The problem of evil is so wide, so encompassing, and so
gargantuan that it has engaged the thoughts of scholars,
researchers, theologians, and ordinary men and women in
all cultures and in all regions throughout the ages.
And this problem has continued to grow and has grown so
big, so thick that one can actually touch it. Any time and
anywhere you find evil or an evil deed, you are always
bound to ask ‘why should such and such happen?’
Throughout the landscape of history you are faced with
hundreds of thousands, nay, millions of experiences of
unexplainable acts of man’s inhumanity to man. One is
compelled to wonder how any human being could ever
have conceived the idea of inflicting such horrendous act
of cruelty and wickedness on a fellow human being.
We know what, but why should any one pick up an axe and
smash the head of a wife or husband until the skull
empties its contents in a pool of blood? The what is usually
tied to money, fear of losing a spouse through imminent
divorce, property or pursuit of power and position. But
why perpetrate such great evil of taking another person’s
life in cold blood; a life that once it is taken cannot be
replaced?
Look at transcontinental slave trade. Innocent fellow
human beings were uprooted from their ancestral homes
as FREE men and women and were immediately thereafter
transformed into slaves with subsequent suffering, horror,
trauma, indignity, deprivation, humiliation, rape and
senseless murder. To imagine that such unprecedented act
of evil could be allowed to last a span of 400, repeat 400
years without the evil perpetrators blinking an eye speaks
volumes for the depravity of the beasts in human skin that
made it happen.
Just close your eyes, and imagine with your mind’s eye the
picture of a man piercing the lips of another man and
putting a load of heavy padlock to lock up the victim’s
mouth so that the slave victim could not communicate
with his fellow slave victim, in some cases, his brother or
his equally enslaved children or his wife before enforced
slavery. Just imagine! Imagine a slave woman being
serially and regularly raped in the presence of her
husband by some smelly pink skinned perverts.
To imagine that perpetrators of this horrific acts of evil
carried the Bible in their hands and quoted scriptures
[written of course by the same evil purveyors]to justify
their fiendish acts is to begin to wonder how far evil men
and women can go to justify acts of inhumanity.
Less than 10 years after the symbolic abolition of physical
slavery economic slavery, which is worse than physical
slavery and mental slavery, the enslavement of the mind
took root. And that three-legged evil continues unabated
till the present moment. In fact the triplet is waxing
stronger by the day.
Again, less than 50 years after the so-called abolition of
physical slavery, a big evil perpetrator woke up on the
wrong side of his bed and convinced himself that Jews
were less than human and the entire race should be wiped
off the surface of Europe. Innocent men and women
stripped raw naked were heralded like sheep into the gas
chamber to be roasted alive and burnt to ashes. How
could anybody’s mind conceive of such horror? Evil.
We can go on and on to itemise acts of evil that have
beclouded the world. Palestinians have been living a life of
living dead in the last 65 years with some of them
permanently domiciled in refugee camps under the flimsy
excuse that some one was born of a slave mother and
another child was born by a legitimate wife. Arrant
nonsense, when the historical fact is that Ibraheem/
Abraham/Braimoh/ Brimo was born in Ur in present day
Iraq, which without a doubt means the Arab-Patriarch of
the Jews was a full blooded Arab.
But this piece is NOT about slave trade, the holocaust, the
murder of 27 million Congolese by King Leopold or the
plundering of wealth of India, Africa and the Middle East
or the rabid enslavement of the African mind through
some ill-digested archaic dogmas. These are just some of
the examples of the depravity bred by evil.
The big question is why is there so much evil in this world?
It is a theological question as well as a psychological
question. It is a philosophical question as well as a
political question. It is a chemical question, the chemistry
of the human brain as well as psychiatric question.
Researchers must pay as much attention as they pay to
Cancer Research as they should pay to Evil Research.
There is so much suffering in the world. There is so much
brazen injustice. There is ugly and horrifying wickedness.
I am not concerned about some bogus pedestrian and
utterly irrational and unscientific argument that some child
born to Ben Panthera some two thousand years ago died
for the sins [acts of evil]that may still be perpetrated 2000
years hence and that once you confess after killing your
father and raping your mother, you are automatically for­
given and shall go upstairs in the clouds and eat eba and
ogbono with some one in a funny utopia called Al-janna or
Paradise! This kind of dogma can only fuel acts of evil. Kill,
confess, repent, heaven! Sleep with your daughters.
