fender:
Hello house,

I've been following this thread for a while and recently my interest in HSE got peeked by my friend who is keen on taking up a course especially the NEBOSH certification. I have a degree in marketing and coming from that background, what are my chances of making the best of the profession and where do you advise I start from ?? I just needed to ask because I have already started gathering materials for NEBOSH to start preparing well ahead of time for September as I'm considering a change swift change in my career path to get the much anticipated satisfaction (not monetary). Your kind and honest advise are welcomed.

Thank you.
@fender, people make tough decisions every day including changing their career path. With focus, determination, right information and courage you can realize your dream of a fulfiling career switch. We hear of medical doctors switching to business/finance, likewise engineers et.c. So, if you have the conviction of going for NEBOSH certification, my advice would be for you to go for it! Above all, with GOD, absolutely nothing is impossible. Cheers!

I am an electrical engineer but graduated with a third degree, if u know what i mean.recently got employed with a small electrical construction firm, though its a good place to start i can now do pmp,or nebosh or prince 2 or nsip, etc etc,as finances is not a constraint, besides both pmp and hse re relevant to electrical construction,my question is considering my third degree,if i do nebbosh and nsip and pmp and throw in like 4 to 5 years experience,do i have an opportunity with a multinational oil firm, pls i need replies and insights asap
@akubunachi, if you can secure the qualifications you have listed in view i.e, pmp, nebosh and prince 2 or nsip, you certainly would have brightened your chances of getting a job (in a multinational Oil firm or elsewhere) nevertheless, there are no guarantees when it comes to these matters as some of these organisations have their policies regarding class of first degrees of their employees. The common advice I give in situations like yours is that people should prepare/equip themselves (e.g qualfication/certification-wise) so that when the opportunity shows up, they're good to go for it!

I am a chemical engineering grad though I am working. I just want to know the process of registration for NISP. Which level do I start from based on my qualification? How do I register? Is it an exam based course? What is the duration of each course? Cost?
Thanks
@x=fire, you may start the NISP course from level 2 considering your backgroung/discipline (chemical engineering). You register at the NISP centre closest to your base. Yes, it is an exam based programme at some point i.e, if you want to go all the way to become an associate member except you've got considerable field experience as an HSE practitioner which may qualify you for an exam waiver. I'm frankly not in tune with the course cost/fees at the moment. The courses at the Lagos centre are usually organized on a monthly basis while membership exams take place twice a year!.

yamakuza:
HSE Levels 1 to 3 are general/peripheral in scope, so you can fit into a lot of industries with it.

OHSM by NISP is more specific/specialized.

You were probably advised to go for OHSM based on the discussion you had (what you want to use it for?), details of which we are not privy to.

NISP runs in-house courses so maybe you were referred elsewhere because your schedule doesnt fit theirs?

Why not download their 2012 Course Schedule.

Unless the OHSM you are referring to is the one by OSHA, which is at par with NEBOSH; the godfather certs of HSE.
Big Up! yamakuza & ALL, tnx 4 keeping the flag of this thread flying. Cheers!

Hello guys
For sometime now av been following this thread and i just feel i should contribute my own quota of help.

I have done NISP courses level 1 and2 and am a member of the institute.
I want to take the NEBOSH certificate exam but i saw someone quote the price he did his @ 300k or thereabout on this thread and men fear catch me.

@Superbrain, you're welcome! Relevant
areas at the Masters level include
Occupational Health / Environment Control /
Environmental Management locally (in
Nigeria). Internationally, there are more HSE
specific post-grad courses like MSc
Occupational & Environmental Health &
Safety Management et.c. offered by
institutions like University of Portsmouth,
UK even on a part-time basis (distance
learning).
@brainwave, please i would like to know which institutions in nigeria offer relevant masters degree in health safety and the environment
@brayan, I am aware of Nigerian unis like UNILAG et.c offering HSE relavant Masters in Environmental Management while the likes of OAU also offer MSc. in Environmental Control & Management however, I do not know of any accredited/ recognized Nigerian uni (private or public) offering a core / HSE specific PG course. Although, one would expect that the newer specialized universtites e.g those springing up in the niger delta, will grow their capacities to such a level that they'll be able to offer HSE specific courses at the Masters level. Anyone with info on Nigerian universities offering HSE at the PG level should please enlighten us, thanks!

