It’s so sad this police inspector, attached to a division in Apapa, Lagos, Inspector Danjuma Daniel, on Thursday afternoon died during a fight with his wife. The fight was so fierce that both of them fell from the balcony of their two-storied building at the Ijeh Police Barracks, Obalende, Lagos; they were said to have been living there for about 10 years.

Both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but the husband could not survive the injury because the damage caused by the fall was too much; though the wife, simply named as Ada, was admitted for treatment and was later discharged from the hospital on Saturday morning.
May his soul rest in peace!

Although making resolutions to improve your financial situation is a good thing to do at any time of year, many people find it easier at the beginning of a new year. Regardless of when you begin, the basics remain the same. Here are my top seven keys to getting ahead financially.

1. Get Paid What You're Worth and Spend Less Than You Earn
It sounds simplistic, but many people struggle with this first basic rule. Make sure you know what your job is worth in the marketplace, by conducting an evaluation of your skills, productivity, job tasks, contribution to the company, and the going rate, both inside and outside the company, for what you do. Being underpaid even a thousand dollars a year can have a significant cumulative effect over the course of your working life.

No matter how much or how little you're paid, you'll never get ahead if you spend more than you earn. Often it's easier to spend less than it is to earn more, and a little cost-cutting effort in a number of areas can result in big savings. It doesn't always have to involve making big sacrifices.

2. Stick to a Budget
One of my favorite subjects: budgeting. It's not a four-letter word. How can you know where your money is going if you don't budget? How can you set spending and saving goals if you don't know where your money is going? You need a budget whether you make thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

3. Pay Off Credit Card Debt
Credit card debt is the number one obstacle to getting ahead financially. This may not really apply to Nigerian fellows, since few people have access to credit card. But in real sense, it's all about settling any debt and loans attached to you as at when due. Those little pieces of plastic are so easy to use, and it's so easy to forget that it's real money we're dealing with when we whip them out to pay for a purchase, large or small. Despite our good resolves to pay the balance off quickly, the reality is that we often don't, and end up paying far more for things than we would have paid if we had used cash.

4. Have a Savings Plan
You've heard it before: Pay yourself first! If you wait until you've met all your other financial obligations before seeing what's left over for saving, chances are you'll never have a healthy savings account or investments. Resolve to set aside a minimum of 5% to 10% of your salary for savings BEFORE you start paying your bills. Better yet, have money automatically deducted from your paycheck and deposited into a separate account.

5. Invest!
If you're contributing to a retirement plan and a savings account and you can still manage to put some money into other investments, all the better.

6. Review Your Insurance Coverages
Too many people are talked into paying too much for life and disability insurance, whether it's by adding these coverages to car loans, buying whole-life insurance policies when term-life makes more sense, or buying life insurance when you have no dependents. On the other hand, it's important that you have enough insurance to protect your dependents and your income in the case of death or disability.

7. Keep Good Records
If you don't keep good records, you're probably not claiming all your allowable income tax deductions and credits. Set up a system now and use it all year. It's much easier than scrambling to find everything at tax time, only to miss items that might have saved you money.

There was an accident at Mile 12 axis of Ikorodu Road in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, in the early hours of today, involving three trucks, one of which had broken down on the busy road and there was no road sign indicating that a vehicle is ahead.
This resulted in serious traffic jam during the rush hour. According to an eyewitness account, the accident occurred at about 4a.m. and involved a truck conveying bags of salt belonging to Bizler Logistics, and another truck carrying a container with Cross River State registration number AA 980 DUK, and a white trailer which was also damaged.

The accident happened when the Bizler Logistics trailer broke down close to Mile 12 overhead bridge inward Ikorodu, before the truck carrying fish feeds rammed into the stationary trailer, causing severe injuries to the driver and his assistant.

The two, according to the eyewitness, were taken to an undisclosed hospital in Ikorodu. “There was a bonfire to alert oncoming motorists about the broken down truck but as at the time the truck carrying a container got there, the fire had extinguished, leading to poor visibility,” the witness said.

He also added that there was a third truck which crashed into the other two and was towed away early in the morning by officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA).
A LASTMA official who spoke under anonymity confirmed that the accident involved three trucks. “Two have been moved, leaving the one carrying a container because it was the most damaged of the trailers,” he said.

President Goodluck Jonathan is claiming that ASUU has been infiltrated by elements of the opposition. He said the federal has tried his best to meet the demands made by ASUU to a substantial level, insisting they should no longer be reluctant to go back to the classroom and perform their duties.

The son of Senator Femi Kila from Ekiti State has been arrested in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for his involvement in armed robbery operation in the city.
Identified as Ola Kila, he was said to have led a gang of armed robbers to rob a Colonel at Mbora Estate by Jabi District of Abuja, where the Colonel's AK-47 and other valuable items were removed.

But Ola Kila denied participating in the robbery, saying it was one Igbo boy...
According to police sources, operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, working on a tip-off arrested him and while a search was conducted in his house around Life Camp area in Abuja, 16 live cartridges and some other incriminating exhibits were recovered from the suspect’s house.

During interrogation, it was discovered that the suspect allegedly belong to a notorious armed robbery gang that has been terrorizing the FCT and its environs.

But Ola Kila insisted that his friend, an Igbo boy, whom he knew to be a member of a robbery gang brought the gun and the cartridges to his house and that the boy has gone back to the East with the intention of bringing more arms and ammunition.

He disclosed that the said Igbo boy brought two laptops robbed at gun point to him, which he sold to buyers in the popular GSM Village, Abuja.

He also alleged that the said Igbo boy robbed a man at Life Camp and shot him sometimes in May this year.

