So if we measure the 8 lane TMB from Apapa Express through Gbagada to Ikoyi and then measure it again from old toll gate on Lagos - Ibadan Expressway (abi we should start from Ibadan toll gate sef?) how many kms we go get? Na dis kin 'I clever pass my neighbour' sense dey always cause trouble for this country. Which bridge no get approach? If we start measuring bridges inclusive of their approaches where do we stop? The miserable JB/Yoruba/MB owned bridge is just 1.8km which is barely double the 800m length of BRF's Ikoyi bridge and just a fraction of TMB's 11kms over water and that is an end to the story. If you like you can try entering it for a Guinness record as the longest bridge in the SE if that floats your boat. Shuo!

asha 80: still no difference with what i wrote except that instead of writing 'whole stretch of bridge' i should have written the road component from asaba approaching and stretching to both enugu onitsha and owerri onitsha expressway.

Abi you count Oworonshoki express all the way to Apapa and the other end to Ikoyi as part of TMB? Why o why do you guys sell yourselves so cheaply and laud very petty things inventing 'records' out of thing air? What is so difficult to understand about the following statement?

The construction giant mobilised equipment to the site in July for preliminary work pending the finalisation of the contract for the bridge and its approach road estimated at 12.4 kilometres, with the bridge alone having a length of 1.8 kilometres.

asha 80: do you realize that the whole stretch of the bridge will connect to both the enugu onitsha and onitsha owerri expressways?

From JB's last annual report:

Ibile Holdings Ltd. 65,997,000 5.5 % 65,997,000 5.5 %
Benue Investment and Property Company Ltd.62,561,358 5.2 %

Can you see clearly now? Ibile Holdings is the investment unit of LASG with offices behind Western House (an Oodua property btw).

The toll should be at least N50k for 'luxury' buses which works out at only N1k per passenger. Ori ese were.....

If FGN has only 30% of the investment in the bridge leaving 70% to JB and its unknown 'private investors' how is the title wrong? Or isn't the majority owner also commonly described as the owner? I just hope it won't turn out that the 'private investor' is Tinubu grin

PoliticsRe: JB To Own 2nd Niger Bridge (picture) by biodunid(op): 11:23am On Dec 27, 2013
And this is all the SE has to show for voting 99% for GEJ? A bridge owned by JB which is itself significantly owned by LASG (Yorubas)? At 1.8km this bridge is a fraction of the 11km TMB which my inlaws like to compare it with and at just two lanes per side, from what the rendering shows, it is only half as wide. At N100b it will cost less than the rebuilding of Lagos – Ibadan, half the cost of Abuja – Kano and less than a quarter the final cost of East – West roads which are all funded 100% by the FGN which can’t afford to pay more than 30% for the SNB. Abi some powerful daughters of the land are the ‘private investors’ mentioned in the story? When Tinubu was found to have some connection with the company constructing Lekki rd the whole world reverberated with the news and lawsuits flew all over the place but no one is bothering to ask the obvious questions in this case. Is this what Republicanism means?

FG Reviews Cost of Second Niger Bridge

The federal government has begun negotiations with contractors handling the construction of the second Niger Bridge at Onitsha, Anambra State, with a view to securing a reduction in the cost of the project.
Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, said the negotiations for a reduction in the cost of the bridge were necessitated by the fact that the exact figures for building the bridge, whose groundbreaking would be done soon, were now known.
He spoke in Abuja at the inauguration of the skywalk bridge connecting Blocks A and B of the ministry, and named Oziegbe, after him.
According to the initial contract terms, the contractor, Julius Berger along with its partner in the consortium, are to invest N100 billion while the federal government will bring 30 percent in equity that will come from money made available by the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
The construction giant mobilised equipment to the site in July for preliminary work pending the finalisation of the contract for the bridge and its approach road estimated at 12.4 kilometres, with the bridge alone having a length of 1.8 kilometres.

“The second Niger Bridge has now been fully designed,” Onolememen told reporters in Abuja. “Now that the numbers are known, we are negotiating it downwards on the basis of our own objectives and financial plans, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Finance. We will soon do the groundbreaking.”
He added that the federal government was seeking to raise $2 billion from the private sector in the next two years to enable it undertake the funding of road construction projects nationwide since it could not provide the needed funds.

