Chinese restaurant apologizes after video of diners urinating into hotpot broth goes viral. Beijing Reuters — Chinese hotpot giant Haidilao said it would compensate over 4,000 diners who had visited one of its outlets in Shanghai after two diners urinated into their hotpot broth. A video showing two men urinating into the broth of their hotpot while dining in a private room at a Haidilao restaurant started circulating online late last month. Haidilao said on Wednesday the incident occurred on February 24 but that it only became aware of the issue four days later and could not initially determine the time and location. It showed the case revealed a lack of training procedures, which led to staff’s failure to detect the situation promptly. The company confirmed the location in downtown Shanghai on March 6. “We fully understand that the distress caused to our customers by this incident cannot be fully compensated for by any means,” the company said in the statement. “We are willing to do our utmost to take responsibility. The company did not say how much it would be spending in compensation. Haidilao reported the case to the police in Jianyang, Sichuan, where it is headquartered, and other locations. The police have since detained two men, both 17 years old, according to a statement issued by Shanghai police. Haidilao filed a civil lawsuit application against them on Monday, the company’s statement added.

Vladimir Putin wants Russians to have sex during work breaks to boost population. Russia's leadership has advised people to have sex during work breaks to boost the nation's dwindling birth rate amid ongoing population decline exacerbated by the Ukraine war. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly advised Russians to have sex at work, during their lunch and coffee breaks, in an effort to combat the country's declining birth rate. According to a report in Metro, Putin's directive comes as Russia's current fertility rate stands at approximately 1.5 children per woman, well below the 2.1 needed for population stability. The country's population has also taken a dip due to the ongoing war with Ukraine, which has led to an exodus of over a million, mostly young, Russians. Russian Health Minister Dr Yevgeny Shestopalov emphasised that work should not be an obstacle to procreation, urging Russians to take advantage of lunch and coffee breaks for family expansion. "Being very busy at work is not a valid reason, but a lame excuse. You can engage in procreation during breaks, because life flies by too quickly," Metro quoted Shestopalov as saying. In response to a question about the feasibility of such suggestions for those working long hours, Shestopalov reiterated the importance of utilising break times. "Make babies during break times," he said. The Kremlin has suggested several other measures to boost Russia's declining birth rate. In Moscow, women between the ages of 18 and 40 are being encouraged to participate in free fertility screenings designed to evaluate their reproductive health and potential. In the Chelyabinsk region of Russia, authorities have introduced a financial incentive aimed at boosting the birth rate. Women under the age of 24 are offered a payment of 1.02 lakh ruble (Rs 9.40 lakh) upon the birth of their first child. Access to abortion is being increasingly restricted across Russia, with public figures and religious leaders advocating that a woman's primary responsibility is to bear and raise children. Additionally, fees for divorce have also been increased. Russia has recorded its lowest birth rate in 25 years for the first half of 2024, according to official data released earlier this month. The figures also revealed that in June, births dropped below one lakh for the first time, marking a significant decline. Between January and June 2024, a total of 5,99,600 children were born in Russia, which is 16,000 fewer than during the same period in 2023. "This is catastrophic for the future of the nation," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in July, according to news agency AFP. "It [the birth rate] is now at a terribly low level — 1.4 [births per woman]. This is comparable to European countries, Japan, and so on".

