The Congressional Black Caucus condemned Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal for using “openly bigoted” language after she called House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries an “AIPAC monkey” and an “errand boy.”
“To be clear, there isn’t a non-racist way to call Leader Jeffries, a Black man, a ‘monkey’ or ‘errand boy,’” the caucus said. Addressing podcast host Wajahat Ali, it added: “This is what happens when we hold ourselves to such low standards for what’s allowable in our discourse. People get comfortable being openly bigoted.”
“We have to stop platforming and trafficking in anti-Black racism, whether it’s on the political right or the left,” the group added.
Jebreal made the remarks during an appearance on Ali’s “The Left Hook” podcast while attacking Jeffries over his support for Israel. “He is a bought and paid by AIPAC monkey,” she said, immediately adding that she did not mean the comment “in a racist way.” She then described Jeffries as “basically an errand boy.”
Ali interjected that the word “monkey” carried “terrible racial connotations” when directed at a Black person. Jebreal said she had been referring to the three wise monkeys, traditionally depicted as seeing, hearing and speaking no evil.
Jonathan Chait, a staff writer at The Atlantic, argued that Jebreal’s attempted explanation left her accusation carrying an antisemitic implication. “The ‘not racist’ version is that the Black Speaker of the House is a brainless puppet of the Jews,” he wrote on X.
Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley, a prominent member of the party’s progressive wing, also condemned Jebreal’s language. “Calling Leader Jeffries or any Black man a monkey or errand boy is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable under any circumstances,” she wrote on X.
New York Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres said: “Calling a Black man a ‘monkey’ is racist. Full stop.” He accused parts of the political left of applying a double standard to Jebreal’s remarks.
Former U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema can be sued under North Carolina’s homewrecker law over her relationship with a member of her security detail, a judge ruled Friday.
Sinema has acknowledged having a romantic relationship with Matthew Ammel but argued that she can’t be sued in North Carolina because she has no connection to the state.
U.S. District Judge David A. Bragdon rejected that argument, saying nine text messages she sent Ammel while he was in the state give North Carolina jurisdiction over her. He found it implausible that she was unaware of Ammel’s whereabouts when she texted him.
Sinema’s lawyer, Steven Epstein, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
The lawsuit, filed by Ammel’s ex-wife, seeks financial damages from Sinema, who represented Arizona in the U.S. House and later the Senate for one term that ended early last year. North Carolina is one of a handful of states that allow jilted spouses to sue for “alienation of affection” to seek compensation from a third party responsible for the breakup of their marriage.

A man dubbed "The Butt Sniffer," who was previously arrested on suspicion of inappropriate behavior at Southern California businesses, has been arrested again after reports of similar activity at two Glendale stores.
Calese Crowder, 39, was arrested Friday afternoon after two stores in Glendale reported a man acting suspiciously and bending down around people, Glendale police told NBC4 Investigates. Police reviewed security camera video from both locations and Crowder was identified as the suspect.
He was arrested a short time later in the 100 block of South Brand Boulevard and arrested on suspicion of a parole violation. Crowder was being held without bail.
Law enforcement sources told NBC4 Investigates that one of the businesses was a Marshalls clothing store. At about the same time a grocery store in the 1500 block of Glenoaks Bouelvard called 911 to report a customer bending down behind people and attempting to sniff, the sources said.
The investigation is ongoing and the case will be submitted to prosecutors for possible criminal charges.
In July 2025, Crowder was arrested at the Burbank Nordstrom Rack after reports of someone roaming the women's department and sexually harassing a female customer, according to the Burbank Police Department.
The next month, he was arrested again after allegedly sniffing a woman’s behind inside a Walgreens store in Burbank.
Crowder has a history of similar offenses in Glendale and Burbank dating back to 2021, according to police.
Crowder was arrested Nov. 24 after failing to meet an annual sex-offender registration requirement for more than two months, Glendale police told NBC4 Investigates. The Glendale Police Department Assaults Unit arrested Crowder at his residence.