Confess, repent, heaven. Empty the nation’s treasury,
confess, repent, heaven!
The sad corollary, contradiction and the glaring deceit in
this unimaginative dogma is that the people who brought
this dogma to Africa are the most unforgiving of human
race. And they exert the stiffest penalty including long term
imprisonment and even death penalty on offenders.
I repeat that we must all find solution to the question of
evil. I am aware that the classic novel Lord of the Flies
tends to suggest that evil is inherent in every human being,
but also adds that the elements and environment can also
be good breeding ground for evil. This is to therefore
suggest that as much as evil could be embedded in human
nature, it also lends itself to causative efects.
Enslaved African minds that have been so permanently
shut to reasoning are quick to suggest that holding on to
God or prayers will be the solution and end to evil when
empirical evidence on ground suggests the contrary.
Burning people alive in propagation of religion, or starving
flocks to death, while their pastors, imams and rabbis are
feeding fat and emitting loud bang of fart and burying their
heads in clouds of jet planes, is a loud affirmation of the
worst evil.
This writer does not have all the answers to the
problematic question of evil, but the world should draw its
attention to it and device ways and means of minimising it.
Massive poverty, massive corruption, massive
unemployment, the crass inequality in the distribution of
world resources are all by-products of evil, the abuse of
power, position and privilege by one man over the other.
Religion, whatever it means cannot and will not end evil
and evil doing because almost all religious dogmas and
literatures justify the exploitation of one man by another
and the ascendancy master-servant relationship in human
affairs.
We have to look in other direction if mankind is to deal a
decisive blow on evil or look on until evil consumes the
earth.

No fewer than 15 persons were killed yesterday in Oji-
River Local Government Area of Enugu State when a trailer
laden with cement lost control and crashed into a market
located along the old Enugu/ Onitsha Road.
An eye witness told Sunday Sun that the trailer was
descending a hill when the driver lost control.
The trailer consequently found its way into the market
known as Wonderful Market Oji River, crushing the victims
and destroying property including vehicles in the process.
Chairman of the market, Chief Augustine Mba, it was
gathered, lost one of his sons who was said to be an
undergraduate of the Enugu State University of Science
and Technology, in the accident.
A trader identified simply as Ikechukwu who dealt in
building materials was among the victims of the accident.
A Toyota Sienna spacewagon was crushed by the trailer
and its occupants killed. Their identities are yet to be
established.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police
Command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the accident.
He disclosed that the command had so far evacuated 15
dead bodies, adding that the mishap occurred when the
driver of a truck lost control of the vehicle.
Amaraizu added that the truck ran into a Toyota Sienna
spacewagon that was conveying people to different
destinations.
He said the driver of the truck had been arrested, adding
that the command had commenced investigation into the
tragic incident.
“No fewer than I5 corpses were recovered while driver and
conductor of the truck have been arrested,” he stated.

You should not expect to be happy every day of your life.
You should actually not expect to be happy all the time. It
is both foolish and idealistic to expect that you would not
have sad days. People should brace up for the fact of life
that most times they will be unhappy, or to put it mildly,
they will be dissatisfied with many things happening to
them or happening around them. And this is not talking
about the cliché ‘life is not a bed of roses’.
This piece is not about bed or about roses. It is not about
the reality that one faces in life of obstacles. Obstacles
may not necessarily make you unhappy. Difficulties in life
may not necessarily make you unhappy. One is more likely
to be made unhappy by events rather than situation in life.
That you find it difficult to pay your school fees may not
make you unhappy the way failing an examination you
believed you worked hard for would.
Every day of our lives we stumble on events that inflict
pain and sadness on us. Most of such events may not be
our own making. But they happen nonetheless and make
us very unhappy and sorrowful.
