Nairaland GeneralTime To Harness Artificial Intelligence by Bossken(op): 3:17am On Jan 14, 2020
By Elvis Eromosele

The face-off between man and technology has lasted through-out history. From the first striking of stones to produce fire to the making of metal works, man has struggled to tame technology or machine, if you please.

The invention of the computer only served to bring the battle closer home. There has always been the fear that one day the computer (machines) would among other things, take jobs, change the world and maybe even take over the world and rule man.

This fear has persisted.

A deep and often unspoken fear is that the end is near when machines begin to think. And thinking machines is precisely what artificial intelligence (AI) is all about. The emergence of thinking computers therefore only served to heighten that fear.

Consider when the World chess champion, Garry Kasparov, faced the first thinking machine, an IBM supercomputer called Deep Blue. The first match was played in Philadelphia in 1996 and won by Kasparov. The rematch was played in New York City in 1997 and won by Deep Blue. The 1997 match was the first defeat of a reigning world chess champion by a computer under tournament conditions. When Deep Blue took the match by winning the final game, Kasparov refused to believe it.

It was an epic moment. It sent shock waves around the world. Naturally, there were controversies. Some argued that everything was done to make the battleground comfortable for the machine, it was chilled to, like we say in Nigeria, mortuary temperature.

The truth be told, computer scientists had for decades viewed chess as a meter stick for artificial intelligence. Garry’s defeat, in many circles, meant that humans were entering the age of the machines.

Since that time, so much has happened. Computers have since grown so much more powerful. In fact, today, we have apps on our mobile phones that are far more powerful than Deep Blue. Thinking computers are everywhere. Welcome the age of Artificial Intelligence!

To understand what AI is and how it works, let’s hear the experts:

“AI is the use of intricate logic or advanced analytical methods to perform simple tasks at greater scale in ways that mean we can do more at large scale with the workers we have, allowing them to focus on what humans are best at, like handling complex exceptions or demonstrating sympathy.” –Whit Andrews, vice president and distinguished analyst with Gartner Research

“AI is a mathematical and algorithmic model that allows computers to learn to do tasks without being explicitly programmed to do those tasks.” –Timothy Havens, the William and Gloria Jackson Associate Professor of Computer Systems in the College of Computing at Michigan Technological University and director of the Institute of Computing and Cybersystems.
Today, AI is becoming more pervasive. It is already in use in several sectors, particularly the financial service and marketing spheres. Reports indicate that the demand for AI-enabled initiatives would continue to increase in the coming days.

It is interesting to note that AI is rapidly making its way into the workplace. Today it touches customer care, staff recruitment and consumer insights and marketing. Tomorrow, it would reach and cover more business segments.

In spite of this, mentioning AI in the workplace still produces fear – particularly for job security. Until recently, people predicted that the automation brought by AI would render many job functions redundant. Currently, thankfully, the fear that AI will lead to redundancy has reduced with experts re-evaluating their perspective.

The truth is that AI is not replacing jobs. On the contrary, reports show that it is targeting specific tasks, improving and making them easier and faster. According to PWC, “72% of business decision-makers consider AI as a key tool for allowing humans to focus on more meaningful work.” Precisely!

So, while AI will eliminate certain types of job, it would create others. It will limit some functions, expand others and definitely restructure some industries and realign others. Overall, there would be net job gain.

AI will bring good and bad. Individuals and businesses must explore how they can use it for good. Take advantage of its potential to improve productivity, boost capacity and increase revenue.

As Red Hat technologist Gordon Haff wrote, “AI projects in the past have often tried to boil the ocean - to solve multi-faceted problems like self-driving cars. Today’s enterprise AI projects are more practical, often focusing on customer experience pain points. “What’s happening with AI today is exciting in part because it involves practical solutions that address complexity, the need to handle more and more data, and demanding customers,” Haff noted.

Evidently, the use of AI in business will continue to grow. In its current iteration, AI is significantly more practical, more useful, and more impactful. Its definition as the technology that allows computers to do things that were once only the domain of humans, is proving truer each day. For example, computers have always been able to calculate, today, with AI, they can learn and draw conclusions.

AI is essentially a thinking machine. It thinks by learning and making deductions from the data available to it

To work, AI needs data. It consumes data in order to learn. Big data refers to the massive sets of data that are now available and to all intents and purposes suited for this purpose. These sets of data can be analyzed by machines. This can reveal patterns and trends, and facilitate making future predictions. With big data, AI is in its element.
It is no surprise therefore that AI and Big Data are already driving the provision of new, innovative and efficient services, particularly in the financial sector.

In Nigeria, some fintechs are already adopting AI and Big Data. Take Renmoney. With AI and big data, it has unprecedented customer insight so that it is able to assess and disburse loans much faster, deliver incredible and efficient customer experience and indeed broaden the scope of its operations.

In adopting AI, firms demonstrate their commitment to executing what is truly a data-driven strategy. AI will enable organisations to make optimal use of data. In the age of social media, data is everywhere. To be able to gather and harness it would be tremendous. AI is helping to create the business of the future.

Nairaland GeneralFive Things That Would Shape Nigerian ICT Space In 2020 by Bossken(op): 3:12pm On Jan 03, 2020
In a new year, everyone expects everything to be different. This may not always be the case. One thing is clear, however, while 2019 may have passed it would cast a shadow over 2020.

The information communications technology (ICT) sector in Nigeria remains, perhaps, the most vibrant sector in the economy. Information from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals that the contribution of ICT to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) surpassed that of oil and gas in the second quarter of 2019. The sector contributed 13.85 per cent to total nominal GDP which is much higher than the 11.22 per cent contributed in the same period in 2018.

Available information indicates that it would again do better in 2020.

I do not have a crystal ball but here are five things that, I like to think, would shape the Nigerian ICT space in 2020:

Ministerial Interventions

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has on the resumption of office shown that it would not be business as usual in the ICT space. He quickly demonstrated an unprecedented interest in the welfare of the Nigerian telecoms consumer.

He singlehandedly cancelled the proposed USSD charge, kicked against the rising data cost, pushed for the elimination of illegal deductions and abolition of automatic activation of voicemail services. These earned him plenty of accolades from a wide segment of stakeholders and some knocks from interest groups. If history is anything to go by, he will continue on this tangent.

In 2020, he would continue to push for a massive reduction in data cost, demand lower call charges and insist that the telecom operators quashed compulsory voicemail services.

The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) is likely to struggle to remain neutral in the light of the minister’s action. Its efforts to remain neutral will likely backfire. The Minister would put the commission on the spot time and again this year.

This sort of ministerial Intervention is not peculiar to Nigeria. In South Africa, there are calls for lower data cost. Two of Africa’s largest two mobile operators, Vodacom and MTN, have been ordered by the Competition Commission in South Africa to cut their data prices in their home country by a third to half or face prosecution. The commission called the current data pricing ‘biased against the poor’. Also, the European Union has opened preliminary investigations into Google and Facebook's data practices, assessing whether the two U.S. tech firms are complying with its rules in the region.

Lower Data Cost

The call for lower data cost is getting louder. I doubt if the telecoms firms can hide from this much longer. The pressure from the consumers and now the Minister would not only remain but would likely escalate in 2020. The question is not if but when the operators will reduce the cost of data significantly.

When a key player in the telecoms sector made the assertion that 'data is life', it was spot on. Although, one wonders if it realised how right it is. That statement is potent - Data is indeed life. The range of things that data enables the average person to do are humongous: think - Google services including search, maps and courses, free training programmes, connection on social media and business possibilities.

The calls for lower Data Cost will persist, how the operators will react is anyone’s guess.

Let the price come down.

5G et Al

News reports indicate that with the trial launch in 2019 by MTN Nigeria, Nigeria has emerged as only one of the few African countries that have committed to the new mobile technology – 5G. This is the fifth-generation networks.

Nigeria hopes to start rolling out 5G in select cities in 2020. It is almost naturally, therefore, to expect other operators to begin to scramble to get their names on the 5G scene - never mind that 4G is still largely under-utilised.

According to Evan Kirstel, Social Media Business Strategist (Advisor) at NameUCStrategies.com, “5G networks will be vital for supporting the growing demand for mobile. But 5G’s unparalleled data capacity, speed and low latency will also help to enable a new breed of smart cities applications. The 5G-based infrastructure is set to offer a wide range of opportunities…”

Undoubtedly, 5G will demand and indeed attract new investments, create jobs and jump-start innovation in several industries. Long live 5G!

Cloud Computing, Big Data and AI

Cloud computing is a term used with increasing frequency in the past few years. Essentially, it is a technology that allows a business to store its servers and data off-site in secure data centres which can then be accessed by users through the internet. This adaptation has spread across most industries and accountancy is no exception.

Demand for any time and anywhere access to information is the biggest driver of cloud computing. Today in Nigeria, thankfully, cloud computing is now more than a buzzword. It is perhaps the fastest growing technology services today.

