Payday, a neobank issuing global (USD, EUR and GBP) accounts to Africans, has raised $3 million to fuel its “future of work” initiative through borderless payment alternatives in major currencies. The seed round was led by Moniepoint Inc (formerly TeamApt Inc), the U.S. entity that houses Moniepoint Microfinance Bank and TeamApt Nigeria. Techstars, Angels Touch, HoaQ, DFS Lab’s Stellar Africa Fund, Ingressive Capital Fund II and angel investors such as MFS Africa chief Dare Okoudjou and Norebase CEO Tola Onayemi also participated. When Favour Ori launched Payday in June 2021, the initial play was to build PayPal for Africa, for which it secured a million dollars in pre-seed funding. Customers in 11 African countries, including Rwanda, where it first established its headquarters due to its business-friendly environment, had access to the platform and could send money to each other. Subsequently, the fintech, which became the first Rwandan company to join Techstars (Toronto program) and soon raised a $1.2 million pre-seed extension, learned that enabling cross-border payments was expensive despite. As such, it shut down nine corridors and focused on Nigeria, where it has since witnessed tremendous transaction volume and user growth. With Payday, African remote workers and freelancers, particularly in Nigeria and Rwanda, can send and receive money in USD, GBP, EUR and 20 other currencies. This allows them and those in the diaspora who work remotely for international organizations to be paid and withdraw money in their choice of currency. Payday also offers virtual dollar and naira cards (which allow Nigerian users to purchase goods and services on foreign platforms), currency swaps, payment links, local bill payments and peer-to-peer transfers. “We were the first startup to start issuing virtual accounts in Africa around June 2021, and we’ve done this for over 20 months, so we know what works and understand our market and users.” Payday ramped up its social media marketing push over the last few months to increase market share, which seems to be paying off. The fintech ended 2022 with slightly over 100,000 users, and now offers its virtual cards and other products to more than 300,000 users. Payday also processes an average of 40,000 transactions daily and over $25 million monthly, numbers that have fetched the fintech a $15 million acquisition offer by one of the continent’s unicorns, which, Ori says, was turned down.

By Olusegun Adegoke When Abraham Lincoln declared that he was running for the Office of the President of the United States of America in 1860, his decision was seen by many as yet another opportunity for him to taste defeat. This was a man, who before that time had lost eight elections, failed twice in business, and suffered a nervous breakdown and a series of other incalculable misfortunes. Yet for some reason, Lincoln went on to win the election in 1861, rising above four other strong contenders who vied for the same position. His reforms were socially progressive such that only a handful of American presidents in the frame of George Washington and Franklin Roosevelt can be ranked close enough to him in terms of achievements. And for over two centuries, Lincoln has been arguably touted as America’s greatest President, and in generic political folklore, he is considered the most progressively persistent statesman that ever lived. When linked to Nigeria’s contemporary political experience, Atiku Abubakar’s journey to becoming Nigeria’s President resonates more with Lincoln’s attributes of persistence in politics. This is largely evident in the fact that on five occasions, Nigeria’s topmost job has eluded Atiku’s grip, and for some reason, he is still pushing hard to achieve the Holy Grail. This should tell Nigerians something. A student of the prestigious Shehu Yar’Adua political school of thought, Atiku understands the depth, plight, and hue and color of the Nigerian problem. Over time, he has demonstrated this understanding through his expansive distribution of goodwill and public goods. Since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, no Vice President in the country has impacted social development like Atiku. During this period, he anchored the economic team that paid Nigeria’s debt and played a huge role in the reformation of the telecommunications and banking sectors. Atiku singlehandedly attracted the best technocrats such as Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and Oby Ezekwesili into the Obasanjo’s government to drive developmental strides. As a viable businessman, the former vice president, for over three decades, has created over 50,000 jobs for Nigerians. His penchant for quality education primed him to establish the American University in Yola, the capital of his home State—Adamawa. It is a well-known fact that not many politicians in the country, past or present has contributed more to human and social development than Atiku Abubakar. The thing about Atiku is that he exemplifies in full stretch what Nigerians need from a President. His experience spans over thirty years of utmost dedication in public service. His cosmopolitan mindset more than anything else augurs well for a multicultural society like ours. From having a kid whom he gave an Igbo name—Ifeanyi and another with a Yoruba name, Bukola. Atiku is not an ethnic bigot like most Nigerian politicians. And no contemporary statesman is as popular as he is, considering that he is very well known in as many local and small towns such as Kantagora, Arochukwu, Obanliku, Ilara to state a few. It is this liberal-mindedness among other things that sets Atiku apart from fellow presidential candidates such as Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu. The case of Ahmed Bola Tinubu brings on board a whole different dynamic that points to political ruins. His penchant