Students of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, have appealed to the state command of the Nigeria Police Force, as well as the Ogun State government to rescue them from what they described as ‘incessant attack’ by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.

The students, most of whom live off the campus said they are no longer safe due to the rate at which the robbers attack them at night.

For them, going to bed at night has become very dangerous, to fear that the armed robbers may pay them an unscheduled visit.

Vanguard reliably gathered that some female students have been raped by the armed robbers, who also make away with their phones, laptops, money, and other valuables, including foodstuffs.

One of the students, who spoke with Vanguard under the condition of anonymity said, “on Saturday night, these gunmen struck again, they broke into buildings to rob. They fired shots, broke the burglar-proof to gain entrance into buildings”.

“One of the students was hit by a bullet in the eye. They raped female students and made away with their valuables. We are crying out for help. We have been on this for over a week now”.

“Nobody is doing anything about it. Some of our girls were raped, houses were destroyed. We don’t know what is happening. Nigerians should come to our aid”.

Our correspondent gathered that a number of the students have fled the school environment for their various homes as there seems to be no help in sight.

It was learnt that landlords in students-dominated areas in Ilaro met on April 12 to take some decisions on the security exigencies in the city.

“At the end of the meeting, it was resolved that all Community Development Associations (CDAs) in Ilaro must hire night guards and students must obtain tenancy forms”.

While begging the polytechnic to assist the police with a siren, movement is restricted from 11 pm to 4 am.
But, the students said nothing has changed since the meeting with the landlords.

A planned protest by the students was reportedly stopped by the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI).
However, in spite of the outcry and social media posts, the Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Sola Abiola, said he was not aware of the incidents.

When contacted, the Special Assistant to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Students’ Matters, Azeez Adeyemi, confirmed the incident; saying, however, that he could not substantiate the claims of rape.
According to Adeyemi, the state government is making all efforts to nip the crisis in the bud, adding that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is working to stop the attack on students of Ilaro polytechnic.

He disclosed that there would be a meeting with the Ogun Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, to find a lasting solution to the problem.

“We are not leaving any stone unturned to put an end to the matter. We are on it already. NANS is also on it. We are equally meeting with the CP. So, we are on top of the matter.”

Suspected herdsmen went on a rampage, weekend, in two Ondo communities, Ondo State, killing a commercial driver, identified as Toyin Mala and macheting a 77-year-old farmer, Benjamin Babatunde.

Vanguard gathered that the driver was shot dead at Ajowa community in Akoko North West area of the state while returning from Abuja.

A source said: “Toyin was from Abuja and on getting to Ago Jinadu he met the bandits and in an attempt to reverse, he was gunned down, while two passengers escaped and the whereabouts of others are unknown.”

The killing of the driver was confirmed by the Divisional Police Officer of Okeagbe-Akoko, Paulinus Onnah.

Onnah said security agents who visited the scene of the incident have evacuated the corpse.

The septuagenarian farmer was attacked on his farm in Ikakumo, a border town in Akoko North-East council area of the state.

Vanguard gathered that the 77-year-old farmer was macheted by the herdsmen, who invaded his farm, demanding money. He was left to bleed to death by his attackers.
A community leader in Northern senatorial district told Vanguard: “Within a month this year, two incidents of herders-farmers bloody clashes had happened in the agrarian community of Ikakumo, a border town in Akoko North East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

“The latest is Mr Benjamin Babatunde, a 77-year-old farmer, who was badly macheted by bandits in Ikakumo Akoko.

“The victim was on his farm when the bandits approached, demanding money and the farmer said he had no money on the farm, the next thing was that they macheted him with their daggers. They left him in the pool of his blood thinking he would die.”

Contacted, the Police Area Commander, Muri Agbola, confirmed the case, saying investigation was on to unravel and arrest the bandits.

The rate of violence in marriages these days is alarming. Many people, getting married for the wrong reasons.

Getting married is not nearly as important as the marriage itself o. People got to be more careful about rushing into marriage.

A housewife, Iyanu Ojo, is lying critically ill at the Owo General Hospital, in Ondo State, after her husband, Oluwaseun Ojo, reportedly bathed her with hot water after a fracas.

The couple reportedly had a disagreement and the husband went to the kitchen to boil water after which he poured it on her.

An eyewitness said the husband after committing the crime left the house while the wife wriggled in pain, crying for help. She was reportedly rushed to the general hospital in the town where she was treated and admitted.

The state police image maker, Funmi Odunlami, said the matter was not reported at the Owo Divisional Police station.

Reacting, to the ugly incident, the wife of the state governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, vowed to get justice for the victim.

Akeredolu, who described the incident as bestial and intolerable, said it was a shameful act that could not be justified under any guise. Speaking through the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media and Archives in a statement, Debo Akinbami, Akeredolu said individuals who indulged in such heinous conduct under whatever pretext do not deserve to dwell among humans.

She said: “The spate of spousal violence in the country is disturbing and regrettable. It is recurring and requires sterner actions.

“The narrative is both sad and sour. We cannot continue like this and just cannot afford inertia. Women should, at once, accept the fact that it is foolhardy to indulge abusive spouses to the detriment of one’s mental and physical health.

“Why die in an abusive marriage? Women should speak up against abuse and possibly walk out of deleterious relationships.”

Akeredolu, who said the Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence is already involved in the handling of the case, assured that justice will be served.

She added: “Let me restate it unequivocally that Ondo State will not be a haven to abusers, irrespective of who is involved. In this instance, the Ondo State Agency Against Gender-Based Violence (OSA- GBV) is already involved in the handling of the matter, and I can assure you that justice will surely be served.”