BusinessWitness Alleges Bishop Obembe Attempted To Defraud Partners Of N1. 4 Billion by biodunid(op): 7:51am On Dec 27, 2013
Witness alleges Bishop Obembe attempted to defraud partners of N1. 4 billion

A WITNESS, Pastor Julius Sajuyigbe yesterday testified to Justice Lateefa Okunnu of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja that the presiding bishop of El-Shaddai Bible Church, Dolphin Estate, Bishop Joseph Olanrewaju Obembe attempted to allegedly defraud other partners in a $9 million business deal.

While led in evidence by counsel to the defendant, Mr. Nojim Tairu, Pastor Sajuyigbe stressed that the discovery of the attempted fraud led to the break-up of the relationship in a seven-count charge of bordering on forgery and uttering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Dr. Oluremi Oladipo Folorunsho.

Folorunso, an accountant and a businessman pleaded not guilty to the charges of forgery and uttering the letter head papers of El-Shaddai Petroleum Limited (a company chaired by Bishop Obembe), by changing both its office address and the character of the letter head papers. He was also alleged to have forged the signature of a former business associate, Ms. Helyn Aninye.

Sajuyigbe in his testimony said, the journey stated in late 2006 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between himself, Bishop Obembe, Pastor Benedict Olagunju for the purpose of prospecting for oil bloc, adding that he was the one that engineered the coming together of all the partners.

He continued that since only oil company could approach Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) for the purpose of oil prospecting, the partners had to settle for El-Shaddai Petroleum Limited, as the time was short to embark on the registration of new company.

He further told the court that the membership of the group was later increased to five with the admission of Mrs. Aninye and that meetings were held at Dolphin Estate home of Dr. Obembe as well as Aret Adams House office of Dr. Folorunsho simultaneously.

He said he was the one that introduced everyone in the team and that the team decided to make Bishop Obembe the chairman, as he appeared to be their senior spiritually.

He also confirmed that Power of Attorney was issued to Dr. Folorunsho by the partners being the only businessman amongst them.

According to him, “the bidding was coming up in early 2007, so, Bishop Obembe volunteered his El-Shaddai Petroleum Company because we have to bid with a registered oil company. We agreed that Bishop Obembe retain the chairmanship of the company. Dr. Folorunsho was to serve as the Chief Executive Officer while Helyn Aninye who later joined us was to serve as company secretary and legal adviser. I served as finance director while Pastor Olagunju was not given any special function but he was to serve as liaison for us abroad because he is based outside d country.”

He further told the court that Bishop Obembe tried to hoodwink other partners when he told them that $1 million was to be paid to them by IGI as signature bonus.

“We were told that out of the money, we will also pay tithe to his church. But we later discovered that the actual money was $10 million and not $1 million as he told us.”

Earlier, Dr. Folorunsho in his testimony told the court that following the pulling out of H-Oil, IGI was later introduced by Bishop Obembe to the business partners. Asked why Form C07 (which would have changed the ownership structure of the company) was not filed before Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) despite having been signed,

Dr. Folorunsho told the court that the business partners decided against filing it because the issue of integrity had crept into the business relationship amongst the partners.

He noted that what later led to the break-up of the relationship was the discovery by Mrs. Aninye of an attempt to defraud the other partners by Bishop Obembe through the signature bonus to be paid by IGI.

While giving the figure as $10 million, he said the bishop only disclosed $1 million to the partners. This he said led to the break-up of the relationship.

He said when Bishop Obembe was confronted with the allegation; he simply said ‘it was a mistake of the mind and not of the body’.

Also giving her evidence earlier, Dr. Folorunsho’s office secretary, Olawuyi Bunmi, told the court that she actually signed the contentious letterhead on behalf of Mrs. Aninye on instruction from her principal. She denied allegation of attempting to stimulate the signature of Mrs. Aninye who had earlier given evidence in the suit. She said aside signing her regular signature; she also added ‘for’ before her signature indicating that she was signing on behalf of someone else.

Justice Okunnu therefore, adjourned further hearing of final written address till January 29, 2014.

Christianity EtcEx-anglican Primate Akinola Rescued From Kidnappers by biodunid(op): 11:37am On Dec 25, 2013
Ex-Anglican Primate Akinola rescued from kidnappers

Unknown gunmen yesterday kidnapped the immediate past Primate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Peter Jasper Akinola.

Primate Akinola and his driver were snatched away by the gunmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital at about 3pm.

The Primate and his driver were last night rescued from the kidnappers along Joga-Iboro Road near the border with Benin Republic, the police said.

In what would have been one of the biggest cases of abduction, the 69-year-old former fiery cleric was overpowered by the gun-totting men at the entrance of the Peter Akionola Foundation Centre for youth Industrial Training at Kilometre 10 near Obada-Oko along the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.

