Politics › Atiku’s Record As Head Of Nigeria’s Economic Team Unparalleled – PDP by Bobloco(op): 12:52am On Nov 26, 2024 |
Amidst Nigeria’s economic challenges, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has recalled how the nation prospered under the Obasanjo/ Atiku presidency (1999-2007), with the then Vice President, Atiku Abubakar as head of the national economic council.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, went down memory lane in a birthday message to Atiku on behalf of party.
He said, “The PDP and Nigerians across board continue to recognize Atiku Abubakar’s record of performance in the service to our nation, particularly as the Chairman of the National Economic Council under the Obasanjo/Atiku-led PDP administration between 1999 and 2007, during which our nation achieved massive and unparalleled national productivity in all sectors to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
He said the party was proud of and celebrates the former Vice President and PDP Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Presidential election, who is also one of the founding fathers of the Party, “as he marks his birthday today.”
Ologunagba further said, “Atiku Abubakar is a selfless, compassionate, humble and people-oriented leader; a unifier, forthright politician, democrat and global Statesman who continues to dedicate his intellect, energy, resources and abilities towards the unity, stability and economic development of our dear nation.
“His outstanding leadership qualities led to the overwhelming support and massive votes from Nigerians across all walks of life for him and our Party in the 2019 and 2023 Presidential elections, which mandate was unfortunately subverted by undemocratic forces, resulting in the current sorry state of affairs in our nation.
“Our Party extols Atiku Abubakar for his resilience as the people’s leader as demonstrated in his unrelenting passion and quest for good governance, economic prosperity, accountability, equity, justice, fairness and strict adherence to the demands of the Rule of Law and democratic tenets in the overall interest of the wellbeing of all Nigerians.
“On this auspicious occasion, the PDP family prays to the Almighty Allah to grant Atiku Abubakar more wisdom, sound health and strength in the service of our dear fatherland and humanity.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/11/atikus-record-as-head-of-nigerias-economic-team-unparalleled-pdp/

Politics › Tinubu Welcomes Third-Quarter GDP Growth, Says $1 Trillion Economy Possible by Bobloco(op): 9:30pm On Nov 25, 2024 |
President Bola Tinubu on Monday said Nigeria is on track to becoming a $1tn economy by 2030.
Tinubu premised this assertion on the recent statistics that showed a 3.46 per cent GDP growth for the third quarter of 2024 (July, August and September).
The third-quarter report by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew by 3.46 per cent, compared to the 3.19 per cent growth recorded in the second quarter.
The top contributing sectors to GDP in Q3 2024 are Agriculture, 28.65 per cent; ICT 16.35 per cent; Trade 14.78 per cent; Manufacturing 8.21 per cent; Crude Oil, 5.57 per cent; Finance & Insurance 5.51 per cent and Real Estate 5.43 per cent.
“The growth in GDP shows that President Tinubu’s quest for a more robust boost in the economy and, by extension, a better standard of living for all Nigerians is on course,” the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, said in a statement he signed Monday titled, ‘President Tinubu assures of greater economic output, welcomes third quarter GDP growth figure.’
While assuring Nigerians of better economic output, Tinubu said the 3.46 per cent growth indicates Nigeria is recovering from the reforms’ unintended effects.
“President Tinubu said his administration has not and will never forget his promise of a $1tn economy by 2030.
“He assured that once the economy is rebased by early 2025 to capture its dynamism and record significant changes that have occurred in different sectors, the country will be on its way to shared prosperity,” Dare said.
The NBS says the latest GDP growth in the third quarter is driven by key sectors such as Agriculture, Transport, Education, Health, Real Estate, Finance and Insurance, ICT, Trade and Manufacturing.
Tinubu said, “I am excited by the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics that our economy grew in the third quarter more than last quarter and even beyond projected estimates.
“While I welcome this development, the latest figure also shows the much work that needs to be done.
“We won’t rest until Nigerians feel the positive impacts in their pockets and experience a better living standard. My administration remains committed to the welfare of our people.”
The President said this performance once again shows that the reforms embarked upon by the Tinubu administration to reposition the economy and ensure better fiscal management are beginning to yield fruits.
He noted that the proposed tax reforms also indicate the administration’s resolve to reduce the tax burden on small businesses and spread prosperity to the poor.
“The new Tax regime seeks to promote equity by reducing what is known as the headquarters effect—a situation where states, where company headquarters are based, get more benefits because their taxes for the whole nation are remitted—in favour of spatial and demographic equity,” said the President. https://punchng.com/tinubu-welcomes-third-quarter-gdp-growth-says-1tn-economy-possible/#google_vignette