Among other factors, it considered cost-effective.

According to Bart McDonough, CEO, Agio, “rapid adoption of cloud computing will continue to be fueled by the understanding of “ease of use and scalability.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data are following closely. Artificial intelligence is described as the technology that allows computers to do things that were once only the domain of humans. For example, computers have always been able to calculate. With AI, they can learn and draw conclusions.

To work, AI needs data. It consumes data in order to learn. Big data refers to the massive sets of data that are now available for this purpose. These sets of data can be analyzed by machines. This can reveal patterns and trends, and facilitate making future predictions.

AI and Big Data are already driving the provision of new and innovative services, particularly in the financial sector.

Business on Social Media

Social media will fully emerge as the go-to platform for interaction, connection and transaction with customers. This year, plenty of small businesses will begin to explore and exploit opportunities in the social media space. Expectedly, the volume of transactions will hit new highs.

Selling on social media is not just a fad. It is here to stay.

It would continue to thrive because it offers convenience and prospective buyers have the opportunity to read feedback from others who may have bought.

The business of social media and on social media is a true win-win.

The best part is that efforts to regulate social media will continue to fail

Extra: Capacity building and training in ICT would remain big, sales of smartphone accessories would continue to rise and new businesses (StartUps) would spring up across the county in 2020.

Nairaland GeneralBet9ja: Riding On Pop Culture To Enhance Bonding, Brand Relevance by Bossken(op): 6:29pm On Jan 01, 2020
Dynamism and the ability to spot and jump on trends are some of the hallmarks of a proactive brand. Marketing scholars establish that there is a connection between consumers behaviour and success of a brand, as these determine brands' marketing dynamics. They, in turn, influences the thought process put behind a brand’s marketing initiatives.

*The Consumer Insight Connections*

Hence, brand builders often use consumers’ behavior (insights) as a way of connecting to the consumers' passions and touchpoints. How swift a brand is able to spot and get consumers insights on trends that drive their behaviour is a function of how far the brand is ready to build comradeship, empathy and court consumers as the centerpiece of the brand’s operations.

Brands in this category are often seen and described as proactive, modern, fashionable, contemporary and up-to-date. They are consumer-centric.

How would you feel, as a millennial if your favourite lifestyle brand calls you bae? Research establishes that the consumers will very often respond positively, further embrace the brand, empathise better and bonds become stronger. This is in view of the fact that the brand speaks the consumers' language.

*Cultivating the Customers*

According to Prof Chris Ogbechie, Professor of Strategic Management Lagos Business School, “in today’s marketing world, the key issue is to create emotional brand attachment in all our marketing communications, therefore, brands need to actively cultivate relationships with customers.”

This shows that relevant words and trends or popular (pop) culture are a useful weapon of marketing. Similarly, many have come to embrace the fact that talking like a real person or interacting with consumers is far more engaging as a form of brand storytelling than using dry, corporate and professional jargon-filled language.

*Riding on Pop Culture*

However, to ride on pop culture as a pivot to connecting with the consumers to take advantage, a brand and its custodians must ‘know the audience’ very well just as the word, phrase or trend must also ‘be current.’ It is also instructive to be cautious of jumping on a trend as it can become outdated within a very short period of time.

While it is often difficult to know how long a trend will remain popular, one thing brands can gauge is whether or not an audience will be receptive to it. This shows that research is often critical in this regard. For brands, the trick is, “knowing when it’s worth trying, and when it’s worth steering clear.’

Ultimately, the battle for brands performance is in the marketplace and not in the comfort of any boardroom. Brands that connect with the consumers are more likely to win in the marketplace and take the leadership position irrespective of the sector they belong.

*On Conquest of Culture*

One brand that has deployed the use of pop culture so well on a global scale is PepsiCo’s Pepsi Cola. “Pepsi's innovation in the field of nestling, settling, and establishing connections in pop culture began in 1960. So in a revolutionary move at the time, they began to run ads that focused not on the quality of Pepsi, but the idea of Pepsi as a youth staple. In the early ’60s, ads for Pepsi were aimed at young boomers who “consumed soft drinks far in excess of their weight in population,” a former Pepsi executive noted, as found in Timothy Taylor’s book The Sound of Capitalism: Advertising, Music, and the Conquest of Culture.

Historically, brands in Nigeria have been known to connect with consumers by speaking their language. Brands understand the influence of this on consumers purchasing and buying patterns. The street is where the battle is won or lost. To win requires some level of being smart, swift and in-depth understanding of the consumer and his behaviour.

*Bet9ja’s Fluid to hit the bull-eyes always*

2019 came with its intrigues and challenges for the business environment. The issue of government policies (border closure) and their impact on the economy is a case in point. While some school of thought applauds it, others castigated it. Both positions, however, draw on Warren Bennis’ leadership theories which hinge on “Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity” (VUCA) nature of “our” operating environment.

Notwithstanding the challenges of the year, some brands have remained focused on serving the consumers using superior insights to connect, build a community with them and above all, place the consumer at heart of their marketing initiatives through contents that resonate.

Bet9ja has amply demonstrated these since its inception into the Nigerian market. It has moved from the mainstream betting category to become the leader of the innovatively unique gaming space. This shows fluidity to remain relevant and contemporary to win always. Femi Osobajo, Senior Marketing Manager, Bet9ja noted that all the company's marketing activities and activations are rooted in in-depth consumer research.
Such concerted efforts have ensured the brand is not just in tune with the consumers but also staying relevant, ahead of its category and hitting the bull-eyes to stand out ahead in 2019 and beyond.

*The Gang*

Some of the trends and platforms that became social currencies of 2019 include DStv Big Brother Naija’s ‘Pepper Dem Gang’, it featured Bet9ja, Innoson Motors, Pepsi Nigeria and Heritage Bank among others as key partners. Similarly, Livespot X Festival featuring Cardi B, Star Boy Wizkid, and Burna Boy also had Pepsi as one of its sponsors.

Leading financial Brand, Access Bank, and Star Lager brand co-branded ‘Accessthestars’, it provided an unprecedented platform for the brands to bond with customers across regions of the country. In the same vein, Born in Africa Festival (BAFEST), the highly entertaining fusion of music, art, film, and fashion –by Access Bank staged its second edition.

Commenting on the inherent benefits of driving the brand with pop culture, Amaechi Okobi, Group Head, Communications & External Affairs, Access Bank Plc declared, “At Access Bank, we’re aiming at rewriting the African narrative of negativity all while positioning the best the continent has to offer.”

*Brand’s Role is Key*

Research by Kantar, a leading global research firm confirms that the most successful messaging occurs in stories where the brand’s role is necessary, believable, and integral to the plot.

Against this background, Bet9ja as the leading gaming company in Nigeria reinforced is positioning in the market through a string of remarkable concerts aimed at reinvigorating the consumers for the year ahead.

Venturing out of its gaming forte, to create other consumer touchpoints becomes instructive as it brings to live its most recent thematic campaign, ‘More than a bet,’ the gaming company through his deliberate claim, leaves no one in doubt that the company’s operation is intended to enhance livelihood through job creations to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. By being intentional, the company has demonstrated its support for different sectors that range from sports to tourism and entertainment to mention but a few.

*Detty December Jamz*

The gaming company further underscored its steadfast interest in the entertainment industry when it heralded its ‘Detty fest December concerts’ as soon as it concluded one of the most successful BBNaija shows as a major sponsor.
It was more than a three-course meal for consumers to have the best of experience of the holidays with party after party to make the best of the holidays, disclosed Osobajo. “Starting from ‘Teni the billionaire’ concert to ‘StarBoy fest’, ‘Davido and Marlian fest’ the December of 2019 will remain a pleasant moment best described as a wow experience! that brought not only music lovers together but friends, families and loved ones under a euphoric atmosphere of fun, music to connect, network, relax and build new relationships be it business or social,” the Senior Marketing Manager, Femi Osobajo, asserted.

*Here to make Indelible Impact*

According to the Senior Marketing Manager, Femi Osobajo, the various concerts were put together by bet9ja, shows their sense of commitment to supporting the growth of the entertainment industry, and clearly their understanding that talent alone cannot make industry sustainable and viable at international levels but also to keep projecting the positive image of Nigeria as a land of possibilities. For bet9ja their commitment is irrevocable.

*40,000 strong still counting*

Bet9ja continues to contribute to making life meaningful for people beyond gaming. The gaming platform which people see as an alternative source of income has created jobs, supported citizens to live better with direct and indirect employment generation at over 40,000. Many of its agents across the country have incredible stories of zero to hero transformation of life.