CNN — Marian Robinson, the mother of former first lady Michelle Obama, has died, according to a statement from the Obama and Robinson families. She was 86. As a sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend to so many, she was beloved beyond words by countless others whose lives were improved by her presence,” the statement from Barack and Michelle Obama, Craig and Kelly Robinson, and their children said in part. “She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” the statement said. Michelle Obama posted on social media, “My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today.” “There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example,” Barack Obama wrote on X. Robinson lived with the Obamas during their time at the White House and was often spotted at events with the first family, including handing out goodie bags to trick-or-treaters on Halloween. We needed her. The girls needed her,” the family’s statement said of her move to Washington. “And she ended up being our rock through it all.” A native of Chicago – where she returned after the Obamas left the White House – Robinson was married to Fraser Robinson, and the pair had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser Robinson died in 1991 after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis. Marian Robinson was heavily involved in her kids’ education, according to the statement. The family recalled Robinson as having taught “her children to read at an early age, sitting together as they sounded out words on a page, giving them the strength and confidence to walk to school.” They also highlighted her presence in a historic moment. On Election Night in 2008, when the news broke that Barack would soon shoulder the weight of the world, she was there, holding his hand,” the statement read. David Axelrod, former Obama senior adviser, remembered Robinson as “just a great lady.” She was a South Sider through and through,” Axelrod, a CNN senior political commentator, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room” on Friday, adding that during her time at the White House, “she did not take to the whole celebrity lifestyle.” Instead, Axelrod said, “she would often slip out of the White House on her own and visit with friends. … She really wasn’t looking for attention.” Years after the unveiling of the Obamas’ portraits at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in 2018, Michelle Obama recalled how impactful her mother’s reaction had been when she took her to the museum after hours. “(It was) quiet and (I was) watching my mom, Marian Robinson, sit at the base of my portrait and look up at it with such a level of awe,” she said when the portraits were temporarily moved to Chicago. “And for me, watching her see me in that way meant the world to me,” Michelle Obama said. This story has been updated with additional reporting. VIDEO: Sex noises shockingly interrupt Euro 2024 draw as embarrassed presenters left red-faced during European Championship ceremony in Germany. The draw for the 2024 European Championships was bizarrely interrupted multiple times by sex noises during the ceremony in Germany. The event kicked off with national sides across the continent eager to find out their opponents for the showcase event in Germany. The ceremony included a star-studded cast of presenters, including Wesley Sneijder, Steve McManaman and David Silva. However, the former Manchester City midfielder and the rest of the presenting team was left red-faced when audible sex noises could be heard playing from inside the arena.
Silva could be seen holding back the laughs as he claimed "there is some noise here", but was resolute enough to continue alongside his fellow UEFA delegates. The ex-Spain international was halfway through drawing Switzerland in Group A, alongside hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary before the sex noises began. Smirking Denmark legend Brain Laudrup was also interrupted by the sounds as he pulled Italy out of the hat, who were placed in Group B. Saturday's gaffe isn't the first time such embarrassing noises have emerged during a televised football event. Gary Lineker's hosting of the FA Cup clash between Liverpool and Wolves was interrupted earlier this year, with YouTube prankster Daniel 'Jarvo69' Jarvis assuming responsibility that time around. While Scotland were dealt a tough opening game against hosts Germany, England benefited from a favourable draw. Gareth Southgate's side come up against Euro 2020 semi-final opponents Denmark, as well as Slovenia and Serbia. |

CNN — An arrest has been made in Las Vegas in connection with the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, a law enforcement source tells CNN. The source, who has knowledge of the investigation, confirms the man arrested Friday morning is Duane Keith Davis, aka “Keffe D,” whose wife’s Henderson home was searched in July as part of the ongoing investigation into the shooting. Las Vegas Metro Police Department officials are planning to hold a news conference later Friday, the source said. Shakur was shot and killed while leaving a boxing match on the Las Vegas Strip. His untimely death – the rapper was just 25 – has been the subject of conspiracy theories and a decades-long investigation. Davis has long placed himself at the scene of the crime, saying he was in the front seat of the white Cadillac that came up beside Shakur’s car when shots rang out from the back seat, killing the musician. The rapper was shot four times and died six days later. When police searched Davis’ wife’s home in July, they seized a copy of the memoir Davis authored detailing street gang life and the murder of Shakur. In the memoir, Davis describes himself as one of only two living witnesses to Shakur’s shooting, the other being Marion ‘Suge’ Knight, former CEO of Death Row Records, who is now serving time in prison for manslaughter in an unrelated case. “Going to keep it for the code of the streets,” Davis said when asked who of the four men in the car was responsible for pulling the trigger. “It just came from the backseat, bro.” Tupac’s stepbrother, Mopreme Shakur, who is also a rapper, said news of Davis’ arrest is “bittersweet.” “We have been through decades of pain. They have known about this guy, who been running his mouth, for years,” he said. “So why now?” he said. “For us, this is not over. We want to know why, and if there were any accomplices.” This is a developing story and will be updated

Mozambique pastor dies attempting 40-day Jesus fast A pastor in Mozambique has died after trying to fast for 40 days, emulating what Christ is said to have done in the Bible. Francisco Barajah, founder of the Santa Trindade Evangelical Church, died at a hospital in the city of Beira, where he was evacuated in critical condition. After 25 days without food or water, he had lost weight to the point where he could not stand up. He was aged 39. He had been taken to hospital at the insistence of relatives and followers. Mr Barajah was diagnosed with acute anaemia and failure of his digestive organs. He was rehydrated with serums and an attempt was made to introduce liquid foods, but it was too late and and he died on Wednesday. Pastor Barajah IMAGE SOURCE,BARAJAH FAMILY The pastor was also a French teacher in the town of Messica in the central province of Manica, bordering Zimbabwe. Members of the Santa Trindade Church said it was common for the pastor and his followers to fast, but not for that long. His brother Marques Manuel Barajah said the pastor had fasted, but he challenged the medical diagnosis about his death. "The truth is that my brother suffered from low blood pressure," he said. It is not the first report of such a deadly attempt to imitate Christ's 40-day fast in the desert as described in the Gospel of Matthew. In 2015, a Zimbabwean man died after 30 days, local media said. In 2006, a British coroner found that a woman died half-way through a similar fast in London.