Happiness is one of Nature’s most priceless psychological
gifts. It is so great that it cannot be purchased. No amount
of money can buy happiness. A row of houses in Abuja or
Lagos or Dubai, plus the world’s most exotic cars cannot
give you happiness. Yes you can have joy or joyful
moment at the sight of your first baby delivered in the
hospital. You may also have joy if after 15 years of anxious
expectations you are blessed with the fruit of the womb.
Happiness will only come if the child turns out to be a
brilliant, hardworking, serious minded and drug free man
or woman that has passed through adolescence and has
continued to give you joy along the way.
Happiness is a state of mind. It is not a fleeting feeling.
And however much a man may try to make himself happy
by acquiring gadgets and going on cruise to most
sophisticated islands, he may not find happiness. He may
still visit these places and carry his exotic gadgets and still
find happiness out of his reach. The rich also cries.
What all this boils down to is that you cannot manufacture
happiness.
And as I have often argued in the case of prayer, not every
prayer is answered. It is not every wish that is fulfilled. If
all prayers were answered there would be no single
destitute on the surface of the earth. If all prayers were
answered there would be no barrenness. There would be
no poverty and there would be no failures. The world
would simply be a Utopia. But certainly not all prayers are
answered.
It is in this light that no one should expect to be happy all
the time. Nobody should expect to be happy every day. If
one cultivates that attitude that happiness is not theirs like
a daily meal, there would be sanity. There would be less
dependency on fortunes and luck. Expectations which can
occasionally drive people mad would be minimal. If you
limit your expectations, your disappointments will be lim­
ited.
Are Nigerians happy? Some experts did say that Nigerians
are the happiest people on the globe. They may have been
correct based on the finding that with the myriads of
problems, deprivations and disappointments to which
most Nigerians are subjected, the Nigerian animals still
party and feel generally jocund and merry. This may
perhaps be due in part to the realisation by an average
Nigerian that there is nothing to expect from their self-
imposed rulers. Having expected so much over the years
and having got nothing to show for their expectations,
Nigerians have learnt to conquer sadness and sorrow.
Their sensibilities and sensitivities have grown numb.
Hence rather than feel unhappy and frustrated, they have
learnt to cope beautifully with their sorry plight.
It must be said though that in personal issues, happiness
is the most preferred determinant of relationships and
their workability and sustainability. In marriage for
instance, the staying elixir is happiness. Whatever one gets
from marriage or a relationship, if one is not happy, the
relationship will collapse.
It is little wonder that most times when you find a couple
that you consider odd, you wonder what on earth could
have joined the duo together. The truth of course is that
the two parties find happiness in their union. A piece of
happiness that may not be recognisable by a casual
observer may be the strong link biding the seemingly odd
couple together.
And I do counsel that if a man or woman is not happy in a
relationship he or she should call it quits. Happiness is so
germane to healthy living. In fact nothing kills faster than
unhappiness. It simply does not make sense that a man
should remain in a relationship where his three meals
each day are heavy doses of unhappiness. And this applies
to a woman too.
If a woman is perpetually unhappy with her spouse, her
best option is to quit. But this statement does not
contradict the opening thought that one should not expect
to be happy every day. By saying that one should not
expect happiness every day, it does not follow that one
should endure unhappiness in a relationship in perpetuity.
That one should not expect happiness every day is to arm
one with the reality of life that you simply do not find
happiness every day, and because you do not find
happiness every day should not drive you to suicide. This
does not however imply that you sentence yourself to a
life of sorrow in a marriage that does not guarantee you a
day of peace and quiet.
The first thought of not expecting happiness every day is to
admonish against a Utopia expectation, and that applies
generally. And to also say that one should not go through a
life of perennial sadness is to admonish against going into
a relationship where you know, with your eyes open that
you can never find happiness. Marrying beneath one’s so­
cial class, marrying a pathological bully or pathological
liar, or marrying a serial gambler and heavy drinker or
marrying some one with strange and weird world views
that are diametrically opposed to yours are all sure indices
of a doomed relationship. And any one who desires
happiness in his or her private life must watch out for
these undesirables.
By and large, one should balance life and living in a
general setting, and the expectations that go with societal
norms with life and living in a private setting like husband
and wife.
