TravelA Guide To Lekki Arts And Crafts Market by Bukayobk(op): 8:52pm On Jan 28, 2019
Lekki Arts and Craft Market
The Lekki Arts and craft market, also known as Oba Elegushi market or Jakande market is the number one go-to market for some of the most creative, original art and handmade crafts in Lagos

And the fact that everything is “really really” affordable is a huge added bonus. Art lover in Lagos and you don’t know about Lekki Arts and Craft Market? Weird flex but okay. Let me tell you how my “wakajugbe” led me to this treasure trove.

It was a hot sunny afternoon in December as harmattan decided to go AWOL on us this year; global warming isn’t even a joke in Nigeria. I hopped out of the house with my cousin to drag our feet across the streets of Lagos and discover the undiscovered and the market was the first location I pushed for.

Now, the market is located On Oba Elegushi Street, just before the fifth roundabout, off Lekki-Epe Expressway. It’s a 10 minutes’ drive from Lekki Phase 1.

I must say, the ease of getting there isn’t so great. The road is terrible and will probably be a lot worse in the raining season as it has the potential to be waterlogged (shallow drainage system).

Looking past the bad road leading there, the market looks more like a shopping complex, and because of the vertical architectural design, you might not immediately notice it as an art market until you’re actually inside, maybe a signage would make it a lot easier.

Arriving at the market, the compound has a fair packing space, but be prepared to pay N200 ($0.54) for parking if you are driving. Some guys would tell you right before you pack and you will be compelled to pay when you’re about leaving.

Seye (my cousin) giving them one “For the Gram”
After we got out of the car, I drew out my water bottle (man must remain hydrated) and prepared to unleash my bargaining skills. I must mention, cash is king in this market, though a few number of traders allow for bank transfer. The market, because of its structure is easy to navigate through without having to back track again repeatedly. It is really well organized.

Starting off at an Ankara stall, on display were Ankara back packs, female Ankara bags, Ankara purses, and Ankara fabric themselves. They looked really nice and come at a good price but remember you’ve got to have strong bargaining skills. I remember starting of the negotiation for the Ankara backpack at N5,000 ($13.72) but finalized for N2,000 ($5.49) that leaves us at 40% bargaining threshold; but you know the saying “No one buys the first jean they try on”.

If you give an impression of rich person, you will be exploited, but rather I spoke “pidgin English” every time I had to negotiate to ease off tension, and if I observe you’re Yoruba, I spoke the Yoruba dialect to enhance familiarity for a better price.

Painting at the market
After series of Ankara stalls for price comparison came the craft works ranging from wooden sculptures to metallic works. Each art stall had its own story and specialization, some majored on bigger wooden sculptures, metallic works, brass, Yoruba works, and many more. These works ranged from N5000 ($13.72) up to as high as N300,000 ($821.25) depending on the work. I got a wood carving of a guitar integrated into a saxophone, it left me speechless the moment I saw it, then I knew I had to get it.

Moving on was to explore the bead works, paintings and leather stalls. These guys had for sale amazing cowrie beads, bracelets, straw hats, actual coral, leather bags, wallets, and many more (the list is endless). I got a leather wallet for N1,000 ($2.74) after negotiating from N2,500 (same 40% bargaining threshold). In between all of these hassles was finding time to have a good sweet orange for refreshment – “I cannot come and die they say, Lol”.

BusinessHow To Improve Your Customer Service by Bukayobk(op): 8:45pm On Mar 03, 2018
Uyo is littered with food places, restaurants and more restaurants. There are so many places to grab a plate of fufu and afang soup or vegetable rice and dry fish but so little customer service. I have too often been a victim of this poor customer service but one experience shook me hard and awake.

I wasn't feeling too well and I needed to take my meds which I couldn't do without moulding it into my eba. I headed to a local restaurant in school to get a plate of eba and egusi soup. At the food counter, I greeted the food seller rather weakly and asked to be attended to. She went about her business, attending to other male customers, addressing each one as "Sir" while ignoring me. Then, I grew impatient and got pissed off and demanded to be attended to. I was shocked or even something more when she said that how do I expect her to attend to me if I didn't greet her.

