We all know that decamping is the stock in trade of all politicians in Nigeria. We all know that teaming up with other parties to win elections is the what Nigerian politicians are known for. Why not criticize governors and NASS members who have severally decamped and now nestled in the APC? Or did BAT not team up too?

Reading through this piece, one cannot but spot certain similarities between the violation of the Nigerian political and democratic space and that of Benin.

Both have governments are pro-France

Both have governments that have systematically used state instruments of coercion to silence and cajole opposition elements into falling in line and where there's resistance, the agencies have kept such people out of circulation with arrests or being declared wanted.

Both have captured and subsumed critical state institutions like the judiciary under their control and influence such that the arms of government break their own rules and standards to appease their captors

Both have also heavily employed propaganda to confuse and deflate issues

The end result is the same for both countries: attempted coups after decades of democratic stability. What this teaches us is that coups do not happen out of the blue. They are a response to system abuse by politicians who feel they are above the laws they swore to uphold and abide by.

Where there is system abuse such that larger and larger sections of the society begin to lose trust in the system, the door of upheaval begin to open slowly.

The governments of both counties need to realise this and know that the failed coups will not be the last of them if they continue to abuse and degrade democratic systems and institutions.

The reason why the west have seen less military intervention in their political systems is because of how their institutions have been fashioned to be above strongmen.

If African politicians do not learn this, they will always find themselves back open to being kicked out by the same instruments they rely on to abuse the system