In all, one should constantly remind himself or herself that
there is no permanent state of happiness even though
happiness is the ultimate goal. And on no account and
under no circumstance should any one allow an outsider
to decide one’s happiness. As I said in one of my created
quotes, ‘do not submit your happiness to the whims and
caprices of others’. If you like what you wear, and subject
to decorum and decency, let nobody dictate to you what
your fashion sense should be.
If you are happy with yourself, and you do not constitute a
nuisance to others, so be it.
Always be yourself, be true to your self, and expect less
from the world. Therein lays your happiness.

Gunmen have abducted a journalist, Mr. Ugochukwu
Ugorji-Eke, the Umuahia correspondent of The Nation
Newspapers.
The incident occurred at about 7:30p.m. on Sunday while
the journalist was returning to his house in his car.
It was gathered that Mr. Eke had earlier in the day gone to
visit some family members, but as he was returning home,
unknown to him, the gunmen had laid in wait in front of
his house behind Toengine Crescent off Ovom Road,
Ogbor Hill, Aba.
As he approached the front gate of his house, the
hoodlums were said to have forced him out of his car at
gunpoint and ordered him into their own waiting car.
An eyewitness said after the gunmen had forced their
victim into their car, they whisked him away to an
unknown destination, abandoning his car in front of his
gate.
The kidnappers were said to have contacted family
members of their victim and demanded a ransom of N20
million.

Good development

If we were in a country where honour still counts, Air
Marshall Alex Badeh, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff,
would have long handed over his letter of resignation to
the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed
Forces. If he didn’t do that, a commander-in-chief with his
hands on the job or a strong resolve to take on head long
the goons, making life hell for the citizenry, would have
done one thing: Shown Badeh the exit door.
If he won’t do that, a responsive National Assembly would
have summoned, not just the service chiefs, as it has
done, but also the commander-in-chief himself, to explain
why life has become this cheap in our country? And why,
despite the huge defence budgets, Boko Haram appears to
be having the upper hand? The Assembly would have
demanded the immediate sack of the defence and service
chiefs. And if the president can’t guarantee safety of lives
and property, he should have no business, calling himself
‘commander-in-chief.’ A commander-in-chief with heavy
casualty figures in peace or wartime should be deeply
worried and embarrassed.
For goodness sake, this is Africa’s most powerful nation.
This is Africa’s largest and best-trained armed forces, that
have acquitted itself in several peacekeeping missions
across the world. Is it enough to simply say, ‘guerrilla fight
is different from conventional warfare’ and watch
hundreds of our compatriots being slain daily by
insurgents? Is it enough to just sit by and watch parts of
our country being annexed by insurgents and all we offer
are rationalisations and condolence messages by those
whose business it is to protect the citizenry?
But, again this is Nigeria. A nation of ‘anything goes’, to
borrow the words of a former army chief, Gen. Salihu
Ibrahim. So, the politicians who ought to lead us out of our
insecurity nightmare, are preoccupied with plotting their
next political moves and campaigning for the next big
offices. Everyone is talking 2015, with a few actually
bothered about Chibok girls. Not many are bothered that
fellow citizens, their compatriots, are being slaughtered
like chickens, goats and rams in other parts of the country.
What a country!
It is not only Badeh that shouldn’t be sitting pretty in
office: The army chief, General Minimah and his
counterparts in other arms of the military as well as the
defence minister, General Aliyu Gusau, should have no
business, bearing their official titles or earning salaries
from the public coffers.
Badeh and the other men, manning our defence
apparatchik, should go, for one simple reason: Inability to
protect and defend Nigerians from terrorist attacks and
the rampaging Boko Haram sect. If a man or group of
men, are so paid to defend the territorial integrity of
Nigeria, and under their watch, hundreds of citizens are
maimed, bloodied and butchered by a bunch of insur­
gents, of what use are they to the public that picks their
bill? Of what use is a defence minister or defence chief,
who can’t defend us? Who can’t rally troops to deal
decisively with the brutal enemies? Of what use are
mountains of excuses or condolence messages to a dead
man or his grieving family?
Under the watch of Badeh and others, Boko Haram has
kept annexing more of our cities and towns in the North-
east, hoisting their flags and declaring their republic,
within our republic. Citizens in Adamawa, Yobe and other
parts of the North-east are living in fear, not knowing when
the goons from hell or wherever, will strike; and definitely
not sure that they have a military that can protect them.
