thanks @bubblekids and @brainwave.
i went to the nisp branch in ph to make enquiry yesterday and was told the there are two training going on there, that one was been organised by shell and the other by by the institude, i was told i would have to start from the scratch. my problem is that the fee for the trianing are far different. the shell organised one was far cheaper then the one by the institude, i wanted to opt for that but was told that thier training is not detailed enough as the one organised by the institude, i dont know whether to believe them cos the difference is really much.
for shell basic hse& hse appreciation(level1 &2) is 23,000
while the nisp general hse(level 1&2 ) is 35,500
@brainwave which do you advice i do?
@ezblessyn, I think you can as well go with the Shell option since you're just making your way into the field. In due course, if you feel there's a need to do the General HSE, all good and well. But for starters, you can have a good feel of what HSE is about even with the one being sponsored / subsidized by SPDC (Shell). i.e, Levels 1 & 2.

@brainwave. pls is there any hope for a french graduaduate with a master's degree in public and int'l relations in HSE.
i want to reinvent my career part as you suggested to this field where do i start from, your advice will be highly appreciated.
@ezblessyn, I think you should consider bubbleskid's advice:

bubbleskid:
HSE is a very interesting career path as you can realign and diversify in a very short space of time with just a few relevant/HSE specific courses. You,ll be amazed. You might even have an upper hand with a linguistics degree as certifications like NEBOSH which is foreign/expatriate-career bound (most of the time) will enhance your marketability, should you choose to work abroad.

I also notice that quite a few number of us deem HSE in a very generic term: Please be reminded that HSE is a discipline on its own. Like Engineering etc. It is segmented into specialty areas like Occupational Health & Safety, Risk Management, Emergency Response, Fire Fighting/Protection and Environment) .

(EMERGENCY and FIRE are offshore related areas and courses which facilitate this includes OPITO and ISTC).

CHOOSE A PATHWAY AND FOLLOW IT THROUGH. GOD HELP US ALL.

, Enjoy
In addition, should you opt for the HSE pathway, I'd urge you to be determined in following it through. But of course, I appreciate the likelihood that swithching career path may be a challenging task for many people. You may also want to check out WWW.NISPNIGERIA.COM

I am happy I have seen this thread for one reason. I need advice.

I have a friend - NISP and rounding up NEBOSH. Also studied Physiology in school. However my concern is jobs for the person!! Is there a site which displays HSE jobs in Nigeria? Or even better does anyone know any vacancies!! Feel free to drop a PM!

PS I am serious and am not a forum bot! Tks.
@Druss,, google up HSE Officer + Flourmills nigeria. This should give you some info about a current HSE opening. You need to act fast as this particular vaccancy closes in 1 or 2 days time. Cheers!

Stumbled upon this thread and av been following stealthly for a while. Greatjob guys.

@brainwave

I'm a medical doctor with 3yrs experience and now interested in HSE.

What training would u recommend (heard so much of NEBOSH)

What are the opportunities for doctors in HSE sector

Thx a mil
@ demzade, NEBOSH is popular in the HSE world but its a sizable investment (financially) for a lot of people so, before buying into it, one might need to ascertain that its the best training investment for one's career at that point in time. But I'd still say here again, that the NISP route might be a safer 'start-up' way for folks fascinated with / interested in HSE. The reason is that this way, they can find out more about HSE without necessarily bitting more than they feel they can chew (financially & otherwise)!

As for HSE opportunities for doctors, I am aware that a good number of HSE practitioners have environmental / technical / 'engineering' backgrounds but this is certainly not a rule. I remember vividly that my class rep during the last course I took at NISP, was a medical doctor. You may want to start looking at how HSE relates to occupational health and then, consider the related prospects.

hi i am intrested in hse especially the safety and environment aspect.am a chemical engineering student in my final year and would be really gratefully if i am actually told the right steps to take to become a full professional in da field especially ways of getting experience.
@brayan, As its been previously advocated on this thread, the NISP pathway is a reasonably good way to get started in this field. Getting aquainted with the body (NISP) i.e undergoing their courses et.c, should be beneficial to you because taking this step can help you link up with other HSE practitioners attending the course who can help you secure an HSE related job (I know someone who got his present HSE job this way). And if for any reason, you are not able to land a 'core' HSE experience in the very near future, your HSE training would nevertheless, prove valuable to your practice as an engineer.Cheers!

@ bubbleskid, you're right. I've been wondering for a while. Why is it difficult to get an entry-level job as an SHE professional? Most vacancies I see nowadays ask for at least 2 to 3 years of relevant experience. What is the hope for newbies like me who have interest in this profession but need to start up from somewhere?
@Superbrain, bubbleskid's advice to you is so SPOT ON! The truth is that the sensitive nature of HSE practice and probably, because of the dire consequences organisations may have to face should they get it wrong in this area, prior HSE 'experience' is highly priced by companies during employee recruitment nevertheless, there is still the possibility of entry level positions. Again, just to reiterate bubblekid's advise, NISP I think, is a good way to get started. Cheers! smiley

Any ideas why this forum has gone quiet in the last couple days? Hmm, Cmon guys! HSE is an area I believe we're all passionate about and we'll all do well to keep any discussions (relevant or irrelevant) going. I appreciate the complexity and magnitude of our diverse busy lives but hey, the reason we're all here is a shared common interest and vision into a prospectively lucrative career, contrary to contemporary believe.

