PoliticsNigeria’s Inflation Rises To 34.80% In December by Bobloco(op): 8:32pm On Jan 15, 2025
.....as CPPE calls for monetary policy adjustments

Nigeria’s inflation rate surged to 34.80 percent in December 2024 from 34.60 percent in November.

This is according to the latest Consumer Price Index and inflation data released on Wednesday by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS.

While the country’s inflation continues to rise, the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, has identified tips for its moderation.

The December inflation data showed that the country’s inflation further rose marginally by 0.20 percent due to heightened demand for goods and services during the festive season.

On a year-on-year basis, the December inflation rate marked a significant increase of 5.87 percentage points compared to 28.92 percent in December 2023.

The untamed rise in the Nigeria’s inflation highlights the upward trajectory in consumer prices, driven by economic challenges such as currency depreciation, high energy costs and persistent supply chain disruptions.

“On a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 5.87 percent higher than the rate recorded in December 2023 (28.92 percent). This shows that the headline inflation rate (on a year-on-year basis) increased in December 2024 compared to the same month in the preceding year (i.e., December 2023),” NBS stated.

Meanwhile, NBS said Nigeria’s food inflation dropped marginally to 39.83 percent in December 2024 from 39.93 percent in November on a year-on-year basis.

CPPE reacts

Reacting, the Chief Executive Officer at the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Muda Yusuf, said the inflationary pressures continue to be a troubling feature of the Nigerian economy as reflected in December’s inflation rate.

“Though the increase in the December headline inflation was marginal at 0.2% compared with November inflation figures.”

However, Yusuf is optimistic that Nigeria’s inflation would have a positive outlook in 2025 due to moderation in exchange rate volatility and improvement in foreign reserves.

“Meanwhile, the inflation outlook for 2025 promises to be positive for the following reasons: Sustained moderation in exchange rate volatility and improvements in foreign reserves.

“Prospects of easing geopolitical tensions with the inception of the Trump presidency in a few days time.

“And a strong base effect, given the high inflationary pressures experienced in 2024,” he stated.

The economic think tank group, CPPE, also decried the current fixation of the National Assembly on revenue, especially the arbitrary revenue targets for ministries, departments, and agencies.

“Excessive pressure on MDAs to boost revenue and increase IGR has profound inflationary implications.

“The reality is that such pressures are invariably transmitted to investors in the form of higher fees, levies, penalties, import duties, regulatory charges, etc. These outcomes are in conflict with government aspirations to boost investment, curb inflation, and create jobs.

“Revenue targets should be based on empirical studies, absorptive capacity of the economy, and due consideration of the wider economic implications.

“Obsession with revenue would hurt investments, worsen inflationary pressures, aggravate poverty, and impede economic growth. There should be a careful balancing act between revenue growth aspirations, desire to boost investment, and commitment to moderate inflation,” CPPE stated.

How Nigeria’s inflation rate can drop – CPPE

CPPE highlighted that Nigeria’s inflation can moderate on pause of monetary tightening policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria, reducing fiscal risks.

“To ensure a further moderation in inflationary pressures, CPPE recommends as follows:

“Pause on monetary policy tightening and interest rate hikes by the CBN to reduce business operating costs.

“Reduction in fiscal risks to macroeconomic stability through a reduction in fiscal deficit and deceleration in growth of public debt,” the CPPE stated.

CrimeThe Celebrity Drug Dealers - Tribune Editorial by Bobloco(op): 5:39am On Jan 15, 2025
BECAUSE good governance over the years has been largely in abeyance, Nigerians have tended to look up to the wrong people as role models. Left in the lurch by their own government, Nigerians look towards religious leaders, often of dubious piety, for comfort over the vagaries of life, and to moneybags and socialites who are actually hardened criminals covering their tracks with philanthropy, for emotional and mental support. Nigerians, citizens of an abundantly blessed but criminally managed country, have never hidden their admiration for heroes whose lives effectively mirror what they would have loved to be if life hadn’t been such a terrible ordeal.

The pestilential cast of party freaks who regularly paint the town red with cash under the glare of cameras and the adulation of musicians lost in a trance under their “dollar rain” knows this very well, and takes advantage of it to the fullest. Apprised of the populace’s worship of their lifestyle, these celebrity criminals set the trend in couture, ruling social gatherings, night life, and even religious gatherings with their regal presence. They are the movers and shakers of society whose every step in party halls exudes affluence, and whose long list of chieftaincy titles brings the Nigerian society’s love for filthy lucre into exceptionally bold relief.

Had the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) not arrested the wanted drug kingpin and Lagos socialite, 61-year-old Alhaja Aishat Feyisara Ajoke Elediye, on New Year Day in her mansion at the Okota area of Lagos following the interception of a truckload of illicit drug consignment from her staff on the same day, she would still have been living life to the fullest, making money rain where it matters.

