"11 o'clock". The only clock in the nursery read. Bidemi yawned and lifting the boy, placed him back on his bed after giving him a kiss on the cheek. He took a final look at the nursery which like other rooms in the house was decorated by Pearl, his ever creative wife. The tiles on the floors were painted blue to match with the curtains which also was a shade of blue and brown giving it that masculine aura. Cartoon figures such as spiderman, spongebob,Tom and jerry adorning the walls. The only furniture available was the brown cushion in which Pearl sat on whenever she wanted to breast feed him or read him bedtime stories. She had made sure every available space in the room be stuffed with toys of different sizes, colors, and shapes.
They both loved their son and would do anything to give him the very best..Money wasn't a problem. All thanks to God and their hard work.
He took a deep breath, he missed her so much.. Taking a final glance at Robert, he walked out of his room and headed straight to his wife's room.. Pearl occupied four out of the ten bedrooms in the house.. They both love space and due to the kind of jobs, they did, needed all the space they could get especially his wife.
Upstairs, she had convert the store room and turned it into a large office for herself, there she made crucial decision that concerns her fashion house and sometimes when the pressure was too much, seek solitude in there. Her mum who also is a share holder and back bone of the company with her younger sister worked round thee clock creating new designs in there whenever the fashion house felt too stuffy.
Stepping inside, her familiar scent hit him and sent shivers down his spine. He sucked it all in, holding to it like his life depended on it. Her wardrobe was open and her clothes littered the floor and bed.. He had always wondered how his wife could put the whole house in order and couldn't maintain such with her wardrobe. She always wasn't sure of what to put on and always he had to play audience to her 'self made' fashion show.

That was so sweet and probably the first time anyone had appreciated her. Her own mother had abandoned her immediately she showed her ugly face to the world and her grandmother had made sure she reminded her of every waking minute of her life that she was bastard. She pinched herself to stop the tears and face gave out no emotions.
"Its nothing really, I love Robert and I admire you and your wife. You both have done so much for me".
He nodded, the girl was just so humble, she would make a good wife. "Did anyone call to ask for me or madam?"
"Yes sir, but it was for madam. One of those magazine people want to do an interview on her".
He panicked. This was what you got from marrying a celebrity as a wife and to God he wished this battle of theirs remained private. "What did you tell them?" He asked in a hurry.
She heard the fear in his voice. Was he afraid she would spill out their family dark secret to the media? But she killed whatever doubt or anger that had raised its ugly head immediately she noticed it.
"That madam was currently unavailable and that they should contact her publicist".
He heaved a sigh of relief. "That's very good Omo, thank you again". He had to give it to her,she was damn smart. Now he knew why his wife trusted her and he made the promise never to underestimate her again.
Silently he thanked his mother in-law again for coming to their aid and bringing Omo to them though Pearl initially had rained fire and brimstone that she didn't want a nanny for her son. But they hadn't had a choice then, Pearl's sickness had just been detected and she had been restless and forgetful. He had been working late hours because the company was trying to win a huge account and so he had quickly called his mother in-law.
Trust her, she had handled the situation very well and brought in Omo, who thank goodness has never given a chance to regret that decision.
He came back to the present with a jolt as he felt her waving her hands in front of him. He frowned, God, has he started loosing it? He hoped not!. "What?"
Omo smiled at him. She felt so sorry for him and the boy. " I said goodnight and asked if you would want me to put Robert back on his bed so you could rest."
He lifted the man and placed him on his right shoulder, the boy clutching to him like air.. The simple act causing a tightening at the pit of his stomach. The boy felt so soft. "Tiger I'm not leaving you alone ok? And turning to Omo, "its okay, you should go rest I will handle the rest, Goodnight".
"Goodnight" Omo replied and excused herself from the room heading to the left wing of the house that had been allocated to her alone.

