A bomb has exploded at the busy Monday Market
in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the bomb
went off during a busy morning at vicinity of the
market. The number of casualties could not be
immediately verified as security agencies arrive the
scene to secure the market.
A Borno government state government official
confirmed the blast saying the causality number is
very high but stated that security agencies are
working to secure the area and rescue victims.
Today's bombing would be the first major bombing
by Islamist sect Boko Haram since the beginning of
the Ramadan

Unknown gunmen carrying out killings in Southern
Kaduna since last week have struck again in the
late hours and early hours of Saturday killing 33
persons in a remote village called ‘Ambie'. The
gunmen also killed 10 persons in Paa village
nearby.
The latest killing brings to approximately 200, the
number of persons killed since Monday in Sanga
local government area of the state.
It was also gathered that there is serious
humanitarian crisis in the area as over 30, 000
people are taking refuge in public schools and
police stations, while thousands have fled to
Nasarawa and Plateau states.
The military authorities confirmed the latest attack
but said it has no full details of casualties.
The military said about 10 villages have been
sacked by the armed bandits, while troops have
been deployed to the area from Abuja, Nasarawa
and nearby Plateau states to complement the
mobile policemen units already stationed in the
area.
As at the time of this report, the Kaduna state
government or the National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA) are yet to assist
displaced persons.

The National Executive Council of the Academic
Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, has resolved to
continue its nine months old strike pending the
outcome its meeting with the Senate Committee on
Education on July 1.
Chibuzor Asumogha, the President of the union,
made the statement in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria at the end of ASUPs 77th
National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Lagos.
He said that a meeting of the committee and some
education stakeholders scheduled for June 24 did
not hold because no government official came.
“That meeting was supposed to be held, resolution
reached, and agreement signed.
“It was against the backdrop that we fixed the NEC
meeting so that, if we have the resolutions, we will
come here and suspend the strike.
“Incidentally, none of the government official came
for the meeting and because of that the meeting
did not hold,’’ he said.
The official said that the committee deferred the
meeting to July 1.
Mr. Asumogha said the union resolved to continue
the strike until the parties would be able to arrive at
a mutual understanding.
“This is the position of the NEC; we are meeting
again next Tuesday,” he said.
“We have been compromising since 2013. We have
continued to agree to suspend the strike but at
each point government always bridged the
agreement,” he said.
He appealed to the parents and students to
continue to be patient and support the union to
achieve its goals.
“The thing we are saying is that government should
be committed. When is it going to offset the arrears
of the salary scale CONTISS 15 it is owing since
2009?’’ he asked.
ASUP embarked on an indefinite strike in October
2013 to press home its demand for improvement in
the condition of service and infrastructure in
government-owned polytechnics, monotechnics
and colleges of technology.
It also demands that the Federal Government
should remove dichotomy between HND and degree
holders.
Other demands include the release of the White
Paper on the NEEDS assessment of polytechnics
and review of the Polytechnic Act by the National
Assembly, among others.
The government has met some of the demands,
including inauguration of governing councils and
setting up of the NEEDS assessment committees.

The Nigerian military on Saturday said its restriction
of the use of the Maiduguri airport was “purely for
security reasons.”
The airport is one of the international airports in
Nigeria mainly used to airlift Muslim pilgrims to
Saudi Arabia.
The restriction, which means the airport would not
be used for the annual pilgrimage, fuelled
speculations that the military was deliberately
preventing Nigerian Muslims a religious right.
The military, in a statement by its spokesperson,
Chris Olukolade, however, said the restrictions
followed a security assessment of the situation in
Nigeria.
The spokesperson said the assessment indicated
that a sudden massive air lift could not be
permitted in the light of the threats and ongoing
operations in the area.
Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State, the main
base of the Boko Haram group that has killed over
12,000 people since its insurgency began in 2009.
“Apparently, the implications of such massive airlift
and traffic from the facility in the light of present
security situation was not appreciated early enough
by those planning the exercise to enable proper
security procedure be installed for the important
exercise,” Mr. Olukolade said.
He however explained that alternative arrangement
was worked out with relevant authorities in the
state to ease movement of pilgrims.
The process, he said, has continued irrespective of
expected inconveniences which he said will be
taken care of in due time.
Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said the restrictions
had no religious or political connotation and that
the sensitivity of the security situation in Nigeria
calls for due caution.
“The intention has never been to jeopardize the
airlifting of pilgrims as has been wrongly
portrayed,” he said.
He appealed to the media not to yield itself to the
pressure of those seeking to make political or
economic capital out of the security situation.

The militants allegedly snatched N1 million cash
from a telecoms staff.
Gunmen on Saturday invaded Zion community of
Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, shooting
sporadically, the Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger
Delta said.
The Commander of the JTF, Emmanuel Atewe, said
on Saturday that the force got reports that the
armed militants were from Ekene community in the
same local government.
“The hoodlums harassed, extorted money and
consumable items from their victims before
escaping,” Mr. Atewe, a Major General, said. “The
same gang also intercepted and diverted two
passenger boats and abducted passengers on
board.”
The soldier said one of the passengers on the boat
included a technician working with a
communication company, who was on assignment
to effect repairs on a faulty community
communication mast.
“The gang also carted away the sum of N1 million
from the staff of the company,” he said.
Mr. Atewe said his troops are currently on the trail
of the criminals.
He said the JTF would deal decisively with vessels
and any vehicle deployed in transporting stolen
crude or involved in illegal bunkering. He also
warned owners of vessels, barges, and tankers
used for illegal oil bunkering activities in the Niger
Delta to withdraw such services from oil thieves.
The Commander threatened to henceforth blow up
any vessel involved in oil bunkering in the area.
He accused vessel and truck owners of renting
them to oil thieves who use them to siphon and
convey stolen crude oil within Niger Delta.
He noted that the measures became imminent as oil
thieves often abandoned such rented vessels to
evade arrest on sighting JTF troops; while the
owners of the vessels come to claim them feigning
ignorance of the illicit trade.
“The command is committed to the protection of oil
platforms against oil thieves which is in line with its
mandate,” the general said. “I therefore wish to
reiterate that vessel owners should always verify
the intentions of the oil bunkerers before hiring
them out their vessels to them.”
He also said the JTF has handed over 3 suspects
and a truck arrested for illegal oil bunkering to the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,
for prosecution.
According to the commander, the suspects were
arrested on June 15 by troops of the command at
Ogale Eleme in Rivers State in a Mack truck with
registration number XX 939 AGL.
The truck was laden with 45,000 liters of suspected
stolen Automated Gas Oil, AGO, from a vandalised
NNPC pipeline.
He said two people were also arrested for
attempting to bribe officials with N200,000 to
facilitate the release of the truck and suspects.
The two suspects have also been handed over to
the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.

treatment has become common.
The capital of Nepal is no different from many

black market traffickers are meeting that demand.
Up to 7,000 kidneys are obtained illegally every
year, according to a report by Global Financial
Integrity.

That same report shows the illegal organ trade
generates profits between $514 million to $1
billion a year.
In Kathmandu, we spotted a couple begging on
the street for their son's kidney treatment.
Jeet Bahadur Magar and his wife spent their entire
savings to treat their son's kidney disease.
Out of money and options, they are now out on
the street hoping to raise enough funds to cover
the medical bills.
