ADAMAWA STATE BYE ELECTION, report from the field without prejudice: "After final collation of results SDP won the chairmanship with over 1200 votes difference but the electoral officer refused to announce the winner that he will not announce it until he reached Yola, the agents insisted that it must be announced in the collation centre as agreed upon. When the argument was going on the police started shooting sporadically, the result fell off from the EO in his attempt to run in to the vehicle with his team and zoom off.
In a nut shell the result sheets already signed by the Electoral officer / returning officer and ready for declaration is right now under the protection of the people keeping vigils at the venue of the collation. The people are waiting for them to return and do the declaration. Our suspicion is that since they know we won the election they refused to announce it so that they will change the results on reaching Yola now that they were unable to go with the results we don't know the next game plan. SDP ANNOUNCES THE DEATH OF ITS NORTH CENTRAL VICE CHAIRMAN, REV. PETER DZEVER. 3rd March, 2019.
Gentle men of the press, we are deeply saddened to announce the sudden death of our National vice chairman, North Central Zone, Rev Peter Dzever who passed on yesterday evening at his residence in Gboko, Benue state.
Words can not describe how devastated our National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae, CFR, GCON and majority of the SDP National Executive members felt this morning on hearing of the sudden death of Rev Peter who was full of life and charisma through out the National Executive committee meeting of our party which held on Monday, 21st February, 2017 at the National Headquarters, Abuja.
An amiable personality and God fearing politician, Rev Peter who was the immediate past state chairman of the SDP in Benue state would always be remembered by the party for his great contributions towards the laying of the foundation for the currently growing fortunes of our party in Benue state.
Earlier today, Chief Falae, had on behalf of the entire social Democratic Party family "prayed God to admit the soul of the deceased in to his heavenly kingdom while granting the family and the entire people of Benue state the fortitude to bear the great loss".

SDP, Future is Bright and Certain
The Social Democratic Party (SDP), has said that six former governors, four serving senators and two other former senators among other prominent politicians, have indicated interest to join the party “very soon.”
The party also revealed that several other prominent Nigerians from Gombe, Borno, Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue are talking with the SDP leadership. While reading the reports of activities that took place in the last 5 months to the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, yesterday in Abuja, the SDP Deputy National Chairman, Isiaqu Abdulhamned, said the former governors and senators were enthusiastic to join the party ahead of 2019 general elections. According to him, “there are so many good things happening to the party and with this momentum and people approaching us, the future is bright for the party. On the proposed defection, the Deputy National Chairmen said: “Apart from these six governors, the other sets of groups and some prominent individuals with strong political relevance met with our leader yesterday and the meeting will continue today and they are quite enthusiastic to join us.
“ Four serving senators from the North-east only and two former Rep have also been talking to us. we have had four meetings with them and they are very much prepared to work with us. “From Plateau state, high power delegation came here which included a former state chairman of the crisis ridden PDP in the state and a serving House of Representative member were also here and we are talking. “From Gombe state, a popular former House of Representatives member has approached us. He said he has bought one Siena car, 11 bicycles and paid three years office rent in the central area in Gombe state for the party. All he needed is for our national leader to be in Gombe, while he will hand over all these things.”
Also speaking, the SDP National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae, said it took SDP years of experience “to get to where it is today,” adding that the party had not merged with the PDP or any party at as being speculated “because it has lost credibility even though there are still credible members in the Party.” He said: “I am happy that a lot of people are interested in our party. Someone sent a text message to me pleading passionately that the nation was putting its hope on this party and that we should for goodness sake not allow discredited people to sour our image and so on, and I replied and said that you are speaking to the converted.”
On speculated plan to merge with PDP, Chief Falae said, “please, we read in the newspapers that the SDP has merged with one party or it has been absorbed with another party, please just don’t believe it because you don’t have a leadership that can be bought or that can be absorbed. It is because of the credibility they see in us that they want to associate with us and we talking. “When the PDP delegation came to me they said that they were going to confess their political sins that when they were in power they abused the power, first of all within their party they killed the internal democracy, people will chose a candidate but the party will hand pick,  trying to play God and they eventually did themselves very serious arm and did Nigeria a lot of harm as well. Meanwhile SDP's door is wide open for dialogue or negotiations with individuals or patriotic groups desirous of providing alternative government".

You are totally missing the point. It is never a crime in politics for a party without candidate to support another party that has one. That was actually what transpired between PDP and SDP (Jonathan& Olu Falae). However, the 100m given to Olu Falae was disbursed to all the party branches across the nation in order to canvass people in support of the then PDP presidential candidate, Jonathan. Such money from such personality at that time, lets reason, there is no way Olu Falae should be worried of its source. In Politics, this is allowed. The man Olu Falae you cheaply called thief served Nigeria all his lifetime with integrity, even the so call Corruption fight of Buhari that brought about this noise, I think you are getting satisfied where it is leading us to as we speak today. This man, Agunloye from my findings seems to be the best out of them all, not than he does not have his own weak point but you will always prefer him in everything among others. Besides this, he is coming from an unpopular party and he does not have stolen money to bribe people. An independent opinion poll conducted by the Media Monitors for Good Governance in Ondo State has rated the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Olu Agunloye, as the most accepted among the electorate.
The poll rated him highest among 30 contestants representing different political parties.
According to a report made available, yesterday, in Akure, the state capital, by the Abuja-based organisation,
Agunloye scored 40 percent in the opinion poll conducted in 18 local government areas of the state.
The report, signed by the national co-ordinator of the organisation, Mr Olu Folorunsho, and the executive director, Mr Femi Olanrewaju, indicated that people in rural communities of Ondo State supported Agunloye’s ambition to rule the state.
The opinion poll also rated the gubernatorial candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, and that of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Chief Olusola Oke, to be favoured by a small percentage of residents in the state.
While Akeredolu polled 23 percent in the opinion poll, the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from two factions of the party, Messrs Jimoh Ibrahim and Eyitayo Jegede, polled 10 percent and Oke had 25 percent.
The reports read in part: “Our findings revealed that in spite of lack of adequate funding, majority of the people of Ondo State are resolute in voting for Dr Olu Agunloye of the SDP, hence, he is at an high advantage over and above others in the race.”
It added that one major factor working in favour of Agunloye was the support of the Afenifere leaders, including Chief Olu Falae, while the state’s political offices zoning formula also favoured him.

The Governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo state, Dr. Olu Agunloye and his Deputy, Erelu Modupe Martins were given a rousing welcome to the ancient city of Oke Igbo in Oke igbo/ Ile Oluji LG.

Receiving the entourage at Oluoke Palace, High Chief Oladepo Akinbobola prayed that God will help them to fulfil all their electioneering campaign promises.

He used the occasion to appeal to Dr. Agunloye to help the Oke igbo people resolve most of their age long problems such as the filling of the Vacant Royal stool, rehabilitation of the roads which are in deplorable condition, Electricity and portable water.

Chief Akinbobola noted that chiefs are patrician and are ready to welcome whoever comes to them for advise and prayer since all Governorship candidates are their children.

He however assured the SDP governorship candidate and his deputy of their support at all times to win on November 26,2016 by encouraging their people not to sell their votes.

In his response, the Chairman of SDP in Ondo state, Chief Korede Duyile, assured the people that Dr. Agunloye is a tested person who has not soiled his name in public office.

While responding, Dr. Agunloye thanked the people for the rousing welcome which the people gave to him and his entourage.

He promised to keep all his electioneering campaigns as soon as he is sworn in by February 24,2017 by the special grace of God.

He also promised to promote the ancient Igbo Olodumare Tourist to a world standard which will equally invite tourists across the world to boost the economy of the people and that of the state.

He assured that all their requests will remain paramount in his mind when he gets to Office adding that he will never forget those that see him through.

The attention of the Social Democratic Party has been drawn to the false claim made by the Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomohole of Edo State at the venue of All Progressives Congress rally in Benin, Edo state on Tuesday 6th September that our National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae had collected the sum of #300m from the PDP during the 2015 General election when PDP and the SDP entered into electoral alliance.
For avoidance of doubt, this is a malicious and blatant lie. The truth as stated by our national chairman through several interviews and media publications is that the PDP made a contribution of #100m to the SDP Chaired by Chief Olu-Falae in furtherance of an Electoral Agreement between the two parties to rally support for the PDP presidential candidate, Dr Goodluck Jonathan during the election. The above facts, including our responses to the investigating teams from the EFCC have been in the public domain for anyone to access including Governor Oshiomhole.
The SDP therefore finds it difficult to imagine what a sitting Governor of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s status may be trying to achieve by distorting facts and lying against an elder statesman like Chief Olu Falae who has served this country meritoriously in several capacities, including the positions of the Managing Director of Nigerian Merchant Bank, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Finance Minister and left behind a legacy of transparency and hard work. If we may ask, when did participation in partisan politics by refined Nigerian retirees becomes an invitation to the game of character assassination.
However, we are not surprised that Governor Adams in his attempt to discredit our Edo state Governorship candidate Dr Omorevie Gbajumo before the electorate, informed the people of Edo state at the rally that our leader was battling with the EFCC, because we are already aware of an ongoing plot by his party, the APC to keep using government agencies to intimidate, harass and embarrass our party and its National Chairman, particularly before the Ondo state governorship election which the SDP is the most favoured party to win on the account of the integrity and popularity of Chief Falae who is a highly respected Ondo state indigene and Dr Olu Agunloye, the party’s governorship candidate who also has his integrity and track recourd going for him. Hence, making the invitations of our chairman by the EFCC a subject of his campaign is a testimony to the fact that the APC is behind the recent harassment of our National Chairman, who is currently battling to recover from the shock generated by his bitterness towards the shabby and disrespectful treatment he was being subjected in a country which he had served sincerely and meritoriously in the past 50 years, for simple political factor.
To this end we demand an unreserved public apology from Comrade Oshiomole over this show of shame and black mail within 72 hours.

There is palpable fear among the aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People Democratic Party (PDP) over the emergence of the former Minister of power Dr. Olu Agunloye as the flagbear of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ahead of the governorship election in Ondo state.

Agunloye emerged as the SDP candidate at the weekend after other aspirants in the party stepped down for him even before the day of the party primary which held last Saturday in Akure.

It was gathered that the candidature of the former Minister who hails from Akoko axis of the state is already changing the political calculations among the major contending parties due to what sources called initial miscalculations by both the leaders PDP and APC in the state.

A competent source said “Agunloye is believed to be the most popular of all those aspiring for the governorship seat in his senatorial district. Not only that, his rising popularity among the political top notchers in both APC and the PDP is giving the king makers of Tinubu and Mimiko great concerns, as intelligence reports making the rounds has it that some aggrieved APC aspirants and their supporters have vowed to support Agunloye if Tinubu succeeds in imposing his favoured candidate on APC.

