a rounded education (This is also apparent from the btech vs bsc conundrum). The idea is to prepare different types of people: The Engineer and the Technician, the Accountant and the bookkeeper, the Doctor and the nurse.