for greed and physical inabilities to manage governmental affairs poses a great challenge. The former Lagos state governor is alleged to be chronically ill from an undisclosed ailment that may incapacitate his performance if elected. His demonstrable incapacity in delivering concise speeches blended with numerous gaffes in his ongoing campaigns have led experts to suggest that the APC leader may be suffering from dementia. Tinubu’s challenge of a clean bill of health is reminiscent of the Buhari’s experience seven years ago—one where Nigerians voted in a President that largely underwhelmed, partly as a result of his ailing health. But Tinubu’s political malfeasances are way beyond health concerns. He is largely viewed as corrupt and tyrannical with the Lagos state examples in plain sight. Allegedly, he continues to come under fire for milking Lagos State dry and putting the State in an appalling shape as a result of bad debt to the tune of trillions of naira. Tinubu has also been largely accused of constantly imposing his minions to run every affair of the State since the end of his tenure as Governor—a vice many find disturbing and undemocratic in the quest for a progressive Nigeria. Hence, his political strategy will arguably point towards subjecting Nigeria under his tyrannical control. While Peter Obi, for instance, is in a way considered a strong contender for the 2023 presidential election, the fact remains that the former Anambra State governor lacks the needed national appeal to become Nigeria’s next president. Obi was nothing close to being a great governor in Anambra State as many of his gullible supporters keep suggesting. The revelations made by the current governor of the state, Charles Soludo lends credence here. While Obi keeps enjoying the frenzy of massive social media supports from a cross section of young Nigerians, the realities on the ground suggests that he will come a distant third position in the impending presidential poll. An Atiku presidency beckons on the horizon, and the mood in the polity confounds to this imminent truth. Beyond anything, he is a far better political choice for the soul of Nigeria compare to the Peter Obi & Bola Tinubu. Like Abraham Lincoln who transformed America’s fate for the better from a deeply tumultuous state, Atiku appears similarly duty-bound to recover Nigeria from the shambles of past political misdeeds. It took persistence for Abraham Lincoln to get to the position of the President where he had the power to end slavery in America, having created civil and social freedom for African Americans. And contemporarily, it is the same nature of persistence we find in Atiku, the kind that will emancipate Nigerians from the shackles of suffering and bad governance. This is why Nigerians should vote for Atiku Abubakar as President in the coming weeks. nlfpmod, Mynd44, mukina2, dominique, Seun https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/02/atiku-is-on-the-verge-of-becoming-nigerias-abraham-lincoln/

By Walero Ajiwo With the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, having conducted its primaries, all eyes are now shifted to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to tow a different part and not allow money and “dollars” become the determining factor of who becomes the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2023 presidential election. The delegates, whether statutory delegates or ad hoc delegates are the ones who will elect the presidential candidate of the APC in a few days. With the screening of APC presidential aspirants finally concluded, upon the delegates lie a burden to rescue Nigeria from decadence by shunning money politics and dissuading any attempts at dollarization of our national conscience. The quest to produce the next president for Nigeria has brought to the fore an unavoidable debate about the need to elect a credible and upright president, someone with integrity, and the moral capacity to serve in the interest of Nigeria, not motivated by personal interest and gain. Since independence, Nigeria has been exploited by corrupt leaders, and politicians who have frittered away the country’s immense wealth and hindered growth and development. This is why the 2023 election is another pivotal milestone in the course of Nigeria’s developmental journey. What can be certain is that the decision made in selecting the next president will have serious repercussions for the nation’s development in the decade ahead. For this reason, it is expedient to appeal to the delegates who are the key players in the party’s primary election stage to think of Nigeria first and not allow short terms gain sabotage our collective future. President, Muhammadu Buhari made a strong appeal last week, asking the APC Governors to allow him to have a say in choosing his successor. While some misinterpreted that plea as being self-serving, it is important to underscore that the president’s request is borne out of a desire to preserve what is left of the integrity of Nigeria’s leadership. President Buhari may be the last trustworthy leader with integrity if care is not taken in electing who will succeed him. This is so important given that some of those hardline presidential aspirants have the running perception of lack of integrity and corruption allegations hanging over them. Therefore, it is important to look objectively at the request of the president. It may sound selfish that he wants to have a choice of his successor, but as a delegate, it is a duty to the nation to look at the quality of leadership that will be bestowed on Nigeria after president Buhari leaves office. Delegates, should consider these following important issues before casting their all important votes. The emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the flag bearer of the PDP has changed the dynamic and requires APC