The former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) hails from Abeokuta. He was at the centre – which he founded to take care of the underprivileged – to inspect some projects within the office when the gunmen stormed the place.

The gunmen reportedly stopped the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) inside which he was and ordered him and his driver out, pointing guns at them.

They reportedly shot sporadically into the air before escaping with the cleric, his driver and his car.

The abductors had not established any contact with the family as at last night.

The police cautioned against referring to the incident as kidnapping. But they confirmed that the Archbishop, who will turn 70 next month, was taken away by armed one.

The CAN last night condemned the abduction of the primate.

CAN President Ayo Oritsejafor, Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kenny Ashaka said:

“It is totally unacceptable to us that Primate Jasper Akinola is kidnapped. This is a retired man of God and we wonder what kind of money the kidnappers want to get from a retired man of God. We believe that this kidnapping is for ransom.

“We plead with the kidnappers to release him unconditionally and use the occasion of Christmas celebration to reflect on Christ’s eternal message of love, passion and humility. They should release him immediately.

“Instead of kidnapping men of God, the kidnappers should pray for leaders, whether religious or political.

“We are also calling on security agencies to quickly swing into action and help to track down these kidnappers. They should also ensure that Primate Akinola is not harmed while rescuing him.”

Last Sunday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta during the Ogun State Carol Service of Nine Lessons, Rev. Akinola read the third lesson in Yoruba.

Association Chairman Gbenga Gbesan told reporters that Rev. Akinola needed not be subjected to such experience because, he always fought for the poor.

Gbesan said: “We appeal for the immediate release of the revered Primate without any condition attached to it whatsoever.

“And it was for this reason that he set up the Youth Industrial Training Centre to train unemployed youth to acquire skills to enable them lived a meaningful life.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi told reporters in a telephone interview that it was early in the day to describe the incident as kidnapping, adding that security agencies had been placed on the alert.

Adejobi said: “The fact that gunmen went away with the Bishop, his driver and his vehicle does not connote kidnap.

“Our men at the border have been placed on the red alert, he said promising that Rev. Akinola would be recovered alive.”

When the ibo man surpervisor saw what was going on he comanded the yoruba guy not to obey.the indian man got angry and slapped the yoruba guy. With the fellow skipped and our police being what they are the best thing would be to file charges against the company. The crime of the Lebanese oga is by extension the crime of the company. Falana would be great with such a suit but when are the young lawyers in the house going to start earning their stripes? They could claim lack of resources (obviously a woman willing to take slaps and kicks for N17k per month isn't able to pay anything) and that is where the house could come in.

Is it time we created Voltron Chambers on nairaland to replace Gani who is gone and Falana who won't be active forever? These two crusaders began from somewhere and Gani died a naira billionaire so hope all the lawyers in the house who claim law isn't profitable in naija are taking note. Imagine one of them taking up this matter and nairalanders showing up in court when the case comes up for mention? It could be the start of something major. Just some quick thoughts.

PS:

We also have the office of the Public Defender in Lagos which handles such matters even more expeditiously than some private lawyers.

henrimoto: concerned nairalanders !!! can we really do the above ? if you are really concerned about the ill treatments being given to nigerians on nigerian soil, by these lebanese, chinese and indian employers. let us not just talk alone. let's act ! no effort is too small. how do we get the punch reporter's contact... ? @boidunid... oga mi, thanks for your concern. is there anyway we can act on this ?

Woman loses pregnancy after alleged kick from boss

A 34-year-old woman, Mrs. Alexandra Ossai, has accused her Lebanese boss, Kaveh Noine, of causing her to lose her seven-month-pregnancy after he kicked her in the stomach.

Ossai, who until December 13, 2013, was a supervisor with a Lebanese owned firm, Toppan Printing Company, alleged that Noine assaulted her many times during her eight months stay at the company.

Currently at a private hospital in the Fagba area of Lagos State, Ossai told PUNCH Metro that she had undergone emergency surgery four days after the kick to save her life as her placenta was said to have been damaged.

She said, “I started working at Toppan in April. I earn N17,000 salary and work from Monday to Saturday. Anytime Noine was annoyed, he would beat the person he was angry with. Sometimes, he would throw whatever he can lay his hands on at the person. Prior to that incident, Noine had slapped me many times.

“Noine had said he would hold me responsible for the shortcomings of the people I supervised. As a result, I often assisted my subordinates in their duties to make sure that Noine had nothing to complain about.”

Ossai said on December 12 2013, Noine had flown into a rage when he noticed something on the floor in her section.