So please let's all endeavor to drop a line on this thread at least once a day. That's the only way to keep this candle lit.
@bubbleskid, Thanks for your encouraging comments. Irrespective of our busy schedules & present job demands, we truly have to take our destinies in our hands as far as furthering the vision of a prospectively lucrative career in HSE is concerned. In that regard, I have just sent you a mail indicating my interest in having a 'soft' copy of the NEBOSH study  information you mentioned in your earlier post. I'll be expecting your feedback. Thanks! smiley

Thanks for this forum.

I am an HSSE practioner. over 5yrs on the Job in an O & G company. NISP is the best starting point for any science graduate aspiring to be an HSE professional. After acquiring some experince on the Job you can now go for NEBOSH certification though this is expensive.

There are other free safety training you can access on the net that can really boost your competence level. these are UK based training in all areas of safety management. the free training will not give certificate but if you need a certificate you will be required to pay a token . even without a certificate, the knowledge from this sight is very reach. increase your competence level via this free trainingS before going for NEBOSH. it will really help.

Just log on to www.oshatrain.com or type free safety training on googles. you will see OSHAcademy safety training. just click on it and access these free training. Any problem with the site email me on mikeakpezi@yahoo.com

To your success. Best fo luck!!!
@kpezi, Thanks for your contributions. You're very welcome!

Kx:
get an IT job,no matter how little while u focus on certifications
@kingsleyinfo, I think kx's advice is a brilliant one. If IT is what you really want, try getting a job in that area not minding the 'salary' which may not be so encouraging at the onset. Since you have a focus and know where you're going to, you shouldn't be detered. At the same time, you'll be chasing up relevant IT certifications. ALL THE BEST smiley

Hello house, this thread is great. I have a bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering and will be rounding up NYSC soon. I want to go the SHE way but I need heads up on how to do that. I'm planning to take the level 2 and 3 at NISP. I want to know what course an SHE professional can study at the masters level that will be relevant to the profession. Your responses will be appreciated.
@Superbrain, you're welcome! Relevant areas at the Masters level include Occupational Health / Environment Control / Environmental Management locally (in Nigeria). Internationally, there are more HSE specific post-grad courses like MSc Occupational & Environmental Health & Safety Management et.c. offered by institutions like University of Portsmouth, UK even on a part-time basis (distance learning).

Hey people,

You guys on this particular thread are great. I must tell you that av been following posts and comments on nairaland  for years as a guest, but this particular thread made me register and i must say you guys are doing a great job.

Am a builder and will like to know where to start from as i know little or nothing about the hse certification.
@segzy411, you're welcome! smiley Together, we can ALL do it better! If you are a practicing 'builder', then HSE is definitely relevant to your work. You may consider the basic HSE Appreciation / General HSE courses offered by bodies like NISP (WWW.NISPNIGERIA.COM) and a couple of other private organisations for starters.

Hi all,

i'm so enthusiastic about this hse training. Presently, i'm preparing to engage in a hse professional training to be sponsored by shell and IOSH( Institute of occupational training and health) which is taking place around june. There are up to 20 courses. I really dnt knw how it is graded in term of level 1 or 2. As a corper who has already had 6months experience in a reputable oil & gas firm as a maintenance trainee. What level do u guys think i should go for?
@kkkossy, You didn't state your backgroud (discipline), you may as well start from level 1. ALL THE BEST!

@mylove4him, The best way to stay relivant in your new place of work is to find ways to improve their safety performace without affecting their production activities. and always get the buy-in of the poeple that matters to support any new initiative u want to introduce and of cos they ve to belive it's for the over-all good of the company. take care
@mylove4him, I must say diehard's advice is indeed a gr8 one. My experience is also that in the course of trying to ensure compliance with expected HSE standards, diplomacy often comes in to play so that one is not seen as anti-progress particularly when there are 'operations' target or delivery deadlines in the picture. There are of course times one must stand one's ground on HSE matters in the workplace.

@brainwave, I called portharcourt and warri NISP offices and was told thesame thing. And its more expensive to begin with the general hse.tot i cud begin frm level 2 or even level 1.
@pameela, Exactly! the General HSE is more expensive than Levels 1 or 2 to start with though, I had mine at the Lagos chapter back then. If for geographical reasons, you can only deal with Warri & PH chapters, you may just have to comply with their requirements then.

@pamelaa
Are you refering to NISP? If yes, to the best of my knowledge, it is not compulsary to take the General HSE before levels 2 & 3 (at least, I never did) if you already have a first degree. Is this a new rule? What's the source of your information, if I may ask?
