*Bola Ige, Afenifere were founding members of PDP- Olawepo Hashim*

Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, a founding member of People's Democratic Party and former Presidential Candidate spoke with Tribune Newspaper in an exclusive interview.

In the interview, he spoke about the formation of PDP as a progressive party and recount how the party was hijacked by corrupt individuals.

He also explained that Late Chief Bola Ige and the Afenifere group were founding members of PDP.

You have always been seen as a progressive but back in 1998, PDP would appear to be a conservative party. What led you there?

No, it was not. Chief Solomon Lar was one of the progressive governors of the Second Republic. AlhajiAbubakarRimi was one of the progressive governors of the Second Republic. In fact, majority of the northern progressives, who were in the peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Nigerian Peoples Party (NPP) were driving forces of the PDP. As a matter of fact, we formed the PDP with late Chief Bola Ige. They walked out of the PDP because they wanted us to automatically zone the Presidency to the South-West. I was in that meeting when there was a big confrontation between Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi and then Chief Adebanjo led the walkout. He stormed out of the meeting and there were other issues. I cannot blame them for storming out because they have the right to do that, and then they went to form the Alliance for Democracy (AD.) As they stormed out, they went to the All Nigeria peoples Party (APP), where they saw something worse, and they decided to rather go and from something smaller in the South-West and they were effective in doing so. So, the PDP did not start out in 1998 as a conservative party. The thinking behind the PDP then was: let’s form a big party that will be able to win power in Nigeria and will be able to create a stable democracy that will solve military intervention. That was achieved, but it did not now transform beyond being a vehicle to transit to democracy, and that was the problem. There was a small fraction of it that participated in that big party that had a very dictatorial tendency, and that is what the pan-Yoruba organisation, Afenifere was afraid of. And that fraction eventually triumphed and killed everything progressive in the PDP. If we were to roll back time, I would say that the fears of Afenifere leaders were accomplished eventually because the progressive wing of the PDP was eventually marginalised. Even the people you will call the conservatives, Chief S. B. Awoniyi, Alhaji Adamu Chiroma and Alhaji Bamanga Tukur were completely marginalised. A small group that had a militarist disposition completely destroyed the bigger groups not because they were many: they are so few. In the South-West, you could count how many of them were in that group. They operate like bandits. They just go, put money into the things, and then falsify results, they fight for appointments and make sure that their guys are the ones who are appointed whether they won elections or not. In fact, they destroyed the party. Because of the experience of the Afenifere with this group in the South-West during the Social Democratic Party (SDP), they didn’t want to work with them because this was the same group of people who claimed Alhaji Lateef Jakande lost election in Lagos State. So, they had their own very ugly experience. For the benefit of hindsight, I won’t say they were wrong, but maybe because those of us who are progressives from the North then, who were in the PDP just wanted to move forward. To be honest, we wanted to end military rule and we were probably not paying attention to the warnings of the Afenifere at that time.

2023: Those With Questionable Wealth Should Not Be Elected – Olawepo-Hashim
By Chibuzo Ukaibe 4 days Ago

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former presidential candidate in 2019, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has said that corrupt people with unexplainable wealth should not get elected into government offices at any level come 2023.

Olawepo-Hashim, who added that the fight against corruption must continue beyond 2023 for the country to prosper, said those who have explanation to make to anti-graft agencies and are aspiring for public offices, must be put to task about their integrity question.

In a statement entitled, “2023: The fight against corruption must not stop!”, Olawepo-Hashim said, “a good footstep in winning the battle to reduce corruption if not kill it totally, is to ensure that corrupt people with unexplainable wealth do not get elected at any level. Those who have explanation to make to anti-graft agencies and are aspiring for public offices must be put to task about their integrity question. If we are ever going to birth a new Nigeria. It cannot be with the corrupt as midwives!”

The businessman and global energy executive, assured that the fight against corruption is winnable.

