2016 DSLR Buying Guide for Concert Photography by photographers in Nigeria

Before breaking down my choices for best DSLR cameras for concert and event photography, I want to first mention that my eventual decisions were based on a few very important factors including (but not limited to) affordability, available lens options, and technical considerations such as light gathering ability (ISO), and frames per second.

Although there are numerous camera manufacturers that make DSLR’s capable of delivering high quality images, I have essentially focused the following list on Nikon and Cannon (Sony also makes an appearance). Why? Simply put, Nikon and Canon are the industry standards. The “big two” have more high quality lenses and accessory options than all other brands combined. Period.

The Nikon D4 was originally announced back in 2012, with the D4s following a year and a half later in 2014. Both cameras are STELLAR performers, with the D4s having a slight bump in ISO performance, shooting speed, and improved autofocus. If you’ve got an extra $5,000 (D4)-$6500 (D4s) dollars laying around, you’ll have the best money can buy.

Although Canon’s 1DX is likely up for a refresh in 2015, it is still more camera than you’ll ever need. With the ability to shoot at 14FPS with astounding high ISO performance, the Canon 1DX offers the perfect balance of ergonomics and performance.

The Canon 5D Mark III remains at the top of the heap for the Professional/Semi-Professional Category going into 2015. There are rumors of a new 5D Mark IV that may be arriving in 2015, but until it does, this is your camera. With INCREDIBLE performance at high ISO’s, modest FPS count (5.5 FPS), and a perfect balance of resolution and video capabilities, the 5D Mark III may be the best overall DSLR right now for multi-use photography. Don’t let the DXO scores fool you. For concerts and events, the Canon 5D Mark III is one of the best in the business.

One of the common misunderstandings in photography has to do with the focal length of a lens, or its optical distortion properties. Many photographers claim that a wider angle lens will distort facial features either because of the lens distortion, or the focal length of the lens being too short. In this article and the accompanying video (which is extracted from our upcoming Photography Life Basics Video), we will prove that focal length has nothing to do with distorting a subject’s face and the additional information on lens distortion will explain in detail exactly what gets impacted by lens distortion.

Some couples are very serious about the tradition of the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding day. I like to sit couples down and explain that I really NEED at least an hour just with the couple (nobody else in the wedding party) in order to get a decent album together. Once they realize that they need to commit to this much time and see they can’t fit it in the wedding day plans, they are usually open to doing a shoot the day before the wedding all dressed up. It gives the bride a chance to try her hair and makeup out, and you’ll have unlimited time with the couple to nail the wedding photos.

The Nikon D810 has an ultra-high resolution full frame sensor and a surprisingly affordable price tag for a professional camera. In fact, many well-heeled enthusiasts have scraped up the cash to buy it too. It has no anti-aliasing filter in front of the sensor which produces even sharper fine detail. The D810 is a classic DSLR which shows the view through the lens via a mirror (which flips up at the moment of exposure) and an optical viewfinder, and it's at the centre of a huge range of lenses and other accessories for both amateurs and pros.

It's the first enthusiast DSLR to shoot continuously at 10 frames per second, matching the speed of professional DSLRs like the Canon-1D X and Nikon D4s but at a much lower cost.
