The Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Osun State University has called on Governor Rauf Aregbesola to sack the governing council of the university. The ASUU said this in a communiqué obtained by our correspondent on Monday. The union Chairman, Dr. Oluseye Abiona; Vice-Chairman, Abanikanda M.O; Secretary, Olaosebikan Wende; Financial Secretary, Banwo Alabi, and the Legal Adviser, Adeniyi Nasir, signed the communiqué. The union held a congress last Thursday at the university to debunk the allegation by the council that the Vice-Chancellor of UNIOSUN, Prof. Basir Okesina, was using ASUU chairman to attack the council. The union said Abiona was not pursuing any selfish agenda nor was the VC using him. The report read, “To say that ASUU chairman is pursuing personal interest is a manifestation of mischief or malice and a calculated attempt to divide our union. ASUU is a union of intellects, which cannot be used for pursuing personal agenda. Anybody who thinks along this direction is indeed out of tune with university administration of modern days. “It is also very strange to read that the Prof. Gabriel Olawoyin-led Governing Council accused Dr. Abiona and others yet to be named as agents being used to perpetrate the culture of corruption when the council itself is an embodiment of fraud. “We use this medium to call on Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Visitor to the university to caution the governing council or get them removed if they have nothing to offer the university.” The ASUU and the Council have been at loggerheads over the allegation that the latter cancelled some academic courses, including part- time and postgraduate programmes run in the university. Zambian President Michael Sata, who was nicknamed “King Cobra” for his fiery tongue and larger- than-life personality, has died, the country’s national radio said Wednesday morning. He was 77. Officials did not disclose a cause of death. But Sata had traveled to London for unspecified medical treatment last week. He died in a hospital there Tuesday evening, the government- owned Zambia Daily Mail said. Sata took office in September 2011 after the incumbent President tearfully conceded in a televised speech, a rare moment in a continent known for volatile elections and leaders fighting their defeat tooth-and- nail. Analysts hailed his election as an example of an African nation with a vibrant democracy. But not too long after he took office, speculation swirled over his lack of visibility — which especially stood out for a man who loves the spotlight. Aides said his absence was a result of private international visits, and maintained those trips had nothing to do with medical treatment. Sata was born in the Zambian town of Mpika in 1936, and worked as police officer during the colonial administration. He later trained as a pilot in Russia before returning home and helping develop housing projects in the nation. During Zambia’s struggle for independence from Britain, he jumped into politics, and later founded the Patriotic Front — then an opposition party. His campaign events electrified crowds drawn to his extroverted nature and fight for the average man. Sata, who narrowly lost to his predecessor Rupiah Banda in 2008, was a major critic of Chinese investment in the nation’s copper industry. He especially targeted foreign companies that mistreat Zambian workers, making him popular among the nation’s miners who accused the Chinese of deplorable work conditions. While in office, he warned foreign companies that while their investment is crucial to his nation, they must abide by the labor laws. The veteran politician has served in other positions, including city council, member of parliament and cabinet minister for local government. Before his election, the tiny, copper-rich nation in southern Africa had been ruled by the same party for decades |
The former Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Monday, challenged the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to a debate on corruption. Wike, who accused Amaechi of being corrupt, vowed that the governor must account for any fraudulent act while in government. The ex-minister, who was the chief of staff to Amaechi in the past, vowed to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress in the state. Speaking when he visited the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, Wike explained that he had what it would take to unseat the APC in the forthcoming election. He said, “I’ve come to formally inform you, members of the State Working Committee and leaders of our great party of my ambition to vie for the 2015 governorship of our state on the platform of the PDP. “As you have heard, it was for this purpose I resigned as a member of the Federal Executive Council and I believe that without you, no success can be made. “I also have come to ask for permission to visit each of the 23 local government areas of the State with my team. I had to inform you before I proceed on such visit to ensure that we achieve our dream.” He, however, warned against election of delegates that would betray the party at the forthcoming congresses. |