He praised Professor Ishaq Oloyede as head of JAMB for returning billions of Naira to Federal Government’s coffers in an agency that has not returned millions before.

Reflecting on how things were in the past, he said “No one took the products without dropping the correct sums of money, and no one who passed-by took the money and/or the wares away.

“I so much long for a return to the country of simple and honest people that Nigeria was, and that is why it was easy for me to connect with the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) message of General Buhari and Idiagbon in 1983.

“In Ilorin, Kwara State where I schooled, we were the disciples of Idiagbon’s campaign against corruption as President of the Dramatic Society in Cherubim and Seraphim College. I was the lead actor in a drama skit against corruption on NTA Ilorin Youth scene. Also, I busted a pattern of stealing in the College Kiosk perpetrated by students appointed to supervise the kiosk, that is a story for another day, that readers would find in my coming autobiography “Sunrise at Midnight” by the of Grace of God. The first volume will be released soon.”

He explained that incidentally, the fight against corruption was a major plank of the Buhari administration, adding that corruption was one of the major reasons Nigeria is backward and the underbelly of some of the security problems of the country such as banditry.

“Nigeria loses a lot to corruption. According to Price Water Cooper (PWC), a global Consulting outfit, if not arrested by 2030, corruption will be costing Nigeria 37% of her GDP; i.e. 200 billion USD, a whooping N100 trillion (Naira), about 10 times our national budget.

“It will translate to 1,000 USD per capital; five hundred thousand by each Nigerian. The significance of this on our lives, in terms of avoidable death is staggering. Corruption in Nigeria is in various dimension in high places caused by indisciplined life styles, weak regulatory regimes and institutions, eroding ethics and values and a triumphant feeling of impunity that believes there will be no consequence for wrong doing!.

“At the lower levels, corruption is rationalized as a result of poor earnings. “Man go survive”, or as that everybody is doing it, “It is our way” But it is not our way.

“The corruption situation is compounded by an increasingly expanding population of people with ethics and value system that have come to embrace corruption as an acceptable standard and become increasingly audacious that they attack men and women of integrity as “failures”, even though most of the attackers come from the ranks of the poorest, they are choristers of those “nouveau-riche”, who have helped themselves from the public purse.”

“They have a sizable presence online venerating corrupt lifestyle.
The fight against corruption is a serious business, law enforcement will not be enough to win it; regulatory reforms are important but just as well as ethical reform on a mass scale; the role of technology is also central in this fight as we aim to reduce the scope of human manipulation of the system,” he said.

I’M NOT PART OF THE LEGACY OF THE LOOTING THAT PDP LATER BECAME’ SAYS GBENGA OLAWEPO-HASHIM
News & Features by Security Monitor - 25/08/2021 018

My post on the subject matter of corruption on Monday drew a lot of flak from some quarters expectedly.

It was obvious that many did not read the post before commenting: seeing images of people they did not like, they activated their keypads to comment speedily.

Unfortunately, the post was not about President Buhari, who some people love to hate. The post was about the virus, corruption which has grown exponentially through our Nation’s history.

Just to be clear, Nigeria has not always been corrupt and that was what I illustrated in the opening paragraph of the post. We have had leaders like Sir. Ahmadu Bello, the former premier of Northern region who did not leave behind properties for his children; Chief Solomon Lar after been a Federal House of Representatives member in the First Republic, Governor of Old Plateau State (involving Nassarawa, Plateau together), Minister and National chairman of a ruling party had no house in Abuja (anytime his rent was due, I know first-hand what had to be done to sort it out) and Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, the former Central Bank Governor amongst many other portfolios; who did not help themselves with public funds.

I know a former minister of F.C.T Mohammed Abba Gana who even as at now, does not have his own house in Abuja. These were the leaders with whom we confronted military dictatorship together in her dying days.

With them, we formed PDP in 1998, but we all left once it was clear the party had been taken over by other forces. We fought with everything before we left. So, I am not part of the legacy of the looting that PDP later became as some ignorant commentators have alleged.

