Long after the conflict ended, some veterans came forward to speak about experiences that continue to unsettle historians, mental health experts, and the wider public.
One of them was Varnado Simpson, a former U.S. Army soldier whose later confessions exposed the moral disintegration that can take place in wartime.
Simpson openly acknowledged his involvement in extreme acts of violence against Vietnamese civilians.
His accounts were not framed as excuses, but as reflections of deep regret and emotional suffering.
He spoke of how the war stripped away his sense of humanity and how those memories followed him for the rest of his life. In 1997, burdened by trauma and guilt, Simpson took his own life.
His testimony is frequently linked to the My Lai massacre, one of the most infamous war crimes of the Vietnam War. On 16 March 1968, American troops entered Sơn Mỹ village in Quảng Ngãi Province believing enemy forces were present.
Instead, they found defenseless civilians. The operation devolved into the mass killing of hundreds of men, women, children, and elderly residents.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the atrocities at My Lai were not the actions of a single rogue soldier, but the result of systemic failures in leadership, discipline, and moral judgment. Survivors later described executions, mistreatment, and the annihilation of entire families.
kayjordan: The current President Bola Tinubu is the strongest politician in Nigeria for many reasons - but one fact you must know is that, he's like a "Mafia-Politician" and you need someone that matches this quality to defeat him.
The contenders for the Aso seat in 2027 puts a light weight on the scale - to have the full chicken on it, goes beyond the consolidation of political parties - it's practically about individuality in this regard. Strong people bring value to political parties and the party structure rely on these strong individuals.
It may have been thought of severally, if Nigeria could have something like a Dangote/Otedola ticket on any political platform for example; but the truth is, such ticket would only be as powerful as the economy - not politically. Therefore there's no current billionaire in Nigeria that can contest with Tinubu except if you provide a "Donald Trump" replica.
The patronage system in Nigeria is an entitlement culture which acts as the fuel for the political machinery - from the average man on the streets to chieftains down to the civil service - everybody wants a share of the "National Cake" - nobody really cares about the "National Interest". Once you understand the psychology of Nigerians, you win the chess match.
To rule "the unruly" - you must be crazy enough to do it. There's a similar man that fits this description - "Wike".
The political branding of the - "money bag" or the "people's advocate", hasn't been proven to work effectively in Nigerian elections because - the system requires "familiarity". A well-known politician has more edge over a money-bag or an activists. It's just like a lady dating a rich sugar daddy and showing loyalty to a broke guy or an average guy she's known for years instead.
Nigerians are complex - to be as attractive as the man in power, you need a mix of big money, love for the people and massive popularity with ruthlessness. "Nobody listens to the Gentleman; they listen to the Soldier".

Rising Kidnappings Spark Youth Protest in Ekpoma, APC Billboards Pulled Down
Residents of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, were thrown into tension after angry youths and students took to the streets to protest the alarming rise in kidnappings in the area.
The demonstration, which occurred in the early hours of the day, was triggered by recent abductions affecting students and residents, particularly along major roads and areas close to campuses. Protesters expressed frustration over what they described as persistent insecurity and lack of effective response from authorities.
Eyewitnesses said the youths blocked key roads during the protest, chanting solidarity songs and calling for urgent action to secure the town. In the process, campaign billboards belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) were pulled down and destroyed, reflecting widespread anger over the perceived failure to address security concerns.
Ekpoma, a major university town, has in recent months witnessed growing fear among students, parents, and residents due to repeated kidnapping incidents. Many students have reportedly limited their movement, especially at night, while parents have raised concerns about the safety of their children.
Reacting to the protest, the Edo State Police Command confirmed awareness of the situation, stating that security had been reinforced in Ekpoma to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The police also appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that efforts were ongoing to tackle criminal activities in the area.
As of the time of reporting, no casualties were recorded, and the protest was brought under control. However, the incident has once again highlighted the growing anxiety over insecurity in parts of Edo State and renewed calls for decisive government action.
Residents say they hope the protest will serve as a wake-up call for authorities to intensify security measures and restore confidence in the safety of the community.