How can the people have confidence in their military,
when even Badeh’s hometown of Vimtim, in Adamawa,
was also sacked by the insurgents? How can anyone have
confidence in a defence chief unable to defend even his
homestead? After Chibok girls were abducted from their
school, another set of 49 secondary school boys were
ambushed and slaughtered in a Yobe secondary school.
These are indeed terrible and embarrassing moments for
our people and nation. That it took a group of rag-tag local
hunters to liberate Mubi from Boko Haram, tells how
terribly embarrassing the situation has got to. And we all
ought to be gravely concerned about this anomalous state
of affairs.
When he came into power January 16, 2014, following the
sack of the service chiefs by President Jonathan, Badeh
was beaming with broad smiles and gusto. He promised to
rout Boko Haram within four months, that is by April 2014.
This is November, and what do we have: A reverse of what
Badeh promised us. Since his assumption of office, Boko
Haram has become even more deadly and brutal. They
captured over 200 school girls from their hostel in Chibok,
on April 14, 2014, the same month Badeh promised Boko
Haram would be history. Their calendar of blood shows
that they are maintaining significant control of many parts
of North-east. It is apparent Badeh has no answer to the
insurgents firepower. He gleefully announced on October
5, 2014, a ceasefire with the sect. He should have known
that terrorist groups have no respect for a ceasefire that
they didn’t ask for. Terrorists have to beg for ceasefire, not
their victims, pleading for one. Emboldened by a weakly-
negotiated ceasefire, Boko Haram unleashed further havoc
and terror on Nigerians in the North-east, hitting Yobe
school, annexing Adamawa towns of Mubi and Michika.
Something definitely has to be wrong with Badeh’s
strategies, which have led to a blundering battle strategy
by our soldiers.
Of course, I am angry, as I write this piece this Sunday
afternoon, reading the news of the capture of Hong,
another major city in Adamawa by Boko Haram. The news
said the group took control of the city, burnt down the
local police post and killed several residents of the town
and its environ. It had earlier attacked two villages in Hong
Local Government Area, before storming Hong main city.
Another news item I read on Saturday, which further
devastated me, was one that reported how our brave
soldiers fought gallantly in Mubi but were soon
overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the insurgents.
In most of the reports, the story is the same: Soldiers
capitulating before the superior firepower of insurgents.
Soldiers fleeing battlefront because they are either ill-
equipped or ill-motivated to confront the deadly guys. We
don’t know if this is true or not, as the military high
command has dispelled such news as rumour. But, if this
is not the correct position, why are we then losing more
territories to insurgents? Why are our citizens being killed
by the day? Something definitely is wrong somewhere.
Something definitely has to be done. Now!
I can hear someone ask if the sack of Badeh and the
service chiefs is the solution to the problem? It is definitely
a big part of the solution. Leadership is everything. We
have to keep sacking until we get the right men, who will
give us the right results!
If money meant for equipment is going the wrong way, a
probe is urgently required. If competence is the issue, let’s
get more competent hands to do the job. In the past, we
were told that once a Gen. Gusau or a Col. Dasuki, got in
the saddle, Boko Haram would fizzle out in no time. The
men have been there for quite a while now, nothing has
changed. Isn’t it time, we audited our men and materials
for optimum results?
There is also the urgent need for a national security
summit. Where are all the retired generals, who fought in
ECOMOG? The men who clobbered Charles Taylor,
Yommie Johnson, and their rag-tag guerrilla army in
Monrovia to submission? Where are our war veterans,
those with little tricks to surmount these insurgents? Let’s
get them talking and involved. I hope Mr. President is
reading?
As I have noted severally on this page, if what we are
witnessing in the Boko Haram insurgency is politics, this is
politics taken too far. If it is about 2015, this must be the
most devious way to get or retain power. Those being
killed are neither politicians nor office seekers. They are
our brothers and sisters; poor, hapless Nigerians, going
about their legitimate means of livelihood, which is even a
mirage for many. Death was far from their minds at the
break of dawn, only to get snuffed out at dusk. Truly, life is
a contradiction!