I resigned from PDP in 2006 and kept fighting in opposition until I had to go into voluntary exile to Europe in 2008, I returned early 2016.

Upon my return, I found out that the previous administration had allowed corruption to flow everywhere, even online. I was bewildered at the level of corruption even amongst beggars. In 2016 I wanted to hand over alms to a cluster of beggars in Lagos who would normally gather by the traffic light in a popular street at Victoria Island. Surprisingly, virtually all the beggars urged me not to give the money to a particular gentleman amongst them. They said he was in the habit of collecting money on behalf of the community of beggars and refusing to share with others.

We cannot continue this way! In the power sector and some manufacturing plants, employers will rather employ Filipino and Pakistani operators rather than Nigerian workers because of pilfering of vital machine parts.

I have heard the bizarre stories of retired civil servants who needed to bribe their serving junior colleagues in order for them to be captured in the roll for their gratuity to be processed.

Tomato sellers are hiding rotten tomatoes underneath the basket while good looking ones are popping up on top. Everyone involved seem to justify their actions by pointing accusing fingers to just anybody to create the impressions that they are helpless when this is not the case.

The Monday post was the beginning of a discuss in the ethical, regulatory, institutional, administrative and systematic reforms we must make to confront the ‘corruption’ pandemic.

This is not about President Buhari but the future of our fatherland.

PoliticsThe Blessings Of Olu Of Warri And The Flicker Of Fire For National Reconciliatio by bilms(op):
*THE BLESSINGS OF OLU OF WARRI AND THE FLICKER OF FIRE FOR NATIONAL RECONCILIATION* .

Gbenga Olawepo Hashim

Last weekend rekindled hope in the hearts of most Nigerians at the coronation of the new Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III. While giving his speech at his coronation, the newly crowned King cancelled the curse placed by one of his ancestors on Nigeria and in place, released forgiveness and blessing on the land.

The Prophet Jeremiah in his prophetic message to the Jews said to them, “Seek the well-being of the city to where I took you to exile. Pray to the Lord for it, since when it does well, so also will you.” (Jeremiah 29:7)

On May 16, 2021, in our post titled “Bless Nigeria even if you feel like a slave in it”, we drew inspiration from the above scripture and I quote “if you do not bless Nigeria it is difficult for you to partake of her goodness”. In that post, I admonished all citizens to bless our beloved Nation Nigeria.

For decades, hatred and hostility against this nation, it’s citizens and neighbouring communities has been passed down fueling ethnic conflicts (indigenes of Modakeke and Ife; Umuleri and Aguleri; Ijaw and Itsekiri; Tiv and Jukun; Egba and Ibadan; Ekiti and Oyo e.t.c) and the diatribe between indigenous ethnic communities against the Fulanis.

Ogiame Atuwatse III’s action sparked and reemphasized on the need and call for National healing and reconciliation.

Admittedly, virtually everyone has one bitter story or another to tell concerning each other and this was practically dramatized in an all night meeting at the house of my late running mate in New Haven, Enugu Dr. Agwuncha Arthur Nwankwo during the 2019 campaign.

Dr. Nwankwo had wanted a number of respected professors from the South East to discuss with my team.

The erudite and respected gentlemen from different states of the South East recollected the horrors of the civil war and injustice against Ndigbo. It was a lengthy meeting and I listened patiently.

After many hours of deliberation, Dr. Abdul Jelil Tafawa Balewa one of the heirs of the Prime Minister of Nigeria who was murdered in a coup led by Chukwuemeka Nzeogwu sprang up to his feet, and said, “gentlemen, what are you saying?”. He began to narrate how Igbo officers killed his father and Sir. Ladoke Akintola, who was his mother’s uncle on same day.

There was quiet in the room for about two minutes. I broke the silence and said “that is why I am here!”

