PRESIDENT TINUBU DEPARTS FOR CHINA ON OFFICIAL VISIT

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja for Beijing, China, on Thursday, August 29, on an official visit.

President Tinubu will have a brief layover in the United Arab Emirates.

In China, the President will meet with President Xi Jinping and will hold meetings with Chinese business leaders on the sidelines of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials on the trip.

KYIV (Reuters) -President Volodymyr Zelenskiy touted a newly developed Ukrainian "drone missile" on Saturday that he said would take the war back to Russia and scornfully derided Russia's Vladimir Putin as a "sick old man from Red Square".

As Ukraine marked 33 years of post-Soviet independence, Zelenskiy said the new weapon, Palianytsia, was faster and more powerful than the domestically made drones that Kyiv has so far used to fight back against Russia, striking its oil refineries and military airfields.

"Our enemy will ... know what the Ukrainian way for retaliation is. Worthy, symmetrical, long-ranged," he said.

Zelenskiy said the new class of Ukrainian weapon had been used for a successful strike on a target in Russia, but did not say where.

He used derisive language to describe Russia's 71-year-old president and the nuclear rhetoric coming out of Moscow.

"A sick old man from Red Square who constantly threatens everyone with the red button will not dictate any of his red lines to us," he said in a video on the Telegram messaging app.

NNPC Limited has reported a net profit of N3.297 trillion for the financial year concluding December 2023, reflecting a 28% rise compared to the N2.548 trillion profit achieved in 2022.

On Monday, Chief Corporate Communications Officer Olufemi Soneye announced that this milestone, representing the pinnacle of success in the company's 46-year history, was revealed at a global press conference held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja.

The statement said, “The NNPC Limited has released its 2023 Audited Financial Statement (AFS), declaring a net profit of N3.297 trillion at the close of the financial year which ended in December 2023, an increase of over N700billion (28%) when compared to the 2022 profit of N2.548trillion.”

Belarusian President and key Putin ally Aleksandr Lukashenko has called for peace between Russia and Ukraine as Kyiv's incursion into the Kursk region of Russia enters its third week.

His plea, broadcast to Belarusian state media and published in part on his website, is set to be featured on Russian state-owned channel Rossia 1 on Sunday.

Referring to the two-and-a-half-year conflict which began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has left hundreds of thousands dead, Lukashenko said: “Let's sit down at the negotiating table and end this scuffle."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Ukrainian forces have taken control of the Russian town of Sudzha, over a week after his forces launched a cross-border incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.
