The European Union will reportedly not deploy a full election observation mission to Nigeria for the 2027 general election, potentially ending more than two decades of extensive EU monitoring of elections in Africa’s most populous country.

The bloc cited growing security concerns and what it described as hostile treatment of its officials following the 2023 elections, Nigeria’s Daily Sun reported on Monday.

Rather than deploying observers across the country as it has done during previous election cycles, the EU is expected to maintain only a small team in Abuja to follow developments and report to Brussels, according to the report.

If maintained, the decision would mark a significant shift in the EU’s engagement with Nigeria’s electoral process.

The bloc has deployed election observation missions to Nigeria for every general election since 2003, making the country one of its longest-running election observation engagements in Africa.

The EU’s own records show that missions were deployed for Nigeria’s elections in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

The scale of the reported pullback is particularly significant when compared with the EU’s presence during Nigeria’s last general election.

Ahead of the February 2023 presidential election, a core team of 11 EU experts arrived in Abuja in January, followed by 40 long-term observers deployed around the country.

The mission eventually accredited 110 observers drawn from 25 EU member states, alongside Norway, Switzerland and Canada. They monitored the presidential and legislative elections as well as subsequent state elections.

The mission remained in Nigeria for three months, from January to April 2023.

Nigeria has long attracted significant international election monitoring because of its political and economic weight on the continent.

With a population exceeding 200 million, developments in the country are closely watched for their potential implications for democratic stability in West Africa, a region that has experienced a series of military coups and political crises in recent years.

The EU’s relationship with Nigerian authorities became strained following its assessment of the 2023 general election.

In its final report, the EU mission said the elections exposed “enduring systemic weaknesses” and that shortcomings in electoral law and administration damaged public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The mission issued 23 recommendations, six of which it considered priorities.

Among them were calls to improve the transparency of election results, strengthen safeguards around the appointment of INEC officials, address impunity for electoral offences, improve protections for journalists and tackle barriers facing women in politics.

The Nigerian government pushed back strongly against the assessment at the time, rejecting some of the mission’s conclusions.

Despite those tensions, engagement between the EU and Nigeria’s electoral authorities continued.

In October 2025, an EU follow-up mission led by Barry Andrews, who headed the 2023 observer mission, returned to Nigeria to assess progress on the recommendations.

INEC said at the time that the EU acknowledged “very significant progress” in some areas. But the European delegation also warned that major reforms were still outstanding and that time was running out to implement them before the 2027 election.

The EU’s follow-up assessment found that only one of its 23 recommendations had been fully implemented, while two had been partially implemented, eight were ongoing and nine had not been implemented.

The reported EU decision comes as preparations for Nigeria’s next general election begin to gather pace.

INEC had previously said it intended to invite the EU alongside the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and the Commonwealth to observe the 2027 elections.

In October 2025, then-INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu said international observation missions had helped improve the quality of Nigerian elections and electoral activities.

Civil society organisations have also recently called on the electoral commission to issue invitations to international observer groups early enough to allow comprehensive monitoring of the process

For Nigeria, the absence of a full EU mission would not prevent other international and domestic groups from observing the election.

But it would remove one of the largest and most established international monitoring operations from a presidential election that will be closely watched across Africa and beyond.

A Nigerian teenager, Oluwatobiloba Akinrinola, has been jailed in the UK for his role in a violent robbery where party guests were threatened, assaulted and humiliated during a planned attack.

Akinrinola, 19, of Slippers Place, London was sentenced to seven years in prison alongside Richile Vangu, 20, who received an 11-year jail term after Leicester Crown Court heard details of the offences.

The court was told that the pair were involved in a robbery at a gathering in North Kilworth, Leicestershire, on November 21, 2025, where partygoers were threatened with a knife and forced to take part in a dance for social media.

Vangu was said to have organised the robbery and recruited others, including Akinrinola, to help carry out the attack.

At the party, at least eight men were forced into a bedroom where they were threatened with a large “zombie-style knife” as designer clothing and an iPhone were stolen.

Vangu then demanded that each victim transfer £1,000, threatening to stab them in the leg if they failed to comply.

He also forced them to perform multiple takes of a TikTok dance while photographing their student identification cards to confirm where they lived.

Sentencing the pair, Judge Steven Evans said Vangu had planned the robbery and “recruited” a group of men to assist him, including Akinrinola.

The judge said Vangu introduced himself as Trixta, “like a villain from the movies”.

He added that although Akinrinola was “subservient” to Vangu, he played “an essential part” in the offences.

The court heard the violence continued later that day when some victims who had failed to transfer money were ordered to attend student accommodation in Bath Lane.

There, Akinrinola forced some of the men to perform star jumps and high knees before repeatedly punching them.

Vangu then whipped several victims with a belt, shot them in the head with a BB gun, waxed their faces and threatened to cut off their dreadlocks if they failed to pay him.

Judge Evans described the actions of the pair as having “tortured” and “humiliated” the victims.

Vangu later posted videos recorded during the house party and student accommodation incidents on TikTok.

During sentencing, Judge Evans said Vangu showed a “complete absence of empathy” towards his victims, laughing as evidence was presented to the jury during his trial.

A Probation Service report stated that he had “enjoyed humiliating and targeting” his victims.

Vangu was convicted of four counts of robbery, 10 counts of blackmail and one count of actual bodily harm. He had previously pleaded guilty to another count of actual bodily harm. Alongside his 11-year sentence, he was given an extended licence period of three years.

Akinrinola was convicted of nine counts of blackmail, four counts of robbery and two counts of actual bodily harm. He was found not guilty of one count of blackmail.

Two other defendants, Benjamin Osadolor, 19, of Pytchley Street, Northampton, and Ayomide Ibraheem, 19, of Sedan Way, London, were found not guilty on all charges after being arrested in connection with the incident.

I reside in Nyanya Area of Abuja. Last year December, our landlord took me to the magistrate court that my rent expired since 31st of May 2025 which was a pure lie. I paid my rent from last year which expired 31 st of June last month/this year.

Due to renovation of the court premises, no hearing took place from January to March this year. In April l was notified of the hearing which l attended but the lawyer of the landlord did not attend so the Registry of the court told me to go and wait for the lawyer of the landlord to serve me another notice of hearing. While waiting for the notice of hearing from the landlord's lawyer, l got a call from the court Registry to come to court in May for final judgement that the landlord's lawyer had submitted their final written document, that l have been served notice of hearing but did not come. I thought that he was joking but he wasn't.

On the 8th of May this year, l appeared before the court and the judge asked for my final written defense and l told her that l have never been heard once not to talk of final defense. The judge then said notice of the hearing of 27th April was pasted at my door and the photo was taken. She asked the photo be brought to me to confirm if the background was that of my apartment. I didn't know what to say, l was speechless. I told the judge that, if indeed the notice of the hearing was pasted at my door, then it must have been removed before l returned from work on the day, that l did not see it. The judge became angry that l was lying and that She could had me sent to jail.

She said that the case would be coming up for adoption last month but the court did not sit. Last Friday the Registry called me again that the final Judgement would come up today Monday, l went to the court this morning. The Judge again asked for name which l told her and also told her that l have put together my defense that contained receipts of rent payment all the way to 31st of last month but she refused to hear my defense.

She delivered judgement that l pay the landlord over 600k as he claimed and to vacate the apartment on or before 10th of August that's next month. Is it truly how the legal system works?