Crowder was on parole at the time for a burglary.
In December, he was sentenced to 99 days in jail for a parole violation. Crowder was back before a judge in April for parole violations and was sentenced to 105 days in jail.
The jury convicted Davis on one count of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon on Monday, Aug. 31, after less than three hours of deliberations. Davis is the only person charged in the hip hop legend's death and faces life in prison.
USA TODAY reached out to Davis' attorney Michael Sanft for comment.
During the two-week trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Davis provided the gun and instructed members of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, which he was allegedly a leader of, to shoot Shakur in Las Vegas on the night of Sept. 7, 1996.
In the prosecution's opening statement, Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal called the crime an act of "gang retaliation and revenge.” The murder charge initially carried a potential gang enhancement, but after the verdict, prosecutors announced they would not pursue it due to "witness logistics."
Davis will be sentenced on Oct. 13.
What happened the night Tupac Shakur was shot?
At the time, the rapper was signed to Marion "Suge" Knight's Death Row Records, which was associated with the Bloods gang, while Davis was a leader of the rivaling South Side Crips. Prosecutors believe Davis called for the shots as an act of retaliation after Shakur and Knight beat up Davis' nephew, also a Crips member, earlier that night.
Knight, who is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence in California for a fatal hit-and-run in 2015, was also shot but survived. Shakur died from his injuries six days later.
When former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Greg Dale, who rode in the ambulance to the hospital with Shakur, testified last week, he said the music icon refused to identify any suspects.
“No, we'll take care of it," Dale testified were Shakur's final words.
Death Row also had ongoing tensions with Sean "Diddy" Combs' Bad Boy Records, a rivalry prosecutors said became intertwined with tensions between the Bloods and Crips. Prosecutors said Knight employed members of the Bloods-affiliated Mob Piru as security for his label, while Combs hired Davis as "unofficial security" for him and his Bad Boy artists when they were on the West Coast.
Former Bloods member James McDonald and former Death Row security chief Reggie Wright Jr. testified about those security arrangements and said they were in Las Vegas the night Shakur was shot because of tensions with Bad Boy. Former Crips member Denvonta Lee also testified that he spent time with Combs and Bad Boy associates in the '90s, when Davis was "known for hustling."
Keffe D's own words became key evidence at trial
Decades passed before Davis was indicted in 2023, four years after the release of a memoir he co-wrote, titled “Compton Street Legend: Notorious Keffe D’s Street-Level Accounts of Tupac and Biggie Murders, Death Row Origins, Suge Knight, Puffy Combs, and Crooked Cops." In it, Davis admitted to being in the car and providing the weapon used to shoot Shakur.
“Had Mr. Davis never opened his mouth, never written the book, he would probably not have been prosecuted for the crime," prosecutors said during a trial readiness hearing in June.
Throughout the trial, prosecutors pointed to the book, along with police interviews from 2008 and 2009 in which Davis admitted his involvement, as evidence of his guilt. The defense argued that Davis had lied about his involvement and characterized the evidence against him as "incomplete."
Davis' admissions remained at the center of the prosecution's case.
"The one thing [Davis] never says from 1998 to 2023 is, ‘I wasn’t there,'" Palal said in his closing argument.
Clark County District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo added: “Mr. Davis is attempting to escape responsibility for a crime everybody knows he committed, even him, and he admits to it.”
United States singer Lionel Richie has been hospitalised in St Louis, Missouri, United States, after falling ill following his concert at The Muny in Forest Park on Saturday night.
The 77-year-old singer reportedly went to hospital after the performance as a precaution and was treated in the intensive care unit while doctors carried out tests.
He remains hospitalised as of Monday afternoon and is expected to be discharged on Tuesday, according to TMZ.
Sources said Richie sought medical attention out of an abundance of caution, with doctors reportedly considering dehydration as a possible cause of his condition.
