Foreign Affairs / Michelle Obama’s Mother, Marian Robinson, Dies by brave212: 7:39am On Jun 01
CNN

Marian Robinson, the mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, has died, according to a statement from the Obama and Robinson families. She was 86.

As a sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to so many, she was beloved beyond words by countless others whose lives were improved by her presence,” the statement from Barack and Michelle Obama, Craig and Kelly Robinson, and their children said in part.

“She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” the statement said.

Michelle Obama posted on social media, “My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today.”

“There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example,” Barack Obama wrote on X.

Robinson lived with the Obamas during their time at the White House and was often spotted at events with the first family, including handing out goodie bags to trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

We needed her. The girls needed her,” the family’s statement said of her move to Washington. “And she ended up being our rock through it all.”

A native of Chicago – where she returned after the Obamas left the White House – Robinson was married to Fraser Robinson, and the pair had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser Robinson died in 1991 after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Marian Robinson was heavily involved in her kids’ education, according to the statement. The family recalled Robinson as having taught “her children to read at an early age, sitting together as they sounded out words on a page, giving them the strength and confidence to walk to school.” They also highlighted her presence in a historic moment.

On Election Night in 2008, when the news broke that Barack would soon shoulder the weight of the world, she was there, holding his hand,” the statement read.

David Axelrod, former Obama senior adviser, remembered Robinson as “just a great lady.”

She was a South Sider through and through,” Axelrod, a CNN senior political commentator, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” on Friday, adding that during her time at the White House, “she did not take to the whole celebrity lifestyle.” Instead, Axelrod said, “she would often slip out of the White House on her own and visit with friends. … She really wasn’t looking for attention.”

Years after the unveiling of the Obamas’ portraits at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in 2018, Michelle Obama recalled how impactful her mother’s reaction had been when she took her to the museum after hours.

“(It was) quiet and (I was) watching my mom, Marian Robinson, sit at the base of my portrait and look up at it with such a level of awe,” she said when the portraits were temporarily moved to Chicago.

“And for me, watching her see me in that way meant the world to me,” Michelle Obama said.

Sports / Breaking News VIDEO: Sex Noises Shockingly Interrupt Euro 2024 Draw As Embarrass by brave212: 8:44pm On Dec 02, 2023
VIDEO: Sex noises shockingly interrupt Euro 2024 draw as embarrassed presenters left red-faced during European Championship ceremony in Germany.

The draw for the 2024 European Championships was bizarrely interrupted multiple times by sex noises during the ceremony in Germany.

The event kicked off with national sides across the continent eager to find out their opponents for the showcase event in Germany. The ceremony included a star-studded cast of presenters, including Wesley Sneijder, Steve McManaman and David Silva. However, the former Manchester City midfielder and the rest of the presenting team was left red-faced when audible sex noises could be heard playing from inside the arena.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1731009493553549663

Silva could be seen holding back the laughs as he claimed "there is some noise here", but was resolute enough to continue alongside his fellow UEFA delegates. The ex-Spain international was halfway through drawing Switzerland in Group A, alongside hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary before the sex noises began. Smirking Denmark legend Brain Laudrup was also interrupted by the sounds as he pulled Italy out of the hat, who were placed in Group B.

Saturday's gaffe isn't the first time such embarrassing noises have emerged during a televised football event. Gary Lineker's hosting of the FA Cup clash between Liverpool and Wolves was interrupted earlier this year, with YouTube prankster Daniel 'Jarvo69' Jarvis assuming responsibility that time around.

While Scotland were dealt a tough opening game against hosts Germany, England benefited from a favourable draw. Gareth Southgate's side come up against Euro 2020 semi-final opponents Denmark, as well as Slovenia and Serbia.

Celebrities / Breaking News : Suspect Arrested In 1996 Tupac Shakur Shooting Death by brave212: 8:11pm On Sep 29, 2023
CNN

An arrest has been made in Las Vegas in connection with the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, a law enforcement source tells CNN.

The source, who has knowledge of the investigation, confirms the man arrested Friday morning is Duane Keith Davis, aka “Keffe D,” whose wife’s Henderson home was searched in July as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting.

Las Vegas Metro Police Department officials are planning to hold a news conference later Friday, the source said.

Shakur was shot and killed while leaving a boxing match on the Las Vegas Strip. His untimely death – the rapper was just 25 – has been the subject of conspiracy theories and a decades-long investigation.

Davis has long placed himself at the scene of the crime, saying he was in the front seat of the white Cadillac that came up beside Shakur’s car when shots rang out from the back seat, killing the musician. The rapper was shot four times and died six days later.

When police searched Davis’ wife’s home in July, they seized a copy of the memoir Davis authored detailing street gang life and the murder of Shakur. In the memoir, Davis describes himself as one of only two living witnesses to Shakur’s shooting, the other being Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, former CEO of Death Row Records, who is now serving time in prison for manslaughter in an unrelated case.

“Going to keep it for the code of the streets,” Davis said when asked who of the four men in the car was responsible for pulling the trigger. “It just came from the backseat, bro.”

Tupac’s stepbrother, Mopreme Shakur, who is also a rapper, said news of Davis’ arrest is “bittersweet.”

“We have been through decades of pain. They have known about this guy, who been running his mouth, for years,” he said.

“So why now?” he said. “For us, this is not over. We want to know why, and if there were any accomplices.”