Governorship flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth-Iormem Alia Fr. Hyacinth Alia has again emerged the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) for Benue State in a rerun election concluded late Thursday in Makurdi, the state capital. The Court of Appeal sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, had last week, ordered APC to conduct fresh primary elections for selection of its gubernatorial candidate for 2023 general election. The court, had based on evidence submitted in a suit filed by a gubernatorial aspirant, Professor Terhemba Shija, agreed that the primary election held on the 27th of May by APC during which Fr Alia was declared as the governorship candidate of the party was not validly conducted. However, Fr Alia polled 410,682 votes to again emerge the governorship candidate of Benue APC at the rerun primary conducted on Thursday, according to results announced by Chairman, Rescheduled Election Committee, Sen. Basheer Lado. Lado said the first runner-up was Dr Matthias Byuan who polled 14,592 votes while the second runner-up was Sen. Barnabas Gemade who scored 5,125 votes. Prof. Terhemba Shija scored 2,217 votes, while Mr Michael Aondoakaa and Mr Iorwase Hembe scored 3,815 and 638 votes, respectively. “The winner of the exercise is Alia. Having scored the highest vote cast. I declare him as the winner,’’ Lado said. Alia’s candidature was later ratified by members of the party through a voice vote. The party chairman, Mr Austin Agada had put a question to members seeking to know whether the result was a true reflection of what transpired in the field and they answered in the affirmative. “Having ratified Alia’s candidature, I therefore, declare that Alia is the governorship candidate of the party in Benue,’’ Agada said. Ukrainian President Zelensky says he is not sure Putin is still alive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he does not understand with whom in Russia to negotiate and is even not sure that Russian President Vladimir Putin is still alive. "Today I don't quite understand whom to talk to and what to talk about. I'm not sure that the Russian President, who sometimes appears on the chroma key, that this is him. I don't quite understand if he is alive, whether he makes decisions or who makes decisions there. What's this circle of faces? I have no such information," Zelensky said, speaking via video conference at the Ukrainian Breakfast at the World Economic Forum in Davos . "I don't quite understand how you can promise European leaders one thing and start a full-scale invasion of the country the next day. I just don't quite understand who we're dealing with. When we say "peace talks", I don't quite understand with whom. It seems to me that Russia should first find "someone" and then offer "something," Zelensky continued. Answering a question about negotiations with Russia, he noted that during his presidency, the Ukrainian side did everything to liberate its lands through diplomacy, and constantly offered negotiations. "But someone did not want to, then someone did not have time, someone did not believe, and someone put forward conditions," the President of Ukraine said The Kremlin, commenting on the words of Vladimir Zelensky, said that Russia and Putin are a big problem for Ukraine and its leader. "Purely psychologically, Zelensky would prefer that neither Russia nor Putin existed. But the sooner he realizes that both Russia and Putin are there and will be, the sooner everything anti-Russian is abandoned, the better for a country like Ukraine," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that the sooner Ukraine "shows readiness to take into account Russia's demands," the faster the Ukrainian people will recover "after the tragedy that the Kyiv regime has created." Moscow has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready for peace talks with Ukraine, but there is no dialogue allegedly because of Kyiv's position. At the same time, the Kremlin said that negotiations can take place only on Russia’s terms. According to Moscow, the return of the annexed Ukrainian territories cannot be a topic for negotiations. Ukraine, in turn, stated that it was not ready for ultimatums and negotiations with the current president of Russia.

