CareerRe: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by brainwave(op): 12:52pm On Jul 26, 2012
Milito: I indeed found this very useful. I have a keen interest in the 'Environment' aspect of HSE, but as u said it seems its not as favoured as the Occupational Health and Safety Aspect.

Brainwave and co. u are really doing a wonderful job on this thread. I actually started reading the thread from when u started it till present time (although i jumped 1 or 2 pages in 2010, lol). And I must confess I am really impressed. Brainwave and the other experienced guys in this field, pls I would like u to shed more light on the quote above. I was actually eager to read a response to this but was disappointed tht no response was given.

As I said earlier, I am more interested in the 'Environment' aspect of HSE. I studied BSc Environmental Biology and MSc Envt Pollution Mangt. But I have been stuck in Customer Service for a reputable company for 2 years plus now but I REALLY want to work in my field as my interest lies there. I have even done NISP Levels 2 and 3 (3yrs ago) and another Occupational Safety and Health certification last year but I'v been unable to move basically due to my lack of experience in this line.

Brainwave pls enlighten me:
- is the Envt aspect of HSE relegated in Nigeria?
- NEBOSH as u said is an expensive investment, is NEBOSH International General Certificate a Plus/value for someone interested mainly in the Envt aspect of HSE?
- whats ur professional opinion btw NEBOSH and IEMA?
@Milito, thanks for your inputs and observation. Sorry, no one responded to the earlier poster's enquiries but its good you've revived it. I'll attempt to provide answers to your enquiries. Note the word 'attempt', no one knows it all (including moi wink). Learning is continous:

- is the Envt aspect of HSE relegated in Nigeria?

Well, I do not think the 'E' aspect of HSE is exactly 'relegated' in Nigeria i.e, in relation to Health & Safety. I think its mostly a matter of the order of things or 'priority'. By this I mean its likely that organizations would focus first and foremost, on the Health and Safety of their workforce before considering the impact of their 'production activities' on the 'environment'. Nevertheless, the importance of the 'E' element in HSE cannot be underplayed because the interaction between 'man' and the 'environment' is 'circularly causal' that is, just as the condition or state of the environment affects or impacts man, man's activities also impact and determine the condition of the environment. In the sector I work, I can assure you that gevernmental/regulatory agencies constantly make certain that we do not neglect the 'E' function in HSE. They keep organizations on their toes in relation to 'environmental issues' such that one cannot but pay attention to the 'environment' aspect of HSE. Nevertheless, there's still mush room for improvement with regards to the level of 'environmental' awarenes in the land (Nigeria).

- NEBOSH as u said is an expensive investment, is NEBOSH International General Certificate a Plus/value for someone interested mainly in the Envt aspect of HSE?

I think each person has to have an idea of his/her desired career goals or destination before setting out on the best stategy or 'pathway' to arrive at that end or to achieve the set career goals. For someone mainly interested in the 'E' element of HSE as you said, the person still has to weigh the options available and determine whether or not, an investment in a 'NEBOSH' qualification would be of value now or in the future for him/her. Sometimes, its really about 'opportunity cost'.

- whats ur professional opinion btw NEBOSH and IEMA?[/quote]We are in a rapidly changing world where the turn-around rate of knowledge and information is amazing and getting faster by the day. Yesterday's knowledge may not be adequate for today's challenge. I percieve IEMA as a specialist association for 'environmentalist' or 'environmental professionals or managers' while NEBOSH is also a professional qualification but generally more renown as a qualification with emphasis on Health and Safety . Like I earlier said, I think people should determine their desired 'career' destination, evaluate where they are presently, and plan/work out a 'flexible' strategy to get there. I say a 'flexible' strategy because its sometimes not advisable that people box themselves too tightly into a corner 'career-wise'. One of the ways of leaving a window open for other career options is by broadening one's knowledge/area of expertize i.e, by aquiring additional qualifications/skills that could enable one to diversify or switch career paths in the future if necessary. You may be an enviromentalist today and tommorow, situations change and a window of opportunity opens to practice difeerently e.g, as an occupational health and safety specialist or vice-versa. Will there be any certifications or qualifications you can leverage on if you do need to change careers in the near or not so near future? In the final analysis, I'd say 'one size doesn't fit all' in these matters.

hazelle: Dear everyone, I'm a Petroleum and Gas undergraduate. I'm interested in taking the SHE course but first from NISP. The problem is this, I went online-to their website and saw so many health and safety courses with their individual prices. Now I'm confused on which to pick. Thought it was just a general stuff. Y'all should please advice me on what to do. Thanks.
@hazelle, there is actually a 'GENERAL HSE' course offered by NISP which affords participants the opportunity of have 'general' feel of HSE. I'll advise you re-check your source to verify this or alternatively, you may put a call through to NISP. Cheers!

greatlee: @ Brainwave, pls am waiting for your response. God bless
greatlee: This tread is the most hilarious and educating tread i have come across here on NL. @ poster, may God bless and enrich you always.