*** Aregbesola Seek Election Re-run As Election Result Drop To 206,344! *** Omisore Ask Tribunal To Declare Him Winner As Election Results Jump To 308,299! *** Fatai Akinbade Of LP Sit On The Fence As The Tribunal Commence Hearing In Earnest. As the Osun election tribunal adjourned sitting till 30th of October, the outgoing governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is now in dilemma over the likely outcome of the tribunal judgement as he is currently packing his load luggages out of the Osun state government house to pave way for the next incoming governor of the state. It is of no doubt that history will surely repeat itself as the inspection and re- counting of ballot papers used for the election showcase over one hundred thousand invalid vote that was injected by Aregbesola and his evil agent at the INEC to manipulate election results. How can someone who claimed to be virtuous in nature engage himself in election rigmarole by taking a long walk for pleasure in almost 20LG where thumb printed ballot papers from Ekiti state in favour of Aregbesola/APC were discovered in local government like Osogbo, Olorunda, Ejigbo, Ede North, Irewole, Ila-orogun, Irepodun and others he claimed he won |

The Northern Delegates’ Forum at the National Conference has said the proposals by the Committee on Devolution of Power on the ownership and control of Nigeria’s mineral resources may split the country. The forum said it was opposed to some of the proposals to protect the unity of the country. The conference had witnessed rowdy sessions due to deep divisions among delegates on some proposals by the committee. The rowdy session at the conference on Thursday had forced the chairman, Justice Idris Kutigi, to adjourn plenary abruptly till Monday. Speaking to our correspondent on Friday in an interview, a former National Publicity Secretary for the Arewa Consultative Forum and spokesperson for the forum, Mr. Anthony Sani, stated that the deep divisions between the northern and southern delegates on resource control were based on their opposing views on how best to govern Nigeria. The NDF’s spokesperson said, “The North believes resource control or ownership by constituent parts of the country would make the centre weak and tilt the country towards a confederal arrangement — a harbinger for split. “The South is not bothered by such a notion, preferring, instead, that the federating units be allowed to develop at their own pace without minding whether some sections live on the cutting edge, while others live on the knife edge of survival. “That is to say, it does not matter to such school of thought if Nigerians live as if they are on different continents.” |
Hopes for a truce between the Adamawa State House of Assembly and Governor Murtala Nyako, dimmed on Saturday following the insistence of Adamawa Peoples Democratic Party’s stakeholders on the governor’s removal. The small but powerful group, which comprises leaders and elders of the state chapter of the party, has insisted that nothing short of Nyako leaving office will be acceptable. The Special Adviser to the Adamawa State Governor, Mr. Phineas Elisha, confirmed this in an interview with journalists in Yola on Saturday. He said all the efforts to resolve the crises were being truncated by the PDP stakeholders, who were bent on removing Governor Murtala Nyako, through illegalities. Elisha explained that the desperation showed by the group was such that they had issued open threats to PDP legislators in the House to ensure that the impeachment sails through or risk sanctions. He said “The whole impeachment move is being staged-managed by the so-called Adamawa PDP stakeholders who are trying to draw President Goodluck Jonathan into a thing he knew nothing of.” According to him, the governor is not deterred as he has embarked on another peace mission to Abuja where he plans to meet with his accusers to resolve the stalemate for peace to reign in Abuja. Meanwhile, the fate of the embattled Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako and his deputy, Bala Ngilari, now hangs in the balance. |
Jide Awe, Chairman, All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State, in this interview with FISAYO FALODI and KAMORUDEEN OGUNDELE, says the governorship election won by Ayo Fayose in Ekiti State was far from free and fair After the June 21 election, there was insinuation that Governor Kayode Fayemi lost the election because he was far from the grass roots. Do you agree? You have called it insinuation. Insinuation may be an opinion expressed, which is not a fact. The fact of the matter is that we have served the Ekiti people within the last three and half years to the best of our knowledge. And service is multi- dimensional. We believe sincerely that we have done our bit. I want to believe that our best may not be good enough. We don’t want army siege to continue in Ekiti, that was one of the reasons the governor went on air to congratulate the so- called winner. Again, if what the people are saying is that people should be eating corn and boli and epa on the street, I think some of us are cultured and have a background which is not synonymous with Ayo Fayose’s brand of hooliganism. The governorship seat has its own etiquette and it is not good to throw norms and ethics to the winds because you want to gain position. As I have said, to the best of our knowledge, we have served the people. So, why did Fayemi