I was infuriated because I greeted her earlier on and got no response. Also, I don't think that greeting her or not should stop her from attending to me and giving good customer service for food I was paying for. Finally, being female and a student shouldn't be a reason to be disregarded or anything.

Uyo is a city that has potentials, a city I am passionate about. It's sad to know that this city has little or no customer service. Here's how to improve your relationship with your customers and improve your customer service.

Be Responsive To Your Customers

Everyone wants fast service, nobody is patient enough. I wasn't. Your customers want fast service. Immediately a customer walks through your door, focus on them, find out what they want and help out with anything. Even if business is conducted virtually, pay attention to customers, reply emails promptly, and even if the full answer cant be delivered immediately, always email back the same day. Be patient with them, make customers feel like you care enough, more than just the money they are paying for your services.

Accommodate Your Customers

Sometimes, a client will show up late to a call or sometimes a customer wont have all the relevant information service-team members need to provide assistance. While its okay and pretty easy to get annoyed, its important to learn how to accommodate customer needs, just like you accommodate a toddler throwing tantrums for ice-cream. Note that every customer or client determines the growth or fall of your business, they represent you and by word of mouth they either say good or bad about your business to other potential customers. Therefore, every customer is a potential brand ambassador, meaning every interaction can be a selling point or a barrier to attracting more business.

Treat Your Staff The Way You Treat Your Customers

The way you relate with your staff is the same way they will relate with the customers. Behaviour breeds behaviour and a positive happy staff will lead to positive happy customers too. Hence, to help change their mindset, treat your staff with respect, value and show concern and they will treat your customers the same way. This will help you improve your customer service.

Say Thank You

When I go to buy something, I say thank you afterwards and when I am being told thank you after buying something or requesting a service, it leaves a lasting impression on me to come back. Most times, brands and businesses feel like they deserve to be thanked for providing the services and products they offer to the customers. Rather, it takes nothing to say a "Thank you" to a customer who sacrifices money, time and energy to patronize your brand. Thank you has always been the magic word. Use it well.

BusinessCustomer Is Still King - The Rights Of The Consumer In Nigeria by Bukayobk(op): 8:31pm On Mar 03, 2018
Sadly, customers are no longer recognized as king in Nigeria. "This is a reflection of the many years of poor service delivery they have endured in a country where fraud, deception and unwholesome business practices in the marketplace have been robbing them of their hard-earned income and for which they are unable to get any satisfactory redress."

Most businesses pay little or no attention to customer service and therefore would rather spend as little as possible on improving their customer service. The consumers have been dealt with every now and then, and consumer rights overlooked, as these service providers feel entitled to the services they offer.

Our electricity companies force consumers to pay monthly bills for services never enjoyed. Consumer's meters are no longer read yet bills are allocated and still, they are non-responsive to the customers when there's a disruption in distribution. Also, communication providers are ineffective to consumers dissatisfactions during network glitches.

Often, I imagine that we walk into a bank or an establishment and we get to wait hours on end before being attended to or having to endure being talked to rudely by the employees, being unable to express ourselves, just so we can get the service or products we deserve.

Service delivery in the public sector is at an embarrassing low. This is despite the introduction by the Head of Service some years ago, of SERVICOM, a public sector service pact with Nigerians. To access a service as simple as seeing a doctor in a public hospital, one has to contend with the abysmally poor infrastructure and the lackadaisical conduct of the staff.

Well, poor service delivery can change, consumer protection is linked to the idea of consumer rights, and to the formation of consumer organizations, which help consumers make better choices in the marketplace and get help with consumer complaints. There's consumer protection in Nigeria also, a group of specific bodies set up to help consumers deal with issues where companies have either provided poor service or have sold substandard goods to the consumer. This organization is the Consumer Protection Council – CPC.

Most consumers are ignorant of the Consumer protection act in Nigeria. The right of the consumer to be protected and not ignored. The consumer protection act is beneficial to the consumer and very functional in a variety of ways.

Nairaland General8 Basic Rights Of The Consumer by Bukayobk(op): 8:19pm On Mar 03, 2018
The rights of the consumers and its recognition is essential to any brand, business or society. 15 March is World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD), an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. It marks the date in 1962 President John F Kennedy first outlined the definition of Consumer Rights. - Consumers International.