As a nation, we need now to hereby draw a line in the sand on our past woes, reconcile and heal, and start a new journey for greatness. To achieve this, forgiveness is key; restitution where necessary will also need to be done.

What is seen for Nigeria is greatness, and the view for Nigeria which has been proclaimed can be found in Amos 9:14 (“I’ll make everything right again for my people Israel (Nigeria): “They’ll rebuild their ruined cities. They’ll plant vineyards and drink good wine. They’ll work their gardens and eat fresh vegetables. And I’ll plant them, plant them on their own land. They’ll never again be uprooted from the land I’ve given them.”
Amos 9:14 MSG)

The Olu of Warri has acted wisely and may God preserve him on the throne and bless his Kingdom.

It is a new day for Nigeria: the beginning of a new era.

My experience with Nigeria has shown that as good as a program may be, if it is not properly sold or advocated, it will create misgivings.

*Kwara Must Change wades in on N35Billion Bond*

The leading pro-democracy group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change has described the #35billion bond raised by the Kwara State Government as a necessary sacrifice, which Kwarans must bear to ensure rapid development in every sector.

The statement was made by the Convener of the group, AbdulRazaq Hamzat while responding to some issues generated by the bond.

Hamzat observed that all over the world, governments are exploiting unconventional options to bring the much needed infrastructural development to their state. The new order is to invest in social amenities and economic activities to generate revenue and provide the much needed employments for the teeming youths. He said "governments need to leverage on the available options to extract funds that will assist them to re-energize every economic and social sectors". This, he underlined has no harm.

Hamzat went further to allay the fear of the public, which he described as normal especially in a state that has of recent experienced resources mismanagement, and Social disconnect.

"Kwara Must Change have confidence in the ability of the current administration in managing the resources transparently because the government has demonstrated in many ways that it is not only transparent, but equally prudent".

"The recent transparent disbursement of grant support to sme's affected by the #Endsars crisis is a testament to the administration's transparency and this is in addition to other transparent activities, such as bursary disbursement to students, fair teachers recruitment etc, Hamzat said.

While reiterating the commitment of Kwara Must Change to good governance, Hamzat also reminded the people that projects such as KWASU campuses at Osi & Ilesha-Baruba, textile production company, International Cattle Market and other developmental projects that the present administration is planning to embark on (with the accessed bond) are necessary to get the system running sustainably.

He added that there is no where in the world where government information, especially classified ones are available in their raw nature.

However, "government must be encouraged to give specific information that may shape public discourse and understanding to avoid misinformation and unnecessary scepticism"

2023; THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION MUST NOT STOP!
By Gbenga Olawepo Hashim

When I was growing up, it was the practise then, that women laid their wares by the roadside and indicated the price of the product by the numbers of stones they kept on the ground. No one took the products without dropping the correct sums of money, and no one who passed-by took the money and/or the wares away.

I so much long for a return to the country of simple and honest people that Nigeria was, and that is why it was easy for me to connect with the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) message of General Buhari and Idiagbon in 1983.

The first volume will be released soon.

Incidentally, the fight against corruption is a major plank of the Buhari Administration. Corruption is one of the major reason Nigeria is backward and the underbelly of some of the security problems of the country such as banditry.

Nigeria loses a lot to corruption. According to Price Water Cooper (PWC), a global Consulting outfit, if not arrested by 2030, corruption will be costing Nigeria 37% of her GDP; i.e. 200 billion USD, a whooping N100 trillion (Naira), about 10 times our national budget. Corruption in Nigeria is in various dimension in high places caused by indisciplined life styles, weak regulatory regimes and institutions, eroding ethics and values and a triumphant feeling of impunity that believes there will be no consequence for wrong doing!

At the lower levels, corruption is rationalized as a result of poor earnings. “Man go survive”, or as that everybody is doing it, “It is our way” But it is not our way.

