The nation’s power generation capacity dropped to 3,313.8 megawatts (MW) as at yesterday, according to the daily operational report released by Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
This indicates a reduction of 487MW of electricity from the 3800MW said to have been generated by the end of last month.
LEADERSHIP gathered that there has been fluctuation in the power output as a result of some factors associated with the operational system of the power stations PHCN said.
According to the report obtained by Leadership from the PHCN headquarters in Abuja, Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro power stations as at yesterday, generated a total of 350, 334, and 284 megawatts of electricity respectively. Egbim, Trans Amadi, Sapale, Ibom, Okpai, Afam VI, Delta, Geregu, Olorunsogo phase II, among others of 961, 21.8, 84, 32.3, 224, 334, 50, 250, 101.5 megawatts respectively.

4000 MW - thing was one big Hoax - We never at any time hit that target.

It is my delight to inform my fellow Nigerians that our economy grew by 8.29% during the last quarter of 2010 mostly due to the modest increase in power supply (which this administration is working hard to further improve) and a substantial growth in the agricultural sector. This is good but I know we can do better and with our joint efforts a double digit growth is within reach this quarter. GEJ

But unfortunately present and past governments have refused to surround themselves with technocrats like yourselves but rather surround themselves with yes men who unable propose ideas as " Oga might get offended" .

Nigeria needs nothing less than 50,000 mw  to see anything like 16 -18 hours of electricity across the country. Along with  that you also need a plan to increase by 10% yearly.  With almost stable electricity income will increase which means more power consuming electronics will be purchased like plasma tvs, a/c units, microwaves and similar.

I suspect to achieve this level of generation  - the electricity has to be truly deregulated ( and not some padi padi arrangement like we witnessed with the refineries) and let private individuals or companies finance these costly project as i cant see how the government can afford to build these power plants.

As of Late 2008  it will cost roughly $2 million to build a 1 MW coal fired plant . Multiply the figure by 25,000 MW give or take bearing in mind economies of scale it is very expensive.