to put forward a candidate of sound integrity and without any baggage of corruption allegations. That is the only way to differentiate and have a strong selling argument. Secondly, it is important to give priority to unifying the country by supporting a southern presidential candidate that is energetic and dynamic and who is not bugged by health challenges. Thirdly, it is important to select someone who is within the framework of the succession plan of President Buhari who himself has made enormous sacrifices to sustain Nigeria’s fragile democracy. It is also critical as a delegate to discern red flags such as the self-entitled mentality of some of the aspirants. Countries are not built by the patronage of personal interests but by giving priority to the national good and the people’s aspirations. President Buhari has shown a shining example in his demonstration of loyalty to the nation above personal aggrandizement. Therefore, it is our collective duty, delegates included, to place the country above pecuniary interest and self-serving ambitions. One thing is sure, Nigeria is not for sale and cannot be given away to the highest bidders, like an unwilling bride. Another important consideration should be the urgent need to protect the internal cohesion and democracy of party and country from moneybag dictatorship. Money is not everything, but the preservation of our country is an existential imperative and a key legacy we must bequeath to future generations. In all of these, one person stands out that has the competence required and the moral and cerebral capacity to move Nigeria forward. Vice president Yemi Osinbajo has served meritoriously with president Buhari for the past seven years without blemish and or rancor. The vice president has undertaken numerous national assignments with the highest degree of merit and accomplishment and has demonstrated a passion for the nation above personal interest. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo stands solidly in the gap to preserve the legacy of President Buhari’s leadership achievements and move Nigeria in a new direction of national growth. Vice president Osinbajo is a stable character, trustworthy, and can fulfill most of the expectations, be it generational – integrating the youths into leadership, preservation of national ethos, the culture of excellence in leadership, ticking the moral box, and fulfilling the political expectations both in terms of being a unifier and achiever with a solid track record of public service. lalasticlala Mynd44 Seun https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/06/if-i-were-a-delegate-voting-for-the-future-of-nigeria/

By Walero Ajiwo In choosing Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as its presidential flag bearer last weekend, the. People's Democratic Party (PDP) flagrantly repudiated its rotational system by giving its ticket to the highest spender, thereby humiliating its members from Southern Nigeria. This decision casts a further slur on the credibility of the party that once, as a ruling party, shared billions of naira to its cronies through the office of the National Security Adviser like sachets of water during a local birthday party celebration. Moreover, not a few Nigerians still remember that Atiku's integrity was shredded into pieces by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his book, My Watch. Atiku has also been enmeshed in several scandalous cases, even when he was Vice President. Till date, Atiku has not successfully absolved himself from the scandalous PTDF and the Jefferson cases respectively. Unfortunately, the exit of Peter Obi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) unequivocally put an end to the credibility of the primaries elections of PDP last weekend in Abuja. In Obi’s exit, PDP lost a decent candidate by using money politics to push the articulate politician out of the leading opposition party in Nigeria. Obi is now the presidential flag bearer of the Labour Party. Winning the 2023 presidential elections in Nigeria has come down to a credibility issue. There is no doubt that President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) has laboured in the last seven years rebuilding the nation from the ruins left by the PDP under the leadership of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2015. PMB needs global credibility after he leaves office as the President who laid the foundation for the infrastructural development of a new Nigeria where the needs of the masses are met. If no credible leader succeeds PMB then all his efforts in the last seven years will be a waste. This is why he himself, in his recent address to APC Governors and strategic stakeholders, pleaded to be allowed to choose his successor for continuity. The most credible presidential aspirant who can guarantee continuity of the infrastructural development initiatives of PMB is someone who has been part of the herculean process. Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria's immediate past Minister of Transportation and presidential aspirant on the platform of APC, strove very hard to pass the buck to PMB and his team when bandits attacked a Kaduna bound train from Abuja, killed some people and abducted many people in the process. The lack of character to take responsibility for a crisis within his remit or even proffer tenable path forward shows such a turncoat cannot be trusted to continue a laudable national infrastructural development project. For PMB to truly preserve his legacy and shine in retirement, his successor must be a honest, loyal and visionary leader who understands Nigerians and is passionate about growth, fairness and unity. The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, perfectly fits the bill. He can effortlessly improve on the foundation laid by PMB. An Osinbajo presidency will