Konquest: @Burob, thanks for your input.
I'm aware that the court invalidated the removal of Ambassador Oke.
That's where information management is key on the part of the President Tinubu administration and it's been average to me. A robust Minister of Information and regular or weekly engagements with the media and online on policies being implemented are key. Barack Obama had weekly YouTube feedbacks to Americans when he was President of the United States. Rapid information management is part of total internal security and with the rise of the Internet in the early 1990s and social media gaining more prominence since the 2000s, past Nigerian governments should have worked out how to bring those who misuse the technology to justice in the courts of law to face heavy punishments.
The UK riots that took place early this month leading to the looting of stores by White hooded gangs and the arsons carried out on a few mosques and buildings emanated through the spread of fake news.
The British government have already kicked in place the modalities to hold the owners of these social media platforms responsible for the spread of FALSEHOODS which can have dire consequences for the society.
All the best. Nice to know that we still have open minded critical thinkers on Nairaland. |

There's a lot of online hate speech, criminal defamation, and deliberate fabrication and spread of fake news using all known social media platforms such a as X, YouTube, FB, including this website. These relentless and criminal fabrication of fake stories online by well-known people and insidious secessionist sympathisers to defame others have the ability to destroy the democracy in Nigeria and lead to unintended consequences. Period. Many had already started cursing President Tinubu based on the rumor that former NIA boss Ambassador Oke was coming back. |

Car Talk › Re: See The Price Of Brand New Peugeot Saloon Car In 1984 and Its Worth Today by Burob: 7:31pm On Aug 26, 2024 |
casualobserver: In those days government workers had integrity. When my father bought his first Mercedes’, a Mercedes’ was around mid 7,000, his salary was probably 9,000. Even Adams oshiomole who was a textile worker narrated how he bought a new Volvo in the 70s. All civil servants were entitled to low interest car loans. The difference in price between a Volvo and a Mercedes’ was only a few hundred. There were some Volvos that cost more than a Mercedes’ 200 so it is only out of ignorance that you think a Mercedes 200 driver is a rich man or richer than a man driving a Volvo. It might even shock you that the made in Nigeria Audi 100 was more expensive than a Mercedes’ 200.
If you had any brains you will read what I wrote.
The duty on a Mercedes’ 230, 250, 280 and above in 1983 was 300%. The duty on a Mercedes’ 200 was increased to 75%, before then it was only 50%. The difference in duty on a 200 and a 230 was a lot. An senior civil servant can afford a Mercedes 200’, your ability to afford a car depended largely on the engine capacity, the landing ex wharf price of the car and the duty regime in force at the time. There was very little difference between the landing price of a 200 and a 230. Before 1979 and after 1983 duty was based on engine capacity. Between I think 1979 and 1983, they changed the formula for import duty from engine capacity to price. This made the 230 affordable for many people (because the difference in price between a 200 and 230 is not much) It was in 1983 that they went back to engine capacity and a 230 became unaffordable because the duty went from 50% to 300% while a 200 went from 50 to 75.
The reason only the rich could afford a Shagari in those days was because it’s landing cost was above N10,000 and like I said between 1979 and 1983 duty was based on price. Cars above N10,000 had duty of 100%. A Mercedes’ 200 and 230 had a landing cost below N10,000 so incurred duty of 50% ….very affordable for an honest senior civil servant. The reason the 230 became unaffordable after 1983 is that government reverted to engine capacity and the duty on a 230 went to 300% not even the old 100%. Ordinarily a top civil servant could afford a Shagari if not for the duty because landed in Apapa before duty the price of a 280Se was not more than N12000! It is duty of 100% and 300% that made it a car for the rich.
In fact until Obasanjo came into government, the official cars of top civil servants were Mercedes 200’….that is how affordable they were.
Below are the prices of a Mercedes’ 200 and Volvo in 1975 and the salary of a medium level senior civil servant for the year ( Icouldn’t find the salary of the most senior servant in that gazette) but a senior assistant surveyor on grade level 10 ( out of 16) can earn up to N6,500 per annum and you wouldn’t call him a top civil servant. Whereas a Mercedes 200 and a Volvo in that year was around N7,000. Also, a graduate starts on GL08, so GL10 is closer to a graduate than a top civil servant on GL14-16.
You didn’t need to be a thief to be comfortable as a civil servant in those days.
In those days even as a kid we always dreaded the budget speech because that would determine what and what you cannot afford that year because they were always changing import duties or banning items every budget speech.
Last picture is the price of a Mercedes’ in Germany in 1976. At a rate of 3DM to 1N (also deduct German vat of 11%). can see that the landing cost of a Mercedes’ 200/230 is approxx N5400 and N5600. What determined the price in Nigeria is what duty the government of the day is charging. Very affordable for a senior civil servant. Lastly I forgot to mention the problem wasn’t price, the problem was availability.
I don’t think you understand that life was very comfortable for the civil servants that is why their generation was blamed for not taking an active step in the governance of the country until things fell apart because they were comfortable though not rich.
The reason Mercedes assumed the reputation of a car of the rich was not the price but availability. There was a long waiting list because allocations were low. A Citreon cx was twice the price of a Mercedes’ 200 but you would not think a Citreon cx driver is a rich man. Which one is if you had any brains, why the insult? |