Zoleka passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25th, surrounded by friends and family,” the statement, shared on her official Instagram account, said.

She documented her battle with cancer on the account. On August 23, she wrote: “What do I tell my children? How do I tell them that this time around, I may not get to live my life as a survivor? How do I tell them everything will be okay when it’s not? I’m dying … I don’t want to die.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation also issued a statement Tuesday, saying it “extends its heartfelt condolences to the Mandela family on the passing of Zoleka Mandela, tragically last night.”

Religion / Mozambique Pastor Dies Attempting 40-day Jesus Fast by brave212: 8:54pm On Feb 16, 2023
Mozambique pastor dies attempting 40-day Jesus fast

A pastor in Mozambique has died after trying to fast for 40 days, emulating what Christ is said to have done in the Bible.

Francisco Barajah, founder of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church, died at a hospital in the city of Beira, where he was evacuated in critical condition.

After 25 days without food or water, he had lost weight to the point where he could not stand up. He was aged 39.

He had been taken to hospital at the insistence of relatives and followers.

Mr Barajah was diagnosed with acute anaemia and failure of his digestive organs.

He was rehydrated with serums and an attempt was made to introduce liquid foods, but it was too late and and he died on Wednesday.

The pastor was also a French teacher in the town of Messica in the central province of Manica, bordering Zimbabwe.

Members of the Santa Trindade Church said it was common for the pastor and his followers to fast, but not for that long.

His brother Marques Manuel Barajah said the pastor had fasted, but he challenged the medical diagnosis about his death. "The truth is that my brother suffered from low blood pressure," he said.

It is not the first report of such a deadly attempt to imitate Christ's 40-day fast in the desert as described in the Gospel of Matthew.

In 2015, a Zimbabwean man died after 30 days, local media said. In 2006, a British coroner found that a woman died half-way through a similar fast in London.

Politics / Again, Fr. Alia Wins Benue APC Governorship Primary by brave212: 1:30pm On Feb 03, 2023
Governorship flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth-Iormem Alia

Fr. Hyacinth Alia has again emerged the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Benue State in a rerun election concluded late Thursday in Makurdi, the state capital.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, had last week, ordered APC to conduct fresh primary elections for selection of its gubernatorial candidate for 2023 general election.

The court, had based on evidence submitted in a suit filed by a gubernatorial aspirant, Professor Terhemba Shija, agreed that the primary election held on the 27th of May by APC during which Fr Alia was declared as the governorship candidate of the party was not validly conducted.

However, Fr Alia polled 410,682 votes to again emerge the governorship candidate of Benue APC at the rerun primary conducted on Thursday, according to results announced by Chairman, Rescheduled Election Committee, Sen. Basheer Lado.

Lado said the first runner-up was Dr Matthias Byuan who polled 14,592 votes while the second runner-up was Sen. Barnabas Gemade who scored 5,125 votes.

Prof. Terhemba Shija scored 2,217 votes, while Mr Michael Aondoakaa and Mr Iorwase Hembe scored 3,815 and 638 votes, respectively.

“The winner of the exercise is Alia. Having scored the highest vote cast. I declare him as the winner,’’ Lado said.

Alia’s candidature was later ratified by members of the party through a voice vote.

The party chairman, Mr Austin Agada had put a question to members seeking to know whether the result was a true reflection of what transpired in the field and they answered in the affirmative.

“Having ratified Alia’s candidature, I therefore, declare that Alia is the governorship candidate of the party in Benue,’’ Agada said.

Phones / Instagram Rolls Out ‘Quiet Mode’ For When Users Want To Focus by brave212: 7:55pm On Jan 19, 2023
Instagram on Thursday announced a new feature called “quiet mode,” which aims to help users focus and set boundaries with friends and followers.

When the option is enabled, all notifications will be paused and the profile’s activity status will change to ‘In quiet mode.” If someone sends a direct message during this time, Instagram will automatically send an auto-reply notifying the sender that “quiet mode” is activated.

While the feature applies to all users, Instagram appears to be focusing on teens. Instagram is pitching it as a tool to help with studying and prompting teens to turn on the feature “when they spend a specific amount of time on Instagram late at night.”

The tool will roll out to users in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and plans to add it to more countries in the future.

The tool is the latest example of instagram offering users more ways to manage their usage, after years of scrutiny over how much time people – and especially teens – spend on various social media applications, and the harms it can pose to their mental health.

“These updates are part of our ongoing work to ensure people have experiences that work for them, and that they have more control over the time they spend online and the types of content they see,” the company said in a blog post.

As part of that effort, the platform is also introducing features to give users more control over what shows up in their Explore feed. For example, it’s now possible to mark content with a “Not Interested” label to prevent similar content from showing up in the future. Instagram is also introducing an option to block words or lists of words, emojis or hashtags, such as #fitness or #recipes, from being recommended in the Explore feed.

Instagram is updating its parental supervision tools, too. When a teen updates a setting, parents can receive a notification so they can talk to their teen about the change. Parents will also be able to view accounts their teen has blocked.

In a series of congressional hearings in 2021, executives from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Snapchat faced tough questions from lawmakers over how their platforms can lead younger users to harmful content, damage mental health and body image (particularly among teenage girls), and lacked sufficient parental controls and safeguards to protect teens.

The social media companies vowed to make changes, and Instagram in particular has made many. It has since introduced an educational hub for parents with resources, tips and articles from experts on user safety, and rolled out a tool that allows guardians to see how much time their kids spend on Instagram and set time limits.

