PoliticsHunger Protest: Why We Are Worried – FG by Bobloco(op):
The federal government has explained why it is bothered about the planned nationwide protest billed to commence on August 1.

Nigerians, many of them young people, have called for demonstrations over soaring costs.

Living costs spiked in Nigeria after President Bola Tinubu ended the fuel subsidy and eased foreign exchange controls after coming to power in May last year.

Inflation hit record levels at 34.19 per cent in June, with food inflation more than 40.87 per cent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Speaking Wednesday in Abuja during a ministerial press briefing, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, said President Bola Tinubu is not against the protest.

Akume said the federal government and President Bola Tinubu have repeatedly asked youths to have a rethink because of dangers associated with protests.

The SGF said: “In 14 months, the administration has recorded tremendous accomplishments that laid the foundation for immediate, medium and long term prosperity of Nigerians.

“We therefore appeal to Nigerians of whatever persuasion, belief, demography, gender and status to shun calls for protest against hunger by prioritising peace and progress.

“For the avoidance of doubts, the government of President Tinubu recognises the right to peaceful protest but circumspection and vigilance should be our watch words.

“The government is wary of the dangers associated with protests that are vulnerable to being hijacked by bandits, insurgents and other criminals. Rather, we request that dialogue should be advanced and we remain open to such.

“Our appeal is that Nigerians should please pursue the path of peace, dialogue and collaboration in addressing the challenges that collectively confront us.

“Please go about your legitimate businesses and avoid actions and/or association that are capable of disturbing the peace of the country.

“Let me reassure you that together, we shall create a Nigeria where peace and stability are not merely aspirations but realities, where economic growth is not just a goal but a tangible outcome, and where the dreams of our people are transformed into a shared national destiny.”

PoliticsKano Mobilisers For August 1 National Protest Reveal Identities, by Bobloco(op): 1:45am On Jul 31, 2024
.........roll out directives

Kano State mobilisers for the nationwide planned protest against bad governance have revealed their identities and rolled out demands and directives for the August 1, 2024, mass action.

At least 13 civil society organisations under the aegis of the Northern Chapter of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), led by Anas Adamu.

At a press conference on Tuesday evening in Kano, the group issued a communiqué declaring its intention to hold the protest as planned.

In the communiqué, the organisers listed their demands to the Nigerian government, which include reducing the pump price of petrol to between N160 and N200, reducing inflation on food, housing and electricity, lowering interest rates, reducing the cost of governance and ending insecurity in the country.

Their demands aside, they declared their intention to stage the protest as planned and issued directives accordingly.

According to the directives in a communiqué, participants should not carry any form of weapon; they should neither attempt to harass anybody nor engage in any form of violence. They are also forbidden from looting people’s property.

“Our protest is peaceful and consistent with rights enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“We call on the people of Kano State and Nigeria at large to come out in their numbers on the 1st of August and exercise their human rights to freely protest against bad governance at all levels of government in the country. And we call on foreign imperial actors to stay out of our domestic affairs.

“Let us ignore all paid agents profiting from the mass sufferings that are now trying to intimidate and persuade us from speaking out and protesting against unjust governance.

“If we do not protest now, how would the government take us seriously? It is time for us to stamp our authority as citizens so that those in power will not continue to take us for granted.

“This August 1 protest is just the first step. It will go on whether or not the powers that be like it,” the communiqué outlined.

The group insisted: “President Tinubu must listen to the voice of the people and change course now before it is too late.”

PoliticsProtest: Organisers Reject IGP’s Proposal For Confined Protest by Bobloco(op): 6:09pm On Jul 30, 2024
The organisers of the planned #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, on Tuesday rejected the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun’s proposal for a confined protests.

Egbetokun had suggested confined protests in identified locations and advised against street rallies during a meeting with the organisers.

According to the IGP: “It is not advisable to go on street processions because as you are planning peaceful protests, some are planning violence.”

However, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, one of the lawyers for the Take It Back Movement, one of the groups organising the nationwide protest, rejected the IGP’s proposal.

Some Nigerians will on August 1 take to the streets to protest over the current hardship in the country.

Despite appeals from the federal and state governments, the organizers have vowed to hit the streets from August 1st to 10th.

PoliticsNdume Rejects New Office At National Assembly by Bobloco(op): 5:45pm On Jul 30, 2024
The senator representing Borno South at the National Assembly, Mohammed Ali Ndume, has rejected a new office allocated to him by the Senate Services Committee.
Ndume, in a letter addressed to the Chairman, Senate Services Committee on Tuesday, said the office given him does not reflect his seniority and high ranking posture at the Senate.
The letter, signed by his Chief Confidential Secretary, Yati Shuaibu Gawu, reads: “I am directed to inform you that, Distinguished Senator Mohammed All Ndume, has rejected the allocation of office number 3.10 by the Committee.
“This is because offices are traditionally allocated on seniority basis.
“Sen Ndume is the most Senior Senator after Sen Ahmad Lawan and will only occupy an office on the fourth floor.”