The fight against corruption is winnable, before some agents of the corrupt start spreading their fatalistic slogan that no one is a saint. There are some inspiring examples in the system even right now; Professor Oloyede as head of JAMB has been returning billions of Naira to Federal Government coffers in an agency that has not returned millions before.

He is also fighting examination scams that have seen even parents of candidates as culprits. Oloyede is not a pastor or a Bishop.

He is a patriotic Nigerian, standing for good values. As a matter of fact, most religious houses have become more or less centres of corruption, where the teachings of obedience of God’s commandments and fear of God have long disappeared.

A good footstep in winning the battle to reduce corruption if not kill it totally, is to ensure that corrupt people with unexplainable wealth do not get elected at any level. Those who have explanation to make to anti-graft agencies and are aspiring for public offices must be put to task about their integrity question. If we are ever going to birth a new Nigeria. A former presidential candidate, Mr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has raised alarm over what he described as "unwarranted attack" on his person by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's supporters.

The business man, who has been identified as possible 2023 presidential material said that the attack on his person was out of ignorance.

In a publication titled "thisday 2023 shortlist and the unwarranted attack by PYO supporters" on his Facebook page, Olawepo-Hashim educated his followers on his political trajectory, adding that he's not afraid, because he has a clean record.

He reiterated that he has all it takes to lead Nigeria, noting that anytime big changes happen in history, it is usually led by those who have not been too connected with the status quo like himself, so they will not be ex this, ex that.

*THISDAY 2023 SHORTLIST AND THE UNWARRANTED ATTACK BY “PYO SUPPORTERS* -
By Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim

Yesterday we introduced a link to the Thisday review on Seven people considered to fit the description of Ibrahim Babangida (GCFR), of a President Nigeria should consider for 2023 Presidential election.
In that review, Raji Fashola, Bukola Saraki, Ibikunle Amosun, Kayode Fayemi, Yemi Osinbajo and my humble self were considered.

Unfortunately, a group of contributors on my wall who called themselves PYO supporters went on a tirade against my person. Just to be clear, Vice President (VP) Yemi Osinbajo is a man I have great respect for, and I am wondering if he will approve of the gross abuse of privilege which the so called PYO supporters displayed on my wall.

Some of these folks who thought they were marketing VP Yemi Osinbajo said I am not qualified to be President because I am not an Ex-Governor, Ex-Councilor or Ex-Minister. That is not in the Nigerian constitution. As a Professor of Law, VP Yemi Osinbajo knows this. In 2014 when he was nominated as running mate to President Mohammadu Buhari, he had not been elected to any public office before, not even a party office at any level.

I would have ignored those vile attacks but that would not be helpful to other friends on this platform who are mostly young people who need genuine information.
Apart from corruption, one of the greatest problems of our country is lack of proper education and I owe it a duty to use this page to pass on correct information.

Anytime BIG change happens, in history, it is usually led by those who have not been too connected with the status quo; so they will not be Ex-this, Ex-that.
President Abraham Lincoln never won election previously as House of Assembly member or member of House of Representatives before he was elected President of the United States. He went ahead to be the best President of America on record.

Nelson Mandela could not have been Ex-anything under the apartheid government, unlike his rival, Buthelezi, who was serving the apartheid system as Prime Minister of KwaZulu-Natal, not being Ex-this, Ex-that could not have disqualified Mandela as President of South Africa and the best one on record.

I have been in politics as a leader for about three decades, with due respect, earlier than any of the six others considered on that list. I had been presented by a ruling party before as a ministerial nominee, 22 years ago. The man at the helm of affairs was honest enough to say “Gbenga is good, but no one can control him”. I even attended ministerial retreat.

I am clear that many past leaders will only be OK to make me adviser than give me executive position. I am fine with that using my God-given talent to do other things for the benefits of humanity until God says my time has come.

There are one or two people who were councilors when I was a national officer of the ruling party then, who are now two-term Governors. I do not begrudge them. And for the record, I produced majority of Councilors, Chairman of council and State Assembly member in my constituency then in Kwara State, even when the “Big Politician” of the State was in the opposite party.