CONTINUATION
"That had been easy!" Bidemi found himself saying as he walked from the front door to the spacious room that evidently was the dining room. At the center was a large marble glass table with six brown chairs made from hard wood surrounding it, adorned on the table was a flower vase filled with lilac, her favorite flowers. She hated roses, it was too boring and almost every girl favorite flower. At the right hand corner of the table, a fruit bowl filled to the brim with different types of fruits especially apple, her favorite fruit sat majestically. It was obvious the house was clean as he could see his tired reflection on the surface of the table. He discarded his suit case and his jacket on the table and taking the staircase walked straight to his son's nursery. He found Omolara, the nanny whispering a lullaby softly into the boy's ears trying to coo him to sleep and on seeing him stopped.
"Oh please go on".
"Welcome Sir, How's Madam? I never knew she tried killing herself or else I wouldn't have gone on the errand". She voiced all at once.
He had to smile at the girl's ability to ask too many questions all at the same time. He wasn't surprised, these young lads of this generation lacked patience. But come to think of it, Omo wasn't a small girl; she was probably twenty-five or twenty-six. Dark skinned, petite but good looking in her own way, her small frame and innocent looking face just gave her a disadvantage. She was so inquisitive and carried out her task with much fervor and vibrancy common among the youths of the twenty first century.
"The worst has happened and she is doing very well. We should be expecting her home soon".
"That's wonderful". Omo said and held out the baby for him to hold.
He stretched out his hands and received the baby who was sleeping peacefully and wished he could find such peace. Suddenly, warm liquid seeped down the front of his white shirt. "Oh Rob. You didn't ..."
He looked down at his shirt and groaned. "You did". And raised his face on time to catch Omo trying very hard to suppress her laughter.
He stuck out his tongue at her. "God ahead and laugh all you want."
Omo chuckled and smiled at the way her boss was holding the baby. It was obvious her employers loved their son, too bad that wicked sickness found now of all times to trouble this household and at this crucial point when the little man needed his mother more than ever.
I'm sorry, I was about changing his diapers when you walked in."
"Its okay." And when he saw her coming towards him with a fresh diaper, volunteered to do it. "May I?
She nodded and watched him as he laid the boy on his bed and went about the task. she had just been here for six months now but she had seen all the love, Joy, tears, laughter and sadness this family has shared together. She never had such love while growing up so she easily recognized it anywhere.
"Have you eaten?" She asked.
He was taken aback for a minute as his thought had wandered and so had forgotten she was still in the room. "Excuse me?"
"I'm sorry sir; I only wanted to find out if you were hungry because I prepared dinner."
He smiled at her. " Thank you but I'm not hungry." And on a second thought added. "You've been a blessing to this family and from the depth of my heart, I'm saying a big thank you".

CHAPTER TWO:
After much persuasion from both the nurses and Pearl, he had left her at the hospital with the promise of visiting her first thing in the morning, and while he was there, he had called Pearl's parents to inform them of the situation at ground and his parents to get their prayers and lean on them. He needed to check on their son and Omolara, their son's nanny, they must be worried.
Sitting inside his car, he tried not to think of his wife at the hospital and all of today's event, and decided to concentrate on the journey back home.. He maneuvered his way towards the end of his street once he got into the estate and the tall black gate of his duplex came into view. Immediately, the gate began to slide open on its own accord knowing fully well that Hassan, his gate man must have heard the car horns. He wasn't in the mood for any questioning and hoped Hassan and his family would honor that request.. He needed rest and needed it fast!.
After parking the range rover in his usual parking lot at the rear view side of the garage and was about taking his suit case, he felt movement around him and looking up saw Hassan, Amina, his wife and their two daughters staring up at him with anxious and worried faces.
He growled, God!. These people should let him be. He had declined against the gate man bringing his family to live with them after he had employed him.. But Pearls had been insistent, laying claims to the fact that she was pregnant and needed all the help she could get. She wasn't good at lying and he knew she had fallen in love with the girls and wanted to make sure she would be a good mother. And so he had agreed but after giving stern waring that the kids shouldn't be found roaming about the compound when they were not needed.

"Why all these thoughts now?", he asked himself but he already knew the answer to that question.. He missed his wife!.

He opened the door and came out, his six feet four frame overshadowing that of his gate man who was a five feet three. His height always made people feel intimidated and right now he wished it did, but that wouldn't be the case as he noticed the gate man and his family were intent on getting some answers from him.
"Hassan, what's wrong?"
"Ermm...Oga. How madam??" He drawled in that hausa accent of his.
Bidemi saw the concern written all over the man's face and in his heart, quickly asked for forgiveness to God for his earlier reaction.
He smiled at the man "She's doing great by God's grace. Thanks for asking".

The gate man heaved a sigh of relief and passed the message to his wife and daughters in Hausa who also seemed very excited about the news.
"Oga, we pray to Allah for madam".
"Ooh, that's so kind of you. Thank you". He moved his jacket from his right hand to the left indicating that he wanted to go inside but he noticed the man wasn't done yet.
"Anything else?" He asked.
Hassan countenance had fallen, he was no longer cheerful and pausing looked back at his wife for assurance.
"Oga. I sorry well well.. I swear I know no say madam wan..."
Bidemi cut him short, he knew where this was heading to and sure wasn't ready for a reminder that he was partly at fault. How could he not have seen that she was hurting?.
"Its not your fault Hassan" , he said with uncertainty, and wanting to assure himself that that sentence wasn't meant for his gate man alone, placed his hand on the man's shoulder.
"Its not your fault" he repeated.
Locking the cars. He walked into the house.