@Wesley_nic, , Welcome to the forum, you have asked a whole lot of questions, i'd suggest you patiently take the time to go through this thread again from page 1 (dating back to 2008) if you've not already done so perhaps, you might get some answers to your questions there in. Afterwards, you may still ask further questions on any specific grey areas, what do you think?

@ALL please, feel free to answer any of NICOLAS' questions. Cheers!

Kudos to all our highly esteemed contributors. I really enjoy this forum, its like we are one family. Please, we would love if our professionals can discuss with us how they started with HSE, what is operational (what HSE is all about), what to expect, the interesting and otherwise parts of HSE, the career prospects, how to move up along the HSE ladder and lots more, so that we the new entrants and other interested people can learn from.

Candid contributions are welcomed.

To my brother, Brainwave, God bless u. Though, I have not seen you to face, but believe someday, we'll see. Keep the fire burning.
@Engraced01, Thankx & God bless you too. In retrospect, I'd say divine providence played a majour role in my venture into HSE although, I had a somewhat relevant background, talking about a first degree in the environmental sciences, the entry-level opportunity I got was definately, GOD-given, time would fail me to go into details right now. I followed up with 'hands-on' practical training on-the-job  coupled with company-sponsored / personally sponsored HSE training (courses), well the story is still unfolding but its indeed an interesting field to work in though it could sometimes be quite stressful as one often works unconventional/unsocial hours but hey, as they say,  'no pain', 'no gain', sorry this is the much I have time to squeez in 4now. Cheers!

yeah buddy, i am NEBOSH certified mechanical engineer working as HSE Engineer in the field of Oil and gas, i just meant to say that we should also share job  openings in the HSE field because many position are filled with in the companies with reference or contacts , we being a professional like myself who are working in HSE environment should share the job openings so that the persons who are looking for job or who are new to HSE may drop their resumes accordingly , what you say bro,
@sohail512, Great idea! @ALL,, please those of us already working in the field (HSE) are encouraged to share any HSE-related job openings here. U never can tell whose life u can help transform by doing just that. Thanks in advance!

@ Brainwave, thank you very much for your concern sir. I actually finished with my NYSC two months ago and since then, I have not taken up any job yet. I had B.Tech Agricultural Engineering but I have never had any work experience relating to HSE. My I.T and NYSC service year work experiences were basically on mechanization.  However, I have a passion for HSE and this is the reason why I am asking for an opportunity to start a career in HSE.
Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
@Engraced01, , O.K I understand now. One advice I'll give is that u make use of the networking opportunity NISP study would afford u i.e, make friends with course mates while on d training, get their contacts and keep in touch with them even after the course. Look out for those who seem serious minded or are already working in HSE in the class and keep in touch with them for HSE job opening info. I have a colleague who got his HSE job this way i.e, through a friend he met during the NISP course. And of course, not 4getting the GOD factor in all these, just give it ur best shot, brother. Cheers!

@cindy200, to your question of the best place to start & how to go from there, I will reiterate what I've said on this thread i.e, for folks that want to test the HSE waters or generally satisfy their curiousity about the discipline et.c, NISP courses are still one of the best and least expensive I know of. Endeavour to take time to read through this thread from the begining (if you can) & you'll get a better idea of how to get into the HSE line / how the whole thing works. Cheers!

Please, after HSE levels 2 n 3 with certificates collected. what next? can that give me a job? Do I have to go for NISP membership?
I need something doing with these certificates to fetch me money. sad
@Chimonie, as with other certificates (qualifications), HSE levels 2 & 3 certificates will not automatically translate into a 'JOB' neither does NISP membership. The idea is generally (for most people), one of positioning themselves to be able to qualify for the job or other opportunities when they do show up.

Haven said that, you will of course have to consider your general circumstance and weigh the pros & cons before deciding that investing your time & resources in going for the NISP membership at this point in your career/life is worthwhile.

Hi  All great work by all of you that have conributed so far, I am a Biochemistry Graduate and would want to go the HSE way, please senior members advise me on which part would be most relevant to my background?
Also, is there any NISP study center in Abuja.
I will appreciate your responses, thanks.
@Nosyke,  to begin with,I think you should take a General HSE course before looking at 'specializing'. I believe NISP should have a centre in Abuja (according to info on the website!) . Check out WWW.NISPNGERIA.ORG.
