PoliticsRe: Submit Proposals, Not Protest To Your Government.... by Bobloco: 8:01am On Jul 24, 2024
But Tinubu and his allies never submitted proposals to the Goodluck Jonathan government

Instead, Tinubu and his allies sponsored, funded and organized protests and civil disobedience against the Goodluck Jonathan government even threatened to form a parallel government
PoliticsIn Defence Of Free Speech - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op):
THE removal of Ali Ndume as the Chief Whip of the Senate marks a troubling escalation in the systematic suppression of dissent and free speech. Ndume (Borno South, APC), known for his vocal criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, was removed from his position on July 17.

His ousting was precipitated by his public remarks criticising Tinubu’s leadership and calling attention to the administration’s failings, particularly its handling of the economy. In response, the All Progressives Congress demanded Ndume’s resignation from the party, labelling his comments as “propaganda” and “unbecoming of a member of the APC caucus.”

The swift replacement of Ndume with Tahir Monguno as the CW and the assignment of Ndume to chair the Senate Committee on Tourism underscore the punitive nature of this move.

Ndume did not lie. There is hunger in the land, and the President seems too detached from the people.

In a democratic society, free speech and dissent are not just fundamental rights but are crucial to the health and progress of a country.

The response to Ndume’s ousting has been loud. Labour leaders, activists, and ordinary Nigerians have all condemned the action as a blatant attempt to stifle free speech. They argue that silencing critics, especially those within the government, sets a dangerous precedent. It sends a clear message that dissent is not tolerated, which can have a chilling effect on other lawmakers and the public.

Under Tinubu, the National Assembly, led by Godswill Akpabio (Senate) and Tajudeen Abbas (House of Representatives), has brazenly subjugated itself to the executive, charged with being a ‘rubber stamp’ parliament.

Together, the arms of government have shown a troubling pattern of repressing free speech.

In March, the Senate summarily suspended Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central, PDP) for three months after an interview. Ningi alleged that the 2024 budget was padded with N3.7 trillion for projects without location. Instead of defending itself, the Senate clamped down on Ningi who alleged that the executive paid some ranking senators N500 million each for constituency projects. He was recalled after 77 days.

Journalists, activists, and even ordinary citizens have faced harassment, intimidation, and arrest for expressing dissenting views. The government has often used law enforcement agencies to suppress opposition and silence critics.

Furthermore, the administration has been accused of leveraging law enforcement to stifle protests and demonstrations.

The implications of these actions extend far beyond the corridors of power in Abuja. The suppression of free speech and political dissent threatens the very fabric of democracy. It discourages open debate and critical scrutiny. When elected representatives are punished for speaking out, it sends a chilling message to all Nigerians.

This, in turn, can result in poor governance, corruption, and a gross disconnect between the government and the governed.

This offers further proof that Nigeria’s democracy is unstable. In the 2024 Fragile States Index, the Fund for Peace ranks Nigeria 15th out of 180 countries with a score of 96.6. Norway ranks first with 12.7.

Therefore, the Tinubu administration and the NASS must recommit to upholding democratic values, including the right to free speech and dissent. They should cease the subtle attempts to silence critics. Criticism provides valuable feedback and helps the government improve its policies and governance.

Civil society organisations and the media have a crucial role in holding the government accountable and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard.

Nigerians’ collective responsibility is to defend the principle of free speech and ensure that the country remains a beacon of democracy in Africa. The government must realise that dissent is not a threat but a vital component of a healthy democracy. Only by embracing and respecting diverse opinions can Nigeria truly thrive.

Protests will always remain a legitimate instrument of democracy for raising the voice of citizens.

Go out and protest against this calamitous Tinubu regime that has succeeded in inflicting premium hunger and starvation on the people.

PoliticsBimbola Salu-Hundeyin: Protests Are Not Wrong But shouldn't Turn Violent by Bobloco(op): 7:42am On Jul 24, 2024
Ahead of the planned nationwide protests coming up in August, the Lagos State Government has declared that such demonstrations are within the rights of citizens, saying there is nothing wrong in it.

Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Secretary to the state government stated this on Tuesday while meeting with the Secretaries to the Local Governments, SLGs.

She, however, cautioned the intending protesters to be wary that the protest does not turn violent and destructive.

According to her, even though protests are the citizens’ legitimate right, there is no need to protest in Lagos, stating that the state has done well for its citizens.

She said, “It is a legitimate right for citizens to protest, as there is nothing wrong in it, but people should be wary that it does not turn violent and destructive.

“Lagos State has done so much for its citizens that nobody in the state should stand up and say they are going to break anything.

“Sincerely, and I mean it; it is not because I am the Secretary of the State Government; I speak from my heart and God knows; there is no reason for anybody to cause any protests or riots or violence in Lagos State”.

Have the election losers got over the election loss?

How have they been behaving since the election loss, how many of their threats have been averted?

Should we now do because some people with genuine intentions of protesting and allow the sore election losers to cause chaos and confusion just to fulfill their evil wishes?.

If there is no protest, there won't be any gory story .

Prevention is far better than cure

PoliticsBREAKING: Shelve Planned Protest -Tinubu Begs Nigerians by Bobloco(op):
President Bola Tinubu has appealed to Nigerians to shelve planned protests against bad governance in the country, slated for next month.

The appeal was made known by Information Minister Mohammed Idris, who briefed State House correspondents after a meeting with the President on Tuesday.

Idris said Tinubu urged the organisers of the protest to shelve the plan and await the President’s response to their complaints.

“The issue of the planned protest, Mr President does not see any need for that. He’s asked them to shelve that plan. He’s asked them to await the government’s response to all their pleas,” the minister said.

The protest against economic hardship, which is gaining traction on social media, has been scheduled to hold across all states of the Federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, starting from August 1.

DAILY POST reports that the prices of food and basic commodities have gone through the roof in the last months.

Many Nigerians currently are battling one of the country’s worst inflation and economic crisis sparked by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.

Some of the things Tinubu government has achieved in 14 months that got my attention.

1. The minimum wage has been raised to ₦70,000

2. The Federal Government has initiated and begun payment of student loans.

3. Every state in Nigeria had been getting a minimum of 50% more than they were getting under Buhari, some get more than 100% now.

4. Fuel importation has reduced by 51.4%

5.The Federal Government has initiated and begun payment of the ₦50,000 to more than 1 million people

6. The electricity has improved tremendously.

7. There is a serial development in agriculture in some northern states, Lagos to calabar highway etc.

Let's give him his flowers💐

PoliticsAnti-Government Protest: Pat Utomi Vows To Sue Onanuga For ₦‎500 Billion by Bobloco(op): 2:35am On Jul 23, 2024
A renowned political economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, has threatened a N500 billion lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, over an allegation against him.

DAILY POST recalls that Onanuga accused the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi and his supporters of being behind the planned nationwide protests scheduled for August.

The presidential aide alleged that Utomi and some other supporters of Obi are the organisers of the planned nationwide protests against hunger, naira devaluation and economic hardship in Nigeria.

But in a statement he signed on Monday, Utomi, a chieftain of the Labour Party, denied the allegation, saying he has been away from the country for a long time.

Pat Utomi advised Onanuga to withdraw his statement or provide evidence of his claims.

“If there is no evidence of Mr. Onanuga’s false assertion, I will assume it reasonable that the object is to water the ground for false treasonable felony charges that can result in the claim of one’s life. I intend to therefore proceed to the international criminal and other human rights courts if a reasonable explanation is not forthcoming.

“I will also have no choice but to institute a claim of N500 billion for fake news, hate speech and intent to procure State murder of an innocent citizen. If judicial capture makes justice problematic in Nigeria I expect that I can trust extra-national institutions and global human solidarity,” Utomi said.