It has gotten so bad that Nigerians are earnestly yearning to go back in time to the good old days of purposeful and responsible leadership.
Come 2027, Nigerians will also be yearning for Goodluck Jonathan to come back and rescue this country from the dungeon the APC janjawiidians have sunk it into. |

The authorities must do more to bring down the cost of food
The 5th Wave of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) General Household Survey 2023/2024 which tracked the resilience of Nigerians over time was released last Thursday.
A combination of climate-induced issues, recent reform programmes and security challenges are sparking growing food crisis in the country. That’s the conclusion of the latest NBS report done in collaboration with the World Bank.
In the past 12 months, the report further stated, “more than one-third of households faced food shortages, which occurred more frequently in the months of June, July, and August. Price increases on major food items were the most prevalent shock reported by households, affecting 71.0 per cent of surveyed households.”
Approximately two out of three households indicated being unable to eat healthy, nutritious or preferred foods because of lack of money in the last 30 days, according to the report. “Similarly, 63.8 per cent of households ate only a few kinds of food due to lack of money, 62.4 per cent were worried about not having enough food to eat, and 60.5 per cent ate less than they thought they should,” the report stated. “Between Waves 4 and 5, the proportion of households that reported being worried about not having enough food to eat because of lack of money increased significantly, from 36.9 per cent to 62.4 per cent.”
Even before the latest report, the United Nations had predicted a looming acute hunger in Nigeria and 20 other countries in the coming months. But it is concerning that domestic food price inflation in Nigeria remains among the highest globally. The price surge has strained household incomes, making it increasingly difficult for low-income families to afford basic food items. To compound the challenge, it would seem that the federal government is not serious about bringing down the prices of essential food commodities in a bid to alleviate the current suffering by Nigerians.
On 15 July, the federal government announced the implementation of the import duty waiver programme on food items expected to run till 31 December 2024. But more than four months after that announcement, not much has happened with reports that stringent guidelines have hampered its operation. Yet, the gravity of the situation was better expressed in a statement by UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation Director-General, Qu Dongyu who noted that “The magnitude of suffering is alarming. It is incumbent upon all of us to act now and to act fast to save lives, safeguard livelihoods and prevent the worst situation.”
While hunger is a general problem in the country, the food crisis is more pronounced in the Northeast. “Food insecurity and malnutrition are among the main drivers of humanitarian need in the BAY (Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe) states,” said the head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Nigeria, Trond Jensen. “People have been forced to adopt negative coping mechanisms such as survival sex and child labour to stay alive. Over the past year, dozens of farmers have lost their lives, and others have been abducted or injured while eking out a living outside the security perimeters of Borno’s garrison towns due to limited farming lands and few or no livelihood options.”
In the 2023 Global Hunger Index (GHI) report, Nigeria was reported to have “a level of hunger that is serious.” Yet today the situation is far worse. Since food is needed for survival and well-being, there is a need for urgent intervention to avert a human catastrophe in the country. While commend both the Minister of Budget and Planning, Abubakar Bagudu and the Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, for the survey that captures the dynamics of Nigerian households, we enjoin authorities at all levels to come up with practical solutions to the challenge of food security in Nigeria. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/11/25/a-nation-of-hungry-people-2/

It's purely a matter of courtesy. Nuhu Ribadu is nowhere near integrity. If he were truly a man of integrity, he wouldn't be working for Tinubu, whom he once described as a notorious criminal of international dimensions who must surely face the full wrath of the law.