*Enabler of Positive Vibes*

Leveraging on the street trend – ‘Detty December’ signifying an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and deep enjoyment just like Coca-Cola’s ‘Gbe Bottle e,’ the gaming brand has not only connected to its consumers at their touchpoints, it has further endeared itself to the teeming population as an enabler of positive vibes and empowerment across board.
Nairaland GeneralA December To Remember As Bet9ja Activates Detty Fest For Work-life Balance by Bossken(op): 10:53am On Dec 23, 2019
Bet9ja, an indigenous gaming company has once again demonstrated its believe in the Nigerian entertainment industry and avowed willingness to making life better for the people as the gaming company throws its weight behind Detty Fest December party.

The sponsorship deal which is in partnership with select Nigerian music acts – Teni, Wizkid, Davido and Naira Marley, is intended to make this December, a huge boom for the entertainment industry, and also create opportunities for Nigerians to connect with their iconic stars, who daily inspire them to achieve their dreams.

Historically, December signals the season of entertainment, fun, sharing and above all a time of refreshing. Even nature - floral and fauna blossom. In line with its core belief, which is in sync with Bet9ja's vision to be an enabler of the entertainment industry, the Detty Fest initiative once again provides the opportunity for it to demonstrate why it's indeed MORE THAN A BET.

According to findings by our correspondent, Bet9ja is pleased with lined up shows and it's leaving no stone unturned to ensure absolute success for the high octane events. The partners are doing everything it takes to make the festive season beat all expectations and one to remember for a long time.

Speaking on the initiative, the Senior Marketing Manager, Femi Osobajo, said, "since inception of our operations in Nigeria, we have been providing support for the entertainment industry through sponsorships as a strategic partner to enhance the growth of the industry for socio-economic gains that includes but not limited to Job creations, talent discovery and general youth empowerment."

"Our decision to embark on the Detty Fest December is to connect with citizens and create a platform for them to have the best of fun and leisure during this season and beyond." Said Osobajo.

Osobajo, further added that every individual connects with music because as a universal language, it speaks to every situation whether one wants to be happy, feel positive, be inspired, or excited.

It's no news that modern life forces us to be burdened with heavy tensions. This makes people work for hours to achieve their goals of living a minimal dignified level of existence. Most often than than not people get fatigued and bored of their daily routines.

Making time for relaxation through entertainment activities frees our mind from burdens and give us comfort that can re-energize people.

It is for reasons like this that Bet9ja believes that the impact of entertainment on the society is positive. Supporting these great acts to make the holidays a true time of refreshing for everyone is a commitment on the part of Bet9ja to enable people develop a healthy work life balance.

Besides, entertainment also increases our depth of knowledge. People can learn and live healthier, and have up-to-date knowledge on various developments in the world. This is a state of being whole both mentally and physically to achieve and live a healthy lifestyle.

Bet9ja is pleased to contribute to making life meaningful for people beyond gaming. The gaming platform which people see as alternative source of income has created jobs, supported citizens to live better with direct and indirect employment generation at over 40,000. Many of its agents across the country have incredible stories of zero to hero transformation of life.

Through the gaming platform they have become employers of labour contributing to reducing unemployment in the country.

As part of its success story, there are numerous cases where people with a single ticket of N100 won millions of naira that changed their story – empower them economically and enable them to support themselves – live a better life and support people around them (families and friends)

With 2019 coming to a close in weeks, it's interesting to see that bet9ja is ready to spice up the holidays for people with the Detty Fest December that will be a time of fun, networking and relaxation to finish the year strong.

Nairaland GeneralTerrible State Of Lagos-abuja Highway Through Lampese by Bossken(op): 5:34pm On Oct 06, 2019
This is a major highway connecting the north to the south western part of Nigeria.

Over ther last three weeks I have received calls and seen photos of how terrible the road has become.

The popular Abuja-Lagos highway passing through Lampese, a rural and semi linear settlement in Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo state has become a nightmare for travellers.

Local economic activities have been hindered due to the deplorable state of the roads. Travellers have stayed stranded for days with harrowing experience just to navigate through the long stretch of faded portions.

This road was last reconstructed during the era of the late General Sanni Abacha between 1997/1998 under the then Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) headed by Major General Muhammadu Buhari now democratically elected President of Nigeria.

Over 20 years down memory lane, the road has become a shadow of itself seeking urgent attention from the government and all concerned authorities.

A cry for help for the people of Lampese and the adjoining communities whose economic activities have been trapped. Farmers are not able to move their produce to the market places.

A cry for help for all road users, the traders who buy and sell between the north and south west, a cry for help for companies (manufacturers) who have there value chain along this route.

This and many other federal roads in Edo state and other parts of the country needs urgent Federal Government's attention.

Nairaland GeneralBet9ja Complements Government's Efforts In Job Creations by Bossken(op): 10:07pm On Jun 23, 2019
In line with the federal government's goal to engage Nigeria's burgeoning youth population and alleviate poverty through generation of employment, Bet9ja, Nigeria's preferred sports betting firm, is complementing government's efforts in creating jobs for young people through its operations across the country.

Speaking to newsmen recently, Ayo Ojuroye, the Managing Director, Bet9ja, revealed that with its foothold across country, the firm currently employs thousands of Nigerians directly and indirectly.

According to Ojuroye, " Bet9ja is MORE THAN A BET. We are focused on transforming lives, empowering the youth and contributing to Nigeria's socioeconomic development."

He noted that through its operations it is engaging more young people to operate its pioneering agency outlets. Beyond signing them up as agents, the company provides ongoing training, capacity building programme and access to top notch technology.

"Bet9ja is empowering the youths one agent unit and one stake at a time" he stated.
The Managing Director said that the company will continue to seek ways to empower Nigerians economically so as as to help more people achieve their dream of enhanced livelihood.

He insisted that sports betting, as an industry, is involved directly and indirectly in efforts to curb unemployment as opportunities exist in gaming for several roles including oddsmakers, analysts, security, cashiers, among others.

Ojuroye noted the impact of this interventions has a ripple effect on the economy as employees/beneficiaries of the industry spend their wages in the broader economy - payment of rent, school fees, transportation, food and beverage, and entertainment.

On partnering with government, he said that the company, in alignment with global best practice, pays it taxes, and other duties and levies to all levels government promptly.

He noted that operators in the sports betting industry are already making significant difference in the community where they operate by supporting projects that touch the passion of the youth such as sporting activities, cultural festivals and other socioeconomic activities.

For instance, Bet9ja supports the growth of football development in Nigeria, through partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to promote grassroots football development, he said.

Nairaland GeneralPolice, Tech Partners Set To Launch Crime Reporting App by Bossken(op): 8:15pm On Aug 13, 2017
In furtherance of efforts to curb insecurity across the country the Nigeria Police under the leadership of the IGP Ibrahim Idris has partnered with leading technology firms to develop and deploy an innovative mobile app, Hawk Eye.

Hawk Eye is a mobile app that will allow users to report crimes anonymously to the police by video, voice or text. It was developed by Lagos based tech firm Web Assets Nigeria Limited, in partnership with US based tech firms BBGN&K and tech giant Microsoft along with the active collaboration of the Nigeria Police. The solution provides key technologies such as facial recognition and KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators).

Speaking ahead of the launch in Abuja, Mr. Kayode Aladesuyi, Chief Executive Officer, Web Assets, noted that Security of life and property is an indispensable ingredient for national growth and development.

According to Mr. Aladesuyi, “Hawk Eye is ademonstration of the commitment of the Nigerian Police to work in partnership with communities and the Nigerian public to continue to improve the security situation across the country.”Hawk Eye is a revolutionary technology because of the enterprise tools it provides police to respond, address and manage crimes reported, he added.

On the working of the app, Mr. Aladesuyi said while the Hawk Eye App will allow users to report crimes anonymously to the police by video, voice or text. He explained that the app is part of a comprehensive security solution that involves the equipping of patrol vehicles with Mobile Device Terminals, providing performance management, data as decision tools and the revamping of the police command and control centers. Essentially the Nigeria Police, provided with the right resources can now provide effective and efficient response to crimes reported by citizens.

He explained that with Hawk Eye, citizens are empowered as source of human intelligence in the fight against crimes such as kidnapping, terrorism, robbery, human trafficking etc. The system is expected to enhance the community policing plan recently announced by the government to improve security in the country. The project is managed by DIG ICT, Foluso Adebanjo of the Nigeria Police Force. All reporting is ANONYMOUS, the app does not identify nor capture the information of person filing report.

Citizens can download the Hawk Eye Crime Reporting app for free, select crime type to be reported, capture image, video or call for help. The system uses GPS location services on the user’s mobile phone to identify user’s location for immediate police response.

System is now available for reporting by citizens in FCT and coming to Lagos in September, with roll out planned for other States.

Hawk Eye is available in English and Native languages (English, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and Pidging).

With Hawk Eye access to report criminal and other nefarious activities is only an app click away. He urged Nigeria to ‘Spot It. Report It!’