Fourth Mainland Bridge: 48 Estates To Go, Property Owners Fear Forced Eviction https://tribuneonlineng.com/fourth-mainland-bridge-48-estates-to-go-property-owners-fear-forced-eviction Lagos Fourth Mainland Bridge: 48 Estates To Go, Property Owners Fear Forced Eviction •E f’okan bale —Lagos govt •Community leaders advise govt on compensation, relocation WEEKEND LAGOS By BOLA BADMUS, DAYO AYEYEMI And SUBAIR MOHAMMED On Jan 7, 2023 Share BOLA BADMUS, DAYO AYEYEMI and SUBAIR MOHAMMED speak with some people with major stakes as the Lagos State government moves on with a project expected to lift the state but which will affect hundreds of families in the state. AS excitement builds over the proposed construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, it has been disclosed that about 48 estates will be affected. The Patagonia Desert- A 4k Aerial Film of Argentina 00:05 / 03:03 Copy video url Play / Pause Mute / Unmute Report a problem Language Share Vidverto Player Special Adviser on Work and Infrastructure to the state governor, Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, made the disclosure while assuring affected property owners that adequate compensation, in line with international best practices, had been made to cater to the imminent loss of their property to the construction work. Speaking through the Project Director, Mr Tokunbo Ajanaku, Adeyoye, an engineer, said the state government had carried along the 48 estates, traditional rulers and others that would be affected by the bridge. On the issue of compensation, Ajanaku said: “This project passes through Lagos and Ogun states, so it is a Lagos State initiative for Lagos State and Ogun State driven by Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu and that means all of the corridors within Lagos and those within Ogun State, there is a harmonious and integrated approach to settlement and that is what we will do and each party will be properly compensated and resettled where necessary. The approach is going to be holistic. I think the issue of compensation is not the case. It is actually a composite plan to make everybody happy.” But property owners and other stakeholders are still worried about adequate compensation and resettlement, though the two state governments had created a platform known as Panel Review Meeting on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to discuss the project and its impacts. Property owners and stakeholders who expressed concern include Abayomi Adeleye, Olarewanju Smith, Abiola Badmus, Biodun Sunday and A. Oriloye “We will like to know from the governments of Lagos and Ogun states the standard for compensation, the exact amount to be paid to each of us, among other issues, as anything other than this will amount to forced eviction,” Oriloye stated. Don’t panic, even tenants will be compensated –Commissioner Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, however gave the assurance that compensation would be adequate. read more Tribune Online 1h NSCDC arrests 5 suspects for vandalising bridges in FCT NSCDC arrests 5 suspects for vandalising- bridges- in- FCT- Share Story About Login Speaking to Saturday Tribune, he said dwellers of Ijede and other areas would be captured in the compensation arrangement, asking the people, in Yoruba language, not to panic. He said: “This has been our tradition. You will recall that recently, when we were doing the Red-Line channel, before the construction took off in 2021, we had compensated everybody involved. We compensated all the landlords and for the first time in the history of Nigeria, we compensated the tenants for the discomfort that they had suffered because of the construction as they were asked to leave their homes suddenly and abruptly. They had to leave because of that project. This is not going to be an exception. “We have done the environmental assessment. We have taken register of all the people who are going to be affected. The experts have said that about 800 buildings are going to be affected. You can be assured that everything will be done to make people who are going to be affected comfortable. “So, there is no need for anybody to panic. The project is at its initial stage. We haven’t even done the groundbreaking but we are very sure that the project is going to be executed. We cannot execute the project without compensating the people whose homes are going to be taken away because of the project. “There is no issue about that at all. They should relax. And like Asiwaju would always say, e f’okan bale.” How govt should handle relocation, compensation –CDC chairmen The proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge, according to the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Mr Lukman Shonibare, is a blessing to residents in the axis who have been clamouring for another exit road. Shonibare urged residents and the affected property owners to persevere, saying the project would bring about development. He said: “Residents of Ikorodu have been clamouring for another road exiting Ikorodu. The proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge is going to be a blessing to the entire people of Ikorodu. Some people must make sacrifice for something that will bring blessing to the larger population. “The Lagos State has done it in such a way that the number of people that would be affected would be minimal and compensation will be given to the affected property owners.” His Agbado Oke-Odo counterpart, Mr Ernest Kasunmu, said the project, should not be allowed to make residents and property owners homeless. He said: “We are not directly affected but it is about development. With the Fourth