“It was a container for a drug. That is what we do; we produce packets for drugs and perfumes. So when Noine saw one of such packets on the floor, he was so angry that he gave me a blow to the chest,” she recalled.

She said Noine subsequently went into his office and typed a termination letter for Ossai, which she refused to sign. Her refusal allegedly enraged him further and after verbally abusing her, he was said to have told her that it was her last warning.

The following day, Ossai ran into Noine while coming from his secretary’s office. Noine allegedly dragged Ossai back to the office and called her a wicked woman.

Ossai said, “He said I looked like a mad person. After abusing me, he hit me on my neck twice. Then, without warning, he kicked my stomach with his knee. Some co-workers were there but they did not intervene. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach.”

The mother of one, whose younger brother and sister also worked in the same company, said she prevailed on her siblings not to attack Noine when they heard the news.

“I never for once told my husband what I was going through at work. I didn’t want him to come and fight Noine. I pleaded with my siblings not to fight,” Ossai said.

Although the pains eventually subsided after two days, it was learnt that in the early hours of Monday, Decemebr 16, 2013, Ossai began to bleed. She was rushed to a private clinic at Fagba. She was told that her placenta had been damaged as a result of the kick and that she had to undergo emergency surgery to save her life.

She said, “I didn’t know that my baby had died until two days after the surgery. I was told my baby lost his face too due to the kick.”

She said a report was made at the Area F police command the following day by her aunt, Mrs. Olabisi Jaiyeoba.

Jaiyeoba said, “When Ossai’s husband and I were refused entry into the company, we went to report to the police. They accompanied us there and even had to force their way in. The administrative manager lied that Noine had travelled out of the country. But as of that Tuesday, he was still in the country. It was later that we learned that he travelled last Friday.”

Efforts to get a response from the Deputy Manager of Toppan printing Company, Mr. Abass Al-Souki, proved abortive as his phone number indicated that it was unreachable.

However, the admin manager, who declined to identify herself, told PUNCH Metro that the factory was closed for the Christmas holidays.

She said, “We closed for the holidays last Friday and would reopen on January 8 2013. I would not like to speak on that matter because it is already with the police. Also our company lawyer is on it. You can only get across to our management in January 2014.”

Legal counsel for Toppan, Mrs. Nnebe, said that she could not comment on the matter.

She said, “It would be best if you wait for the police to conclude their investigation. Ossai has only made an allegation. Let the police finish their investigation and then we would give our response.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, said, “The incident which occurred on Thursday was not reported to the police until Tuesday. It took about five days before it was reported. So when the police arrived at the suspect’s workplace, they were informed that he had travelled. It took a long time for the complainant to report the matter. But we are investigating.”

Man Sells Own Baby to Fund Father's Funeral

Emmanuel Ugwu

The police in Abia State have arrested a 26-year-old man for selling his baby boy for N260, 000 in order to foot the burial expenses of his father.

Kinsley Ubani from Umunkpeyi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area was arrested for selling the baby, born to him by his live-in lover, Chioma Onu.
He was among scores of child traffickers paraded yesterday by the police in Umuahia.

Another suspected child trafficker, Chimere Sunday alias Boyoyo from Umuojima Ogbu in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, was also arrested and paraded for allegedly selling his two children in collaboration with two female suspects, Mrs. Uloaku Chinweuba and Mrs. Ugochi Alozie.

Aside from the child traffickers, 19 pregnant teenagers rescued from a baby factory at Umuobia Olokoro were also paraded.

The girls, in various stages of pregnancy, whose ages range from 15 to 23 years, were rescued from Nma Charity Home where they were being kept and fed until they deliver their babies for sale to prospective buyers.

In a swift reaction, the state task force on environment and allied matters demolished the baby factory at Olokoro, making it the second time such a facility would be demolished in less than two weeks.

Ezuma Hospital in Aba was similarly demolished on December 7 for being used as a baby factory.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Usman Tilli Abubakar, who addressed journalists on the activities of the police in checking crime over the past five months, said Ubani was arrested based on a tip-off from some neighbours.

He also said the proprietress of the charity home, Mrs. Nma Achumba, was originally running her charity home at Umunkpeyi, which she converted to a baby factory and four months ago, she was said to have relocated to Olokoro where she had been operating secretly before a raid on her facility on December 12.

Abubakar said when the police raided the illegal charity home at about 5a.m., following a tip-off, the proprietress had escaped but her son, Uche Ohuabunwa and his wife Tina, who were in charge of taking care of the pregnant girls, were arrested.