“The story is not different in the PDP where Gov Mimiko is said to have pencilled down one of his cronies to pick the ticket.

Another source revealed that the royal relationship of Agunloye as a prince of two prominent cities of Akure and Owo which are home to the highest percentage of the voters in the state is a reason some planners in the other two leading parties fear that Agunloye may not be an easy nut to crack.

“Agunloye is a great grand son of Deji of Akure through his grand mother and grand son of olowo of owo through his mother.

It was also gathered that some APC aspirants were said to have met with the SDP candidate a day before his primary to negotiate their interest to back him, while some PDP Chieftains and aspirants have sent him congratulatory messages.

The source revealed further that “Agunloye’s initial stint in PDP, APC and Labour party is working in his favour as members of both parties see him as part of them some even vowed to risk anti-party accusation to work for him underneath.

“Another factor is the integrity and influence of the national chairman of the SDP in the state. Also to Agunloye’s advantage is the Afenifere factor. The National leader of Afenife, Chief Ruben Fashoranti is a highly respected community and opinion leader in Akure, and he is said to have endorsed Agunloye.”

of the Social Democratic Party, SDP at the Fonts Hall, Ilesha Road, Akure on 20 August 2016

Mr. Chairman, senior members of the Social Democratic Party and Congress Delegates, I wish to thank the party on behalf of my nuclear family and my SDP family for finding me worthy of your trust to carry the Flag of our great party, SDP. I humbly accept the Flag of the Party and the responsibility associated with this and I assure you that I will not let you down and will carry the Flag to victory and install it high at the Government House of Ondo State in February 2017.

Although we must insist on little talking and much action, we cannot collect the prestigious SDP ticket for the governorship bid and just walk away without making a note on the import of this occasion and letting the public know a little about the window being provided by the Social Democratic Party for proactive alternative channel for progress and sustainable development in our State.

Poverty has become a phenomenon that many households have come to accept as normal. This should not be so. Why do we have so much widespread poverty? The answer is clear and obvious. The reality on ground is that our people including you have truly sunken into a deep crisis of economic backwardness caused by repeated mismanagements by our leaders at all levels. However, at this time, exigencies do not permit us to start enumerating the details of the descent into the degraded pit in which we have found ourselves in Ondo State. It will suffice to recall that this ugly situation was recently paraphrased by one civil servant as: “What we want now is food, roads, petrol, light and salaries”. We will not play the blame game or pontificate on how the current degrading situation has emerged. There is simply no time for this because our people are suffering too much and sense of urgency demands that what is needed is to proffer solutions quickly because we have reached the “Sort and Recuse” stage already. For now, we will act as if the government-driven wrongdoings and sufferings associated with them were not initially intended by our past and current leaders. But it has happened and is being manifested daily as open ulcers. As representatives, spokespersons and defenders of the people, the SDP has the responsibilities to redirect the attention and focus of the people to leadership that can salvage the situation. This is why I have been mandated by the party to play a role which will give effective leadership and good governance with sole aim of reversing the woes and misfortunes which have afflicted our people and communities under shamelessly callous leaders.

We are here today to signal completely new path, new ways and new mindset. What you may call a shift from the unrealisable ‘transformation programme’ of the PDP and unreliable ‘Change Agenda’ of APC to a systems approach to citizen empowerment and food security. Our party seeks a new way and better alternative entrenched in integrity of managing people, infrastructure and the economy for citizen empowerment and emancipation. It is a new attitude to serving the people. In specific terms, SDP is fully prepared with a new way to reshape our State for the benefit of all.

All categories of people in Ondo State have provided glaring testimonies that there is a combined tragedy of ineffective leadership and poor governance in the State through the prevalent clamour for restrictive agendas – Akoko Agenda, Owo Agenda, Akure Agenda, Ilaje Agenda, Ikale Agenda, Religious Agenda and even Third Term Agenda. Proponents of these agendas are not to blame; in fact, in some cases, they are able to meticulously articulate their points to support their agendas. But the point here is that these are only open testimonies that we have so far had misconception of governance, lack of economic growth which have started to make sectional leaders and communities to clamour for sectional interests. Personally, I can understand and appreciate anxieties which led to these agendas, except the Third Term Agenda whose only goal is to provide continuity for the same maladministration and mismanagement which led us into economic and social insecurity in the first instance. In spite of my empathies for these agendas, in exception of the obnoxious third term agenda, we have steered away from them and pitched our programme on Peoples Agenda whose objectives are centred on the needs and desires of the common man (Mutu-muwa) and especially for the emancipation of the poor, weak and less privileged (Mekunu). It is a development Agenda for Redemption for people and communities wherever they are.

We have irrevocably pitched our tents with the people of Ondo State. We share their feelings, their frustrations, their challenges and their aspirations; we have travelled with them down the frightening roads of hardship, inadequate health-care, lack of social security and we can say confidently that we fully understand them. We are with them and will always identify with them. This is why becoming their governor has become a “calling” for me. It is a call to lead a platform for patriotic and dedicated men, women and youths on a mission for rescue, recovery and redemption of our dear State.

