PoliticsAfenifere To FG: Fuel Price Hike Compounding Challenges Nigerians Are Facing by Bobloco(op): 12:51am On Sep 05, 2024
The Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, on Wednesday, said that the hike in petrol price is compounding challenges Nigerians are facing urging the Federal Government to reverse the announced increment.

Afenifere, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr Jare Ajayi, asserted that Nigerians are currently going through a lot of challenges as a result biting socio-economic crunch and the attendant hardships.

Ajayi said: “It is therefore a wrong time to come up with any policy that will increase the undesirable challenges Nigerians are going through presently. Failure by the NNPCL to reverse the latest increment in fuel price will rub off negatively on some policies of Tinubu administration to ease things for the citizens. Policies such as the Students Loan Scheme and Consumer Credit Scheme that are just taking off.”

It would be recalled that the NNPCL, on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 raised the pump price of petrol to N897 per litre from the official price of N617.

Afenifere argued that it is curious that an organization that declared a profit running into trillions of Naira could, almost in the same breath, claim that it is indebted to the tune of nearly seven billion US dollars. “Why not pay off the debt from the available fund before declaring it as profit?

“It is a common knowledge that the cost and availability of energy such as petrol, gas, electricity, diesel and kerosine are major factors not only in production and services but also on the quality of well-being that Nigerians can enjoy. Hikes in prices of these energy sources have astronomically increased the costs of services and commodities, reduced the disposal incomes of average Nigerians and heighten their health risk.

The combination of all these are making a daily living an onerous task for the majority of the citizens. Considering the fact that millions of the Nigerians had been described as being ‘multi-dimensionally poor’, the recent hike in costs of fuel and electricity are uploading the number of people in that category phenomenally”, the group’s spokesperson said.

While urging the Federal Government to immediately order the NNPCL to reverse the price increase, Afenifere feared that failure to do so may imperil the assurances being giving by President Bola Tinubu that Nigerians’ pains will soon be over.

the Debt you were owing Quatar you think that just walked away on its own? All the extra money your governors are collecting just magically appeared? FAAC that was sharing 400Billion in 2023 is now making 2Trillion and sharing 1.3Trillion across all levels of government......
FAAC increased but the value of whatever they governors seem to collect today have greatly depreciated in value due to Tinubu's calamitous economic policies.
How much is the Naira exchanging to a dollar today under this calamitous Tinubu regime?

Without paying subsidy, Tinubu have even borrowed much more in his first fifteen months than what Buhari borrowed through out his eight year tenure with subsidy payments

There's no explanation for this monumental disaster Tinubu have turned out to become. He is arrogantly clueless.
The number of Nigerians Tinubu have pushed below the poverty line in his first fifteen months in office is much more than what other past presidents of Nigeria have done combined

Tinubu is a disaster

DeLaRue:
What should we do.

Dangote refinery can't sell to us below what it costs it to produce the petrol.

NNPC claims they are owing over $6 billion due in part to subsidy payments. Yet you want them to continue to pay subsidy so petrol price can be low.

If the country can no longer afford to pay subsidy, we need to face the reality that with the exception of the Arab nations, petrol is an expensive product in almost every country in the world.

In Niger Republic, Ghana and many other neighbouring countries, petrol sells for around N1300.

It is unrealistic to think petrol cam continue to sell for N600 here.

If we have to pay between N850 - N900 for Mr Dangote's petrol, we just have to manage it.
Is any of these neighbouring African countries you mentioned among the top 10 oil-producing countries in the world?

APC Played opposition effectively but performed woefully in power becoming the worst regime in the history of this country
PoliticsFlashback: Petrol Should Never Cost More Than ₦70 Per Litre – APC by Bobloco(op): 6:50pm On Sep 04, 2024
Nigerians are expressing widespread frustration and concern as the price of petrol has surged to an unprecedented ₦855 per liter at Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations, particularly in Lagos.
This sharp increase has exacerbated the ongoing scarcity of the commodity, leaving citizens scrambling for fuel and struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.

The issue has sparked reactions across the country, with many taking to social media to voice their displeasure.

