The Nigerian government announced the Samoa agreement on June 28, 2024, alongside other countries in Brussels, Belgium. However, the signing of the document has raised controversy over Nigeria’s LGBTQ+ stance. What the Samoa Agreement is all about The Samoa agreement aims to address global challenges and enhance cooperation in multiple areas. The agreement provides a framework for member countries to collaborate on sustainable development, economic growth, and improving living standards for their citizens. The Daily Trust’s Controversial Report A controversial report published by Dailly Trust on 4th of July, 2024 stated that the Samoa agreement signed by the Nigerian government contained a pro-LGBT clause. This caused Nigerians to criticise the government arguing that it went against African values and moral standards. However, a fact-check by TheCable revealed this to be false, stating that due to references to sexual orientation and gender identity, construed as LGBTQ+ rights, several ACP countries, Nigeria included, declined to sign. Lagos and other states in Nigeria are beginning to experience fuel scarcity as private depot owners hiked the ex-depot price of petrol from N630 to N720 per liter. This occurred as fuel scarcity intensified in Abuja and nearby states on Sunday, with some filling stations selling PMS for as much as N900 per liter. Punch reported that several filling stations in Lagos, Ogun, and some other states have run out of stock as they refused to purchase high-priced fuel from private depots. Reasons for the Fuel Scarcity In an interview, Hammed Fashola, the National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, stated that many filling stations remained closed because they had no fuel in their tanks. He said, "Those that shut their stations do not have fuel to sell. When you don’t have fuel, you cannot open your station. That is the problem. You know the NNPC is the sole importer of this product. I think it is in the best position to tell us what is actually going on. "Currently, independent marketers cannot buy what the private depots are selling. They are selling fuel between N715 and N720 per liter. How much will marketers sell the product? Look at the cost of bringing it to their depots; with transportation and other depot expenses, it will be too costly for them. That is why the stations are shut down. Some marketers refuse to go and buy because they know the masses cannot afford high-priced petrol in this economy. That is the situation for now," the IPMAN leader stated. Kidnapping, though existent before now, is on the rise and has become the new "oil boom" for miscreants and terrorists, who demand ransoms as high as 300-900 million Naira from their victims. Nigerians traveling on highways, between states, or even staying in their homes no longer feel safe as the rate of kidnapping skyrockets. Gunmen reportedly abducted Janet Galadima-Gimba, a customary court judge, along with her four sons from their residence in the Mahuta area of Kaduna on the 23rd of June, 2024. The abductors, numbering about 15, invaded the judge’s residence at night when her husband, a medical doctor, was away on duty. Tragically, Victor Gimba, the first child was killed while in captivity, as the family could not provide the 300 million ransom demanded by their abductors. Similarly, Hajiya Hauwa’u Adamu, the mother of famous Hausa musician Dauda Adamu, popularly known as Rarara, was kidnapped, with her abductors reportedly demanding a ransom of 900 million Naira. Recall that in March, bandits kidnapped 16 people in the Gonin Gora area of Kaduna and demanded a ransom of 40 trillion Naira, 11 Hilux vans, and 150 motorcycles. Ruth Erikan James, popularly called Veekee James, clearly fulfills the Proverbs 22:29 scripture: "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings." Her grass-to-grace story shows that it is possible to live out your dreams regardless of your background. It's a story of how talent, passion, determination, diligence, excellence, and consistency can set you above your peers. Born and raised in Ajegunle The multi-talented owner of the Veekee James and Erikan fashion brands was born without a silver spoon. She was born and raised in Ajegunle. Veekee lost her father at the age of 5, and her mother, who was a tailor, was left to cater to the family, which included Veekee and her two younger brothers. She recalls being sent out of school for owing fees but received support from her uncles. Ajegunle, akin to a slum, saw Veekee James and her family hustle to get a good place to bathe at the very least. According to Veekee, Ajegunle definitely isn't a good place to raise a child. Veekee witnessed families who, through generations, remained stagnant, replicating the poverty of their fathers, and girls getting pregnant out of wedlock. Good role models were hard to come by, but her mother did all she could to raise her and her brothers right. Fulfilling her family's desires Veekee's family wanted her to become a doctor. She was "Jambed by JAMB" three times before finally settling to study Biochemistry, a course she didn't like, at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom. In an interview with YouTuber and vlogger Tayo Aina, Davido recounted their meeting: “I was in school for a year before I blew up. That was when I met my wife. I remember the day I saw her. I can never forget it. I was in a Prado, and I looked behind and saw this girl walking. It was Chioma. I told Lati, 'Omo, I like that girl, go and call her for me.' We might not live in a perfect world, but we can contribute towards making it better, if not for the present, at least for our future and for generations unborn. Youth symbolizes strength, and the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), led by Damilola Hamid Balogun, is leveraging that advantage to bring about significant changes in the world via Sustainable Development Goals. We can describe the YSDN initiative as "By youths, for all." In this interview, Barr. Omatseye Carpe, the Operations Manager of Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), discusses the vision of YSDN, its impact, challenges, success stories, and future goals. Can you give us an overview of the Youth Sustainable Development Network and its primary mission? The name Youth Sustainable Development Network explains what the organization is all about: bridging the gap between youths and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was founded on the understanding that there are 17 goals addressing global issues that affect everyone and require immediate action. Often, in this region, we are not aware of what these global issues are or how they affect us individually or collectively. It is well-known that youths are the driving force of any nation, and if anything is to be done concerning these issues, youths must be involved. That is why YSDN is focused on youth development, youth participation and youth inclusion in the achievement of the SDGs. What are some specific programmes or initiatives YSDN has implemented to create an enabling environment for young people to contribute to the SDGs? To achieve our goals, we have several avenues that we use and currently employ. We have conferences, programmes, and projects. Reaching out to youths is not easy, but we've used different methods and partnered with various organizations worldwide. We have our annual conference, which over the years has impacted about 10,000 youths. The conference theme changes every year, focusing on youth inclusion in the SDGs, and addressing issues such as climate change, energy, hunger, and poverty. Our conference this year is coming up in Morocco. Everything is set, and we are hoping for a successful event. There is also a project currently underway called EcoLearn. It seeks to bring the SDGs to public schools in a non-conventional way. We are working on this in partnership with other youth-led organisations, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, the Public Service Staff Department Centre in Magodo, and the Netherlands consulate in Lagos. The project kicked off last month. Read More: https://crispng.com/spotlight-ysdn-the-nigerian-organisation-bridging-the-gap-between-youths-and-sdgs/