Another Instagram feature encouraged users to take a break from the app, such as suggesting they take a deep breath, write something down, check a to-do list or listen to a song, after a predetermined amount of time. The company has also said it’s taking a “stricter approach” to the content it recommends to teens and actively nudges them toward different topics, such as architecture and travel destinations, if they’ve been dwelling on any type of content for too long.

Foreign Affairs / Ukrainian President Zelensky Says He Is Not Sure Putin Is Still Alive by brave212: 6:32pm On Jan 19, 2023
Ukrainian President Zelensky says he is not sure Putin is still alive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he does not understand with whom in Russia to negotiate and is even not sure that Russian President Vladimir Putin is still alive. "Today I don't quite understand whom to talk to and what to talk about. I'm not sure that the Russian President, who sometimes appears on the chroma key, that this is him. I don't quite understand if he is alive, whether he makes decisions or who makes decisions there. What's this circle of faces? I have no such information," Zelensky said, speaking via video conference at the Ukrainian Breakfast at the World Economic Forum in Davos .

"I don't quite understand how you can promise European leaders one thing and start a full-scale invasion of the country the next day. I just don't quite understand who we're dealing with. When we say "peace talks", I don't quite understand with whom. It seems to me that Russia should first find "someone" and then offer "something," Zelensky continued.

Answering a question about negotiations with Russia, he noted that during his presidency, the Ukrainian side did everything to liberate its lands through diplomacy, and constantly offered negotiations. "But someone did not want to, then someone did not have time, someone did not believe, and someone put forward conditions," the President of Ukraine said

The Kremlin, commenting on the words of Vladimir Zelensky, said that Russia and Putin are a big problem for Ukraine and its leader. "Purely psychologically, Zelensky would prefer that neither Russia nor Putin existed. But the sooner he realizes that both Russia and Putin are there and will be, the sooner everything anti-Russian is abandoned, the better for a country like Ukraine," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that the sooner Ukraine "shows readiness to take into account Russia's demands," the faster the Ukrainian people will recover "after the tragedy that the Kyiv regime has created."

Moscow has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready for peace talks with Ukraine, but there is no dialogue allegedly because of Kyiv's position. At the same time, the Kremlin said that negotiations can take place only on Russia’s terms. According to Moscow, the return of the annexed Ukrainian territories cannot be a topic for negotiations. Ukraine, in turn, stated that it was not ready for ultimatums and negotiations with the current president of Russia.

Crime / 17-year-old Arrested For Allegedly Impregnating 10 Ladies In Rivers by brave212: 9:49am On Jan 14, 2023
THE Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old boy for allegedly impregnating 10 ladies.

The suspect, Noble Uzuchi, was nabbed with his accomplice, Chigozie Ogbonna, 29.

According to the authorities, the two suspects and two other ladies, Favour Bright and Peace Alikoi, were allegedly running a baby factory.

Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Grace Iringe-Koko, said the arrests were carried out following a tip-off.

In a statement, Iringe-Koko stated that the four suspects operated in the Obio/Akpor and Ikwerre local government areas of the state before their arrest.

She added that the 10 pregnant ladies had been rescued by the force operatives after the raid on and arrest of the suspects.

“On Saturday, January 7, 2023, around 4.45 pm, while acting on credible intelligence available to the Rivers State Police Command, C4I Intelligence Unit operatives raided two houses at Igwuruta and Omagwa communities respectively, where victims of child trafficking were being kept.

The victims rescued in the operation are 10, most of them pregnant,” she said.

She claimed that investigations found that when a victim delivered her baby, the syndicate leader kept the child and paid N500,000 while some of the babies previously delivered in the houses had been sold.

All the victims confessed that they were lured into the illicit sales of children because of the need to meet some financial challenges.

A white Honda Pilot SUV was recovered from the syndicate’s leader,” she added.

BOLA BADMUS, DAYO AYEYEMI and SUBAIR MOHAMMED speak with some people with major stakes as the Lagos State government moves on with a project expected to lift the state but which will affect hundreds of families in the state.

AS excitement builds over the proposed construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, it has been disclosed that about 48 estates will be affected.

Special Adviser on Work and Infrastructure to the state governor, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, made the disclosure while assuring affected property owners that adequate compensation, in line with international best practices, had been made to cater to the imminent loss of their property to the construction work.

Speaking through the Project Director, Mr Tokunbo Ajanaku, Adeyoye, an engineer, said the state government had carried along the 48 estates, traditional rulers and others that would be affected by the bridge.

On the issue of compensation, Ajanaku said: “This project passes through Lagos and Ogun states, so it is a Lagos State initiative for Lagos State and Ogun State driven by Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and that means all of the corridors within Lagos and those within Ogun State, there is a harmonious and integrated approach to settlement and that is what we will do and each party will be properly compensated and resettled where necessary. The approach is going to be holistic. I think the issue of compensation is not the case. It is actually a composite plan to make everybody happy.”

But property owners and other stakeholders are still worried about adequate compensation and resettlement, though the two state governments had created a platform known as Panel Review Meeting on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to discuss the project and its impacts.

Property owners and stakeholders who expressed concern include Abayomi Adeleye, Olarewanju Smith, Abiola Badmus, Biodun Sunday and A. Oriloye

“We will like to know from the governments of Lagos and Ogun states the standard for compensation, the exact amount to be paid to each of us, among other issues, as anything other than this will amount to forced eviction,” Oriloye stated.

