Apple is currently under fire after news broke that the company was intentionally slowing down iPhones as their batteries aged, with lawsuits in New York and Israel already having been filed.

However the latest suit, filed in France by the environmental group Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmée (which roughly translates to “stop planned obsolescence”) could be far more significant for Apple, since planned obsolescence is illegal under French law, according to a report from TheLocal.fr.

Unlike in America or Israel, where the other lawsuits have been filed, France made it illegal to “deliberately reduce the lifespan of a product to increase the rate of replacement,” back in August 2015.

According to Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmée’s statement announcing the complaint, the maximum penalty for companies found guilty under French law is two years in prison, a fine of 300,000 euros, and five percent of the company’s annual turnover.

NSA Whistleblower Edward Snowden is among the backers of a new surveillance app that helps guard against computer hijackings.

Haven is an open source app that will run on any Android phone, particularly inexpensive and older devices. It operates like a surveillance system, using the device’s camera, audio recording capability and even accelerometer to detect movement and notify a user. The idea is that, even with the best encryption in the world, a device is vulnerability to physical, in-person tampering — also known as “evil maid” because literally a hotel maid could access it.

The app was developed by The Guardian Project, Freedom Of The Press and Snowden to offer eyes and ears to prevent, or at least increase awareness, of whether a device has been tampered with.

A drunken man has raped a 100-year-old woman to death in Uttar Pradesh State’s Meerut district, northern India, police said on Tuesday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,says it has arrested a Federal Pay Officer, Mr John Shiftanure, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, for alleged diversion of N1.8 million.
The commission’s spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed that Shiftanure was arrested on Tuesday at the Federal Pay Office in Uyo after its operatives stormed the place.
Uwujaren said the suspect failed to remit the N1.8 million to the Akwa Ibom Board of Internal Revenue Service (BIRS).