We know that all the great expectations bestowed on our previous and current leaders have been dashed and the people have been disappointed. We know that it is time for rescue mission. For instance, to assess how ripe it is for rescue mission, we note that we are now in a State where our people are forced by hunger to receive rice and beans in small paper bags as if they are in refugee camps from the same characters who mismanaged their economy and wasted precious resources on trivialities. What we have is simply callous situation wherein our leaders created starvation as a weapon for dominion. Our leaders have perfected the starvation strategy by not paying salaries of workers for work done, or paying pensions due to their parents, uncles and aunties, by not employing their children or younger brothers or sisters and by arbitrary or discriminatory termination of the appointments of vocal ones in the State Civil Service, Local Government Service and Higher Institutions of Learning like Rufus Giwa Polytechnic and Adekunle Ajasin University. These men and women soon become starved enough to queue for one kongo of rice without soup or meat or water to drink. Some of them even come to queue up with their children, their Obas and Chiefs. But we know that, in spite of the hunger, their hearts are yearning to say “pay us our wages, employ us, pay us our pension, empower our women and youths, we shall be able to buy rice, yam to feed ourselves, pay our rents and take care of children…”. Starvation as a weapon is criminal not only in war times but in civil settings. This is why we know it is time for rescue and redemption mission.

It is time to serve you with integrity and trustworthiness. It is time to jettison the omo alaibikita tendencies in Government and replace with omoluabi tendencies. It is time for a three prong rescue mission focusing on (a) Appropriate Debt Management to redeem outstanding salaries, pensions and contractor fees owed even though debts were caused by malfeasance and malfunctions in government administration; (b) a new three-year economic development plan based on near zero Federal subvention or allocations and driven by private sector participation to boost the local economy and virile Service Generating Revenue (SGR) instead of current Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which in some cases is no more than government driven extortions and (c) Discreet Welfare Programmes to combat poverty while keeping corruption at bay focusing especially to protect the vulnerable people – the needy, the very young, the very old and the physically challenged.

Mr. Chairman, we also know that challenges and tasks ahead are huge and expectations are tremendous, but we remain undaunted because we know this is still our Ondo State. The coast line is still 58km, the longest in West Africa; the shoreline is still the deepest in the sub-region; those sands are still in Igbokoda, the talc still in Abusoro, the clays are still there; the palm trees and cocoa are still there; the forests, still there in spite mindless felling, stealing and wanton depletion by marauders propped by same Government that fails to plant new trees; the yam belt, cassava, cashew belts are still there, the granites and solid minerals, the tourist attractions are still there. I could keep counting. The youths are still there and are ready to work, some of them amongst the best trained and most capable in the country. We have fertile and agriculture friendly lands. We have opportunities for viable marine economy in Ilaje - Ese-Odo Federal Constituency good enough to generate export. We have two brand new but nonfunctioning electricity power generating plants in Okitipupa LG which can support viable industrial economic zone capable of Growth Pole Economy and large scale industrialisation. Above all, we have the civil service once adjudged one of the best in the sub-region, now battered and waiting to be revived and re-empowered into great shape to drive reforms and advancements in public service administration leveraging on our own brand new but nonfunctioning Public Service Training Institute in Ilara Mokin which is potentially the best in West Africa.

So we can see that the Sun is still shining in Ondo State. It has never stopped. It is only a matter of ensuring that its potentials are properly harnessed and distributed equitably to make our State and her people great. I make bold to say that all we need is to have a governor who is competent, credible and compassionate. A governor with Integrity and who can be trusted. A governor who is not a ruler or Maradonian manipulator. We need a Governor as a servant-leader who is responsible to God and accountable to the people of Ondo State and not an AJELE (a dejure Governor) who is responsible to godfathers outside or within Ondo State. This is why I humbly and respectfully offer myself to serve as the Governor and servant-leader of our dear Ondo State.

As it is often said: Politicians think of the next election, but statesmen think of the next generation. In truth and in every matter in particular, I am indeed a better statesman than a politician. As a Statesman, I offer myself for service, I offer my expertise and experience as administrator in managing people, plans, policies and programmes in public service for over 36 years without blemish as University Lecturer, Chief Executive of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC; Special Assistant to Honourable Minster of Power and Steel; Special Assistant to Honourable Attorney General of the Federation; two-time Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chief Executive officer of National eGovernment Strategies.

People of Ondo State, I am ready to work with you and to serve you to rebuild and reposition our State. I am ready for the great tasks ahead. I am ready to treat you with honour and respect so that together we can reengage youths and workforce, cater for all old and young and set us all free from bondage. I therefore call on you good people of Ondo State wherever you are as well as non-indigene residents in Ondo State, wherever you may have come from and all stakeholders irrespective of your political partisanship to come and partner with me so that we can together reconcile, rebuild, reinvigorate and reposition our beloved State to ensure a brighter future for next generation. Come. Together we can do it.

BROAD DAY ROBBERY OF THE ELECTORAL MANDATE OF SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY (SDP) IN LAMURDE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ADAMAWA STATE
 
Gentlemen of the press, it is with heavy heart that I issue the following statement exposing the fatal blows heaped on our hard earned democracy last week in ADAMAWA STATE.
The Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) had on Saturday 6th August 2016 conducted election into the office of Chairman of Lamurde Local Government Council of Adamawa State, the local Government of the SDP member and the minority leader in the state house of assembly, Hon Justina Obadaya. Our party fortunately won the election with our candidate, Mr Simon Tompeyo polling 11, 138 votes ahead of the APC candidate who polled 10,740 votes. The Returning Officer, Mr Anuhu Emmanuel Abba duly announced results and returned our candidate elected, with result sheet signed, stamped and issued, with all the proceedings capture in a video at our possession.
 
