Executive chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Tunde Fowler, has said that the agency would start charging five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on domestic and international online transactions from January 2020. Igbere TV reports that Mr Fowler said this on Monday at the African Tax Administration Forum Technical Workshop in Abuja. The Federal Government had said the move is to raise revenue to fund the 2019 N8.9 trillion budget. Fowler said that several countries had identified Nigeria as a good market and many of them were into online businesses, adding that there was the need to tap the potentials to generate more revenue for the country. He, however, said that that the date of commencement of the VAT on online transactions would be subject to government’s approval. “We have thrown it out to Nigerians. Effective from January 2020, we will ask banks to charge VAT on online transactions, both domestic and international,” Fowler said. “VAT remains the cash cow in most African countries, with an average VAT-to-total tax revenue rate of 31 per cent. This is higher than the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s average of 20 per cent. “This statistics, therefore, is a validation of the need for us to streamline the administration of this tax with the full knowledge of its potential contributions to national budgets.” Nigerians have expressed displeasure at the proposed policy which they say would adversely affect tech startups and businesses which have contributed significantly to job creation. http://igberetvnews.com/936013/just-in-firs-to-begin-5-vat-charge-on-online-transactions-january-2020-fowler/ Lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, has returned to work after President Muhammadu Buhari rejected her request for early retirement. Oyo-Ita returned to her desk on Thursday after participating in the swearing-in ceremony of ministers on Wednesday. The HoS had sent in her letter on Sunday following pressure from her family. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating her for alleged involvement in a N3 billion contract scam. Oyo-Ita was quizzed for four days beginning from August 8 and kept in EFCC custody. She was interrogated over abuse of duty tour allowance, money laundering and stealing of government funds, Igbere TV reports. EFCC said the N3 billion linked personally to Oyo-Ita allegedly came in through proxy companies. The money was discovered during a probe of a former minister under who she served as permanent secretary. Oyo-Ita has denied culpability in the alleged scam. The embattled Oyo-Ita was absent on Monday and Tuesday at the presidential retreat for ministers-designate, federal permanent secretaries and top government functionaries held at the state house conference centre in Abuja. http://igberetvnews.com/922360/oyo-ita-returns-to-work-after-rejection-of-retirement/

President Muhammadu Buhari has insisted that no law in Nigeria requires him to produce his certificates to prove his eligibility to vie for the presidency. The president made the assertion on Wednesday, August 21 while adopting his final brief of argument in opposition to the petition which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, filed to nullify his re-election The president, through his lawyer, Wole Olanipekun (SAN), argued that he was only required to be educated, under the 1999 Constitution, Igbere TV reports. Hence, he urged that the petition challenging his election and his educational qualifications be dismissed by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja. According to the president, the petition lacked merit and substance. He said: “The law is well settled and the case-law is crystalized on the point that the 2nd respondent (Buhari) cannot go beyond provisions of sections 131 and 131( of the 1999 Constitution.“The case-law is replete with decisions of this court on the subject. We cannot amend the constitution. “We need to make it very clear at this point that the constitution and laws of the land do not expect any certificate to be tendered or attached.” Buhari, further relying on a recent judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal in a certificate scandal case that involved the governorship candidate of the PDP in Osun state, Senator Ademola Adeleke, contended that non-attachment of his certificates was not a valid ground to challenge his participation in the February 23 presidential election which he won. In the same vein, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), through their lawyers, Prince Lateef Fagbami (SAN) and Yunus Usman (SAN) also asked the Justice Mohammed Garba-led tribunal to dismiss the petition with cost. According to the ruling party, the petition would create an impression that the president lacks basic educational qualifications, Igbere TV reports. Fagbemi said: “Those who set the standard for secondary education where called. They came and gave the verdict that what the 2nd respondent has was equivalent to Secondary School Certificate. “The witness said so, and there was no follow-up on that. They did not say that the certificate was fake or forged. “The position is that we take him to be a secondary school leaver.” The petition would be reserved for judgment by the panel, after all the parties have adopted their final addresses. http://igberetvnews.com/918961/no-law-requires-me-to-produce-my-certificate-buhari-to-tribunal/

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has knocked the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for calling for the arrest and prosecution of the attackers of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu. Ekweremadu who was attending a cultural event by the Ndi-igbo Germany community as a speaker/special guest of honour was on Saturday beaten up and egged publicly by members of IPOB. The lawmaker was accused by IPOB members of conspiring with the Federal Government to proscribe the group in the South East and the killing of its followers. German police said no arrest had been made as the people have a right to protest. The authorities said they only were at the venue of the event to restore order, Igbere TV reports. The APC and PDP both condemned the attack and called for the arrest and prosecution of the attackers. However, Mr Kanu, in a tweet on Tuesday, said ‘Fulani apologists’ in the two main parties were still ‘blinded’ to the ‘storm’ that is gathering to envelop them. “The popular revolt against Ekweremadu has been ruled non-criminal by German govt, yet Fulani apologists (both APC & PDP) are still blinded to the gathering storm that will soon envelop them. It’s no longer about #IPOB alone; it’s about the long-suffering masses of Nigeria,” he said. http://igberetvnews.com/915197/nnamdi-kanu-knocks-pdp-apc-for-calling-for-prosecution-of-ekweremadus-attackers/