Here are eight simple tips to guide you as part of precautionary measures to avoid car fire outbreak;

Avoid storing flammable materials in your vehicle: While you may occasionally need to transport items such as petrol, gas cans, lighter fluids, or propane gas, don’t leave these items in your car on a regular basis because doing so can lead to fire. Only make short trips while carrying flammables, and immediately remove them from the vehicle once you’ve arrived at your destination.
When you do transport flammable materials, take safety precautions. For example, gasoline should only be transported in small amounts that are secured in a proper container. You should also ventilate the vehicle. Don’t place gas or propane in your passenger areas.

Avoid smoking in your car: Smoking cigarettes can lead to a fire if you accidently leave a burning cigarette in your vehicle or if hot ash falls onto flammable material, such as paper. Your risk further increases if you carry a lighter to light the cigarettes.
Keep your car clutter-free: Throw out trash and avoid storing items in your car. Allowing these items to remain in your vehicle can create a fire hazard. Not only do extra items, especially crumpled paper, act as fuel if there’s a spark, they also make it easier for you to accidentally leave a flammable item in your car.
For example, a flammable liquid could roll under a pile of trash, potentially resulting in a fire.

Carry a fire extinguisher and fire blanket:
A fire extinguisher and fire blanket can help you put out a fire. Purchase a fire extinguisher that is made for an automobile because the causes of a car fire are often related to electrical issues or combustible fuel, which require a different type of extinguisher.
You can find fire extinguishers for automobiles at your local auto parts store, home improvement store, or online.

Practice defensive driving: Vehicle fires can happen as part of a car accident, so avoid reckless or aggressive driving. While it can be frustrating to give up the right-of-way or to drive slowly, making choices that keep you safe can help you reduce your risk of fire.
60% of deaths that occur due to car fires happen during a fire that was caused by a car accident.
Watch for downed power lines: Be careful when driving around after a storm has occurred because you can encounter dangers like downed power lines. If the downed power line still contains an electrical charge, it could ignite materials in or on your vehicle.

Avoid driving if you’ve spilled oil: During an oil change, you may accidentally spill oil on part of your vehicle. If this happens to you, wash away the oil before you try driving again. Having any amount of oil on your engine can lead to a vehicle fire.

Choose a safe area to park: The mechanical parts of your car can be hot, and parts of the system can ignite dry materials that they come in contact with. Make sure that you don’t park around high grass or in an area where materials such as trash can come in contact with your undercarriage or catalytic converter. Instead, choose a flat area that is empty of debris, such as a driveway or the street.

PoliticsA Clarion Call For Visionary Leaders To Serve by Bossken(op): 11:38am On Jun 28, 2017
Duty call is often a privileged to serve simply because out of the multitude, you are singled out to occupy a position which comes with a title and other incentives. One could be called to serve in any sector cutting across public service, politics, corporate, religion and voluntary service. In the same vein, one could be called to serve in different capacity. Beyond the title that goes with an office, the primary objective of being appointed or elected or nominated or even selected as the case may be is to discharge certain duties.

Different titles have been coined for different services; Honourable, Excellency, Bishop, Senator, Reverend, Imam, Manager, Executive Director, Chief Executive Officer, Colonel, Superintendent, Sergeant, Chief of Staff, Special Adviser, to mention but a few. All these are human ideologies to rank the level of each person in the organisation and the society at large.

In all these, irrespective of the title, one thing that is demanded or required from each person given a title is to discharge the duties and responsibilities that are attached to such position. Anyone called to serve is assumed to have some sense of responsibility and integrity.

Every title comes with some form of authority and Nigeria has been beguiled with title leadership who have used the opportunity to exercise excessive power in the discharge of their duties. A number of people have argued that the time for a new generation of visionary leaders who will discharge their duties efficiently has come.

This reasWe have been bamboozled in a number of ways owing to failure on the parts of our leaders. For over three decades of my being, I have repeatedly heard the phrase, ‘the youths are the leaders of tomorrow’. Repeatedly I have asked; ‘when will these tomorrow(s) come or will this tomorrow ever come’? For me, the tomorrow is now but how can we get the youths into the politics of the country which is in the hands of the egocentric and rigid grandparents who have refused to take a bow.

As 2019 is gradually knocking on our doors, if we indeed hope to go into the future with the expectation of a better Nigeria, we have to rejuvenate a new vision and hope. From independence, we have been riding on experience, which has resulted to the recycling of old heads in governance who have abused positions of authority. These recycled leaders have lost their visions and hence unable to figure out that Nigerians need a positive transformation.

Yearly, we express disappointment over the actions of our lawmakers’ and executives. The express reason is that visionary hands in the corporate sectors have refused to embrace the politics of the land. While we are busy with our private lives, these same set of people and their followers who comprise of the semi-literate and illiterates (area boys) are already holding meetings from the ward level to the federal level strategizing on the way forward. They have cajoled their followers who are ready to lay down their lives for the big man to remain on top while they feed on the crumbs whenever he visits town.

This trend needs to change; the era of honourable members throwing caution into thin air and throw chairs at each other or witch-hunt each other has got to come to an end. Young executives who have risen to board levels emerge into the political scene of our fatherland. Hence experience has failed us, let us resort to new ideologies and visionary leaders who are plying their trade in the private sector.

Recently, events were lined up to mark Lagos @50, the organised colloquium where I expected to see a retinue of youths was flooded by the usual ‘egbons’. The educated and vibrant youths of this country should wake up now at once for time is of the essence. We have been laid back for ages while young men are taking up political leadership in other climes, young men in Nigerian are busy minding their business at the detriment of the future.

The clamour for youths emancipation in politics is laudable, but how many of our learned and professional youths have begun to nurse the ambition of joining or starting any political party. I have taken learning from 39 years old Emmanuel Macron who will be 40 in December. Whilst he served as the Minister of the Economy, Industry and Digital Affairs, he founded and registered a political party in April 2016 and by May 2017; he won the presidential election to become the president of France. If we don’t start taking bold steps now, the certainties of 2019 and subsequent elections will not be different from that of 2015.
Let’s arise and build this nation.

PoliticsResignation Of Public Officers, An Act Of Heroism Or Cowardice? by Bossken(op): 10:54pm On May 05, 2017
By Ken Adejumoh

Resignation is a not a common action in our clime especially from public or political office holders. The commonest form of resignation is when people in the private sector transit from one job to another.

In other climes, it is not a big deal to see public officers resign when they have fallen out of favour with the masses. This occurs mostly when they have been passed a vote of no confidence. But the reverse is the case in the black nations, as people see public office as their birth right and are never willing to let go even when things deteriorate to a terrible state.

In exercising my civic right to freedom of expression, I like to posit that resignation from public office can be honourable or noble or heroic which is in tandem with the popular sage that one should quit the stage when the ovation is loudest. In the black race especially in my father land, resignation by public officers is seen as an act of cowardice. Politicians are never remorseful of their wrong conducts.

Instead of resigning when things are not working with their actions, they chose to remain because their followers or cabals are strongly behind them. Base on this, one can conclude that, it is a taboo for Nigerian leaders to resign from office even when all indices have proven that he is not capable to lead. The single reason being that the leader is surrounded by an avalanche of self-centred individuals who milk the country’s fortunes into their confines. This simply described as greed in high places and wickedness personified.

Resignation has been used as a tactic to fight against a government whose head is steering the affairs in a direction that does not favour the country. In July 2005, resignation was used as a political manoeuvre, in the Philippines, when ten cabinet officials resigned en masse to pressure President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to follow suit over allegations of electoral fraud. Arroyo's predecessor, Joseph Estrada, was successfully forced out of office during the EDSA Revolution of 2001 as he faced the first impeachment trial held in the country's history.

Just like yesterday, David Cameron resigned as the Prime Minister of Great Britain. Despite having previously said that he would stay until the next election in 2020, he announced his plan to step down after Britain voted to leave the European Union in a referendum on 23 June, 2016.

Whilst he desired that Britain remains in the EU, in line with his belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the EU, the British people made a different decision to toll a new path. This is synonymous to the biblical occurrence when Pilate wished to let Jesus Christ go, but the crowd agitated that he should be released for crucifixion.

Cameron didn’t allow the fame, the wealth and the privileges of the office to make him stay back or continue to chart a course he does not believe in. Hence the people clamoured for BREXIT, he decided to ‘CAMEXIT’ and nominated a successor in May Theresa.

In January 2016, Japan's Economy Minister, Akira Amari the brain-power behind Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s economic reforms, ‘Abenomics’ resigned amid corruption allegations. While he made the announcement in Tokyo, he denied personally receiving bribes from a construction company, as reported by a Japanese magazine.

Mr Amari being one of the PM’s most trusted members of parliament didn’t hold back the idea of resignation. He did it honourable and received applause from me (I don’t know about you anyway).

He was only accused by a local magazine that he was given money and gifts worth 12m yen ($101,000; £70,500) by a construction company in return for some favours linked to land ownership. This sum is not even up to what most of our public officers are accused of and still, they are plying their trade in government enjoying the media buzz.