Speaking to Saturday Tribune, he said dwellers of Ijede and other areas would be captured in the compensation arrangement, asking the people, in Yoruba language, not to panic.

He said: “This has been our tradition. You will recall that recently, when we were doing the Red-Line channel, before the construction took off in 2021, we had compensated everybody involved. We compensated all the landlords and for the first time in the history of Nigeria, we compensated the tenants for the discomfort that they had suffered because of the construction as they were asked to leave their homes suddenly and abruptly. They had to leave because of that project. This is not going to be an exception.

“We have done the environmental assessment. We have taken register of all the people who are going to be affected. The experts have said that about 800 buildings are going to be affected. You can be assured that everything will be done to make people who are going to be affected comfortable.

“So, there is no need for anybody to panic. The project is at its initial stage. We haven’t even done the groundbreaking but we are very sure that the project is going to be executed. We cannot execute the project without compensating the people whose homes are going to be taken away because of the project.

“There is no issue about that at all. They should relax. And like Asiwaju would always say, e f’okan bale.”

How govt should handle relocation, compensation –CDC chairmen

The proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge, according to the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Mr Lukman Shonibare, is a blessing to residents in the axis who have been clamouring for another exit road.

Shonibare urged residents and the affected property owners to persevere, saying the project would bring about development.

He said: “Residents of Ikorodu have been clamouring for another road exiting Ikorodu. The proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge is going to be a blessing to the entire people of Ikorodu. Some people must make sacrifice for something that will bring blessing to the larger population.

“The Lagos State has done it in such a way that the number of people that would be affected would be minimal and compensation will be given to the affected property owners.”

His Agbado Oke-Odo counterpart, Mr Ernest Kasunmu, said the project, should not be allowed to make residents and property owners homeless.

He said: “We are not directly affected but it is about development. With the Fourth Mainland Bridge, the Lagos State government is trying to further develop and widen the economy of the state but in doing this, residents must not be made to suffer. They must not be subjected to hardship and homelessness in the name of development.

“We know how difficult it is to secure a room and a parlour as a tenant. It is considered good fortune if anyone could build just a room and a parlour.

“So, as long as the proposed bridge is a welcome development, I would like to see all affected property and business owners and tenants to be compensated. They must not be made to bear the brunt of development and expansion in the state.”

Project crippling businesses –APC chieftain

A business owner and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikorodu, Mr Oluwatosin Onamade, lamented the adverse effects of the project on businesses in the axis.

Onamade, who is the Managing Director of Western Funeral Homes Limited, disclosed that businesses had been crippled by the planned demolition of marked buildings.

He said: “The construction has reduced incomes. Some axes have been blocked and those buildings that have been marked for demolition, potential clients have moved away to other areas and this has partially collapsed businesses.

Speaking with Saturday Tribune, Managing Director, MOA Planners Limited, Mr Moses Ogunleye, said there was a public hearing about the project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA).

According to him, the Land Use Act stipulates a process for compensating affected residents or property owners.

Besides, he said the Lagos State government has a process for paying compensation and resettlement.

“The ESIA should have addressed some resettlement action. There is a component of it they also refer to a Resettlement Action Plan.

“Those that need to resettle, I believe the recommendation would have been made and they need to be resettled,” he said.

Ogunleye, a former president of the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria (ATOPCON), implored the state government to work hard to prevent social backlashes.

He said:”Technical issues can be taken care of – mostly engineering, if you need to divert water course or reclaim a land and so on. But the real concern is the social reaction. When people are adequately compensated, there won’t be much problem; they will see the project as their own. That will bring the positive aspect of the project to the communities.

“Government needs to watch out on social issue, particularly compensation. People are going to lose their jobs, farmlands and properties. You have to compensate them and they need to get the compensation at the right time.”

We are concerned about significant negative consequences –FG

The Federal Government has however said that it is taking note of the significant negative consequences of the “laudable” project.”

Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdulahi, through Mr Gomwalk Celestine, said: “Despite the laudable benefits associated with the proposed project and considering the biophysical and socio-economic nature of the proposed corridor, the project was envisaged to have significant negative social, economic, health and environmental consequences, including resettlement issues for numerous Project Affected Persons (PAPs).

“It is the responsibility of the Federal Government, in collaboration with other tiers of government and relevant regulatory authorities, to ensure that these negative impacts are adequately identified and effectively mitigated while the attendant positive impacts are realised for project and environmental sustainability.

“As policymakers, we must ensure adequate provision of an enabling environment for investments in critical infrastructure such as this project for Nigeria to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Nigeria’s commitment to Net Zero by 2060.”

The 38-kilometer bridge is expected to gulp about $2.5 billion (about N1,123,825,000,000).

Foreign Affairs / Nine Million People Told To Evacuate As Super Typhoon Nanmadol Hits by brave212: 5:15pm On Sep 19, 2022
Japan storm: Nine million people told to evacuate as super typhoon Nanmadol hits.

million people have been told to evacuate their homes as Japan is battered by one of the worst typhoons the country has ever seen.

The super typhoon Nanmadol has killed two people and injured almost 90.

It hit Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, on Sunday morning, and is set to reach Honshu, the largest island, in the coming days.

Tens of thousands of people spent Sunday night in emergency shelters, and almost 350,000 homes are without power.