A movement called consumerism began to emerge in the 1950s, in response to the thought that customers have the right to be treated fairly and well by brands and businesses. The American Presidency Project shared John F. Kennedy’s special message to the Congress on protecting consumer rights. The Consumers Rights Act further asserts that every customer deserves a fair and honest treatment and protection by government regulated bodies.

As a Nigerian, you have consumer rights which you should be aware of and knowledgeable about. These consumer rights are fully backed by law as provided for in the Consumer Protection Council Act, under Chapter C25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. The act provides for the establishment of the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and empowers it to protect these rights for every Nigerian – no matter your social background.

1. The Right to Satisfaction of Basic Needs

Every consumer has access to basic goods and services necessary for survival, such as food, water, energy, clothing, shelter, health-care, education and sanitation. Goods and services must meet the standard of quality promised such that there is value for money in the purchase.

2. The Right to Safety

The consumers have the right to expect protection from hazardous products, production processes and services or faulty goods bought in the marketplace, which if used properly to serve its purpose, is hazardous to your health or life. This seemed more realistic when the Consumer Product Safety Act established the Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, in 1972. This federal agency has the authority to set performance standards, require companies to test their products and include warning labels on them, and compel product recalls.

3. The Right to Information

Every customer has the right to be adequately informed about the product or service he is buying, based on the quality, purity, potency, manufacture date, method of use and standard. Brands are not allowed to provide misleading information through advertising, labelling and packaging so the customers can make informed products or service choices.

4. The Right to Choose

This right ensures that the customers have access and availability to a variety of quality products and services in a conducive, healthy and competitive marketplace. Government practices to promote this right include time limits on patents and regulations against unfair pricing practices.

5. The Right to Redress

A customer has the right to voice out any complaints and be heard. They also deserve compensation for misrepresentation, shoddy goods and unsatisfactory public and private services, the unfair practices of the seller, including the right to adequate legal representation. These rights ensure they have access to benefits, a change of the products or services offered, refund of money for faulty products or the free repair of them.

6. The Right to Consumer Education

Customers should be adequately educated about the basic customer rights they enjoy. The consumers should gain acquisition of the skills they require to make informed consumer in the marketplace.

7. The Right to Consumer Representation

This consumer right advocates that consumers’ interests are heard, represented and considered in the formulation and implementation of economic and other policies affecting consumers. Also, businesses and brands should recognize customer's opinions and complaints during the development and manufacture of products and services. Consumers should be heard in law courts when they seek redress for any of the above consumer rights that were violated.

8. The Right to a Healthy Environment

Businesses have the responsibility to formulate policies in the production and regulation of goods and services that are hazardous to the natural environment. The consumers have the right to live in a healthy, pollution-free environment which will enhance the quality of their lives and their generations.

These basic consumer rights can be infringed upon anytime and consumers should be ready to seek redress always. These rights are applicable to both private and public organizations and enterprises. They are not limited to one sector alone.

My name is Sergeant. Monica Brown, originally from Lake Jackson Texas USA. I presently work in Support Company of 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Corps Afghanistan. The deal worth $132 Million United States Dollars and after we have all share the money I later realize $10,500,000.00 (Ten Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) ($100 Bills) which is my personal share of the deal, due to my status as a US Sergeant, I cannot be able to move this huge funds to my account in United States to avoid further interrogation or face any kind of probation by the U.S government and I packaged my own share in a briefcase and have sent it to the Red-Cross society, because there is no other way out to keep it with me here, so with the help of a Spanish contact working with the UN here (his office enjoys some immunity) I was able to get the package out to a safe location entirely out of trouble spot. She said she was running a Christmas sale and was giving 50% discount so I bought shoes from her as a gift for a friend. I made payment and wanted to buy another pair but changed my mind (Thank God I did).

Anyway, I asked a few days after she was supposed to have delivered and she said it was because I didn't make up my mind on the other pair so I asked her to send it like that.

Fast forward to January, I asked her why she didn't deliver the shoes. She initially responded with a greeting and when I asked her to refund my money, she blocked me on Instagram. I sent her a text and called but she had blocked me using TrueCaller as well.

Please beware. Her Instagram handle is @adb_outfit_ on Instagram
