I know some would object but investing in viable shares/stocks is still a good way of keeping ur money outside banks. U can access it anytime u wish to and there r possibilities of appreciation and dividends.
But pls study the stock market and know it well before investing there.

abhosts: If you are not an Internet Savvy person, here is a tip for you:

Open both a Savings Account and a Current Account with the same Bank.

Leave most of your Cash in your Current Account with no Internet Banking or ATM Facility.

Activate Internet Banking on Your Savings and only fund it with Cash just enough for your Online Transactions.

Nice one. But I feel it should be the other way round. Activate internet banking on your current account so you can transact with other banks. It seems transactions on savings accounts are limited on internet banking.