Notably, Nollywood actress and activist, Kate Henshaw, shared a video on her platform, lamenting that her driver discovered the new hike while attempting to purchase fuel.

She highlighted the sudden increase by over ₦200 per liter as particularly alarming.

This current crisis comes several years after the All Progressives Congress (APC), now the ruling party, had criticized the previous administration under President Goodluck Jonathan for setting petrol prices at ₦87 per liter.

Back in January 2015, the APC argued that the price of petrol should not exceed ₦70 per liter, accusing the then-government of exploiting Nigerians by forcing them to subsidize corruption in the oil sector.

The APC’s statement from 2015, released by Lai Mohammed, described the reduction of the petrol price from ₦97 to ₦87 as mere “tokenism” in light of the significant drop in global crude oil prices.

The party argued that even at ₦87 per liter, Nigerians were overpaying for petrol, subsidizing inefficiencies and corruption in the oil industry.

Now, nearly a decade later, the reality of petrol prices exceeding ₦800 per liter is causing widespread distress, with many citizens questioning the government’s handling of the oil sector and its impact on the economy.

APC at the time stated, “When crude oil was selling at 100 dollars per barrel, the landing cost of PMS without subsidy was 125 Naira per litre. Now that the oil price has crash to about 44 dollars per barrel, landing cost without subsidy is about 65 Naira per litre. The same goes for diesel which should not sell for more than 90 Naira per litre.

“While governments of countries which are not as economically endowed as Nigeria have reduced the pump price of fuel as far back as early January 2015, Nigeria that is the world’s sixth largest producer of oil is just announcing a price slash that is far below those countries.

“Early this year, Zambia slashed the price of petrol by 23 per cent while Tanzania reduced the pump price of the product by 16%. In the US, which until recently was importing crude oil from Nigeria, the price of fuel has fallen for 113 consecutive days as of January 16. Therefore, the 10.3% price slash in Nigeria is too meagre too late.”

Fast forward to 2024, petrol sells for over ₦1000 in some states currently due to scarcity.

you're right he should have continued to subsidize fuel and dollars for you so that our revenue to gdp will move from 96% where he met it to 120% and when the country becomes bankrupt all our creditors will stop borrowing us money come down to Nigeria and start dividing the country and seizing government assets to get back their money.......shey that's what would have made you happy?
After removing subsidy, where is the money saved from subsidy removal
PoliticsFuel Price Hike: We Stand By Our Statement — Nlc Blast Presidency by Bobloco(op): 5:24pm On Sep 04, 2024
WE STAND BY OUR STATEMENT

Our attention has been drawn to the denial credited to the Senior Special Assistant to Mr President on the Print Media, Mr Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.

In the said statement, Abdulaziz was quoted as saying:
“I sat through the two meetings President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had with Labour leaders on minimum. At neither of the meetings was an offer made in exchange of fuel price hike. Ajaero is once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians”.

We find amusing the denial of Abdulaziz. We have since asked ourselves if he is suffering from selective amnesia or attention span deficit.

However, not satisfied with his dubious denial, he elected to take a side dig at Comrade Joe Ajaero as “…once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians”.

Whatever the matter is with Abdulaziz, we stand by our statement. And if Abdulaziz was at those meetings as he claimed, he should be courageous enough to let the world know whether the President gave the labour leaders one hour to meet and resolve to either accept and allow increase or accept N62,000.

Labour leaders instead chose to meet outside the Villa and report in a week. When they came back, they were blunt and rejected the offer.

As for Abdulaziz’s side-dig, he should stop insulting the intelligence of Nigerians as they do not need Comrade Joe Ajaero to know they have been taken for a ride and that life has never been this mean, all due to the policies of government.

We also find it necessary to let Abdulaziz and those who sent him know that Nigerians are entitled to a decent, respectable life free from harassment, intimidation and starvation.

Government may have all the ultimate weapons of coercion, true power resides with the people.

Finally, we are also acutely conscious of the fact that falsehood does not live forever.

So the reason we are in this mess, the reason naira is exchanging at over #1,600 to a dollar today under the Tinubu regime, is because the government has been subsidizing dollars since 2000 to 2023, not because of his calamitous economic policies.