Transport and business has been disrupted, and the country is braced for extensive flooding and landslides.

Nanmadol has brought gusts of up to 234km/h (145mph), and some areas were forecast 400mm (16 inches) of rain in 24 hours.

Bullet train services, ferries, and hundreds of flights have been cancelled. Many shops and other businesses have closed, and sandbags have been put in place to protect some properties.

The typhoon made landfall near the city of Kagoshima, on the southern tip of Japan's most southerly island, Kyushu, on Sunday morning.

A river in Kyushu has burst its banks.

State broadcaster NHK said one man was killed when his car was submerged in flooding, and another died after being buried in a landslide. One more person remains missing, and 87 have been injured.

Local video footage shows roofs ripped off buildings and billboards toppled over.

The storm is forecast to turn east and pass over Japan's main island of Honshu before moving out to sea by Wednesday. The capital, Tokyo, has experienced heavy rain, with the Tozai underground line suspended because of flooding.

A level-five alert, the highest on Japan's disaster warning scale, has been issued for more than 500,000 people in the Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Oita, Kumamoto and Yamaguchi areas.

A total of around nine million people have been ordered to evacuate parts of the Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku regions after a level four alert.

Hurricanes to expand into more populated regions
Forecasters predict a very active hurricane season
Hurricanes explained
Nanmadol has been categorised as a super typhoon by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), a term applied to storms with sustained wind speeds of 240km/h (150mph) or more. It is the equivalent of a category four or five hurricane.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has delayed a visit to New York, where he is due to give speech at the UN General Assembly, until Tuesday, to monitor the impact of the storm.

Scientists have predicted a very active hurricane season this year, influenced by a natural phenomenon known as La Niña.

Warmer sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean as a result of climate change may also have an impact.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has said intense tropical cyclones will likely increase on a global scale

Sports / FA Cup: Goalkeeper Sent Off For Urinating In Hedge During Qualifying Match by brave212: 3:38pm On Sep 05, 2022
A goalkeeper was sent off in an FA Cup tie for "urinating in a hedge" during a first qualifying round match.

Blackfield & Langley FC's Connor Maseko was caught short in the 76th minute of his side's 0-0 draw against Shepton Mallet FC when the ball went out for a goal-kick

The referee decided to show Maseko a red card for the incident, with Blackfield & Langley co-manager Conor McCarthy saying "sometimes when you have to go, you have to go."

"The ball went out for a goal kick," McCarthy told the BBC. "He needed to go to the toilet so he went up against a hedge and their players started shouting saying 'what's he doing?' to the ref. The ref went up to him and decided to send him off.

"He protected himself. He was inside the hedge. Sometimes when you have to go, you have to go.

"I was gobsmacked. I didn't expect that [the red card].

"We're all pretty shocked by the decision."

The tie will be replayed, and Blackfield & Langley's official account tweeted to say they hoped they would get "plenty of toilet breaks en route" while Shepton Mallett also posted to say they were looking for a match sponsor, urging "plumbers or portaloo companies" to take advantage.

"See you Tuesday evening (hopefully get plenty of toilet breaks en route)," Blackfield & Langley said

Foreign Affairs / Top General Overseeing US Nuclear Arsenal Is "Satisfied" With US Defensive Postu by brave212: 10:29pm On Mar 01, 2022
The top general who oversees the US nuclear weapons and nuclear capabilities said Tuesday that he is “satisfied” with the US defensive posture right now, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and President Putin’s recent announcement that he has put his country’s deterrence forces on high alert.

US Strategic Command Admiral Charles Richard made the comments during a House Armed Services committee hearing.

Richard participated in the hearing virtually from US Strategic Command headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. He told lawmakers he stayed in Nebraska to make sure he can “assess and be satisfied in terms of our defensive posture.”

Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Sasha Baker said the Defense Department is “comfortable with our strategic defensive posture,” echoing Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s previous statements.
Foreign Affairs / European Parliament Recommends Giving Ukraine EU Candidate Status by brave212: 10:22pm On Mar 01, 2022
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Tuesday calling on the European Union institutions "to work towards granting" Ukraine the status of EU candidate country, it said in a statement.

The resolution, which also demanded the EU to impose "tougher sanctions" on Russia, was voted in favor by 637 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). It condemned "in the strongest possible terms Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and demands that the Kremlin end all military activities in the country."

The members also stressed that the EU's financial sanctions against Russia should go further, stating that "all Russian banks should be blocked from the European financial system and Russia should be banned from the SWIFT system."

"While welcoming the swift adoption of EU sanctions, MEPs want to see broader restrictive measures aimed at strategically weakening the Russian economy and industrial base. In particular, imports of the most important Russian export goods, such as oil and gas should be restricted, they say. New EU investment in Russia and new Russian investment in the EU should be banned," the press release said.

The lawmakers pushed for the extension of a range of sanctions including the SWIFT ban on Belarus in return for its "direct support of the Russian invasion of Ukraine."

They also called on EU countries to send Ukraine "defensive weapons more swiftly, in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows for individual and collective self-defense."

Finally, all sanctions aimed at individuals responsible for "high-level corruption" in Russia and Belarus including oligarchs and officials should be adopted "swiftly," it said.