Before the glare of cameras and the adulations of the hordes of poor people who get a thrill watching the rich and affluent live the “glorious” life to which they aspire. As it turns out, though, the woman known as Alhaja Ajoke in social circles or Iya Ruka (Ruka’s mum) in the drug underworld had “her true identity shrouded in mystery for years while she remained on the wanted list of NDLEA for leading one of the drug cartels operating from Mushin area of Lagos.”

But the lid “was however blown off her invincibility on Wednesday, 1st January, 2025 when NDLEA operatives acting on intelligence intercepted a white Izuzu truck carrying 44 jumbo sacks containing 1,540 kilograms of imported cannabis and driven by one of her staffers.” Thereafter, the nation was told, operatives of the narcotics agency stormed her hideout, where they arrested her.

Hear the NDLEA: “On the surface, Alhaja Ajoke is a businesswoman who imports fabrics and shoes from China but beneath is a massive illicit drug trade. She is also recognised as the Iyalaje of Blessing Sisters, an influential club of society women in Lagos.” Away from the influential alhaja and her story, NDLEA officers had, in another major operation on December 27, 2024, arrested a US-trained Hollywood and Nollywood filmmaker, Emeka Emmanuel Mbadiwe, who doubled as a motivational speaker at his Lekki Hotel room following the arrest of his partner, Uzoekwe Ugochukwu James, at a warehouse in Ajao Estate, Ikeja, where he was sent by Mbadiwe to collect a shipment of 33 parcels of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis weighing 17.30 kilograms, which arrived the Import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja on 24th December 2024 from the United States on a Delta Airline flight, concealed in large wooden boxes.”

Times was in this country when people valued their name and and loathed to do anything that would hurt it and, by extension, their family and lineage. Today, a new morality subsists and people just want to be rich and recognised, including in places of worship, and will often do anything that will facilitate that status. The society worships money; every criminal activity is now described as hustling. But as we noted in previous editorials, hustling in Nigerian parlance does not convey a determination to toe the path of hard work and persistence to make wealth. Rather, it refers to an inordinate ambition to come into wealth by all means, especially by foul means. For instance, until his arrest by the police in September 2022 for kidnapping, John Ewa, alias John Lyon, a social media influencer, posed as a hustler on social media. Like the notorious international fraudster, Raymond Abbas (a.k.a Hushpuppi), Ewa habitually uploaded pictures and videos on the internet showing him living big. His known business was interior decoration and he owned a firm, Lyon Interior Hub. In a particular video, he urged his followers to work hard so that they could conquer poverty: “My brother, hustle o!”. But beneath the veneer of internet sensationalism lay a dark record. Busted by members of Operation Puff Adder, a unit of the Nigeria Police in Abuja, Ewa was a pitiable sight as he pleaded for forgiveness of his crimes, groveling in manacles.

The Nigerian masses always want to copy the lifestyles of these larger-than-life celebrities who habitually throw bundles of money at people in parties, not realising that they are actually members of the criminal underworld who cheat, rob and kill to obtain their wealth. They are criminals who compromise certain law enforcement officers with their corruptly obtained wealth and lead many people astray with their ostentatious lifestyles. If anything, the arrest of otherwise known socialites recently by the NDLEA allegedly for drug dealings speaks once again to the celebration of criminals and criminality by Nigerians without regard to the source of their wealth. Typically, those who engage in flamboyant spendings have their roots in crime. The people must come to the realisation that real wealth has to come, and can only come, from verifiable production, not abracadabra.

Nigerians must resist the urge to give recognition to those with dubious sources of wealth, knowing that ultimately, anything that is not real will end up being exposed in the long run as fake and unworthy. On its part, the government must live up to billing and wean people off the accustomed worship of criminals.

We expect the NDLEA to ensure that the suspects are made to go through the due processes of the law. Nigerians expect no less from the NDLEA. Drug dealers are a menace to the society. They deserve to live the rest of their years behind bars.

And when many a Nigerian youth takes their cue from individuals like Lyon on social media, they are unwittingly setting themselves up for the inescapable crash that comes with inordinate ambition

THE alarm by Governor Seyi Makinde that bandits fleeing military bombardments in the North-West are seeking refuge in Oyo State is proof enough of the recurrence of their invasion of the South-West. In 2019, bandits and herders from the terror-impacted northern region infiltrated the South-West forests, villages, and towns. They constituted a huge security menace to the South-West but were soon repelled by the governors. Instead of the futile wait for the shorthanded centre, Makinde’s alarm should nudge the governors to collaborate again to repel the bandits.

Nigeria is a federal state, so the governors should strengthen state-level policing as it is in other federal countries.

At a New Year Thanksgiving service, Makinde said, “During a security briefing this morning, I learned that some bad elements from the North-West are relocating here due to military heat in their zones. During my birthday retreat in Fashola, bandits had camped less than two kilometres from where I was staying. This underscores the seriousness of the situation.” This is petrifying.