Speaking with journalists, Ubani admitted selling his baby boy, who was about four years old, for N260, 000, adding that he was compelled to do so last November in order to raise funds to bury his father.

He added that the body of his father had been lying in the mortuary for 18 months and his siblings were not showing interest in the burial plans hence he resorted to selling his baby to raise money for the burial ceremony.

A decade of farming 20 hectares (oil palm) and am yet to see a brass farthing. Thank God for the monthly salary that even allowed me to indulge in such an outlay without return for so long. What I learned is that is that farming, like all other businesses, needs extremely close marking and hands on operation. Also with limited land typically available in naija you need either livestock or high value crops to make it work. I don't see 1 hectare replacing N50k per month unless you go into livestock and that will itself require millions.

I was unwittingly exposed to the risk of being caught by the security fellow for leaving the store with unreceipted goods. You think the cashier would have owned up if I said she took money without receipt? The store needs to put up bold signs on collecting receipts for all purchases to save others like me from such a hazard. In the heat of the moment the average person doesn't think through the legal implication of the transaction.

Actually its a global problem (remember that is what Ibori and his wife got up to when he was a cashier in the UK?). Naija's case is just worse because of the impunity and flagrant nature.

funkybaby: You seriously need to shut it.

People doing similar jobs (and worse) in malls in Europe get paid minimum wage (which is peanuts) while their bosses earn hundreds of thousands and declare huge profits every year. Yet, you do not find such people stealing from their bosses or expecting tips from customers.

You need to change your entire orientation and outlook to life/career.

If your type gets a bank job, there's a 99percent chance that you will carry out a bank fraud if you have the slightest opportunity.

ACFE (IIA too btw) will tell you Skimming can't be tackled by taking stock. that is obviously medicine after death. With dozens of Cashiers who do you hold for stock shrinkage?

hollandis: many things you feel are not worth it in Nigeria are actually worth a lot .There is nothing immoral in giving tips .If you don't give tips over here ,next time you are waiting to be served ,you will be given a bad service .If you feel that you wanna report it to management ,,they have a union ..so next time funky give a tip or not.
Of course they shouldnt steal from employers but employers should also perform inventory on their goods and not depend on cashiers

That definitely doesn't apply to me. When I don't pay cash I bring out N500 / N1000 from my pocket and hand it over. Sometimes I don't get thanked or even acknowledged but one does it for God and in recognition of the fact that these are low wage jobs. However not every store allows tipping even in the Ikeja Mall.

arcbabe: some will have little change remaining and they will be waiting to collect it. cheesy

My practice even when I pay with cards is to tip but we hadn't even concluded the transaction so that bridge hadn't been crossed. These were simply two criminally minded cashiers that I met on two occasions in Shoprite. Makes me wonder how pervasive the scam is there and how much Shrinkage their stock is suffering.

arcbabe: Don't mind the OP na over sabi dey worry am,cashiers coperate a lot with each other and even if he report her they will cover her up. Am sure he bought all those items without giving her tips and now she collected it by not scanning some goods and he is complaining.

That is the cost of a half kg of almonds in Nigeria. I know it is a lot cheaper than this in the US but welcome to naija. Abi make I no chop healthy nuts just because of cost? I bet you don't complain if your date spends more than that on wine etc so why the alarm over my provisioning my larder appropriately so I can stay home and eat healthy?

hollandis: what is Almond that it should cost 2500 ? 20 dollars .Isn't that scam itself .Why would you pay for an inflated price .Is it not almond .BTW what do you mean almond ..is it the nuts or what .You mean you bought a 20 dollars worth bag of almond ..Is that not sickening? sad

The Association of Certified fraud Examiners (ACFE) which I belong to defines this particular scam as Skimming. Do you have a different PROFESSIONAL opinion?

hollandis: When she said it couldn't be scanned ,why didn't you corrobate that info with other cashiers. Why didn't you ask questions. Are you a kid? Are you easily swayed? huh
Most of the things we feel are problems in Nigeria are actually because we fail to speak out. What if the cashiers story is true?Did you go and find out from the store manager? And how is that related to scamming huh Do you even know the definition of scam?

We all I believe have had occasions when Cashiers genuinely couldn't scan an item and had to call a supervisor in to manually type in a code or whatever. This scam was a variation on the legit practice which partly explains why I was caught unawares the first time. It wasn't until she took the cash without receipt and I was moving on that it struck me something critical was different.
hollandis: I thought you are educated enough ,why would you go to a mall and buy a service and not get a receipt?