concede defeat? Why not? Fayose challenged Fayemi that he did not construct any road from the start to the finish, is it true? You can see for yourself. But Fayose said that all the roads Fayemi rehabilitated were built by him. That was Fayose’s opinion, which is different from the fact. That was why I said opinions are free. According to Kayode Fayemi, opinions are free; facts are sacred. Do you mean Fayose is lying? Facts are sacred. You are journalists. Go and start from the boundaries between Ondo and Ekiti states; and Igbara-Ode down to Ado-Ekiti and from Ikere end of the road to Ado- Ekiti or you go from Ikole to Iluomoba down to Ijan or you move from Erijinyan to Ilawe, then from Ilawe to Ado-Ekiti and you go farther to the township roads in Ado-Ekiti, if these are constructed from start to the finish, then you can judge. Whatever pleases anybody, he can open his mouth and say it. We knew what the roads were when we came in and we know what they are now. One of the claims by the incoming governor was that Fayemi did not start the construction of any road and that he only built on the existing roads. I know that the road that comes from Lagos to Ibadan was constructed in 1977, I don’t know of any other road if you want to reach Lagos from Ibadan. It has been constructed by succeeding governments. The road from Abuja to Kaduna is still the road. Fayose said Ekiti was eighth position in public examinations before he left office, having brought it from 34th position. Is it true that the standard of education fell under Fayemi’s administration? The Ministry of Education will answer that question. But we knew when we came on board that the educational standard of Ekiti was at the lowest ebb. The conduct of West African Examination Council’s Senior Secondary Certificate Examination became terrible when people would come from neighbouring states and hibernate in Ekiti for two weeks and at the end of the day got results. We knew when groundnut vendors would be selling WAEC question papers, that was the situation we met in Ekiti State. So, the Ministry of Education is in a position to give data. What we know is that we have upgraded the standard from 22 per cent to 75 per cent. It is not a joke. Ordinary eyes cannot see some of these things we are talking about unless through serious research. And you cannot give what you don’t have. What is the educational pedigree of the person talking? So, that is rostrum talk; when somebody mounts the rostrum and starts talking, he may be expressing his opinion because some of the statements may not be factual, that is what we are saying. Is it not strange that someone who claimed to have performed well was rejected by the people at the poll? It is not his claim. Performance is in the court of the people. It is not Fayemi’s claim that he had performed well. It is what the people are saying. If you have been coming to Ekiti State in the last seven years, you would be able to see the difference between what existed and what now exists. So, it is not Fayemi’s claim that he had performed well. So why was he rejected by the people through their voting? That is election; it is politics. What is sauce for the geese may not be sauce for the gander. So, that is why we have choice to make. Shortly after the election, some people accused Fayose of inducing voters with rice, but Fayose said later that APC, your party, also shared cooked rice to seek voters’ support. What is your reaction to this? Cooked rice? The issue of rice or no rice, I believe, should have been forgotten by now. We are looking at the substance. You are looking at the surface rather, you don’t look at the depth. So, if you are now making rice an issue in an election period, it stands logic on its head. And to me, it is very debasing that 21st century Ekiti man queues up for rice and it becomes an issue in an election. It gives me concern as an Ekiti man and at the same time calls for questioning. If you are talking of pounded yam, then we believe that it is Ekiti’s favourite. If Governor Fayemi has conceded defeat to Fayose, why is APC still going to court? It is very noble in this part of the world that somebody will concede defeat. The APC is saying that there are some things it wants to unravel. And I made a statement in an advertorial that parts of the landmines that had been planted for 2015 general elections were detonated in Ekiti, which I called a very bad experiment. In a situation where you put the whole state under siege two weeks before the election, you militarised the whole place, even with dogs and horses. Election cannot be a war more than what we experienced in Ekiti State in the name of election. So, I believe some of these things, other than the result of the election, need to be questioned not because of now but for the future. In a situation where you mobilised soldiers from their barracks to intimidate, to hijack, to suppress and to arrest innocent citizens 72 hours before the election, that is an aberration and strange to democracy. You cannot continue to use soldiers to suppress democracy and expect democracy to grow. These are some of the things the leadership of APC said they are going to examine. Two weeks earlier or a week before the election, we cried out that ballot papers were brought to Ekiti and were