EU countries operating residence by investment schemes or golden visas as they are commonly known should "review all beneficiaries of such residence status and revoke those attributed to Russian high-net-worth individuals and their families, in particular those linked to sanctioned individuals and companies."
Foreign Affairs / US In Contact With Zelensky Through Secure Satellite Phone Given To Him By The U by brave212: 10:05pm On Mar 01, 2022
The US remains in regular contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky through a secure satellite phone that the US gave the Ukrainian government last month before the invasion occurred, according to a US official familiar with the matter.

Previously most secure communications between the Ukrainians and US officials went through the embassy in Kyiv, two US officials said. When the US was preparing to evacuate the embassy, and as fears mounted about the Russian invasion which is now occurring, the US sent the phone that is now being used to their Ukrainian counterparts.

The secure phone allows Zelensky to remain in contact with the US while he’s mobile, the official added. Zelensky has made clear he intends to remain in the country and he is currently moving around to multiple locations in Kyiv that are protected with a significant security presence, CNN has reported.

Previously, Zelensky had filmed video messages of himself speaking in front of monuments or other recognizable buildings but his speech to the European Parliament Tuesday was given via video feed from a nondescript room decorated only with a Ukrainian flag.

The US provided a similar satellite phone to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the official said. The phones requires electricity but can operate off of a generator or energy from a car if needed.

Initially it took a few days for the Ukrainians to get the satellite phones up and working because the instructions on how to use it were in English, not in Ukrainian.

Zelensky and US President Joe Biden spoke as recently as Tuesday, according to the Ukrainian President and White House.

The National Security Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amid growing pressure from European nations and the International Olympic Committee, FIFA and UEFA confirmed Monday that Russia would have no involvement in the upcoming World Cup playoffs -- Russia were due to play Poland in a semifinal ahead of a potential final against Sweden or the Czech Republic in March -- and that the Russia women's team would be removed from the European Championships due to be staged in England in July.

Spartak Moscow have also been removed from the Europa League, meaning round of 16 opponent RB Leipzig will be handed a bye to the quarterfinals of the competition.

A vessel with a storage capacity of two million barrels of oil has exploded off the coast of southern Nigeria’s Delta state, raising fears of an environmental disaster and concerns about the fate of its crew.

Shebah Exploration & Production Company Ltd (SEPCOL) said on Thursday that flames had engulfed the Trinity Spirit following the blast a day earlier. The floating production, storage and offloading vessel can process up to 22,000 barrels of oil a day, according to the operator’s website.

The vessel was located at the Ukpokiti Terminal, along the coast of the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

Joe Sunday, an assistant boat driver, said he was in one of the two speedboats out at sea on Wednesday morning to pick some crew who were due to take time off from work but could not reach the vessel because it was consumed by fire.

“We drove round to see if we could see people but we did not see anybody and the fire was still blazing,” Sunday told Reuters news agency at a port in Warri.

Tiby Tea, chairman of Maritime Union for Nigerian Ports Authority in Warri, confirmed that two boats sent out to the vessel could not find anyone.

“At this time there are no reported fatalities but we can confirm that there were 10 crewmen on board the vessel prior to the incident,” SEPCOL Chief Executive Ikemefuna Okafor said in a statement.

An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the accident, he said, adding that the company was working to “contain the situation”.

Oil spill fears
Nigeria’s regulatory agency for upstream operations, NUPRC, said the explosion had led to a “major fire” and that it had “commenced investigations into the incident”.

“The commission will take necessary measures to ensure that all safety and environmental measures … to safeguard lives and the environment are put in place,” spokesman Paul Osu said.

Idris Musa, director of Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), told the AFP news agency they were also on site responding to the incident.

Environmental activists were, however, worried about the potential impact.

“There will definitely be a spill,” said Mike Karikpo of the local NGO, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria.

“This is a facility that handles over 20,000 barrels per day … the oil will reach the surrounding communities.”

Since the 1970s, the oil-rich Niger Delta region has accounted for an overwhelming majority of Nigeria’s earnings.

But the region continues to suffer the multiplier effect of decades of environmental degradation, which has eroded livelihoods and deprived residents of basic essentials such as access to clean drinking water. The area’s mangroves and swamps have become uninhabitable for many species and the average human life expectancy is also 10 years lower in the Delta than elsewhere in Nigeria.

Although Nigeria is Africa’s largest crude producer, operating costs are high due to frequent accidents and widespread insecurity, although most accidents take place on land.

There have also been attacks on oil installations in the past, piercing pipelines to take crude oil and increasing kidnappings to obtain a ransom.

Nigerian pirates are also active across the wider and resource-rich Gulf of Guinea region, disrupting shipping in a vast area stretching from Senegal to Angola.
Foreign Affairs / Breaking News, Ethiopian Defeated A Very Well-armed Italian Army by brave212: 3:38am On Mar 04, 2020
The memorial of the Battle of Adwa in 1935
124 years ago, Ethiopian men and women defeated the Italian army in the Battle of Adwa

On the first day of March 124 years ago, traditional warriors, farmers and pastoralists as well as women defeated a well-armed Italian army in the northern town of Adwa in Ethiopia. The outcome of this battle ensured Ethiopia’s independence, making it the only African country never to be colonized. Adwa turned Ethiopia into a symbol of freedom for black people globally. It also led to a change of government in Italy.

The town of Adwa is located in Northern Tigray, closer to the southern border of Eritrea. Yeha, the capital of Ethiopia’s ancient empire from 980-400 BC, and the monastery of Aba Garima, which was founded in the sixth century AD, are located near the town.