Recall that Ndume was recently stripped of his position as Chief Whip of the Senate, following his criticisms of the President Bola Tinubu-led government, hence the decision to allocate a new office to him.

PoliticsProtecting Nigerians’ Vital Right To Protest - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op): 10:42pm On Jul 29, 2024
IN a thriving democracy, the right to protest is fundamental. For Nigeria, this right holds profound significance. Therefore, the official opposition to the planned August 1 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest is baseless and counterproductive.

Protests are a vital expression of democratic rights. They allow citizens to voice their opinions, grievances and demands collectively and effectively. In Nigeria, where political and social issues often go unaddressed, protests provide a platform for the discontented to make their voices heard. This active participation is essential for a healthy democracy, ensuring that the government remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of its people.

Between March 2019 and November 2020, a series of demonstrations took place to protest the introduction of a bill to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance regarding extradition. In March, doctors in South Korea demonstrated to protest the government’s plans to increase medical school admissions and what they see as a broader “lack of support for the country’s medical system.” For over two centuries, the French people have periodically protested public policies, particularly plans to privatise government-owned enterprises.

Therefore, protests serve as a powerful check on government power. They remind elected officials and public servants that they are accountable to the people. In a country where corruption and abuse of power are persistent challenges, protests can deter governmental overreach and foster transparency. By allowing protests, Nigeria can strengthen its democratic institutions and promote a culture of accountability.

Nigeria’s history is replete with instances where public demonstrations catalysed significant social and political change. From the pre-independence movements against colonial rule to the more recent #EndSARS to protest police brutality, Nigerians have repeatedly taken to the streets to voice their grievances and demand justice. Notable in that era were the National Association of Nigerian Students, the Nigerian Medical Association, the Nigerian Bar Association, NUPENG, and PENGASSAN. Unfortunately, these organisations have lost their mettle.

The 1999 Constitution, under Section 40, guarantees every citizen the right to assemble freely and associate with others. Despite constitutional guarantees, the right to protest in Nigeria faces significant challenges. The excessive use of force by security agencies, arbitrary arrests, and the stigmatisation of protesters are alarmingly frequent. These actions not only undermine the essence of democratic expression but also instil fear and discourage civic participation.

The aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in 2020 is a stark reminder of these challenges. While the protest initially received widespread support and highlighted critical issues of police reform, the government’s response was marred by violence and repression. The infamous Lekki Toll Gate incident, where security forces shot unarmed protesters, remains a dark chapter in the country’s democratic journey.

Ministers, APC stalwarts, monarchs, religious leaders, and the Presidency have called on the protesters to sheathe their swords. Some traditionalists plan to hold ‘oro’ to counter the protests in Lagos. The Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Department of State Services, and the military high command called for the cancellation of the protest.

Nigerians have been facing unprecedented hardship since President Bola Tinubu cancelled the petrol subsidy in May 2023 and floated the naira the following month.

To safeguard the right to protest, several steps must be taken. Strengthening legal frameworks to protect protesters from arbitrary arrests and violence is imperative.

Contrary to the perception that protests are inherently disruptive, they can be a means of peaceful conflict resolution. When citizens can express their dissent and grievances, it is an opportunity for dialogue and negotiation. Suppressing protests, on the other hand, can lead to frustration and escalate tensions, potentially resulting in more violent outcomes.

A vibrant civil society is crucial for the development and sustainability of any democracy.

As Nigeria evolves, it is essential to protect and cherish this right, ensuring that every Nigerian can raise their voice without fear of retribution.

PoliticsSIM Blockade: Mob Vandalises Telco’s Office At Festac Town by Bobloco(op): 10:33pm On Jul 29, 2024
A mob, on Monday, vandalized a section of mobile telephone network operator, MTN, property in Festac Town, Lagos.

Their actions, according to reports, were triggered after the network provider blocked their SIM cards yesterday.

In a video obtained by Vanguard, customers of MTN were seen protesting to register their displeasure over their SIM blockade.

A handful of youths were then spotted vandalizing a section of the MTN office in Festac Town.

Also, hundreds of customers of MTN in Osun State embarked on a protest around Dada Estate housing the service provider’s head office in the state.

Many of the protesters claimed to have arrived at the office at 6 a.m., with a view to unblocking their SIM cards which the network providers blocked due to NIN inconsistency.

The protesters also blocked the Osogbo-Iwo Road leading to the Oke-Fia area of the state capital, thereby disrupting traffic and creating gridlock in the area.

The customers, consisting of old men, women, pregnant women and others, including civil servants appeared visibly angry over the refusal to be attended to by the workers in the office.