Mainland Bridge, the Lagos State government is trying to further develop and widen the economy of the state but in doing this, residents must not be made to suffer. They must not be subjected to hardship and homelessness in the name of development. “We know how difficult it is to secure a room and a parlour as a tenant. It is considered good fortune if anyone could build just a room and a parlour. “So, as long as the proposed bridge is a welcome development, I would like to see all affected property and business owners and tenants to be compensated. They must not be made to bear the brunt of development and expansion in the state.” Project crippling businesses –APC chieftain A business owner and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikorodu, Mr Oluwatosin Onamade, lamented the adverse effects of the project on businesses in the axis. Onamade, who is the Managing Director of Western Funeral Homes Limited, disclosed that businesses had been crippled by the planned demolition of marked buildings. He said: “The construction has reduced incomes. Some axes have been blocked and those buildings that have been marked for demolition, potential clients have moved away to other areas and this has partially collapsed businesses. Speaking with Saturday Tribune, Managing Director, MOA Planners Limited, Mr Moses Ogunleye, said there was a public hearing about the project’s Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). According to him, the Land Use Act stipulates a process for compensating affected residents or property owners. Besides, he said the Lagos State government has a process for paying compensation and resettlement. There is a component of it they also refer to a Resettlement Action Plan. “Those that need to resettle, I believe the recommendation would have been made and they need to be resettled,” he said. Ogunleye, a former president of the Association of Town Planning Consultants of Nigeria (ATOPCON), implored the state government to work hard to prevent social backlashes. He said:”Technical issues can be taken care of – mostly engineering, if you need to divert water course or reclaim a land and so on. But the real concern is the social reaction. When people are adequately compensated, there won’t be much problem; they will see the project as their own. That will bring the positive aspect of the project to the communities. “Government needs to watch out on social issue, particularly compensation. People are going to lose their jobs, farmlands and properties. You have to compensate them and they need to get the compensation at the right time.” We are concerned about significant negative consequences –FG The Federal Government has however said that it is taking note of the significant negative consequences of the “laudable” project.” Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdulahi, through Mr Gomwalk Celestine, said: “Despite the laudable benefits associated with the proposed project and considering the biophysical and socio-economic nature of the proposed corridor, the project was envisaged to have significant negative social, economic, health and environmental consequences, including resettlement issues for numerous Project Affected Persons (PAPs). “It is the responsibility of the Federal Government, in collaboration with other tiers of government and relevant regulatory authorities, to ensure that these negative impacts are adequately identified and effectively mitigated while the attendant positive impacts are realised for project and environmental sustainability. “As policymakers, we must ensure adequate provision of an enabling environment for investments in critical infrastructure such as this project for Nigeria to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Nigeria’s commitment to Net Zero by 2060.” The 38-kilometer bridge is expected to gulp about $2.5 billion (about N1,123,825,000,000). The storm is forecast to turn east and pass over Japan's main island of Honshu before moving out to sea by Wednesday. The capital, Tokyo, has experienced heavy rain, with the Tozai underground line suspended because of flooding. A level-five alert, the highest on Japan's disaster warning scale, has been issued for more than 500,000 people in the Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Oita, Kumamoto and Yamaguchi areas. A total of around nine million people have been ordered to evacuate parts of the Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku regions after a level four alert. Hurricanes to expand into more populated regions Forecasters predict a very active hurricane season Hurricanes explained Nanmadol has been categorised as a super typhoon by the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC), a term applied to storms with sustained wind speeds of 240km/h (150mph) or more. It is the equivalent of a category four or five hurricane. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has delayed a visit to New York, where he is due to give speech at the UN General Assembly, until Tuesday, to monitor the impact of the storm. Scientists have predicted a very active hurricane season this year, influenced by a natural phenomenon known as La Niña. Warmer sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Caribbean as a result of climate change may also have an impact. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has said intense tropical cyclones will likely increase on a global scale