The battle between Ethiopia and Italy took place in the mountainous terrain of the area.

Adwa still stands as witness to what ordinary Africans can do when they come together as farmers, pastoralists, women and rural people, workers and artists. They are able to score a decisive victory against global colonialist forces. Since the beginning of slavery and colonialism in the 16th century, similar battles had occurred around the world. The outcome of every war was the same. Europeans ended up ruling the native peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Ethiopia stood as the antithesis of the colonial worldview. Regarded as the origin of humankind, it was, according to Harvard professor Ephraim Isaac, “about 10,000 years ago, one single nation or community of a single linguistic group.”

The people spoke an Afrasian language, which is the origin of almost all languages currently spoken in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.

Ethiopians developed the Geez or Ethiopic writing system. From the fourth century, an indigenous Christianity, Orthodox Tewahido, developed through the synthesis of belief in the Ark of the Covenant, the gospel and ancient traditional practices.

The Kebra Nagast, the national epic that elaborates this belief, provided the basis for the emergence of a Solomonic dynasty that incorporates diverse lands and cultures into one country. Muslim immigrants were welcomed and protected by the Christian king in the seventh century.

In the 19th century, the three successive kings, namely Emperor Tewodros of Gondar, Yohannes of Tigrai and Menelik of Shoa, sought to centralize power.

The road to Adwa
A decade before the Battle of Adwa, European powers had decided the fate of Ethiopia. At the Berlin Conference of 1884-5, 14 European countries divided Africa among themselves. Before the conference, only about 10% of Africa was controlled by Europeans; the remaining 90% was ruled by indigenous and traditional rulers. Italy had a colonial possession over Assab port since 1882. At the Berlin Conference, European colonial powers agreed that Italy could take over Ethiopia as its future colony.

Italy expanded its presence in the Red Sea, an area that had become important since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. With British support, Italy took control of the port city of Massawa in 1885. From Massawa, Italy moved slowly inland, leading to a number of clashes with locals, which culminated in the battle of Adwa. Italy suffered heavy defeats but this didn’t deter them.

WIKIMEDIA COMMONS
A 1930 painting depicting the Battle of Adwa
Italy’s expansion across Ethiopia was facilitated by the devastation caused by rinderpest—an infectious viral disease—that killed up to 90% of the country’s livestock. Famine and disease wiped out a third of the population between 1888 and 1892. This period is regarded as Kifu Ken, evil days.

Italy took advantage of the devastation. It sought to divide and conquer Ras Mangasha of Tigray and Nigus Menelik of Shoa. The Italians eventually signed the Treaty of Wuchale with Menelik in May 1889. The treaty was written in Amharic and Italian. The treaty would later be the trigger for the battle of Adwa. Menelik was to discover that the language in the two versions of the treaty differed. The Italian version effectively made Ethiopia Italy’s protectorate, in contrast to the Amharic version.

Preparing for war
As the tragic devastation of the Kifu Ken eased, Menelik began preparing for war against the Italians. On Feb. 27 1893, he renounced the Treaty of Wuchale. He then ordered the creation of food depots at major towns along the way to Adwa for the upkeep of his army. The Italians fortified their positions in Tigray, attacking Mangasha at Coatit on Jan. 13 1895.

On Sept. 17 1895, Menelik declared a total mobilization of war against Italy. He called on all Ethiopians to defend their country, family and religion. He ordered every capable person to fight and those incapable to pray for Ethiopia’s victory.

Ethiopians from every tribe, culture and community answered Menelik’s call. Regional leaders from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds responded unanimously creating an army of 100,000. They had inferior weapons but a strong cause.

The battle
The first showdown occurred at Amba Alagi on Dec. 7 1895, where a relatively smaller Italian army was wiped out. The second encounter was at Mekelle, where the Italians were stationed behind a strong fort. The Ethiopians surrounded the Italians for two weeks and, upon Empress Tayitu’s advice, cut off the fort’s water supply.

The Italian commander agreed to surrender if they would be allowed to leave with their firearms. Menelik agreed that they could leave the garrison unharmed.

But the Italians remained in their strongholds, fortifying their position at Adigrat and Sauria. Menelik was not in a hurry to attack these forts. After two weeks of inactivity, General Baratieri decided to advance for a surprise attack. It was Mar. 1 1896, or, according to the Ethiopian calendar, Yekatit 23, 1888, the day of Saint George. The priests carried the Tabot, a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, a religious icon that symbolises the sanctity of Ethiopia, to the battlefield. The 20,000 Italian and Italian-trained native troops who advanced in three columns fought bravely with their cannons and machine guns before facing a decisive defeat. Causalities were severe on both sides.

One of the key leaders of the Ethiopian forces was Etege Tayitu Bitul, wife of Emperor Menelik. A fearless strategist and brilliant administrator, she led 6,000 cavalry to the war front, and employed traditional music and war chants that motivated the fighting spirit of the warriors.

The impact
The Adwa victory led to a change of government in Italy. Due to public protest and failure of his colonial policy, prime minister Francesco Crispi resigned.

Negotiations between the two countries resulted in the Addis Ababa Treaty. One of its key components was the unconditional acceptance of Ethiopian independence and sovereignty.

News of an African victory spread throughout the world.

