If only Nigeria will treat solid Minerals like oil/gas, the country would be far better than it is now. Our leaders intentionally for their selfish gains pretend not to know the racket in the sector. The "agbero" was doing his job! Not like he was trying to extort the driver. The lunatic driver was driving on the wrong lane, risking lives and eventually ran into an 11 year old boy killing him. Just last month, one idiotic father endangered the lives of his children by driving on the wrong lane leading to the death of one of them. People should stop risking lives and drive on the right lane! I totally agree with LASTMA for putting such offenders through compulsory mental evaluation and counselling which they must pay for. Too many crazy people behind the wheels.

Guy, wake up. Sixteen years in teaching is not beans, your years of experience already makes you an authority in your subject areas, you need to retrace your steps and set that standard. From the point of negotiation, if you accept an offer put a clause, the pay is subject to review by you, after one to two months, the children/parents must have seen how good you are and will consider a review of pay or terms. In my last contract with a parent, she declined my request for a raise in pay cos of increase in transport after 6 months with them. I was patient with the parent hoping that she will reconsider my request, she didn't and there was another increase in transport . This time I sent her a text message that I won't be able to continue due to the increase in fuel price hence TP, she got angry and opted for me recommending another teacher cos I suggested that, I didn't reply her. Fast forward to three months after, she called me, I knew she had tried someone who couldn't match up with me, unfortunately for her I was already tired of the teaching hustles. Always make yourself valuable before parents, not just the home lesson parents but those you teach. Some of us were teachers with levels even though we de fine money.

this is funny, did they train you in school? Are you not doing the lesson cos of money? Or you told them the lesson is a way of you giving back to the society? You are not finished if you set a standard for yourself, except you are not good in what you do before you can be at their mercy. I didn't tolerate any parent more than one month in my days of that home lesson hustles, if I leave, their children begin to give them headache and I hardly turn back once I stop coming to your house for lesson, except in few cases where we already had a good relationship before you start misbehaving. I guess you are in a rural area or probably an early years teacher. No Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry teacher stoop low for parents to rubbish in the name of home lesson except he/she isn't sound.

Don't be deceived by their sweet names, 98% of private schools in Nigeria have very very poor welfare package for their teachers/staff. The few that have accommodations for their staff use it as a means of enslaving them, they threaten teachers with sack and make the job very tedious just because they feel you will be stranded once they sack you. If you must teach, don't get trapped in a school that offers you accommodation, cos that will be the beginning of your problem. They will take all your leisure time including nights and weekends that you will become useless to yourself, your social life will also suffer and to japa from the school will be so difficult. Go to a school that will give you small time to map out other ways to survive in this tough economy.
As for the Op who does home lesson, next time, request for upfront payment for your transport, let the money be close to half of your pay, once a parent starts doing anyhow, you end the contract, do check and balance to either pay her/him back or collect your balance and move or you stop going for lessons two contacts after your pay is delayed, they will get the message. If the pay is delayed the next month again, you quit totally. Like you mentioned, those parents can pay hundred of thousands to millions as school fees without delay, but always want to treat home lesson teachers less if you lose guard. It is well with those of you still helping the life of our future leaders.