Nothing like rich man pickin. Senior Civil servants could afford Mercedes and Volvos. The principal of my school had a Mercedes. Most of them got car loans. A Mercedes then was just about the annual salary of a top civil servant.
You may e shocked to know there were cars that were more expensive than a Mercedes’. Like Citreon and even Volvo at a time.
In those days duty was based on engine capacity, ranging from 30% to 300%. so long as you stuck to a Mercedes’ 200 it was affordable. The difference between a Mercedes’ 200 and a 230 could be up to N10,000 Naira. It is people that bought 230 and above that were the rich people. Only rich people could buy a Mercedes Benz 200, 230, or 250 in 1982, maybe your pops was a top civil servant chopping money back then? Only the extra rich business men could afford the Benz 280, or Benz 500 aka concord also known as Shagari in 1982. |
Business › Re: NNPC Lacks Funds To Rebuild Old Pipelines – FG by Burob: 4:49pm On Aug 26, 2024 |
Veegil: According to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited does not have sufficient funds to rebuild old pipelines.
Lokpobiri, while speaking about the divestment of international oil companies and the need to ramp up production at the just concluded Energy and Labour Summit 2024 organised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria in Abuja, emphasised that Nigeria also needs to repair its pipelines, which he said are old, corroded, and expired.
He raised a valid concern when he said if the country can produce more than 1.7 million barrels of crude oil, the problem is how to evacuate it to the terminal.
In his words “Part of our problem is that pipelines that were traditionally transporting our crude were built in the 1960s and the 1970s and the lifespan is since over. We have identified that even when we can produce, evacuation is a big problem.
“The reason why pipeline vandalism is very easy to do is because the pipelines have all expired they completely corroded and so, anybody can just go and tap it and the thing is busted; but there are better technologies which are more expensive, there are better pipelines that other people are using in other countries, but they are not cheap, We also need to change our model.
“Now, the NNPC that is our joint venture partner, do they have the money to be able to replace these pipelines? I think NNPC will speak for themselves whether they have the money to be able to do that, and I don’t think they have,”
However, he called for the public-private partnerships to fix the old pipelines while also acknowledging for the private sector to come into any country to invest, they must have confidence in such a country, stressing that this was lacking in the past 12 years when there was no foreign investment in the nation’s oil company. Useless Things. |

casualobserver: Like I said it is possible due to scarcity. My parents worked for the government so any official cars were at official rates so I always knew the prices so I am 100% sure the official price was not more than N10,000.
Price control had been in existence since Gowon. The problem starting under Buhari was scarcity of cars as the plants were having problems securing forex for parts. That said my dad bought a brand new Mercedes 200 in 1983 and I know it cost N17,000 because he was complaining that if the car had landed a few months before he wouldn’t have had to pay the increased duty. So it is strange that a 504 would go for N20k in 1984 Rich man pikin. |