clearly put PMB on the global stage as the architect of modern Nigeria. Moreover Osinbajo’s track record as reasonable technocrat that is up-to-the-moment with global developmental trends would greatly boost the confidence of the global community that Nigeria is on track to effectively addressing her complex economic challenges. PMB needs Osinbajo to guarantee that the vision of a greater Nigeria where everyone and everything works is fulfilled. I agree with the writer who said that an Osinbajo Presidency will make PMB proud to the extent that he can boast in future that “...we had a plan and President Yemi Osinbajo finished it!” The same cannot be said of the other APC presidential aspirant, former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who has assumed the self defeating habit of attacking the policies and actions of the PMB administration in full media glare. The most recent outburst by Tinubu at a public gathering in Ogun State potentially seals his fate for a glaring lack of decorum. Referring to a serving Governor as “this one sitting behind me” then going on to serenade his audience about how PMB repeatedly failed in his presidential pursuits until he came to his rescue speaks to the arrogant, and haughty temperament that has unmasked Tinubu’s brutally bruised ego and sense of entitlement as the mini-god of the APC and indeed Nigerian politics. The truth is no one is important enough to tell the king he became one through him, and expects to be relevant within the equation of power. Despite what his spin doctors will want us to believe Tinubu’s candidacy is simply deficient to deliver victory to the APC for the following logical facts. Just as in 2014 when he was declined the Vice President slot, it is simply untenable for APC to field a Southern President and Northern Vice President who are both muslims. Morevoer fielding a Northern Christian as a Vice President from a region where the majority are muslims would also be seen as an injustice and place the APC at a significant disadvantage. Given the Atiku factor, it behoves APC to go for a Southern Christian Presidential Candidate that would mop up the votes from the South and also slot in a strong Northern Muslim as Vice President that would considerably deplete Atiku’s votes in the North. The Northern votes are expected to also be further depleted by Kwankwaso’s bid for the presidency along with Atiku. In this regard, Osinbajos growing crossover appeal among large swarths of the Nigerian population, from popularity with traditional rulers to his affinity with the teeming youths who make up over 60% of the population places him at a strong advantage. Even polls conducted by platforms favourable to Tinubu gave ominous verdicts regarding Tinubu’s prospects. In a now deleted post on the twitter handle of TVC (owned by Tinubu) Osinbajo trounced Tinubu as the most formidable Presidential aspirant for the 2023 presidential elections. This was the outcome of a poll conducted by TVC on Wednesday June 1, 2022 with the theme, “Now that Atiku has emerged as PDP presidential candidate, who should the APC field as their flag bearer?” Out of 1,721 people who voted in the poll, Osinbajo led with 43% of votes cast, followed by Tinubu with 40%, Amaechi with 8%, and Lawan with 9% of the total votes cast. It is increasingly clear that Osinbajo looms large as the candidate that has struck a cord with the people. Osinbajo is an acknowledged servant leader whose pedigree, experience and recent performances are not shrouded in mystery. If APC delegates and stakeholders truly want to defeat PDP and its desperate and hugely tainted flag bearer, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, during the 2023 presidential general elections, APC must choose a decent aspirant. Only Osinbajo has the intellect, integrity and inner drive to defeat Atiku in the 2023 Presidential elections. He is the last credible man standing among the presidential aspirants in APC. All APC stakeholders and delegates must vote for Osinbajo this weekend as the party’s presidential flag bearer. This move will be the only guarantee of the continuity of APC as Nigeria's ruling party from May 29, 2023. It will be a vote for consolidating our infrastructural development and ensuring our prosperity as a united and productive nation. • Dr.Walero Ajiwo is a Productivity Consultant Lalasticlala Mynd44 Seun https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/06/apc-primaries-last-credible-man-standing/

Budding music star, shizem has released an Afrobeats song dubbed, "No Body". The mid-tempo groove is a blend of modern Afrobeat rhythm and soothing eulogies. Born in Lagos state Nigeria, Denzel Oluwafemi Adeniyi aka "Shizem" is a New York-based Nigerian afro fusion singer, songwriter, performer, dancer and filmmaker. He is passionate about music and promoting the rich African rhythm through creative sounds and inspiring messaging. No body is Shizem's second official single for the year after dropping 'assignment' earlier in March. He went viral online in 2021 for his hit song featuring popular Nigerian highlife singer, Flavour N'abania, demonstrating his vocal prowess, musical versatility and unique creativity. In a preview of the song with vanguard, the artist observed that the lyrics combine raw everyday Nigerian Pidgin English with subtle metaphors that descriptively tell how he is madly in love with the body of a sexy lady, adding originality and a distinct flow and sound to the beat. Mr Akeju, a director at Prime Music Partners, the mainstream media distributors of the new song heaped praise on the artist tagging him "The new face of Afrobeats sounds". Shizem hopes his new release will serve as springboard to further project him on the global music scene. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/04/shizem-releases-new-hit-song-no-body/
