Politics › I Have Lost Sympathy For ASUU – Jos Archbishop by Buddydogg(op): 8:18am On Oct 07, 2013 |
Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, on Sunday rued the prolonged strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, saying he had lost sympathy for the lecturers.
Kaigama, who spoke at the 80th Anniversary of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Jos, Plateau State, said that members of ASUU had lost focus on the cause for their battle.
The cleric said that ASUU, by allowing the strike to linger and allowing students to stay at home for four months running, had exhibited utter insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian students and their future.
He said he regretted that the association had failed to yield to pleas from all quarters, including the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, stressing that ASUU had shown that it was fighting for other causes other than the future of education in the country.
Kaigama said, “Initially I was with ASUU, but when they have allowed the students to stay at home for four months now they begin to lose my sympathy. You don’t go on a strike for a long time, especially in a sector like education, which is the bedrock of the development of any society.
“You said you are fighting for the students and have allowed them to stay at home for more than four months, you must be fighting for something else. You have made your point and all I expect is that they should have listened to all the pleadings by Nigerians, including the Catholic Bishops Conference, which has just ended its meeting in Benue State and where we appealed to ASUU, in the interest of Nigerian students, to go back to the classroom”
Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor Abdulfatai Ahmed has joined others who have been begging ASUU to sheathe its sword. Ahmed appealed to the striking university teachers to reconsider their stance and return to the classroom.
Ahmed made the call while speaking with journalists in Abuja on the sidelines of the 2013 World Teachers’ Day Celebration where he received the NUT Award of Excellence alongside his counterparts from Enugu and Yobe states, Sullivan Chime and Ibrahim Geidam respectively.
The governor expressed the confidence that the Federal Government would soon end the protracted industrial action.
“I am sure the Federal Government is looking at the industrial action critically to ensure that all areas of dispute are brought to an understanding that will bring to an end the current dispute,” he said.
The National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Michael Olukoye, while fielding questions from journalists reiterated his advice to the Federal Government to set up a team comprising the President, President of the Senate, Speaker of the House of Representatives and former presidents like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and representatives of the Vice Chancellors to meet with ASUU and find a common ground to resolve the impasse.
Olukoye observed that members of ASUU refused to call off despite the government’s commitment because of lack of confidence in the government.
He said, “Immediately we gave that ultimatum the first person to invite us was the Minister of Labour and the Supervising Minister for Education, we met with them and they told us all that they have been able to do to put the matter behind us.
“We have not been able to meet with ASUU but we advised that if these people said they need about N400bn and you have been able to provide N130bn, well, to all intent and purposes, it is a good beginning.” http://www.punchng.com/news/i-have-lost-sympathy-for-ASUU-jos-archbishop/ |
Politics › New PDP Insists On Tukur’s Resignation by Buddydogg(op): 8:09am On Oct 07, 2013 |
The New Peoples Peoples Democratic Party has called for the resignation of the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, on the grounds that he had been dismissed from the party. The faction of the ruling party, which is being led by a former Acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, said that Tukur had been dismissed from the party since 2006. It said that since then, there was no record to show that the former governor of old Gongola State had been recalled or granted a waiver by the party’s leadership. Tukur has however frowned on the accusation, saying it is one of the pranks of the aggrieved group to get him out of office. He said none of those making the allegation was in possession of any document to show that he was actually excommunicated from the party. But the New PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, in Abuja on Sunday, insisted that Tukur and nine other members of the party were expelled from the party 13 years ago for anti-party activities. Because of this, he said Tukur was not fit to lead the party. Eze said, “Tukur was expelled from the PDP in 2006 with nine others following disciplinary action taken against them for anti-party activities. “Since then, he has not officially returned to the party. All the records at our disposal show that Tukur has not followed due process for his readmission into the party. “He neither apply for, nor obtained the requisite waiver by the National Executive Committee of the party before offering himself for election into the office of the National Chairman in 2012. “This makes his membership incurably defective and his emergence as PDP’s National Chairman null and void and of no effect whatsoever since he is the product of a flawed process.” Because of this, he said all actions taken as the chairman of PDP since his “purported election in March 2012, including the illegal, contentious convention of August, 2013, are null and void and of no effect.” Eze urged Tukur to tow the path of honour and throw in the towel, which he described as the best option open to him. Eze suggested that Baraje should be recalled to take over from Tukur, an action he said would enable the former chairman “to organise a proper, unified convention that will usher in a duly elected National Working Committee of the party as early as possible to enable us face the business of positioning PDP as the ruling party come 2015.” But Tukur, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone through his Media Assistant, Mr. Oliver Okpala, said he had paid his due in the party and that there was nothing to show that he was once expelled as a member. He said, “It is a mere allegation. None of those making the allegation has any letter or document to prove their point. Therefore, it is a mere fallacy. “I can tell you that such a thing never happened. It is part of the antics of the aggrieved members to give credence to their rebellion against the party.” Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Mr. John Enoh, on Sunday denied that he had joined the Abubakar Baraje-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party. Enoh is from Cross River State, whose Governor, Mr. Liyel Imoke, belongs to the Old PDP faction led by the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. A newspaper (not The PUNCH) had reported that the lawmaker engaged in discussions with the Baraje faction in a bid to open its Cross River State branch. |

Mintayo: I believe it is those that take part actively in evangelism, missions work, rural evangelism are the ones that can provide the BEST answer to this question! Most of us christains don't want to suffer anything,we don't want to go through any TRIALS,TRIBULATIONs,SUFFERING etc... No wonder we go to churches where the pastor will tell us what we want to hear! Temptation is not suffering for Christ, going to church is not suffering for Christ, fasting and prayers is not suffering for Christ, afterall you fast and pray for yourself not for God. Jesus said...Matthew 5:10-11. 10. Blessed are they which are persecuted for RIGHTEOUSNESS sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11. Blessed are you when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for MY(JESUS)sake. can you prof it you suffer for christ! |
