deetosh: @deetosh, u're welcome on board! My dear, I assume Computer Science was your 1st degree, after which you are at liberty to re-invent your career path if you so desire. Therefore, my answer to your question would be to advise you to do some more research on the 3 key areas of HSE and see which of them naturally interests you most, that may just determine for you, the area to focus or specialize on should you decide to follow the HSE pathway. Cheers! |

Kingzy4pep: @Kingzy4pep, the salary of graduates with NISP/HSE certifications vary. It depends on a lot of factors e.g your prior qualifications/discipline, relevant / prior work experience (if any), the industry (e.g, oil & gas, construction, manufacturing et.c) and of course the salary structure of the particular organization (company) of interest. |

waledudu: @waledudu, u're welcome! Yes, its possible to be employed in an HSE role without prior hands-on experience i.e entry level. As for the other area of HSE you can go into after level 3, do you mean, how you can go further in HSE? If yes, after your level 3, you can proceed to write the project and membership exams to become an associate of the institute (NISP). 1 Like |

kunle4u: @kunle4u, I'll try to send some info on NEBOSH course centres in Nigeria (to your email box) ASAP. But I'll advise you not to take things at face value i.e, do your findings on the quality of service offered by the various centres before deciding which to deal with. |

kkkossy: @kkkosssy, no wahala! What's important is that u'v taken a step forward. I remember a quote that goes something like this: "If you cannot fly, run, if you cannot run, walk, if you cannot walk, crawl, but by all means, keep moving". Cheers! PS- By the way, can you give more details on what the HSSE programme u'r taking is all about? 1 Like |

kkkossy: @kkkossy, I am presently not aware of an HSE accreditation body around that authenticates HSE training providers. If you feel the training would be of benefit to you, you can as well give it a try. |

eonaiviv: @eonaiviv, I do hope the HSE bill sails through. I believe we truly need more awareness on workplace HSE matters 'nationally' because the general standards one sees around is still very far from 'ideal'. As individuals we can keep spreading HSE awareness in our spheres of influence. I must appreciate your commitment to personal development, do keep it up! |

kkkossy: @kkkossy, I do not recall any1 I know undergoing any training by Spherical but its good to know that WE have one of US on this forum (eonaiviv) who has had dealings with them. I do think her opinions will be worth considering. I'd suggest you ask her here, any further questions that may be bogging your mind about the training before you commit your time & funds to it. Cheers! |

eonaiviv: @eonaiviv, u're welcome to the forum. Adding value to yourself while searching for a relevant job to 'practicalize' makes sense. What sort of work experience do you have presently, i.e, in what area? |
Career / Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by brainwave(m): 11:42am On Jun 30, 2010 |
eonaiviv: @eonaiviv, if you are just starting out in the field, I don't think you necessarily have to 'specialize' in one area of HSE. The job opportunities available to you at the onset in the field may determine how soon you may need to 'pick one' area as you desire. |
Career / Re: Any HSE Professionals In The House? by brainwave(m): 11:40am On Jun 25, 2010 |
kkkossy: @kkkossy, I am of the opinion that HSE is very relevant to any practicing engineer therefore, I think you will be better off undergoing such a training (course). |

ezblessyn: @ezblessyn, I think you can as well go with the Shell option since you're just making your way into the field. In due course, if you feel there's a need to do the General HSE, all good and well. But for starters, you can have a good feel of what HSE is about even with the one being sponsored / subsidized by SPDC (Shell). i.e, Levels 1 & 2. |

ezblessyn: @ezblessyn, I think you should consider bubbleskid's advice: bubbleskid: In addition, should you opt for the HSE pathway, I'd urge you to be determined in following it through. But of course, I appreciate the likelihood that swithching career path may be a challenging task for many people. You may also want to check out WWW.NISPNIGERIA.COM 3 Likes 1 Share |

demzade: @ demzade, NEBOSH is popular in the HSE world but its a sizable investment (financially) for a lot of people so, before buying into it, one might need to ascertain that its the best training investment for one's career at that point in time. But I'd still say here again, that the NISP route might be a safer 'start-up' way for folks fascinated with / interested in HSE. The reason is that this way, they can find out more about HSE without necessarily bitting more than they feel they can chew (financially & otherwise)! As for HSE opportunities for doctors, I am aware that a good number of HSE practitioners have environmental / technical / 'engineering' backgrounds but this is certainly not a rule. I remember vividly that my class rep during the last course I took at NISP, was a medical doctor. You may want to start looking at how HSE relates to occupational health and then, consider the related prospects. 1 Like |

brayan: @brayan, As its been previously advocated on this thread, the NISP pathway is a reasonably good way to get started in this field. Getting aquainted with the body (NISP) i.e undergoing their courses et.c, should be beneficial to you because taking this step can help you link up with other HSE practitioners attending the course who can help you secure an HSE related job (I know someone who got his present HSE job this way). And if for any reason, you are not able to land a 'core' HSE experience in the very near future, your HSE training would nevertheless, prove valuable to your practice as an engineer.Cheers! |

Superbrain: @Superbrain, bubbleskid's advice to you is so SPOT ON! The truth is that the sensitive nature of HSE practice and probably, because of the dire consequences organisations may have to face should they get it wrong in this area, prior HSE 'experience' is highly priced by companies during employee recruitment nevertheless, there is still the possibility of entry level positions. Again, just to reiterate bubblekid's advise, NISP I think, is a good way to get started. Cheers! |

bubbleskid: @bubbleskid, Thanks for your encouraging comments. Irrespective of our busy schedules & present job demands, we truly have to take our destinies in our hands as far as furthering the vision of a prospectively lucrative career in HSE is concerned. In that regard, I have just sent you a mail indicating my interest in having a 'soft' copy of the NEBOSH study information you mentioned in your earlier post. I'll be expecting your feedback. Thanks! |