2.       However, in a sudden twist, the Electoral Commission in league with the State Government conspired to arms-twist the electorate and rob our party and candidate of his hard won victory with the Commission refusing to issue certificate of return to our candidate and proceeded to swear-in the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate who came second in the election. Similarly, the election in Numan local Government was declared inconclusive because the two wards at stake are the major support base of the SDP in the local government.
 
3. The action of the Adamawa State Government and Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission is too pedestrian, brutish, draconian and amounts not only to a rape on our democracy, but corruption of the highest order. It is even the more, most ridiculous that it is happening at a time that the Federal Government is pushing a crusade of change and fight against corruption, which understandably involves respect and adherence to the rule of law.
 
4.    The question begging for an answer, is whether the Electoral Commission
is seised of any power to reverse a declaration lawfully made by the Returning Officer. Is it not the ideal thing for any party aggrieved with the declaration to approach the appropriate Election Petition Tribunal to seek redress? To foist a loser of an election on the citizenry is most wicked and runs counter to the cherished principles of democracy. Reports have it that the people of the local Government emmass have since barricaded the road leading to the council secretariat in demand for the candidate which the elected, despite the continuous appeal from the SDP leaders from the local government and the state.
 
5.       It is pertinent to say that ADSIEC ought to be and is an independent Commission funded by the public revenue and has a bounden duty to discharge its functions without bias, affection or ill will. Therefore, it is undemocratic and against reason and good conscience for the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission to discharge her function without partiality.
 
6.       The rule of law entails equal treatment for all citizens. SDP deserves their victory and nothing less can be acceptable. Our victory is as a result of hard work and to a great degree demonstrates the popularity and superiority of SDP over other political parties in Lamurde Local Government Area if not in the entire Adamawa state. This must be respected.
 
7.       This senseless act of the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission and the Adamawa State Government is breeding political tension in Lamurde Local Government Area. It will be most unfortunate if lives are lost on account thereof as the situation is likely to degenerate.
 
8.       This is calling on President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leadership of the APC to intervene to save the growing sanctity of our electoral process as instituted by the PDP administration of the former president Good luck Jonathan and which brought in the present APC from desecration. It is despicable that the government could be so desperate in the manner exhibited by the Adamawa State Government to commit illegality and damn the consequences. It didn’t matter to the government and the Electoral Commission that the consequences could be catastrophic.
 
9. While it is our earnest hope that Mr. President and the APC leadership will act swiftly in calling the Adamawa state Government to order and redress the ugly situation, we call on you the Media, the Human Rights and pro- democracy organizations as the conscience of the Nation and leading stakeholders in our current democracy to join us in fighting the grave injustice being visited on our party, SDP and the candidate.
Finally, we intend to proceed to the election petition tribunal to seek redress and any legal support from any pro-democracy quarter shall be highly welcomed.

Five Reasons Buhari Is Failing

In the 2015 elections, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari convinced Nigerians to do something that had never been done before – turn power over to the opposition party at the national level. In return, Nigerians expect him and his party, the APC, to do something that is hard to do – successfully steer Nigeria through turbulent economic and political waters.

The Nigerian people have held up their side of the bargain, by sweeping Mr. Buhari to the presidency and delivering the Senate, House of Representatives and the Governorship of a plurality of states to the APC. In doing so, Nigerians provided Mr. Buhari with every tool that a President needs to succeed.

Over one year later, the promise of change has become a premise of doom. Nigeria is ravaged by an economy in recession, heightening insecurity, epileptic power supply and a host of other ills.

Here are five major factors that have contributed to the Buhari government’s failings in steering the Nigerian ship of state.

Issue 1: No sense of urgency

Mr. Buhari is slow and steady. However, while a slow and steady hand might be needed for a pediatrician that delivers babies, fast and firm hands are required for a surgeon that is working in the emergency wing of a hospital. Nigeria is in the emergency wing. Patient Nigeria’s condition cannot be managed with aspirin. The nation needs to be wheeled immediately into the operating theater and worked on, fervently, and with a sense of utmost urgency.

Mr. Buhari does not seem to have the same view of the condition of patient Nigeria that the rest of the country has. Six months into his administration, Buhari was yet to name his government. When the names emerged, it was one that he could have come up with on day one. No one knows how hard Mr.Buhari tried to find capable Nigerians to join him in steering the ship of state. Yet somehow, of the 170 million Nigerians that are alive, some of whom are doing big things in Nigeria and beyond, it was the present batch of overused, recycled names and faces that Mr. Buhari brought forward.

No one knows how Mr. Buhari made his selection. No one knows why it took him six months to select a weak bench. However, this is how the world’s best nations and companies do it: they commission experts to do the job. The experts would be given a brief, told the types of men and women that the government is seeking, and asked to roam the world in search of talent. Nigeria does this all the time when we are seeking for soccer talent to put in the National teams.

Mr. Buhari’s lack of urgency extends beyond how he selected his cabinet. For the last two years, Fulani herdsmen and farming communities have engaged in what can only be called ethnicwarfare – that has razed villages to the ground and killed thousands of people. Yet nothing has been done to stop the killings. The power sector is comatose, yet no workable, practical plan has been put forward for addressing the issues. Militancy is on the rise in the Niger Delta, yet no coherent plan for winning the war or policing the peace has been proposed.

And for a nation that is trying to encourage foreign direct investment, it should not take over one year to appoint ambassadors.

