If Hamas releases those hostages every member of Hamas will be dead within few days. Hamas knows this, those hostages are their lifeline, the only reason some of them are still alive, so they are just being selfish and afraid too.
Israel can quickly rain hell on them once they have extracted all their citizens held hostage there, so Hamas want a concrete commitment from Isreal to cease all hostilities before they can trust them else they die with the hostages.

I think the best thing is to plan ahead. That means buying a cheap CCTV camera and installing in your living room and bedroom. So when such issues come up, you have video evidence instantly that proves you're innocent and you won't even need anything else to get away with it.