being thumbprinted in the compound of the Director- General of Fayose’s Campaign Group, Chief Anisulowo, and two people were arrested in the process and taken to Abuja, we have not heard anything about them. Three weeks to the election, a lorry load of materials was seized at Efon-Alaaye and brought back to Ado-Ekiti, but INEC said they were used materials meant for disposal. At the end of the day, 3,000 ink pads meant for the 2014 Ekiti State election were found in the lorry. That is under investigation and at the same time, the type of ink brought for the election was vanishing ink, because the real ink meant for the election had been removed from the INEC store under the guise of taking away disposable materials. When you put all these together, they are meant to be questioned. The Yoruba will say that a hunter who sacrifices a big game to Ogun is doing so because of the future. There are allegations that contracts awarded by Fayemi were paybacks to his godfathers, is it true? Well, I am not in a position to know which contracts were awarded. I am the party chairman, I am not a part of the contract awarding committee but to the best of my knowledge, all the works we have done; the construction of roads, the renovation of schools, various vehicles bought for traditional rulers and Iya-loja and some other projects are ongoing, must be executed by human beings. So, whoever the contracts were awarded to must have fixed addresses because there is a Bureau of Public Procurement and due process in Ekiti State and if contracts were awarded without due process, they could be subjected to investigation, even while the governor is in office or immediately after he leaves office. Fayose described former Governor Segun Oni as korofo (empty shell) because he could not deliver his local government. Do you agree with this? What Fayose has seen to have increased his ego will soon be opened to the public by calling a former occupant of governorship seat all sorts of names. What has inflated his ego will soon be blown open, I won’t say more than that. What is your reaction to a claim that Fayemi’s Chief of Staff, Yemi Adaramodu, wielded much power and that the development contributed to the governor’s defeat? Why are they just saying it now? A Chief of Staff serves his master and the master has the right to hire and fire. I think he is in the best position to complain, as the man who hired him. That is why I said that people are free to express their opinions. Do you agree that federal might contributed to Fayose’s victory in the election? Federal might? Didn’t you see it displayed overtly. The might that could not be used at Chibok; at Sambisa forest, was now brought to Ekiti and by the time they were unleashing terror on our people here, Boko Haram insurgents too were at work, doing what they know how to do best. If the level of force used in Ekiti was taken to Chibok, by now the over 200 Nigerian girls abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents would have been rescued. The Yoruba people will say ofi ete sile, onpa lapalapa (misplacing priority). If such level of force was used in the nation’s borders, we would have detected where those girls were kept for more than 85 days. So, I believe that the federal might was overtly used as if Ekiti State does not belong to the federation called Nigeria, when a President can decide to unleash terror on his people in the name of election; Nigeria we hail thee. Shortly before the election, as part of the strategies to win support from the grass roots, APC distributed vehicles to some groups. Now that the party lost the election, will it retrieve them from the beneficiaries? Are you talking of the government or the party? Are the party and government not the same? No, they cannot be the same; there is a thin line of demarcation. We cannot distribute vehicles to the people, but the government can do so. The beneficiaries of the vehicles are citizens of Ekiti State. If what the government has done was not proper, there are ways it could be redressed and not all what the government did could be termed as inducement. So, the government has the duty to satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of the people. EFCC says Fayose has a case to answer, is that kind of hope for APC? He has always been having cases to answer. What is your comment on a claim that Fayemi’s plan to create local governments towards the end of his administration was meant to cause problem for the incoming government? Creating local government development areas is a process. The question you should have asked is, when did this process start? The process started almost three months before the election. People were asked to submit memoranda and they were submitted and a committee was set up to receive the memoranda and after that, a tour was organised by the committee to visit all parts of the state where interests were expressed. Later, towns and villages that want to work together were interviewed and the committee now sent its report to the governor. |