Adwa turned Ethiopia into the symbol of redemption and freedom for black people. Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Du Bois, Bob Marley, George Padmore and others drew inspiration from the African victory. The first Afro-Brazilian newspaper was named O Menelick, publishing pride in black identity and African connection with prominent women writers from 1915-1916.

Adwa connected black people with Africa’s ancient glory and future hope, as Marcus Garvey wrote:

Look to Africa for the crowing of a black king. He shall be the redeemer.

The green, yellow and red Ethiopian flag was adopted by several African countries after colonial liberation and a universal national anthem was created for black people.

Sports / Breaking News. Ighalo Sign For Manchester United Till The End Of The Season by brave212: 7:25am On Feb 01, 2020
http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/51335993

Manchester United have signed former Watford striker Odion Ighalo from Shanghai Shenhua on loan until the end of the season.

The deal to bring the 30-year-old Nigeria international to Old Trafford contains no option to buy.

Ighalo, who is still in China but is expected to fly to the UK in the next few days, scored 39 goals in 99 matches for Watford between 2014 and 2017.

"Odion is an experienced player," said United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"He will come in and give us an option of a different type of centre-forward for the short spell he's staying with us.

"A great lad and very professional, he will make the most of his time here."

Ighalo moved to the Chinese Super League in 2017, first with Changchun Yatai. After two seasons he moved to Shanghai Shenhua and has scored 10 times in 19 games.

A last-gasp scramble & 'beating Mourinho' - how Man Utd landed lifelong fan Ighalo
His form for his country has been eye-catching, finishing as top scorer in African Cup of Nations qualifying with seven goals, before scoring five at the tournament during the summer.

It is understood there was interest from other Premier League clubs but Ighalo wanted to play for United.

He is United's first senior loan signing since Radamel Falcao's arrival from Monaco in 2014.

Ighalo (left) was picture wearing a Manchester United shirt during his childhood
Ighalo (left) was pictured wearing a Manchester United shirt during his childhood
Earlier on Friday, United ended interest in Bournemouth's Josh King but did sign Southend United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop for an undisclosed fee.

United accept Ighalo does not fit the club's policy of trying to sign long-term targets, such as Bruno Fernandes, who moved to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon on Thursday.

However, this move has been done to cover the short-term injury to Marcus Rashford and they could not go the rest of the season without bringing in a replacement.

England international Rashford, 22, is out with a stress fracture in his back sustained after coming on as a substitute during the FA Cup third-round replay win against Wolves on 15 January.

'He turned down Barcelona last year'
BBC World Service's John Bennett

Back in 2015 after Watford's promotion from the Championship, Ighalo was asked where he was most looking forward to playing in his first Premier League season.

No hesitation: "Old Trafford. It'll be a dream come true to play against Manchester United, the team I supported in my youth". Little did he know what would happen almost five years later.

Odion does a huge amount of charity work for people in Nigeria and he's also still a very talented striker.

It's a left-field move by United and I'm also sure that you'll have read and heard all the negatives so to balance things out let me give you some positives: Ighalo is a natural number nine and a natural goalscorer with pace and power.

Barcelona tried to sign him just 12 months ago because they wanted that type of player. He turned them down.

He is a very strong character, too. The Nigerian got a lot of criticism back home after missing chances when the Super Eagles were knocked out by Argentina at the last World Cup (including abuse aimed at his family) but he came back stronger to finish top scorer not only in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying but also at the tournament itself, ahead of the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez.

Ighalo's proven in the Premier League and will be able to hit the ground running, fitness permitting.

He'll also be a very popular team-mate who will give his all to be a success at United. Nobody will work harder.

It's almost like a homecoming, too, as Ighalo's family has been based in Manchester.

It's a fairytale move for the United fan from Lagos. Now let's see if, not for the first time in his career, he can prove the doubters wrong.

'He's a boyhood fan'
Nigeria football writer Oluwashina Okeleji

Fifteen years after football fans witnessed the collapse of John Mikel Obi's transfer to Manchester United, Nigerians will finally get a chance to see one their own become a Red Devil. At 30, Odion Ighalo becomes the first Super Eagle to move to Old Trafford.

Born in a poverty-stricken Lagos ghetto, Ajegunle, Ighalo is a boyhood fan of United. He watched on TV as his striking favourites Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole helped them to the treble in 1999.

Fans in his West African nation closely follow the Premier League, which recruit some of the continent's best players.

Manchester United has a huge fan base in Nigeria and many believe Ighalo will be a success at Old Trafford having retired from international football on a high in 2019.

Ighalo finished as top scorer at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations before calling time on his international career at the end of the tournament in Egypt.

He produced seven goals to finish top scorer in the qualifying and his five goals and one assist helped Nigeria finish third last summer.

Many expected him to fade away in Asia after leaving Watford for Chinese Super League (CSL) club Changchun Yatai. But his pace, instinctive finish and ability to find space has helped him to relative success in China

Ighalo finished as the 2018 CSL's second-top scorer with 21 goals and despite an injury-hit season he scored 10 goals in 17 appearances for new club Shanghai Shenhua in 2019, helping them to FA Cup success.

At least 27 people have died after a passenger plane crashed into houses in Goma city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials say.

Residents on the ground, including nine family members, were among the victims.

The small aircraft went down in the Mapendo neighbourhood after "missing" its take-off from the city's airport on Sunday morning, North Kivu regional governor Nzanzu Kasivita said.

The officials say 17 passengers and two crew members were on board the plane.