The crux of my writing is that I support the demand for President Muhammadu Buhari to tell Nigerians the true state of his health and resign if he is too incapacitated to function as Head of Government. In as much as he has not made himself sick, it is obvious that the feebleness of a septuagenarian are playing hard on him which is occasioned by the demand of the position he occupies.

Let’s not forget that in 2010, President Buhari, had declared that the only solution to the political uncertainty in the country is for the National Assembly to set machineries in motion for the impeachment of late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. Again, in a publication in Daily Trust on Wednesday, May 22nd 2013, he called for the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan blaming him for the insurgency occasioned by Boko Haram and asked him to resign saying “Jonathan should vacate and give way to a competent hand to govern the country”.

I am sure he never envisaged that his aspiration to rule this country again as a civilian president would come to pass. Now the question, will President Muhammadu Buhari come out to speak the true state of his health and thereafter resign if indeed he is incapacitated? Nigeria has become a movie set, the drama goes on.

Nairaland GeneralNigeria’s Problem Is Beyond Corruption by Bossken(op): 3:18pm On Mar 14, 2017
A lot of energy is spent in talking about corruption and taking measures to combat same. Every quarter advocates that corruption is our biggest nightmare but it’s important to understand that there are other sister nightmares that are standing against the onward progress of the nation in terms of the leadership system and the attitude of the masses. These particular issues stare us in the face on daily basis and we pay lip services to them.

Practically, corruption is tagged our major challenge because it has sank into the foundation of our systems. Corruption as a plague has taken its toll on us as it comes in diverse forms. The plague trends on daily basis because it has infiltrated all government institutions, private sectors, economic sectors and religious institutions alike.

In Nigeria, each administration that comes into power has failed to perform their fundamental duties of delivering good governance that heralds the provision of basic social amenities to the public. Rather than performing and delivering on their electioneering promises, they are super busy amassing wealth (public funds) into their pockets, building empires at home and abroad and going on expensive vacations.

Amidst the efforts that have been deployed by past and present governments to combat the monster, the issue is not getting any better as new means of corrupt practices resurface into the system. I am forced to accept that we live in a failed state. How much longer do we have to fight corruption from one administration to the other?

I have come to terms that corruption is part of a system. Corruption is like a liquid that run through the veins of that system. Hence corruption for me is a culture and culture is simple the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, cutting across religion, language, cuisine, social habits, arts and music. These characteristics that make up culture are all right morals. Perhaps the only reason why corruption is not listed among the elements that make up culture in clear terms is because it is morally wrong and not acceptable in any society.

Prevalent in our system is political corruption, which is a persistent phenomenon in Nigeria. President Muhammadu Buhari once defined corruption as the greatest form of human right violation. Since the creation of modern public administration in the country, there have been cases of official misuse of funds and resources.

Corruption has eaten deep into our system that hardly will you find a Nigerian who is free from the practice. In our over 190 million population, I can bet that not up to 5% of the citizens can boast of not indulging in one or two acts of corruptions. It is a daily routine in our system but that does not give room to legalise it or term it a holy and acceptable practice because it a bad practice that we all must clamp down. This cannot be achieved in one day but we must consciously seek measures to deliberately work towards ameliorating the practice which is not peculiar to Nigeria alone.

While this has constantly posed as a threat to our economic and social stability, there are other issues that have eaten deep into our system thereby making us experience bad governance across the three tiers of government. On several occasions, these particular problems have threatened the existence of the entity called ‘Nigeria’. Our problem has also emanated from ethnicity and religious sentiments.

Part of the cause of our failed system can be linked to our multi-ethnicity and religious beliefs which has affected our unification as seemingly irreconcilable differences of priorities, visions and aspirations. Before the attainment of independence, Nigerian nationalist leaders from different regional, ethnic, and religious communities came together in a series of conferences and parliaments to discuss a common future and self-government. Then we could co-exist and chat a common course. But the case is seemingly different as we only co-exist in words and not in practice. We have become so drunk with self-centredness of religious and ethnic resentments that a Northern Nigerian Muslim nationalist leader declared Nigeria “the mistake of 1914”. In the same vein, a prominent Southern Nigerian Christian nationalist figure called Nigeria “a mere geographic expression.”

These resentments have made us to lose the brotherhood that once radiated among compatriots giving rise to nonchalant attitudes toward one another, public offices and resources. It has led to mismanagement of national resources, and misrule by multi-ethnic and multi-religious coalitions of successive governments since independence. These acts have impoverished the critical mass and denied them of basic social amenities.

The driving principle in contemporary Nigeria is the favouritism. The place of merit and credibility has been thrown into thin air. ‘He/she is my brother/sister; we are from the same community; we share the same faith (religion); she is my church member’. These are the common phrases we hear on daily basis. Well it is expedient that as long as we continue to ride on emotional connections which make us irrational in our thinking, we would continue to debate on the way forward. We need to go back to the status quo, we need to retrace our steps and bring about the Nigeria of our dream.

We cannot allow these to continue forever, the time is here for us to have a critical assessment of our system and ourselves. By critical assessment, I mean a real critical, truthful and self- assessment is an important step for us to take in order to heal the system and get result for the kind of Nigeria we dream of. If we don’t do this, we will continue from year to year, decade to decade and century ahead to discuss about these same problems. We must all collaborate to overcome all these issues and fix the system for us to reap the benefits of good governance and thereby bequeath these right values to the next generations.

FashionThe Rebirth Of Jumpsuit In The Fashion World by Bossken(op): 9:01am On Mar 07, 2017
Jumpsuit, also known as playsuit is a type of clothing, originally referred to the functional one-piece garments commonly used by factory/site workers and parachuters/skydivers. It is a type of clothing with sleeves and legs sewn together to become a one-piece. The common term for this one-piece garment when you visit a typical mechanic/artisan workshop in Nigeria is ‘over-all’ or cover-all’.

The original use of jumpsuits by skydivers, engineers and parachuters was for them to put on a simple garment designed to insulate the body from the cold of high altitudes and minimize risk of covering important handles and grips. To this end, jumpsuits are referred to as a garment of convenience, as they are simpler to launder, put on and remove than an ensemble outfit, which would probably need adjustment from time to time while on duty.

By mid 2000s when jumpsuits resurfaced into the fashion world, little did we know that they would take over trends in the fashion world. Jumpsuits have become a mainstay, particularly with celebrities who stun with them on red carpets and on different stage performances. In the contemporary age, the one-piece garment has found other uses as it is commonly seen on fashion runways by making occasional appearances in common and high fashion.

The special appeal about this one-piece garment is the ease of wearing it. Ladies now enjoy the fact that it is very easy to throw one on, put on some shoes, and that is it for the outing. One prominent thing about jumpsuits is that they show off your figure more than the average garment. The beauty of putting on a jumpsuit is when it is fitted and you come out looking smart.

For ladies, jumpsuit has become the perfect dress alternative because they can easily dress them up and down all week long, wear with a slick blazer for work then swap for killer heels and a statement jacket for the weekend.

The garment comes in different types of materials such as denim, prints, white, and khaki. Whichever material they are made from, they are suitable to be worn with high heel shoes/wedge and flat heel shoes as well as sandals.

However, the downside of putting on a jumpsuit is that the wearer becomes a baby when it is time to pee. How do you pee? Unlike unzipping a pair of pants or hiking up a skirt when visiting the restroom, a jumpsuit requires the wearer to completely remove the outfit. Looks kind of awkward but it is the reality of wearing a jumpsuit.

FashionAnkara Fabric: The Evolution, The Elegance by Bossken(op): 10:11am On Feb 15, 2017
The word Ankara is actually the name of a City, which is the capital of Turkey. The name is most commonly used to describe the popular fabric worn by many Africans. This has become so commonplace many people aside Turkish citizens remember that Ankara is actually the capital of Turkey.

The Ankara fabric, formerly known as Dutch wax print was originally manufactured by the Dutch for the Indonesian textile market. However, the multiple tribal prints on the fabric gained more prominence in West African nations than in Indonesia because of its tribal-like patterns and motifs which is a perfect reflection of African culture and lifestyles. Recognizing that the print resonates more with the Africans, the Dutch latched on the opportunity and redirected their compass to focus on West Africa.

Yesteryears, Ankara used to be commonly used to make ‘buba and wrapper’ for women and ‘agbada/kaftan and trousers’ for men. These styles were associated with elderly people and only a few young ones liked it because of the style. However that has changed with new generation trends, which have hijacked the usage of the Ankara fabric into the making of different fashion items such as blazers, jump suits (Dungarees), shoes, hood-dresses, jackets, jeans, shirts, headgears, flared skirts, fez caps, peplum blouses, gowns (long and short), pant trousers, high waist skirts, hats, earrings, and shoes.