Issue 2: Hiring for loyalty

Mr. Buhari values loyalty above all things. It is easy to understand why this is the case. Mr. Buhari was aided to power in 1983 by his friends. By 1985, the same friends had toppled him. Mr. Buhari seems to have decided that he prefers brothers to friends. In speeches and comments that he has made since becoming President, Mr. Buhari has used the loyalty argument to explain away his most baffling appointments.

A President that is committed to success, must act in the interest of the nation. They must be willing and open to making themselves vulnerable, if that is the price of progress. Without overcoming this inner battle that drives them towards loyalty above all else, they will be doomed to embracing the familiar but frail grip of mediocrity rather than the uncertain but ultimately successful grasp of progress.

Issue 3: Policy Vacuum

At the beginning of his administration, Mr. Buhari told Nigerians the many things he thought was wrong with the country. He bemoaned the fact that Nigerians imported things as basic as toothpick. He talked about how frustrated he was that the judicial system was hampering his anti-corruption war.

Almost one year later, nothing has changed. Mr. Buhari, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and leader of the party that controls the Senate and the House of Representatives is still lamenting.

Not a single coherent and consistent policy framework that is aimed at correcting many of the ills that Buhari has complained about have been put in place. Nothing has been done to make it easier for Nigerian businessmen to manufacture toothpick in Nigeria than for them to import it. There are no trains and inland water networks that will help them transport the wood that they need from the forests to the cities where their production sites and customers are. There are no plans for providing them with the energy they need to cut the wood, shave and package it.There are no policies that provide investors with access to capital at interest rates that encourage local production. There are no environmental policies that will regulate how trees are cut down and ensure that deforestation does not result, once we start making our own toothpick.

It does not matter what sector one looks at, the issues are exactly the same – the Buhari government is doing nothing of substance to enable Nigeria’s growth. Till date, the Petroleum Industry Bill, which experts all agree is key to unlocking the immense potential of Nigeria’s downstream oil sector has continued to languish.

Issue 4: A Half Hearted Anti – Corruption War

Mr. Buhari rode to power on the back of the Horse called Anticorruption. Over one year later, Nigerians are still watching the horse show. Not a single conviction has been secured in any of the major corruption cases. Despite over one year of high drama, corruption has not been banished in the country that is led by a man elected on the platform of eradicating corruption.

Buhari has complained about the judicial system that drags out cases, and a judiciary that appears complicit in corruption. Yet, he has not sent a single bill to the national assembly to modify Nigeria’s laws so that the walls of protection that the current laws offer to the corrupt can be brought down. And for those who would argue that the National Assembly would never pass such bills – here is what the Nigerian people say: let the President at least try and then he will see how a nation will rise to defend a President that is carrying out the will of the people.

In poll after poll, Nigerians have demonstrated that they will support the President if he as to ask for speedier trials and stiffer penalties.

Corruption comes dressed as many things. In its most familiar garb, it is the pilfering of public funds. But corruption is also providing employment to ones cronies and family members without due process. While the political expediency of ignoring corruption within one’s own party can be understood, it should not be tolerated. Corruption is an infectious disease. It cannot be managed. It needs to be eradicated.

So far, Mr. Buhari has not lived up to the lofty expectations Nigerians had. As time passes, Mr. Buhari’s anti-corruption war increasingly seems to be little more than a handy distraction for an increasingly critical populace

Issue 5: Economy – Firefighting Approach, No Strategy

When the history of Mr. Buhari’s term in office will be written, Nigerians will not remember how many people were locked up for corruption. They will not remember how many Boko Haram insurgents were taken off the battle field. They will not remember how many pipelines were blown up by militants. They will only remember whether it was a period of prosperity or a period of lack. So far, Buhari’s term has been a period of abject lack and debilitating poverty.

For those who say Mr. Buhari inherited a mess that needs time to be cleaned up, here is a simple response: it was a mess he fought hard to inherit. Mr. Buhari was not running for president in Egypt. From 2003 till 2015 – 12 long years, Mr. Buhari fought for the opportunity to lead Nigeria. He knew that Nigeria was not saving for a rainy day. He knew that oil prices were dropping precipitously. He knew that the national assembly was expert at padding budgets. He knew that politicians and civil servants were pilfering public funds. He talked about all these problems incessantly when he was running for office.

Anyone looking to see how courageous leaders respond when they inherit a mess should look to Barack Obama. In 2008, he was handed the worst recession that America had seen in over 40 years. His response was epic. He rolled out the largest stimulus program ever implemented by a nation, and hired the best minds in the country. He also threw petty loyalties aside and invited former rivals like Hilary Clinton into his cabinet. Seven years later, 15 million jobs have been gained, and the USA is perhaps the best performing developed economy in the world.

Despite knowing Nigeria’s dire condition, Mr. Buhari did not seem prepared for the challenge of running a nation that was overly reliant on a single commodity for its sustenance. One year later, nothing seems to have changed. While the Buhari government’s fiscal policy is supposedly geared towards encouraging investment, the monetary policy put out by the central bank is geared towards mopping up liquidity. Raising interest rates is a way to reduce inflation if the reason for rising prices is an excess of cash in the system. In Nigeria’s case, inflation was caused by the weakening of the Naira, not excess liquidity.

There must be better coordination in his government. Fiscal and monetary policy must be aligned. However, there can be no coordination until the strategic aims of the government becomes clear to all. What exactly is the goal of the Buhari government? Is the goal to increase employment or to curb inflation? Is the goal to encourage local production, or encourage foreign direct investment? Or is it to do all of the above? What sectors are being targeted for growth?