A goalkeeper was sent off in an FA Cup tie for "urinating in a hedge" during a first qualifying round match. Blackfield & Langley FC's Connor Maseko was caught short in the 76th minute of his side's 0-0 draw against Shepton Mallet FC when the ball went out for a goal-kick The referee decided to show Maseko a red card for the incident, with Blackfield & Langley co-manager Conor McCarthy saying "sometimes when you have to go, you have to go." "The ball went out for a goal kick," McCarthy told the BBC. "He needed to go to the toilet so he went up against a hedge and their players started shouting saying 'what's he doing?' to the ref. The ref went up to him and decided to send him off. "He protected himself. He was inside the hedge. Sometimes when you have to go, you have to go. "I was gobsmacked. I didn't expect that [the red card]. "We're all pretty shocked by the decision." The tie will be replayed, and Blackfield & Langley's official account tweeted to say they hoped they would get "plenty of toilet breaks en route" while Shepton Mallett also posted to say they were looking for a match sponsor, urging "plumbers or portaloo companies" to take advantage. "See you Tuesday evening (hopefully get plenty of toilet breaks en route)," Blackfield & Langley said

The top general who oversees the US nuclear weapons and nuclear capabilities said Tuesday that he is “satisfied” with the US defensive posture right now, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine and President Putin’s recent announcement that he has put his country’s deterrence forces on high alert. US Strategic Command Admiral Charles Richard made the comments during a House Armed Services committee hearing. Richard participated in the hearing virtually from US Strategic Command headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. He told lawmakers he stayed in Nebraska to make sure he can “assess and be satisfied in terms of our defensive posture.” Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Sasha Baker said the Defense Department is “comfortable with our strategic defensive posture,” echoing Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s previous statements. |
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Tuesday calling on the European Union institutions "to work towards granting" Ukraine the status of EU candidate country, it said in a statement. The resolution, which also demanded the EU to impose "tougher sanctions" on Russia, was voted in favor by 637 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). It condemned "in the strongest possible terms Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and demands that the Kremlin end all military activities in the country." The members also stressed that the EU's financial sanctions against Russia should go further, stating that "all Russian banks should be blocked from the European financial system and Russia should be banned from the SWIFT system." "While welcoming the swift adoption of EU sanctions, MEPs want to see broader restrictive measures aimed at strategically weakening the Russian economy and industrial base. In particular, imports of the most important Russian export goods, such as oil and gas should be restricted, they say. New EU investment in Russia and new Russian investment in the EU should be banned," the press release said. The lawmakers pushed for the extension of a range of sanctions including the SWIFT ban on Belarus in return for its "direct support of the Russian invasion of Ukraine." They also called on EU countries to send Ukraine "defensive weapons more swiftly, in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows for individual and collective self-defense." Finally, all sanctions aimed at individuals responsible for "high-level corruption" in Russia and Belarus including oligarchs and officials should be adopted "swiftly," it said. EU countries operating residence by investment schemes or golden visas as they are commonly known should "review all beneficiaries of such residence status and revoke those attributed to Russian high-net-worth individuals and their families, in particular those linked to sanctioned individuals and companies." |
The US remains in regular contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky through a secure satellite phone that the US gave the Ukrainian government last month before the invasion occurred, according to a US official familiar with the matter. Previously most secure communications between the Ukrainians and US officials went through the embassy in Kyiv, two US officials said. When the US was preparing to evacuate the embassy, and as fears mounted about the Russian invasion which is now occurring, the US sent the phone that is now being used to their Ukrainian counterparts. The secure phone allows Zelensky to remain in contact with the US while he’s mobile, the official added. Zelensky has made clear he intends to remain in the country and he is currently moving around to multiple locations in Kyiv that are protected with a significant security presence, CNN has reported. Previously, Zelensky had filmed video messages of himself speaking in front of monuments or other recognizable buildings but his speech to the European Parliament Tuesday was given via video feed from a nondescript room decorated only with a Ukrainian flag. The US provided a similar satellite phone to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the official said. The phones requires electricity but can operate off of a generator or energy from a car if needed. Initially it took a few days for the Ukrainians to get the satellite phones up and working because the instructions on how to use it were in English, not in Ukrainian. Zelensky and US President Joe Biden spoke as recently as Tuesday, according to the Ukrainian President and White House. The National Security Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