The technique for making Ankara print fabrics is through a wax-resist dyeing technique called batik which is also a prominent technique used in making the Adire which is a common fabric of the Egba people of Abeokuta. Meanwhile, different methods are used to “resist” the dye from reaching the entire fabric, thereby creating patterns. The wax fabric can be sorted into categories of quality using the different processes of manufacturing. Wax fabrics are produced in such a way that the colours comply with the local preferences of the consumers. Wax prints can be named after and inspired by personalities, cities, building, sayings, occasions or well-known individuals.

In the last decade, the Ankara fabric has been playing heavily in the global fashion stage with lots of creativity displayed by designers and world celebrities. It is very flexible for design purposes and can serve different occasions and functions. It can be worn for regular occasions and formal ceremonies. Each ceremony such as birthdays, weddings, graduation, etc, in Africa especially Nigeria is an opportunity for attendees to flaunt different Ankara fabrics in different styles.

The original Ankara fabric comes in cotton materials but fashion brands and fabric makers now produce prints on fabrics like silk, chiffon and spandex, which are used for making clothes such as Iro, kaftans, leggings, bubas, swim suits, sports wears and socks.

Car TalkRe: Automatic Transmission And Gear Repairs In Nigeria by Bossken(m): 10:22am On Jan 20, 2017
My car, Honda Accord 2005 model (4plugs) doesn't move on any of the "grin" gears except reverse gear.
What do i do?

Urgent help pls.

Kashif:
Engine coolant is mixing with your ATF! It is not a nice place to be so, take the car to a good mechanic as soon as you can. Have money for a replacement radiator ready as you do. If you cannot have the transmission rebuilt and torque converter replaced, you should be looking at a whole unit replacement.

FashionTips On How To Wear Wedge Sandals by Bossken(op): 8:48am On Jan 17, 2017
Wedge sandals are shoes with heel running from the back to the middle or front of the shoe unlike high heels that only have a heel at the back bottom. Wedges have been around since the 1930s. For wedge shoes, the height ranges from a slight raise in the heel to several inches. Wedge popularity fluctuates. Hundreds of new wedge designs come out each year, depending on trends.

Wedge was created by an Italian designer; Salvatore Ferragamo who designed the orthopaedic wedge in 1935 and the wedge heel in 1936. At that time, he used cork and wood because of the shortage of in leather and rubber supply. Though cork was more popular than wood because it was lighter. The cork sole was also sturdy and durable.

Wedge shoes are the perfect option for ladies who have always been scared of wearing high heeled shoes because they add some height without causing you any difficulties when walking. The fantastic thing about these shoes is that they are exceptionally fashionable, can fit any style starting from the extremely elegant to those who love keeping it simple.

They can be worn to a variety of occasions and still have you looking absolutely gorgeous. They look great on any length of clothes that you may choose to wear; whether you love very long skirts or dresses or prefer to rock the shorter stuff, wedges will easily blend and make you trendy.
The benefits of wearing wedge shoes include improved body posture offer more support than stilettos or high heels. Balance is easier on a wedge, reducing the number of falls that accompany high heels. Wedges offer more arch support, reducing foot and ankle problems.

Jobs/VacanciesThings You Should Remove From Your Resume Immediately by Bossken(op): 9:46am On Jan 13, 2017
By Tayyiba Iram

Hiring managers rarely have the time or resources to look at each résumé closely, and they typically spend about six seconds on their initial fit/no fit decision. If you want to pass that test, you need to have some solid qualifications — and the perfect resume to highlight them.

Here are 34 things you should strike from your resume right now.

1. An objective
If you applied, it's already obvious you want the job.
If you're in a unique situation, such as changing industries completely, it may be useful to include a brief summary.

2. Irrelevant work experiences
Yes, you might have been the "king of making milkshakes" at the restaurant you worked for in high school. But unless you are planning on redeeming that title, it is time to get rid of all that clutter.
But as Alyssa Gelbard, career expert and founder of career-consulting firm Resume Strategists points out: Past work experience that might not appear to be directly relevant to the job at hand might show another dimension, depth, ability, or skill that actually is relevant or applicable.
Only include this experience if it really showcases additional skills that can translate to the position you're applying for.

3. Personal details
Don't include your marital status, religious preference, or Social Security number.
This might have been the standard in the past, but all this information could lead to discrimination, which is illegal, so there's no need to include it.

4. Your full mailing address
A full street address is the first thing Amanda Augustine, a career-advice expert for TopResume, looks for to immediately cut from a résumé.
"Nobody needs to have that on their résumé anymore, and, to be quite honest, it's a security concern," she tells Business Insider.

5. More than one phone number
Augustine suggests including only one phone number on your résumé, and that number should really be your cellphone, so that you can control who answers your incoming phone calls, when, and what the voice mail sounds like.

6. Your hobbies
In many cases, nobody cares. If it's not relevant to the job you're applying for, it's a waste of space and a waste of the company's time.
"Also, you don't want employers trying to contact you in five different places, because then you have to keep track of that," she says.

7. Blatant lies
A CareerBuilder survey asked 2,000 hiring managers for memorable resume mistakes, and blatant lies were a popular choice. One candidate claimed to be the former CEO of the company to which he was applying, another claimed to be a Nobel Prize winner, and one more claimed he attended a college that didn't exist.
Rosemary Haefner, chief human-resources officer at CareerBuilder, says these lies may be "misguided attempts to compensate for lacking 10o% of the qualifications specified in the job posting."
But Haefner says candidates should concentrate on the skills they can offer, rather than the skills they can't offer.
"Hiring managers are more forgiving than job seekers may think," Haefner explains. "About 42% of employers surveyed said they would consider a candidate who met only three out of five key qualifications for a specific role."

8. Too much text
When you use a 0.5-inch margin and eight-point font in an effort to get everything to fit on one page, this is an "epic fail," says J.T. O'Donnell, a career and workplace expert, founder of career-advice site Careerealism.com, and author of "Careerealism: The Smart Approach to a Satisfying Career."
She recommends lots of white space and no more than a 0.8 margin.
Augustine agrees, warning particularly against dense blocks of text.
"Let's be honest: You're looking this over quickly, you're glancing through it, your eyes glaze over when you get to a big, long paragraph," she says.

9. Too many bullets
In the same vein, you can also overload your résumé with too many bullet points, which Augustine calls "death by bullets."
"If absolutely everything is bulleted, it has the same effect as big dense blocks of text — your eyes just glaze over it," she says.
Augustine explains that bullets are only to be used to draw attention to the most important information. "If you bullet everything, everything is important, which means really nothing stands out," she says.

10. Time off
If you took time off to travel or raise a family, Gelbard doesn't recommend including that information on your résumé. "In some countries, it is acceptable to include this information, especially travel, but it is not appropriate to include that in the body of a résumé in the US."

11. Details that give away your age
If you don't want to be discriminated against for a position because of your age, it's time to remove your graduation date, says Catherine Jewell, author of "New Résumé, New Career."
Another surprising way your résumé could give away your age: double spaces after a period.

12. References
If your employers want to speak to your references, they'll ask you. Also, it's better if you have a chance to tell your references ahead of time that a future employer might be calling.
If you write "references upon request" at the bottom of your résumé, you're merely wasting a valuable line, career coach Eli Amdur says.

13. Inconsistent formatting
The format of your résumé is just as important as its content, Augustine says.
She says the best format is the format that will make it easiest for the hiring manager to scan your résumé and still be able to pick out your key qualifications and career goals.
Once you pick a format, stick with it. If you write the day, month, and year for one date, then use that same format throughout the rest of the résumé.

14. Personal pronouns
Your résumé shouldn't include the words "I," "me," "she," or "my," says Tina Nicolai, executive career coach and founder of Resume Writers' Ink.
"Don't write your résumé in the third or first person. It's understood that everything on your résumé is about you and your experiences."

15. Present tense for a past job
Never describe past work experience using the present tense. Only your current job should be written in the present tense, Gelbard says.

16. A less-than-professional email address
If you still use an old email address, like BeerLover123@gmail.com or CuteChick4life@yahoo.com, it's time to pick a new one.
It only takes a minute or two, and it's free.

17. Any unnecessary, obvious words
Amdur says there is no reason to put the word "phone" in front of the actual number.
"It's pretty silly. They know it's your phone number." The same rule applies to email.

18. Your current business-contact info
Amdur writes at NorthJersey.com:
"This is not only dangerous; it's stupid. Do you really want employers calling you at work? How are you going to handle that? Oh, and by the way, your current employer can monitor your emails and phone calls. So if you're not in the mood to get fired, or potentially charged with theft of services (really), then leave the business info off."