Ola Kila and another suspect have been remanded in prison by Karu Area Magistrate Court pending further investigation and the arrest of the said Igbo boy

A video clip showing a primary school teacher in Edo State, Mrs. Augusta Odemwingie, who failed a reading test conducted by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, has continued to generate a debate on YouTube.

The clip is currently the most viewed out of the 68 videos available on the state government’s YouTube channel. It has attracted about 51,000 viewers as at the time of writing this report.

In the video — which is also a subject of debate on various social networking sites — the teacher could not read her own sworn affidavit during a teachers’ verification exercise, though she was alleged to have spent over 20 years on the job.

At a point, the woman pronounced ‘registered’ as ‘registrated,’ ‘declaration of age’ as ‘decreation of age,’ while she struggled to pronounce words written in the sworn affidavit that she allegedly submitted as part of her credentials.

Oshiomhole kept correcting her pronunciation errors, and then, he paused for a while and asked, “Who is the teacher?” Unable to restrain herself from laughing over the development, Odemwingie replied the governor, saying, “You are the teacher, sir.’’

Well that's what they are saying. A source said popular Alaba marketer, Uba Pacific has bought the rights for Burna boy's L.I.F.E album for N10m. Mohammed and Aftab Asghar, 22, were both arrested after DNA evidence was found at the scene which provided a possible link to one, or both, the brothers. Since identical twins come from the same fertilised egg, they have the same DNA.

Police investigated after a girl aged 17 claimed she was attacked in a park near Reading, Berks, on Guy Fawkes Night 2011. Detectives decided to charge both men. Prosecutors have now requested more time to continue investigating lines of inquiry which may lead to only one of the brothers facing trial.

Prosecutor Sandra Beck told Reading crown court: “It is an unusual case. They are identical twins. The allegation is one of rape.[/b]

[b]“There is further work due and there is an indication which would tend to support that one was not at the location.’’
No further details were revealed about the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.

Russia has come up with a novel idea to keep motorists from going over the speed limit – by using topless models to slow them down.
The bare-chested ladies almost brought traffic to a halt as they stood at the side of a highway in the Nizhny Novgorodregion of Russia, east of Moscow, on Monday waving 40mph speed signs.

A video of their antics was uploaded to YouTube, and the accompanying caption reads: “When they noticed a car rushing at a speed exceeding 60 kmh (40mph), the maximum speed allowed in Russian cities, the half-naked women raised road signs.”

The anti-speeding sex sirens also donned sailor caps, thigh-high boots and suspenders. Unsurprisingly, most of the drivers who did slow down were men.

The public organisation ‘Autodvijenie’ from the area organised the flash mob, supported by local police, ahead of a 1 September law change that will mean drivers are only fined for exceeding the speed limit by 20 kmh, instead of 10 kmh.

THE Lagos State government had arrested three butchers selling tuberculosis infected beef, even as it clamped down on three illegal slaughter slabs in the state.

The butchers were arrested at Alapere-Ketu axis of state by a team of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences task force, led by the chairman, Mr. Bayo Sulaiman. The three illegal slaughter slabs were at Ajegunle, Alapere and Ajelogo.
According to Dr. Nureini Funsho, Senior Special Assistant, SSA, to the state governor on agriculture:

Some of these butchers know that the animals are bad for consumption but they still slaughter them for sale at these illegal slabs.”

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is an “outright failure” and should be defeated in the 2015 election, [size=13]Ganiyat Fawehinmi[/size] said in a statement on Wednesday as she assessed the country’s challenges.

“Our present Federal Government led by Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is an outright failure and we pray that by 2015, he will not return,” said Ganiyat, wife of the late Senior Advocate of Nigeria and radical lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi.
She said at no time in the history of Nigeria had the country been steamrolled by so many disasters, loss of lives and unprecedented mishaps as being witnessed now.
“The inhabitants and indegenes of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria have never witnessed such an unprecedented series of mishaps, disasters and the loss of lives in the nation like we are presently experiencing,” she said.
She listed the ASUU strike, the high rate of unemployment in the country, the marriage of underage girls, the failure of the Ministry of Women affairs to lift women up, the epileptic electricity supply in the country and the police pension scandal as some of the issues Jonathan has failed to address.
“I must say categorically that I am in total support of the ASUU strike and I urge all Nigerians to support it,” she said.
Mrs Fawehinmi said the huge unemployment of Nigerian youths has led to various vices in the society such as armed robbery, kidnapping, prostitution, assassinations and the activities of Boko Haram in northern Nigeria.
She said Emeka Wogu, Minister of Labour and Productivity, has failed to employ Nigerians but has been accumulating money to run for governor in Abia State.
“By the special grace of God, he will lose and the wrath of Almighty God will descend upon him in accordance with the scriptures in the book of Habakkuk 2: 9-11,” she said.
Mrs. Fawehinmi said the issue of pension and failure to pay those who worked hard in Nigeria is a “disgrace to the nation”.
“This is a big disgrace, the PDP-led government is encouraging the death of pensioners while supporting the stealing of their funds. This is the kind of government we have in Nigeria and we pray that Nigerians will be reasonable not to return them in 2015,” she said.
She said it was a terrible shame that Senator Ahmed Yerima and former governor of Zamfara State could advocate both in theory and practice that a young girl of 13 or 14 years be married and be allowed to bear children.
“I must thank Nigerians who in their entirety rejected this unholy practice and held several rallies and protests to prove their point,” she said.
On the epileptic power supply in Nigeria, Mrs Fawehinmi said it is heartbreaking that Nigeria needs at least 60,000 mega watts of electricity but can not even boast of a tenth of that figure.
Mrs. Fawehinmi released her statement at Oregun area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, where she had come to attend a book launch by the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, CACOL.

A 25-year-old man committed suicide on Thursday morning by electrocuting himself on an overhead power line in Nakuru, Kenya.