The sad truth is this – no one in Buhari’s government can articulate what the strategic aims are. And if they can, they are certainly not sharing that information with Nigerians.

Conclusion

Mr. Buhari can still succeed. However, to right this sinking ship, he must do some things that he has not shown himself capable of doing in the last year – recognize the fierce urgency of the moment, overcome his innermost fears, and do right by the Nigerian people. Nigerians still believe in change. In the balance of his term, President Buhari must show himself worthy of the trust of the Nigerian people by giving them a government worthy of their expectations.

ADAMAWA STATE LG ELECTIONS: SDP FLOORS APC, PDP.
Reports from Adamawa state has it that the Nigerian 'party of tomorrow', Social Democratic Party, SDP has won Lamurde local Government council, during the local government elections held today in Adamawa state.
According to the state chairman of the party, Mr Ibrahim Bebetu, a copy of the result sheet issued at the local government collation centre to the SDP returning officer indicates that the SDP candidate, Mr Simon Tompeyo, scored a total number of 11,138 to defeat his closest rival, Mr Vrati Nzozo of the APC who scored 10,740 votes, while MrJeremonth Lebo, the candidate of the 'yesterday party' PDP scored 2,140 votes.
The report further stated that SDP was running neck to neck with the APC when the electoral officials decided to declared the election inconclusive without any cogent reason.
In the light of above, SDP enjoins the Adamawa state Independent electoral commission and the state government to be Civil, Democratic and God fearing in the handling of the outcome of the elections, particularly the one of Nunman where SDP is favoured to coast in a landslide victory.
It may recalled that SDP Member in the Adamawa state house of Assembly, Hon Justina is the minority leader of the house.

GENTLEMEN OF THE PRESS

On a number of occasions in the last six months, we of the National Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have, on behalf of our party addressed the public in respect of a sum of N100 million made available to our party through our National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae by the PDP through the then Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Party, Chief Tony Anenih for the purpose of implementing the inter-party electoral agreement entered into by the two parties.

We are again constrained to address the public, through you, gentlemen of the press, on the same matter, because of the recent invitation to our National Chairman by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which he has duly honoured. See the interview of our National Chairman as contained in the following newspapers: The Guardian, Vanguard, Tribune, Punch and The Telegraph all of Sunday January 24th 2016. Those publications and this press release establish the following facts:

1. Contrary to what the public is being made to believe, it was NOT Chief Olu Falae but the SDP which had a working agreement with the PDP during the last Presidential Election of 2015. Such an agreement is normal in a democracy.
2. That Chief Olu Falae, in his capacity as the National Chairman of our party did summon the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of our party and informed us that Chief Tony Anenih, in his capacity as the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT) of the PDP had visited him in his house at Akure to request for a working electoral arrangement with the SDP towards the 2015 Presidential election. Chief Falae further informed us that he gave Chief Anenih six conditions which the PDP must fulfill before he could present their request to the (SDP) for consideration. The oral discussion was followed by a letter from Chief Falae asking Chief Anenih and PDP to confirm acceptance of the six conditions in writing. The six conditions are as follows:
(i) The restructuring of the Nigerian Polity by faithfully implementing the Report of the National Conference, 2014.
(ii) Adoption of a policy of zero tolerance for corruption.
(iii) Intensification of efforts, Military and otherwise, to defeat insurgency in the North East and establish effective security throughout the Nation.
(iv) Training and financial empowerment of unemployment over the next four years
(v) Significant reduction in recurrent expenditure so as to generate substantial funds for capital development.
(vi) A fair participation of the SDP in the Government that will emerge after the elections.

The response of the PDP signed by the chairman of the PDP BOT Chief Anenih accepting all the six conditions of the SDP is set out below:

Dear Olu,

RE: INTER-PARTY CO-OPERATION
I write sincerely to thank you for your letter dated January 23, 2015, on the above subject matter.

After due consultations with relevant stakeholders of our party, I am pleased to convey to you our decisions on the issues and to further inform you that the President and the leadership of our party have expressed delight and strong optimism to fully cooperate and work with the SDP in the circumstance.

1. IMPLREMENTATION OF THE REPORT OF THE 2014 NATIONAL CONFERENCE
Please be assured that the report of the National Conference will be implemented to the letter. We believe that having regards to the fact that the National Conference was a baby of the President, he is in a better position to implement it. And this is what he is doing.

2. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CORRUPTION
This is no doubt that our party, the PDP and your party, the PDP are on the same page on this issue. Apart from the fact that this administration has done more arrest, investigations, prosecutions and convictions of corrupt cases, the President has continuously lay emphasis on the need to develop an appropriate technology to comprehensively combat corruption and its vices. This approach for example, has produced immense results in eliminating corruption that was associated with the distribution of fertilizers in Nigeria in the past.

3. INSURGENCY
It is the primary duty of Government to protect the lives and property as its citizens and secure the territorial integrity of the nation. This government has consistently made efforts to deal with the challenges of Boko Haram who have established their operational base somewhere between some States in the North-East of the country and the boundary with some of our neighboring African countries. Terrorism has become a global phenomenon and fighting it requires the co-operation of not just the entire citizens but the support of the Internal Community. The President is working on this. In his recent visit to Bornu and in a rally at Maiduguri few day ago, he assured the people that every inch of Nigerian soil currently under the control of insurgents will be recovered in no distant time.