19. Headers, footers, tables, images, charts
These fancy embeddings will have hiring managers thinking, "Could you not?"
While a well-formatted header and footer may look professional, and some cool tables, images, or charts may boost your credibility, they also confuse the applicant-tracking systems that companies use nowadays, Augustine tells Business Insider.
The system will react by scrambling up your résumé and spitting out a poorly formatted one that may no longer include your header or charts. Even if you were an ideal candidate for the position, now the hiring manager has no way to contact you for an interview.

20. Your boss' name
Don't include your boss' name on your résumé unless you're OK with your potential employer contacting him or her. Even then, Gelbard says the only reason your boss' name should be on your résumé is if the person is someone noteworthy, and if it would be really impressive.

21. Company-specific jargon
"Companies often have their own internal names for things like customized software, technologies, and processes that are only known within that organization and not by those who work outside of it," Gelbard says. "Be sure to exclude terms on your résumé that are known only to one specific organization."

22. Social-media URLs that are not related to the targeted position
Links to your opinionated blogs, Pinterest page, or Instagram account have no business taking up prime résumé real estate. "Candidates who tend to think their personal social media sites are valuable are putting themselves at risk of landing in the 'no' pile," Nicolai says.
"But you should list relevant URLs, such as your LinkedIn page or any others that are professional and directly related to the position you are trying to acquire," she says.

23. More than 15 years of experience
When you start including jobs from before 2000, you start to lose the hiring manager's interest.
Your most relevant experience should be from the past 15 years, so hiring managers only need to see that, Augustine says.
On the same note, never include dates on education and certifications that are older than 15 years.

24. Salary information
"Some people include past hourly rates for jobs they held in college," Nicolai says. This information is unnecessary and may send the wrong message.
Amy Hoover, president of Talent Zoo, says you also shouldn't address your desired salary in a résumé. "This document is intended to showcase your professional experience and skills. Salary comes later in the interview process."

25. Outdated fonts
"Don't use Times New Roman and serif fonts, as they're outdated and old-fashioned," Hoover says. "Use a standard, sans-serif font like Arial."
Also, be aware of the font size, she says. Your goal should be to make it look nice and sleek — but also easy to read.

26. Fancy fonts
Curly-tailed fonts are also a turn-off, according to O'Donnell. "People try to make their résumé look classier with a fancy font, but studies show they are harder to read and the recruiter absorbs less about you."

27. Annoying buzzwords
CareerBuilder asked 2,201 US hiring managers: "What résumé terms are the biggest turnoffs?" They cited words and phrases such as, "best of breed," "go-getter," "think outside the box," "synergy," and "people pleaser."
Terms employers do like to see on résumés include: "achieved," "managed," "resolved," and "launched" — but only if they're used in moderation.

28. Reasons you left a company or position
Candidates often think, "If I explain why I left the position on my résumé, maybe my chances will improve."
"Wrong," Nicolai says. "Listing why you left is irrelevant on your résumé. It's not the time or place to bring up transitions from one company to the next."
Use your interview to address this.

29. Your GPA
Once you're out of school, your grades aren't so relevant.
If you're a new college graduate and your GPA was a 3.8 or higher — it's OK to leave it. But, if you're more than three years out of school, or if your GPA was lower than a 3.8, ditch it.

30. A photo of yourself
This may become the norm at some point in the future, but it's just weird — and tacky and distracting — to include a photo with your résumé for now.

31. An explanation of why you want the job
That's what the cover letter and interviews are for!
Your résumé is not the place to start explaining why you'd be a great fit or why you want the job. Your skills and qualifications should be able to do that for you — and if they don't, then your résumé is either in bad shape, or this isn't the right job for you.

32. Opinions, not facts
Don't try to sell yourself by using all sorts of subjective words to describe yourself, O'Donnell says. "I'm an excellent communicator" or "highly organized and motivated" are opinions of yourself and not necessarily the truth. "Recruiters want facts only. They'll decide if you are those things after they meet you," she says.

33. Generic explanations of accomplishments
Don't just say you accomplished X, Y, or Z — show it by quantifying the facts.
For instance, instead of, "Grew revenues" try, "X project resulted in an Y% increase in revenues."

34. Short-term employment
Avoid including a job on your résumé if you only held the position for a short period of time, Gelbard says. You should especially avoid including jobs you were let go from or didn't like.

FashionEverything You Need To Know Before Buying Ripped Jeans by Bossken(op): 12:16pm On Jan 12, 2017
We're here to settle the score on the rebel style move once and for all.
Once upon a time, some unsung style hero realized that just because his favorite jeans developed a hole in the knee or a few scrapes on the thigh, that there was no law requiring him to immediately toss them in the trash. In fact, he probably noticed that his old beaten-up denim actually looked pretty bad ass. The rest is of course history. Even since, guys have turned to ripped jeans in their efforts to channel punk rockers, grunge superstars, or even their favorite rapper. But these days there's an inundating amount of pre-ripped jeans on the market, and not all of them are perfect. Actually, ripped jeans, whether they're artfully draped on a rack in some designer store or they were crafted DIY style, are one of the easiest things to screw up. That's why we've put together these (extremely detailed) guidelines to live by the next time you're looking to tear things up in the denim world.

TYPES OF RIPS

Here's how we like to break the different kind of blemishes your jeans may have:
1. Holes, which are places in the pants where there is actually a visible window through the fabric (and as a result, to your legs).
Sub-rule A: holes should never be wider than the leg the jeans and look best when they're made horizontally across the leg.
Sub-rule B: Holes should never be more than an inch high when you're standing up. When you sit down they'll naturally expose more of your knee or leg, but anything more than a couple inches gets dicey.
2. Shreds, which are just places that the fabric has been torn, but threads remain, covering up the hole.
3. Scrapes, which are small abrasions or scratches on the surface of the fabric, usually between a dime and quarter in size.

RIP PLACEMENT
Here's where most guys slip up. They know they want a pair of jeans with rips, but end up either a buying a pair or making a pair where everything is out of place. By that we mean you need to ask yourself an important question before putting on a pair of ripped jeans. It's a simple one: Are these rips actual possible to create in real life? In other words, if you've got a massive hole exposing your man thighs (something even style god Kanye West

Fashion5 Best Ways Guys Can Rock Their Denim Jeans by Bossken(op): 12:03pm On Jan 12, 2017
It's often the simplest problems that are the trickiest to navigate when it comes to getting dressed. A perfect case in point of this is figuring out just what to do with the bottoms of your jeans. Rolling, cuffing, tailoring, and stacking are all easy maneuvers to get the job done—in theory. But executing style moves is often easier said than done. Truth is, just as in 2016 there are more options for what kind of pants to wear, there are also more decisions to make today in terms of finessing the hem of your jeans the right way. Here, we've laid out everything you'd ever need to know about navigating the new, ultra-diverse climate of cuffing.

The Double Roll
The degree of difficulty in double roll is 1-5. It looks with pretty much everything, but particularly with low-top sneakers and dress shoes.

How to do it: This is the kind of cuff most guys think of when they're talking about cuffing their jeans. We call it the double roll because you never should roll them up more than twice. If you're an average height guy wearing a 34" inseam jean, rolling them up four of five times will make you look like you're wearing ankle weights. The key to the double roll is going for a 1.5" cuff. The key there is making the first roll less than an inch and the second one just a touch bigger. Once you've rolled, spend a few seconds messing with them. Push one side down a touch on each leg and tweak until you've reach a healthy, elegant level of "whatever" attitude. After all, these are jeans—not suit trousers.

The Deep Cuff

The degree of difficulty is 5 and it looks best with Work Boots, Old School High-Tops, etc.

How to do it: The reason the oversized single cuff clocks are our most difficult is because it simply doesn't look good on most guys. Though this style lines the pages of Japanese magazines like Free & Easy, it channels a level of commitment to old school work wear most guys aren't comfortable achieving in this age and time. In other words, because it comes from the days when hard-working men cuffed their jeans out of necessity, not style, it looks best when worn alongside things like Red Wing boots, PF Flyers, denim shirts, chore jackets, and U.S. Navy-inspired beanies. (An oversized cuff would just look silly with some Yeezys.) Also, if you're shorter than six feet tall or refuse to skip leg day, adding a four-or-five inch cuff to your jeans won't do your stockiness any favors.

The Stack
The degree of difficulty in this is about 4 and it looks best with hyped-up running sneakers, timberland-style boots, and rock star boots

How to do it
: Stacking one's jeans used to be perceived as sign of laziness, or at worst, a lack of style. But over the past few years, a slim stacked jean has become an insider's shorthand for of-the-moment cool guy style. Now, a stack still only works with uber-slim denim, so if that's not your speed it's best to leave this to those who embrace a pencil-thin leg. Stacking can work with a minimalist pair of kicks like Common Projects, but it's best suited for sneakers with a built-in sock-like upper (think Yeezys, Flyknits, etc.). A new-wave hip-hop move is to pair them with a pair of box-fresh Timbs, while thanks to high-end rock star-inspired brands like Saint Laurent, the skinny stacked jean has become as much a part of of the look as some slim-profile suede boots.

