Kx: @kingsleyinfo, I think kx's advice is a brilliant one. If IT is what you really want, try getting a job in that area not minding the 'salary' which may not be so encouraging at the onset. Since you have a focus and know where you're going to, you shouldn't be detered. At the same time, you'll be chasing up relevant IT certifications. ALL THE BEST |

Superbrain: @Superbrain, you're welcome! Relevant areas at the Masters level include Occupational Health / Environment Control / Environmental Management locally (in Nigeria). Internationally, there are more HSE specific post-grad courses like MSc Occupational & Environmental Health & Safety Management et.c. offered by institutions like University of Portsmouth, UK even on a part-time basis (distance learning). |

segzy411: @segzy411, you're welcome! Together, we can ALL do it better! If you are a practicing 'builder', then HSE is definitely relevant to your work. You may consider the basic HSE Appreciation / General HSE courses offered by bodies like NISP (WWW.NISPNIGERIA.COM) and a couple of other private organisations for starters. |

diehard: @mylove4him, I must say diehard's advice is indeed a gr8 one. My experience is also that in the course of trying to ensure compliance with expected HSE standards, diplomacy often comes in to play so that one is not seen as anti-progress particularly when there are 'operations' target or delivery deadlines in the picture. There are of course times one must stand one's ground on HSE matters in the workplace. |
Career / Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by brainwave(m): 2:34pm On Apr 13, 2010 |
pamelaa: @pameela, Exactly! the General HSE is more expensive than Levels 1 or 2 to start with though, I had mine at the Lagos chapter back then. If for geographical reasons, you can only deal with Warri & PH chapters, you may just have to comply with their requirements then. 1 Like |

pamelaa: @pamelaa Are you refering to NISP? If yes, to the best of my knowledge, it is not compulsary to take the General HSE before levels 2 & 3 (at least, I never did) if you already have a first degree. Is this a new rule? What's the source of your information, if I may ask? 1 Like |

funizzle: @funnizle you can check out WWW.GLOBALHSE.COM. I've not had any dealings with them personally so you'll need to do your due dilligence (check) on them as per accreditation et.c. Any other info from anyone in the house on other accredited NEBOSH centres in Nigeria is welcome! 1 Like |

diehard: @diehard you're welcome back to the forum Thanks for your insightful contributions. I think you're right about the fact that NISP is a good (and affordable ) place to start before going on to the likes of NEBOSH et al. One important lesson from your contribution is that you were more particular about the experience and not the pay at the onset. I think new comers to the field should take note of that. Its like setting one's eyes on a far horizon (where the MEGA pay may be) but to get started, the opportunity for that initial experience should be valued even if the pay isn't MEGA at that point in time. 1 Like |

Career / Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by brainwave(m): 4:24pm On Nov 18, 2009 |
TIDTID: Well, you can start the process by sourcing information relating to CASHES/HSE/'safety ofiicer' openings from coys in relevant industries like Energy (Oil & Gas), Construction and manufacturing. If you have no prior hands-on experience in the field, it may be more realistic for you to focus on entry level positions (though age could be a factor in some instances). The minimum pay of course would vary from one organisation to the other even within the same industry (sector). But generally speaking, in the energy sector, sometimes an entry level pay may be comparable to what obtains in the banking sctor. 2 Likes 1 Share |
