Nairaland / General / Three Nigerian Online Scammers Get Heavy Prison Sentence In The U.S by bizzyjosh: 1:59pm On May 26, 2017
A US federal district court in Mississippi has sentenced three Nigerian scammers to a collective 235 years in prison for their roles in a large-scale international fraud network that duped people out of tens of millions of dollars.
The three Nigerian nationals were part of a 21-member gang of cyber criminals, of which six, including Ayelotan, Raheem, and Mewase, were extradited from South Africa to the Southern District of Mississippi in July 2015 to face charges in the case.

Oladimeji Seun Ayelotan, 30, faces up to 95 years in prison
Rasaq Aderoju Raheem, 31, faces up to 115 years in prison
Femi Alexander Mewase, 45, faces up to 25 years in prison

A federal jury found all of them guilty of offenses involving mail fraud, wire fraud, credit card fraud, identity theft, and theft of government property, the US Department of Justice announced Thursday.
Also, Ayelotan and Raheem were found guilty of conspiracies to commit bank fraud and money laundering, which is why they have been given longer prison sentences.Until now, the justice department has charged a total of 21 suspects in this case: 12 defendants have already pleaded guilty to charges related to the conspiracy while 11 have been sentenced to date.
The gang has been operating since 2001 and ran a variety of online scams, including romance scams, where the criminals used the false identity of love-struck girlfriends on a dating site to establish a romantic relationship with unsuspecting victims.
Once the gang members gained the victim's trust and affection, they would convince them to carry out their money laundering schemes and launder money from other rackets via MoneyGrams and Western Union, or resend electronics and other goods bought with stolen credit cards to countries where they could be sold for a profit.
The gang members were arrested by South African police in a joint operation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in December 2015.

Sports / Why This May Be Wenger's Last Season by bizzyjosh: 1:42pm On Mar 16, 2017
At this time a year ago, Arsenal were second on the premier league table and were with belief that it could be their season after 12 years without a premier league title. Fast forward a year later and things couldn’t be any worse for the club and its manager. Arsenal currently lie 5th on the premier league table and have just been humiliated out of the champions league with a 10-2 aggregate defeat to German champions Bayern Munich, their star man Sanchez is reportedly unhappy and is touted as wanting to move away and has had a falling out with manager Arsene wenger. There have been times like this in the past where things have been grim at the North London club but this time it seems it could be a sign of things to come if they don’t act fast and sacrifice their long standing manager and inject a new level of ambition and desire to the emirates once again.
Over the last few weeks, fans have called for the axe on arsene. This shouldn’t be news though because it is not the first time in recent years that fans have protested against the manager who has always had the backing and support of the arsenal board. It feels that this time there is actually a need for fresh ideas in the Arsenal changing room, the protests this time around has led to an increased awareness and recent results have also led to more scrutiny of Arsene’s position. Last week, there were rumours in the papers that Arsenal had struck a deal with Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri to take over at the emirates this summer but both parties denied this claims. Reports like this might have no truth in them but they do not deny the fact that arsene’s time is up and there are great candidates out there to replace him.
Arsenal is a club that has a rich tradition and should be gunning yearly for the title and be a strong contender for the champions league, Arsenal’s board should do the fans and players a favour and let wenger have a rest, he has been a great servant of the club, he has always been a great manger and a good influence to the boys on the training ground as well but if we are to move forward then we must depart from our old ways and usher in the new day of youth and adventure that has characterized the play and look of the club in recent years.

One of the longest reigns ever known in the history of African football has ended today as issa hayatou has been voted out as Caf president. Issa Hayatou was running against Madagascar’s Ahmad Ahmad in today’s election in a bid for an eight term in power. Issa hayatou has been in power for the last two decades in a tenure which has witnessed various highs and lows in African football, his tenure will be remembered for the increased strides taken in moving African football to new and global heights but his tenure will also be marred by various allegations of corruption within the caucus of Caf.

Nairaland / General / Why Jungle Justice Still Exists In Nigeria by bizzyjosh: 4:46pm On Mar 07, 2017
Jungle justice can be said to be when humans take the execution of the law into their hands and carry out judgment on any individual for breaking the law. This form of justice is quite prevalent in third world countries especially African countries and Nigeria isn’t an exemption. In a society as diverse and multicultural as Nigeria, it is quite surprising that jungle justice is common and transcends our various cultural heritages and beliefs. Taking an observatory look at our society, I believe a reason for this can be faulted to the following reasons.

In a society where the values of hard work, honesty and perseverance are extolled. Any act that does not represent this virtues is seen as an affront to the integrity of the people and society at large. This virtues have subtly been implanted in us right from childhood from our parents, teachers and spiritual leaders. We’ve also heard tales of various criminals who’ve met violent ends as a deterrent to any such ideas in our minds and avoid such a fate. So taking a look at our beliefs and the power of our beliefs can never be overemphasized; Suicide bombers can strap bombs on themselves and end lives based on their beliefs, this shows that when it comes to the protection of beliefs any form of drastic action is not irrational.

Secondly, the lack of faith in law enforcement agencies charged with upholding the law. It is widely believed that law enforcement in Nigeria are inadequate in dealing with the threat of crime and its perpetrators. Their inability to act has led to large scale insecurity and has led to gaps which is readily exploited by criminals. In such a situation, the average citizen turns to his own defense and when he manages to apprehend a criminal, what is to stop him from executing the law when he has being doing the job of law enforcement. At such a time, being judge and executioner is the most befitting idea, he therefore exacts punishment as he deems fit. It’s been widely touted that our nation is “lawless’ due to the fact that sometimes works with and aid criminals in their activities and eventually their escape. Confidence in law enforcement (especially the police) is at an all time low, it will take more than good PR and some arrests to make the average citizen feel more secured and not take matters into his own hand.

Thirdly, the current economic situation in the country. There’s no denying that we are in one of the worst recessions this country has seen since independence. Food prices are skyrocketing, inflation is almost at 19% and the standard of living for most Nigerians has dropped below humane levels. At times like this; what you’ve worked hard to attain is worth more than a possession, it is a testament to your resilience and persistence to survive in such harsh conditions. When a criminal tries to take away from you, it’s no longer crime, it’s injustice and it must be rectified by justice even if it’s of the jungle variety. In a country where the death penalty is sub-consciously associated with every crime, at such a time there will be no mercy for your assailant and a pound of flesh is the only recourse for us.

Jungle justice is not a form of justice I condone but it is one that I understand. As a child, I witnessed jungle justice meted out to an uncle for stealing a pair of shoes, he was lucky not to lose his life but I never lost the lesson which is ‘Crime doesn’t pay”. Jungle justice is a part of our society and will not change anytime soon, what should be understood that crime doesn’t pay and once that is understood we will see less lynching and society will be better off as a whole.