PoliticsFleeing Migrants And The Brain Drain On Our Economy by Bossken(op): 10:34am On Dec 28, 2016
Day by day one is greeted on the internet with stories of migrants who died on their sojourn to Europe and America for greener pastures. Reports of migrants found dead around the deserts of North Africa and in the Mediterranean Sea are on the increase. This lives me with an unresolved puzzle as I keep wondering when it will all come to an end.

While pondering on this, a colleague asked my thought on the way out of this hard economic situation. She continued; "some people say jetting out of this country is the only way out, do you think they are right?" I looked straight into her eyes, I took a deep breath and I responded thus; all I know is that it might not be greener at the other end which you think is better. What we need is to strive harder and cut down on expenses so that we can survive and get sustained from the little we make as income.

The continuous attempts by people of all ages and tribes to live the country has resulted to brain drain of unknown technocrats, soldiers and above all, heroes/heroines who often times don’t even make it to their supposed destination of greener pastures. I am deeply pained that some of the lives lost could just be the very hands that we needed to fix the economic challenges in our country and other African countries where the issue of migrants are rampant.

Thousands of Nigerians seek refuge and asylum each year, and some migrate illegally, transiting through North Africa and then through the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. I recall vividly after graduation and awaiting NYSC call up letter in January 2009, my very close friend joined fellow compatriots to flee the country for Libya where he would depart to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. While he called that he was in Libya with a host of other migrants, I could perceive from his voice the relief of living the shores of Nigeria and seeing himself in a greener economy over the sea.

Then came the 'D-day' of voyage through the sea on a gigantic flying boat. Family members gathered to pray for safe sailing across the sea. I was not left out of interceding for him with my other friend as we prayed in our hearts and monitored the internet for related new on sailors. Little did we know that we were soon not going to hear from him again after we heard of a ship wreck, which in all sincerity could have involved his boat. This is the seventh year and nothing has been heard of my friend. No one even knows his fate whether he is alive and trying to make ends meet or it is the other side of the coin. Only God can tell.

In spite of this; the number of migrants is on the increase on a daily basis. It is no news that Nigeria tops the chat of African migrants to Europe, in terms of the age distribution; the majority are between the ages of 18 and 59. Some vulnerable people have also been identified, including children, female and elderly people.

We have read reports of migrants die from the harsh temperatures in the regions, which can reach a brutal 42C (108F), with blinding sandstorms tearing across the desert. The hostile conditions mean that only a fraction of those who die trying to cross the area are ever found. My heart faints each time I realise that part of the quake-sand in the deserts of northern Africa is formed from the decomposed bodies of fellow compatriots. It is sad to know that the Mediterranean Sea has swallowed thousands of our able-bodied men and women, resulting to the loss of unharnessed human treasures. In the course of 2016, An AFP report stated that over 142,000 migrants arrived Europe with an estimated 3,100 people perished in the Mediterranean Sea.

No thanks to this government and previous governments that have failed to improve the standard of living of the masses. More than 70% of Nigerians live below the national poverty line. Also, millions have been internally displaced due to religious and ethnic conflicts.
If you were to take a vox pop across the country to ask people for their usual New Year resolution, it will not be any surprise to hear over 50% of the population making plans to leave the country by 2017. One cannot totally blame the masses because the present situation has pushed many far beyond the walls. Nigerians with this mind don’t border about being packed in an overloaded wooden boat or rickety boats, all they want is to leave this forsaken country.

The way out is not farfetched but the implementation of the various ideas that have been advocated in the past has always been the challenge. Whilst the international community is making efforts to reduce the number of people embarking on this suicide mission, our own government should also intensify efforts to put an end to the brain drain exercise.

According to AFP report, EU has put in place plans to promote private investment of up to €60 billion (£48 billion) in countries where many migrants originate from - Ethiopia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal, as well as Jordan and Lebanon. They also want to speed up readmission deals with African countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, to make it easier to send back people who do not win refugee status.

Concerted efforts are also in the pipeline to unveil plans for a "blue card" system for skilled migrants to come to Europe legally. The aim is to reduce the incentive for people to try to smuggle themselves into the continent on flimsy boats and putting their lives at risk.
If EU is this concerned then our own AU and the government of the concerned countries should be more concerned. But we relatively get the opposite; nonchalant attitude from our government, which depicts how much we place less value on the lives of citizens.

FashionBest Ways To Wear Coloured Jeans To Sync With Your Style Personality by Bossken(op): 1:07pm On Dec 15, 2016
1. Add Neutrals to Look Sophisticated
Keep it classy by toning things down. Add a neutral top or jacket in ivory, white, black, tan, black, gray or navy to coloured jeans. Coloured Jeans - Coral (warm weather)

2. Mix Colours for a Fun Look
If you prefer a more playful look, wear a print top that includes the colour of the jeans. Or, if you want to go even bolder, colour block your outfit with a solid coloured top in a contrasting shade. For example, a yellow top with red jeans. Note: you need confidence to colour block, or you will look like a clown. Don’t force it. Here are some examples of coloured jeans and coloured tops styled well.

3. Try a Boyfriend Jacket for a Cool Look
Find a boyfriend jacket with turned up sleeves in a neutral colour, and pair it with coloured jeans + a white/cream top for an elegant look.

4. Animal Prints for a Hint of Sexy
A touch of leopard print thrown into a black and red mix is edgy and sexy.

5. Stripes for a Sporty Look
Stripes with coloured jeans looks modern and sporty. If the horizontal stripes make you look too wide, add a cute jacket that nips in at the waist.

6. A Chambray Shirt and Coloured Jeans for a Laid-Back Look
A soft chambray shirt + red jeans is a popular look.

7. Shows topping Accessories with Coloured Jeans for a Dramatic Look
Pair coloured jeans with a neutral top and big, dazzling statement jewellery for a head turning outfit.

EducationRe: Call To Rescue A Decaying Reading Culture by Bossken(op): 9:21am On Dec 14, 2016
@Gaara 101. Thanks for taking time to read through. your suggestion is very valid. indeed the essence of reading must be perceived beyond passing exam. i apreciate
Gaara101:
I love the article but I also want to add to it. Suggesting that reading should be added to the timetable is a nice idea but I don't think it should start there. I think that the importance of reading should be taught first. If that is not done, then reading will look like a chore, which shouldn't be so.
Students should be made to understand the significance of reading and not think of it as something you do to pass exams. I believe that until that is done, nothing is going to change.
FashionThe Wedding Make-up You Should Never Wear (ever) by Bossken(op): 4:54pm On Dec 13, 2016
By Jessica Lacey

It’s the day you want to look your absolute best for the cameras and the crowd – here’s how to avoid the most common wedding make-up pitfalls…

When we think about the bets celebrities weddings, Poppy Delevingne comes to mind. It’s unanimous at MC Towers that her dress was heavenly, those super shiny waves were exactly where beachy meets glam and her natural wedding make-up showed off just how beautiful she is.

So how do you do it too? Well, although there’s not a set formula to follow, avoid these sure-fire make-up clangers and you’ll be well on your way to nailing that bridal beauty look.

Say no to SPF
It’s the only day of the year we’d tell you to do this but avoid foundations with SPF built-in because the bulky particles don’t always sit smoothly on the skin but more importantly, are a nightmare with cameras. When the camera flashes, the zinc molecules in SPF reflect the light, causing skin to look white and ghostly. For the sake of good pictures, forgo the sun protection and stay out of direct sunlight.

This is NOT the day for falsies
Strip lashes are for a night out and have no place on a delicate bridal look. Most wedding ceremonies are in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest overhead which means that a heavy fan of lashes casts a big dark shadow over eyes. If your own lashes are on the puny side, add in a few strategic individual lashes or have the most natural of professional lash extensions.

Red lips, real problem
We all love a statement lip and with a white dress it can look super striking, problem is the photos. If you want the option of black and white photos (most people do) then watch out because red lips turn out black.

Too much fake tan
Controversial, yes, but a healthy spritz of fake tan is not a great idea with a white dress because…

a) it can make the dress look ultra white and blocky
b) you risk getting brown marks on the dress
c) your groom will look pasty in comparison

So, go couple of shades lighter than usual and have it done at least two days beforehand.

pan-cake-julietLeave the lip-gloss
Here’s the thing, having pictures outside means there’s going to be an element of wind blowing your hair or veil across your face and if you wear lip-gloss, it’s likely to be a sticking point. Also, it’s the one day you potentially kiss a hundred people and leaving traces on their cheeks is annoying for both you and them. Instead, opt for a lip stain that will stay in place no matter the number of embraces and will still look good in the evening pictures.

Cake good, caked bad
It’s a long day and make-up touch-ups are inevitable but there are better ways to combat shine than piling on the powder. Blotting papers are super slim line so fit in your clutch easily and take away oil without adding more layers on.