I have younger ones who had worked with me as staff before who have become ministers in Nigeria more than 10 years ago and I do not envy them.
Hakainde Hichilema has just been elected Zambian President, he was not former Governor or former minister. He is a Cattle Rancher.

Now, on the vexed issue of zoning, my position is so clear that the next President of Nigeria should be a true Nigeria President. Not a Yoruba, Hausa, Ibo, Tiv or Kanuri President. He or She should be someone who can unite Nigeria, secure the country, and bring economic prosperity.

At the right time when our party, the APC says it’s time to choose a Presidential flagbearer, we shall consider that question.
I am not afraid that the right thing will be done because the leader of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari, unlike many other past leaders, is not afraid of a man who has a clean record.

GBENGA OLAWEPO-HASHIM AND THE SIX WISE MEN
By Oluwasegun Abifarin

As part of General Ibrahim Babangida's 80th birthday celebration, Arise Television conducted an interview with the one-time military president of Nigeria, who among other things spoke about the type of president that Nigeria needs to fix the current National challenges, who must be within a certain age bracket.

Arise's sister platform, Thisday Newspaper, went to town yesterday to examine Seven Nigerians who fit IBB's description including Gbenga Olwepo-Hashim. Here is a synopsis. This will be followed our own SWOT analysis start from tomorrow.

GBENGA OLAWEPO-HASHIM
“Age-wise, exposure-wise and knowledge-wise, human rights activist and businessman,Gbenga Toyosi Olawepo fits the IBB template. He is clearly a self-made, emerging political leader. He was born on 28 June 1965.

He entered partisan politics in 1995, when he became National Publicity secretary of the National Democratic Labour Party (NDLP) in the transition programme announced by the Abacha regime.

Eventually his party and that of some politicians like Solomon Lar, Alhaji Rimi’s SPP, Ciroma and Bamanga Tukur’s ANC were denied registration.

Rather than find accommodation in the military founded parties, Olawepo found association with principled politicians, who opposed the late Nigerian military dictator Sani Abacha.

This group of politicians first organised around the Institute for Civil Society and G-34 and later pioneered the formation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He has traversed Nigeria and has solid contacts. Gbenga, who contested the presidency in 2019 against Buhari is an inner-driven person with the boldness to follow his convictions and provide leadership.

Not a governor or minister, Olawepo brings a different mettle to the table ahead of 2023.”
OTHERS

YEMI OSINBAJO:
In theory, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo should have had his position as Buhari’s successor dusted and clean. His eligibility is not in doubt. He is Christian and from the South-west. Age-wise, knowledge-wise, economy/politics savvy with a calm, cool competence, he fits the IBB template.

ROTIMI AMAECHI:
Being the Rivers State House of Assembly Speaker for eight years, governor for two terms and currently minister for almost eight years put Hon. Rotimi Amaechi in a very strong position ahead 2023 calculations.

BUKOLA SARAKI:
Former two-term governor of Kwara State (2003 to 2011) and ex-Senate President, Dr. Bukola Abubakar Saraki, born December 19, 1962, is a sound, well-grounded politician with the sagacity to match. As Senate President, he demonstrated considerable control, charisma and mettle.

KAYODE FAYEMI:
Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, born in February 1965, with his current stint would have done two terms as a state chief executive by 2023. He has also been Minister of Solid Minerals Development in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, from November 11, 2015 to May 30, 2018.

IBIKUNLE AMOSUN:
Former governor of Ogun State Ibikunle Amosun (born in January 1958) and two-term senator is a hugely exposed personality and indisputably has nurtured strategic contacts across board.

BABATUNDE FASHOLA:
The focussed, brilliant and workaholic ex-two term governor of Lagos State (from May 29, 2007 to May 29, 2015) and currently the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, was born June 28, 1963. Though a top-notch lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), he is also grounded in the economy and key issues of statehood.