Please i need your advice. I am a graduate of Geology/Physics from a reputable university in Naija but after spending 3 years in the country without a job, i jetted out of the country where i am not doing bad presently. While i was in Naija, just immediately after my NYSC, i took the HSE leve 2 and 3 certification courses but it did not make job hunting any easier. Now that i have come across this tread, my interest in HSE have just been rekindled. I have made enquiries about the NEBOSH and it will cost me about $1,700 USD. I also would like to take the course alongside another HSE course; Auditor/Lead Auditor OH&S Management System OHSAS 18001 which will cost me about $600 USD. Please i need an advice if this is worth investing into as i will be retunrning to Naija by the end of this year and hope to find a job and stay back home with my new family. Is ot better to do the training here or back in Naija?

Please advice me. God bless you
@greatlee, I'm of the opinion that you could as well get your NEBOSH certification where you're based before returning to Nigeria. I particularly do not see any advantage or 'edge' you will gain by obtaining the qualification in Nigeria. As to the question of the 'worthiness' of investing in the HSE certifications (i.e, NEBOSH & Auditor/Lead Auditor OH&S Management System OHSAS 18001), it all depends on your career path on returning to the country. But again, the truth is, there are no guarantees on these issues, one often has to take calculated risks, plan or work out a 'practicable' strategy & then leave the rest to God. That's my thought. Cheers!

jimbass: @Big-Biye and Brainwave, I would need your advice on how to get a job in the health and safety field, I have Got NEBOSH IGC in occupational health and safety.
@jimbass, I wish I knew a 'fire-proof' formular for getting a job in HSE.....nevertheless, I'd urge you to try and grow your 'net-work' of HSE professionals and 'enthuthiasts'. By enthuthiasts, I mean people who are interested in or passionate about HSE (they don't necessarily need to have HSE jobs). Secondly, if you find any opportunity to volunteer on any project that has HSE practitioners involved, you can get to understudy them (yes, even without pay!). Such non-paid HSE work experience can very well, go on you CV and help build an experience in HSE which may catch the eye of potential employers.
Don't get tired of sourcing for HSE-related openings and haven said this much...keep PRAYing!
All the best brother!

envee: Brainwave, I never got to thank you for your advice but I believe its better late than ever.

Thank you so much.! I am now NISP certified and also did an online program from OSHA and I haven't regretted taking those decisions. The journey still continues for me as NEBOSH is the next item on my agenda.

My main interest is in the Maritime (Safety) Industry because of the little theoretical and practical knowledge I have gained in Shipping . I am currently serving and can't help feeling eager to begin to practice as soon as possible.

To all those that have taken time out to enlighten others on this thread, I say a big THANK YOU to y'all.

You've been a huge source of inspiration to us..
@envee, what can one say....your testimony (yes, I'd call it that!smiley) is heart-warming to say the least. Don't be a stranger on this HSE forum 'cos we all are 'learning' here and together, we can do it better! Cheers!

@cynthia, I'd say welcome on board the HSE train on nairaland!
Generally speaking, one can say that Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental Management is essentially, the same as HSE (Health, Safety & Environment). If you're talking of an MSc in either OHS&E or Environmental Management, those are different courses altogether albeit, with overlapping contents.
As for whether Masters in either of these fields gives you automatic access to IOSH graduate membership status, I sincerely cannot say.
On the issue of the availability of these OHSE courses only abroad & not locally (in Nigeria), I'd say I presently know that Institute of Petroleum Studies, UNIPORT offers the course at professional MSc level.

Dickson oil: Hi ALL , please i need more on what course to do while am still expecting a job offer? am a graduate of petroleum engineering
i have done some HSE courses.but i thing i should still while am at home. please course can i also do.
I HAVE A KEEN INTEREST IN STCW 95(that's marine course) does it have any impact on my profession ?
@Dickson oil, if you're satisfied with the level of knowledge you've gathered in HSE for now, it may not be a bad idea if you go for the Marine course since you stated that you have a 'KEEN' interest in the course (that's assuming you have the resources to take on the course though). As to whether the course would have any impact on your profession, I'd say only time can tell.....

I av tried to get a job bt nothings forth coming. Pls I need good advise on wot to do next if any1 has any idea? Confused
@cindy200, Hmmmnnnnnnn.....it might be easier giving you an advice if one has an idea of the options playing around your mind. What do you think your options are? If you can answer this question (as per the options you have), then I would expect that the good people of 'HSE' kingdom on nairaland will throw in helpful advices. Just my thoughts.........

half caste, NISP is always a 'safe' option because 'we' know NISP. That's not to say there may not be other credible options out there but like they say, its sometimes better to start from the 'known' to the 'unknown'.

Fudey: Pls house,am a graduate of Botany n i hv interest in Environment cos i am interested in securing a job with any Environmental Agency.to channel my career path to Environment do u think runing dis hse with nisp will pave way 4 me or to do a 2nd degree in Environmental management?if am 2 go for Hse where do i start 4rm and i need info as regards Abuja center/office. Pls ur info n advice wil go along way 2 help a frnd.thanks
@Fudey, I'll advise that you pursue your 2nd degree in Enviro-Mgt simultaenously with the NISP programme (if funds & other situations permit you). The HSE route with NISP is relatively flexible in terms of the demands on one's time & finances. All the same, you can pay a visit to NISP's Abuja centre for further clarifications. The Abuja office address (as found on NISP website - www.nispnigeria.org -) is:

Abuja FCT Branch

ABUJA FCT BRANCH
Flat 1, 3rd Floor, BUSYMART Plaza,
No. 44, Ebitu Ukiwe Street,
Jabi - Abuja