US Secretary of State John Kerry is holding a second day of talks in Afghanistan to try to end a row over the result of the presidential poll. Kerry is meeting candidates Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, who accuse each other of electoral fraud, at the US compound in the capital, Kabul. Ghani, the winner of preliminary results in the second round, has backed an “extensive audit” of votes. Meanwhile, 10 people have been killed in bomb attacks blamed on the Taliban. Eight civilians, including several women, died when a roadside bomb blew up in southern Kandahar province. A bomb in the eastern city of Jalalabad, in Nangarhar province, claimed two more lives. Afghanistan’s current President Hamid Karzai, who came to office after the US-led overthrow of the Taliban, is stepping down after more than 10 years. US officials said they were hoping for a breakthrough on Saturday after the first day of negotiations remained inconclusive. The US Secretary of State, who arrived in Kabul on Friday in a hastily arranged visit, earlier welcomed Mr Ghani’s backing of an audit. “No-one is declaring victory at this time. The results have yet to be finalised and so those questions have to be resolved and I’m very appreciative that Dr Ghani respects that,” Mr Kerry told journalists ahead of starting the talks. The US has been concerned at reports that Abdullah, who preliminary results suggest lost the election, is planning a “parallel government”. Results announced by Afghanistan’s election officials give Ghani 56.44 per cent of votes in the 14 June run-off, with Mr Abdullah gaining 43.45 per cent. The results were markedly different from those achieved in the first round of voting, held in April. In that round, Abdullah fell just short of an outright majority, with 44.9 per cent, with Mr Ghani second at 31.5 per cent. Votes are already being re-checked at more than 7,000 polling stations – nearly a third of the total number. Correspondents say recounts could significantly alter the final result, due on July 22. The UN Assistance Mission to Afghanistan warned it would be “premature” for either side to claim victory. There are also concerns about a further deterioration in the security situation. Taliban militants have been testing the limits of the Afghan army in recent weeks, with a major offensive in the southern province of Helmand. The withdrawal of foreign troops by the end of this year will be the litmus test of whether more than a decade of training and investment in building up Afghanistan’s own security forces has paid off, correspondents say. President Barack Obama has said the US remained committed to Afghanistan provided the incoming president signed a security agreement. Both Abdullah and Ghani have said they are committed to signing the deal with the US that would allow a small force to stay on. |
The Nigeria Police Force has said that credible intelligence at its disposal indicated that terrorists have perfected a plot to carry out attacks on the Abuja transport sector. The Force stated that the attacks which are intended to cause panic amongst residents and visitors alike are planned to be perpetrated through suicide bombings, or through the use of Improvised Explosive Devices concealed in luggage, bags, cans, and other receptacles. A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in Abuja on Saturday said the Police High Command had ordered the FCT Commissioner of Police in particular and other CPs in adjoining States to beef-up security at major parks around Abuja and its environs. The Police also enjoined the general public, particularly those within and outside the Federal Capital Territory to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, movements or activities to the Security Forces without delay. It urged the citizens not to panic, noting that Security Forces are working round the clock to neutralize and effectively deal with the threat. As part of additional efforts at forestalling the attacks and strengthening security around the transport sector, the Police High Command called on the management of motor parks to ensure that travelers and workers’ safety comes first. It charged them to constantly conduct regular and routine scanning of their environments while insisting on carrying out a thorough search on passengers and their bags as well as vehicles entering and leaving their parks. It also advised that such searches must involve the active participation of the passengers and warned that any item or luggage unaccompanied by any passenger must be rejected outright and should not be allowed into the vehicle. Passengers are also enjoined to be on the lookout for any passenger, who might come in with luggage but would attempt to disembark without such luggage. It said, “While operators of motor parks are strongly advised to discourage overnight parking of vehicles at motor parks, particularly by unknown persons, the Police authorities further advised motor park workers to reduce congestion at the parks by disallowing the indiscriminate parking of private cars, tricycles and motorcycles at the precincts of motor parks.” In addition, the Police High Command tasked the general public in other places outside the motor parks to also monitor their environments “as the terrorists may likely shift attention having known that their plots have been uncovered.” Meanwhile, the Police can be reached on the following hot lines: FCT Police Control Room – 07057337653, Force Intelligence Bureau Operations Room – 08139379245, 08075650624 and National Emergency Line -112. |