4. COMBATING UNEMPLOYMENT
This is certainly a primary focus of this Administration considering the various programs designed and implemented since 2011. Programs such as SURE-P, YouWin, Agricultural and Industrial transformation, including the railways that have generated massive employment opportunities for Nigerians. The President intends to sustain the tempo and improve on existing records.

5. REDUCTION IN RECURRENT EXPENDITURE AND INCREASE IN CAPITAL EXPENDITURE
This is an area that the President is not only ready to give a critical look at but he is also prepared to welcome new ideas and positive contributions from leaders of the SDP.

6. PARTICIPATION OF SDP IN THE PDP GOVERNMENT
Please be assured that the SDP will be considered as worthy participant in the Government and will be adequately consulted in this regards.

Once again, I want to sincerely thank you for creating a platform for continued interaction and cooperation between our parties for the good and promotion of the corporate existence of Nigeria.

It was upon the acceptance of the SDP conditions and subsequent endorsement of the PDP presidential candidate, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan that Chief Anenih made a call to our National Chairman expressing appreciation of the PDP leadership and promising that his party would send some financial support to our party, the SDP to enable us mobilize support for their candidate and execute campaign activities.

The money promise by the PDP was not received for about two months and was only received on 25/3/15, three days to the Presidential election. It is important to note that following the delay in the arrival of the money, the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the SDP mandated Chief Olu Falae to raise and advance to the party some funds pending the receipt of the financial support promised by the PDP.

Subsequently the National Chairman transferred N30.5milion to the party’s Headquarters Account on 3/2/15 and arranged lodgements of N70million on the same account on 6/2/15, making a total of N100.5million.

On receipt of the PDP contribution on March 25 2015, the Central Working Committee further requested that the National Chairman should further transfer a sum of N66.150million to the account of the national secretariat of the party for disbursement to various state chapters of the SDP for prosecuting the elections. A disbursement committee was setup to effect the disbursement according to identified needs of the states.

The Central Working Committee further decided that an amount of about N12.1million should be transferred to some leaders, stakeholders and candidates for election purposes while a sum of N21.7million was made as a token refund to the National Chairman out of N100.5million he had advanced to the party. About N78.1milion is therefore still outstanding out of the funds arranged and advanced by the National Chairman. From the foregoing it is clear that it was the SDP as a party that utilized the money provided by the PDP for legitimate election purposes.

The above explanations and clarifications have been made available to the public and relevant authorities effectively. All the financial figures presented here can be verified from the bank account of the National Headquarters of the party, SDP.

Regrettably, political enemies of our party have continued to plant distorted, malicious and misleading stories in the media in order to tarnish the name of the National Chairman and our party. This is despicable and it is condemnable for politicians to use government organs and agencies to intimidate and blackmail opponents. It is highly regrettable that some desperate and morally bankrupt politicians are boasting that the National Chairman of the SDP, Chief Olu Falae would be picked up and detained before the November 23 2016 when Governorship elections will be held in Ondo, his home state.

We wish to call on President Mohammadu Buhari, himself a man of high integrity like our National Chairman, to call all those concerned to order, so as not to allow an innocent man who had served the country in very high positions with integrity, distinction and patriotism for over 50 years, to be maligned and embarrassed for purely partisan political reasons.

In needs to be emphasized here that the type of inter-party agreement that led to the contribution of N100million to the SDP by the PDP is normal and legitimate. Funding such an arrangement is therefore neither illegal nor immoral. It is worthy of note that in the year 2007, Chief Olu Falae was the National Chairman of Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA). In that year’s general election, while other parties in the country did not support General Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the DPA under the leadership of Chief Falae adopted Genera Buhari as its Presidential candidate since the DPA had no presidential candidate of its own. It is on record that the DPA made financial contributions of about N20million to Buhari’s campaign in the South West which was championed and led by Chief Olu Falae. If that did not constitute a crime or offence to warrant investigations then, inter-party electoral cooperation in 2015 can neither be novel nor constitute a crime.

With regard to the allegation that the money given by the PDP (through Chief Tony Anenih) to the SDP (through Chief Olu Falae) was part of the public fund said to be stolen by Dasuki, the then National Security Adviser (NSA), we wish to state unequivocally that both our National Chairman (Chief Olu Falae) and our party (SDP) did not directly or indirectly participate in the sharing of the said fund or any other public fund whatsoever. We affirm most categorically that we have had no transaction, dealing, connection or any contract whatsoever with any government agency or official regarding any financial matter. We challenge any person, authority or any other government agency to disprove this fact.

The account into which Tony Anenih authorized the transfer of the funds is the same account which Chief Olu Falae had used for about 20 years for such political financial transactions including the 1999 Presidential election. It is also worthy of note that it was from this account that payments were made to the National Headquarters of the SDP and the accounts of some leaders of the party for electoral purposes.

Asking participants to refund such funds in whole or in part is unfair and contrary to natural justice especially as value was exchanged when the SDP performed the service requested by the PDP – the endorsement and political support for its Presidential candidate.

Well, in the case of Baba Falae, to me I don't see any issue in a party without presidential candidate to give her solidarity to any chosen candi
date just as they supported PDP during the last election. If PDP decides to mobilize them with cash, it was not wrong and there is no way Falae can trace such money to Dasukigate. After all, many people contributed funds to President Buhari campaign including notable questionable personalities. I didn't hear that he reject such fund. However, saying that he divided the money between himself and the party maybe not be the business of EFCC as well. Lets be frank here.