The hospitalisation came after concert attendees noticed that Richie appeared to be struggling towards the end of his St Louis performance. While performing his final song, his iconic hit All Night Long, he asked for a chair and continued singing while seated.
The development has renewed concerns about the singer’s health, coming about two months after he fell ill during a concert in St Paul, Minnesota.
Richie had been performing at the Grand Casino Arena in June as part of his joint Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire when he stopped the show during a performance of Three Times a Lady.
His band later left the stage, and more than 40 minutes after the interruption, saxophonist Dino Soldo returned to inform the audience that Richie would not be able to continue.
”Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well, said saxophonist Dino Soldo, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune. He won’t be able to continue. Additional information will be available.”
Fans who attended the Minnesota concert also expressed concern on social media, saying Richie had appeared unwell during the performance.

AN area court judge in Benue State Judiciary has been arrested by the Benue State CID at Makurdi for allegedly demanding and receiving 20 Naira bribe from an accused who has a case in his court.
According to a dependable police source, the judge had allegedly demanded a sum of 40 Naira from the accused in order to help him in his case. But the accused after some hesitation, produced only 20 Naira which was marked by the police.
The accused was standing trial in a charge of allegedly receiving stolen property before the judge. His case had been adjourned several times while the accused was put in prison custody.
Confirming the story, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. O.A. Olowu, said, his men closed up on the area court judge immediately he received the bribe from the accused.
He said that the Ministry of Justice had directed that the judge's case be taken to the Makurdi High Court for summary trial.
Meanwhile, the commissioner added, the suspect's department had been advised to interdict the judge pending the determination of the case.
Mr Olowu explained that the police had given bail to the judge while his case would soon be taken to court for trial.
A traditional Ugandan ruler named as the world's youngest monarch has died aged 34, his prime minster announced.
Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became king of Tooro in western Uganda at just three years old in 1995 after the death of his father.
The Tooro kingdom did not disclose the cause of King Oyo's death, but a Ugandan government minister was quoted in local media saying that he had been critically ill and was seeking treatment in the US.
Though Uganda is governed by an elected president and parliament, it has several traditional kingdoms which continue to have significant cultural influence despite not having political power.
Announcing his death, Tooro's Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki called his passing on Thursday an "immeasurable loss" to the royal family and the people of Tooro.
"I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time," Akiiki said on Friday. "May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace."
The Tooro Kingdom follows a hereditary system in selecting its monarch.
Oyo was not officially married, but Akiiki said "the continuity of the Crown is assured".
"His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom," he explained.
When he became king in 1995 a regency, which included the queen mother, was established until Oyo turned 18 when there was an official coronation.
The young king was well respected by his people and according to a report in the Daily Monitor newspaper he promoted causes such as youth empowerment, education and climate conservation, as well as HIV/Aids awareness.
The country's largest and most influential traditional institution, the Buganda Kingdom, said it mourned with the people of Tooro following the death of their monarch, labelling him a valuable figure to Uganda.
Similarly, the Rwenzururu Kingdom also extended its condolences to "all those mourning this great loss", according to local media reports.
Others have also paid their respects to the late king.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations, honoured King Oyo as a "true friend of the beautiful game", and announced a moment of silence before the kick-off of all matches until 4 September in memory of his "legacy, love, passion and contribution" to the sport.
Government minister Margaret Muhanga described the mood in the kingdom as "sombre... you can't see anyone smiling".
The king was "at the prime of his life", she said in a video shared on social media, "as young as he was, he had an impact on his kingdom".
Muhanga said they would be planting a million trees in his honour during the mourning period, and wants to ask the neighbouring districts in Tooro to do the same.
Uganadan musician Juliana Kanyomozi called it a "very dark day for Tooro", in an Instagram post. "Gone too soon. What a loss!!!!"
Meanwhile, pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, called for King Oyo's "soul to rest in eternal peace".

Most of Kano state, infact most of KEDC's catchment area is rural and made up of lots of villages where people refuse to pay for power or under pay and defend themselves by saying they are too poor to pay for power.