The earlier invasion of the forests, villages, and towns in the South-West by herders, unemployed youths and bandits prompted the then governors of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Oyo to establish the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) in January 2020. The initiative was spearheaded by the Chairman of the South-West Governors’ Forum and the governor of Ondo, the late Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Amotekun complements the efforts of the police and other security agencies to secure the region. As the first regional security outfit in the Fourth Republic, the Federal Government and northern hawks resisted it. The governors’ determination paved the way for its establishment.

Amotekun has since proved useful in delivering security to the South-West. It combed the region’s forests and towns to flush the bandits out and ensure the relative peace there.

In Osun, Amotekun has apprehended over 300 suspected kidnappers. In Oyo, human trafficking, ritual killings, kidnapping, and farmer-herder clashes have reduced. During the 2021 Yuletide, Ondo Amotekun arrested 600 suspected criminals and impounded over 550 vehicles. It had prosecuted 600 suspects in the state by mid-2024 and resolved over 500 herder-farmer cases.

The South-West is in danger again because banditry/terrorism in the North-West is unrelenting. The Institute for Security Studies in Dakar, Senegal, estimates there are about 30,000 bandits’ groups in North-West Nigeria “with the groups’ numbers ranging from 10 to over 1,000 fighters….”

While the NBS says in a recent report that the North-West had the highest incidence of reported crime with 14.4 million in the country, Zamfara disclosed in 2021 that bandits collected N970 million as ransom from victims’ families between 2011 and 2019.

The military recently relaunched relentless bombardments in the North, which prompted the bandits to flee.

Therefore, the South-West governors should reboot their security operations to overpower the assailants again. Governors can convene a security summit on this.

The Amotekun officers should be armed with sophisticated weapons and other modern devices. Additionally, the operations should employ technology. Drones should be deployed to police the forests in the zone to flush out the bandits.

The current high insecurity there should persuade the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to disallow Amotekun from carrying high-grade weapons. Indeed, there is no better time to establish state police than now.

Monitoring South-West forests should be a 24-hour business and not limited to challenging times. This calls for proper funding and recruitment of more competent hands for results.

The non-conventional and conventional security outfits – the police, military, DSS, immigration, Amotekun and vigilantes – should synergise and engage in collaborative intelligence gathering and operational activities for effective security delivery.

Security is the primary purpose of government. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum and its regional counterparts should organise security summits to brainstorm on delivering sustainable security to the people.

Politics2027 Lagos Guber Polls: No Vacancy For Seyi Tinubu, Group Replies Youth Minister by Bobloco(op): 7:03pm On Jan 14, 2025
A group of Lagos natives, De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, on Tuesday, faulted the remarks made by the Minister of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, claiming that Seyi Tinubu is fit to lead Lagos State in 2027.

In a statement by its media office, the group described the statement by the minister as careless, adding that it is not a representation of the people of Lagos State.

The statement reads: “Our attention had been drawn once again to a media interview granted recently by the Minister for Youths claiming that Seyi Tinubu is fit to lead Lagos State.

“We condemn the careless statement made by the Minister for Youth, and we regard it as his own and not a representation of the people of Lagos State across the five divisions of Lagos State: Epe, Lagos, Badagry, Ikeja, and Ikorodu Divisions of Lagos State.

“We know as a fact that Mr Seyi Tinubu, as much mouthed, is not from any of the divisions in Lagos State. Mr Seyi can’t lay claim to either Epe, Badagry, Lagos Division, Ikeja, or Ikorodu division of Lagos State. To state it clearly, Mr Seyi Tinubu is not from Lagos State.

“We have said it timelessly that any state in Nigeria who is proud of Seyi Tinubu and any of his benevolent attributes can make request of him to govern them, but as youths in Lagos State who have the capacity to govern ourselves, we say no to Mr Seyi Tinubu, and the simple meaning of that is that we can govern ourselves and not in need of any outsider to lead us.

“We know that some elders have sold us out to the government of the day. They are equally ready to sell us more. While we know that they are free to seek bread and butter for themselves, we say no to their further attempts to sell Lagos State to Mr Seyi Tinubu.

“We want to use this opportunity to remind Mr Seyi Tinubu not to fall for the deceit of those pushing him to contest. We also wish to remind him that Lagos is not like before when our fathers sold the state to government of the day.

“This time around, as vibrant youths of the state, we will resist any attempt to force Mr Seyi Tinubu on us as governor of our dear state.

“Lagos state throne is not for the picking anymore. If Seyi qualifies to run for the guber race, so be it, but he should try from Osun state or Oyo state, where his mum hailed from.

“Lagos State has more than enough sons and daughters to stand in for the trophy. Nigeria is not ready for imperial rule. She is not a monarchy.”