When he finally found her, he stood afar off staring at her pale frame lying on the bed. Even in that form, she was still the most beautiful woman he had ever laid his eyes on. He choked as he tried to stop the tears from coming. At that instant, he felt her move and quickly realized that the rays from the sun coming in from the window was preventing her from opening her eyes. He rushed to her side and using his well built frame, shielded her. Seeing this, Pearl looked up at him and smiled. But he had prepared himself well, that smile of hers could move even the meanest bone in his body but this, today wasn't one of such days. He looked down at her with his eyes plainly making it clear that she had to do more than smile to impress him.
Pearl noticed his frown and realized that she had hurt him. This wasn't how she had planned it.By now she was suppose to be a million miles away. Knowing her husband when he gave you that 'You can't fool me' stare of his, he meant business and you shouldn't wait his precious time but go straight to the point.
"Bide. I'm sorry for what I put you through, everything..." She started but he didn't allow her to finish.
"You're sorry? That's the most horrifying word I've heard today. And I can tell you don't have the slightest idea of what I've been through these past months, all for you! He screamed at her.
She closed her eyes for a few seconds, his words were cutting right through her heart but she wasn't giving up yet. She started again. " I know and I don't know! But all I know is that I've been the one carrying the pain and burden of this sickness..." the tears had come rushing with full force.
"When did you become this mean?"
She was shocked but wasn't ready to back out now. Talking alone was zapping out all the strength in her. "That's not what I mean!'...
"What do you mean, because all I can make out is you saying I've not been there?". How dare she make him so angry like this?
"Ever since we learnt of this alzheimer disease. He continued, our lives changed. Not just yours!." "But you know what didn't change?" He asked her and didn't wait for an answer. "My love for you haven't changed". His voice had taken a softer tone ." It still burns and ache for you like the first time I set my eyes on you. And today coming back home and finding you in a pool of your own blood". He stopped and swallowed, the memory was still fresh and it reminded of how close he had come close to losing her. " I almost ran mad, and I thought I had lost you..."
Pearl knew he wouldn't continue so she did the only thing she could at the moment. She forced her self to move and hugged him tight. " Hug me please and don't let me go ".
That shocked him and recovering did as she had requested. Never in their two years of marriage and three years of her playing hide and seek with him had she ever given up so easily during a heated argument. That has always been his role, but he knew she was gradually losing it and remembering the doctors advice tightened his grip on her, holding her like a fragile glass cup and didn't want to imagine not having her in his life.
After some few minutes, he raised her chin up and stared into her face. " We would fight this together and win, the God we serve won't forsake us now". And he felt her nod and slept in his arms.

He had never felt lost or scared in his entire life before and all through the one hour drive from his lekki residence to the hospital, he had kept muttering prayer and asking his beloved wife to fight for her life. The doctor came out of the hallway facing him ,glove in hand and beckoned to him to come closer. He obeyed and getting there asked the first question that had been running through his mind.
'Doctor, how's she?'
The doctor placed a hand on his shoulder and giving him a handshake. ' I've never in my 26 years of my profession seen a woman as strong and brave as your wife'' he replied. And seeing the unsatisfied look on the young man face continued. '' She's out of harm way and right now taking a nap''.
Bidemi had to smile, give it to that wife of his to make light of hard situation. But why had she tried to commit suicide? Didn't she love him any more and saw suicide as the best option to leave the marriage? What if he hadn't left the office and had decided to come on early, what would have been the story now? There was so many 'what's if' and only her could give him the answer he wanted.
As if sensing the young man battle with his emotions, doctor ken called out to him.
''Son, you know you can ask me any questions, we are family remember?''
Bidemi was shocked, sure he wanted to ask him load of questions but he was having a hard time getting around to asking. ''Be a man''! A tiny voice said to him.
He swallowed, ''dad?, I can call you that right''?
''Sure. I am your fathers best friend and have seen cases worse than this between your parents''.
Yea he knew but this wasn't about his parents.
''Do you think her sickness made her to attempt suicide?''
He had been thinking of that too but he hadn't come to a conclusion and when pearl had finally come out of unconsciousness and he had tried to talk to her she had kept quiet. He felt bidemi hands on his shoulder and quickly tuck his thoughts away.
'' Professionally, I can't state. But as a father and friend. I am dying to know myself. Alzheimer patient are difficult to predict. Suicide is never an option but this is a difficult stage for her.
''Difficult enough for her to attempt to take her life and leave me with our seven month old baby?!'' To him that was madness.
Doctor Ken shook his head and before he could give a reply, a nurse came rushing:
''Doctor there is an emergency!''
''Where?''
''ER two''
And he turned and gripped bidemi by the wrist, looking him straight in the eyes muttered: '' Be strong for her'' and quickly turned and walked away with the nurse who immediately began to fill him in on the next patient.
''How long can my strength last?'' Bidemi said to no one and doing an about turn went in search of his wife.
