Business / Planning An Advertising Campaign by BusinessLaw: 9:43am On Aug 06, 2019 |
Dear Entrepreneur, Any communication campaign needs to have clear, measurable objectives, whether it is designed to communicate product benefits or to support an event. In order to achieve these objectives, it must also be planned carefully. It is important to set campaign objectives for an advertising campaign. It is essential to identify a specific task for a specific campaign. This might be: Raising awareness of a company, product or service within a clearly identified target market. Communicating the benefits of a product or service. Generating leads for the sales force or retail network. To ensure you design a cost-effective campaign that delivers results, advertising objectives should be translated into precise, measurable targets. There are eight main stages in planning an advertising campaign. These include : 1. Define Target Market An understanding of your audience will influence the media you select and the creative treatment of your advertisement. To define your target market, you should ask questions like these: Who buys your type of product? Who influences the purchasing decision? How many potential buyers are there? Which prospects do you want to reach with the campaign and where are they located? What is the role of advertising in reaching the target audience? 2. Select Media There are four important factors to consider in selecting campaign media: How closely the audience profile of the medium matches your target audience. The comparative costs of reaching the target audience through different media. Whether the frequency of the medium matches the timing of your campaign. The creative opportunities of the medium for the communication of your message. 3. Plan Campaign Timing You have to consider a number of factors first in relation to the purchasing partner of your products: When are your customers making their buying decisions? If you are launching a new product, when will the product be available? How quickly will you be able to follow up the campaign? What is the next available publication or broadcasting date? How long will it take to produce the advertisement? 4. Decide Campaign Frequency Campaigns raise levels of awareness with each appearance and increase in number of opportunities to see the advertisement. Campaigns reinforce the impact of the message by repetition and provide an opportunity to communicate multiple or complex messages about the company or the product range. 5. Plan Creatives To achieve good results, you must develop a comprehensive creative brief. The main elements are : Campaign objectives Description of the target audience The main concerns of the target audience The main benefits of the product or service The media size and mechanical details 6. Develop a Response Mechanism Action is a vital ingredient of any advertising campaign and it is essential that you make it easy for your prospects to respond. First, decide which action they are to take: To place an order To arrange a sales meeting To request further information To visit your website To visit a retail outlet To try the product Review the cost, convenience and practicality of response options, including telephone, post, fax, e-mail and website. 7. Set a Budget A campaign budget will include direct, indirect and variable costs. Direct costs include the production costs of advertisement, including design, writing and production, and media costs. Indirect costs include the cost of setting up response handling, either by internal resources or an external supplier, and the management costs of planning and controlling the campaign. Variable costs include the cost of handling the campaign response. 8. Set Schedules To set a campaign schedule, work back from the launch date and work out how long each individual activity will take. COMMON MISTAKES Poor Targeting Without a clear picture of your target, market advertising can be wasteful. Failure to Integrate Advertising must be integrated with other related marketing tasks. Poor salesforce performance, for example could waste the contribution of a highly successful advertising campaign that provided a large number of sales leads. Inadequate Resources If companies try to achieve targets without committing the right budget, it will mean either that advertisement does not appear frequently enough to have impact, or that production quality is sacrificed. |
Business / Raising Finance by BusinessLaw: 9:12am On Jul 30, 2019 |
Dear Entrepreneur, Raising capital to grow a business can be challenging and time-consuming. There are many sources of cash, ranging from government grants, to bank loans, private equity, or a stock market flotation. The biggest problem is deciding which is best for you. GRANTS Grants are a highly cost effective way of financing a business. Grants are given to firms for a specific project, rather than for general business improvements. And they only cover part of the costs, so companies have to provide the rest of the money themselves. Most grants are cash payments, paid in arrears at key stages throughout the project. The biggest advantage is that they do not have to be paid back and they do not incur interest. BANK LOANS Individuals looking for start-up capital, or small firms seeking finance to pay for assets such as computer equipment, machinery or cars could look to their bank for the cash. But there are drawbacks : Banks impose strict terms and conditions on most loans. In some cases they may even insist you offer some sort of security. So you may be required to secure the loan against the assets of your business or even your home. Bank loans are not very flexible, so you may find yourself paying interest on funds you are not using. You will also have to make regular repayments, which may make it hard to manage cash flow if your customers do not pay their bills on time. PRIVATE EQUITY OR VENTURE CAPITAL Private equity firms and venture capitalists are looking to invest in business with strong management and good growth prospects. Private equity investors tend to invest in a business for the medium term. In practice this often mean three to five years, although they may invest for far longer or much shorter periods of time. Unlike lenders, they tend not to have rights to interests or to be repaid at a particular date. But they will want a share of the ownership and in some instances may demand an element of control of the business. They often insist that a non-executive is appointed to the board. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If you do your homework and bring in an external investor with experience in your sector, then you could be adding another dimension to your business by beefing up senior management expertise. And this can be invaluable in terms of brainstorming for new ideas. STOCK MARKET FLOTATION A stock market flotation involves selling shares in your business on one of the stock markets. It is important to remember that an initial public offering (IPO) is not an exit; it is the beginning of the next stage of growth for a business. Companies considering a stock market flotation must have strong management, a healthy track record, and excellent growth prospects. The main advantage of a stock market flotation is ready access to funds. Flotation may also add to your company’s credibility and raise its profile. It also provides an opportunity for business owners and other investors , such as private and equity backers, to realize their investment. Having your own traded shares may also help you grow business because you can offer shares as well as cash in any potential takeover bids CONCLUSION Choosing the right type of finance for your business is incredibly important. You must have a thorough understanding of what stage your business is at and what you need the money for before you pursue any of the options. A lot will depend on whether you are funding a start-up, buying an asset, seeking growth finance, or looking for an exit. Yours Sincerely, Kudi Konsult Partner in Progress

Business / Profiling Your Target Market by BusinessLaw: 11:16am On Jul 23, 2019 |
Dear Entrepreneur, A well-defined target market is the first element to a marketing strategy. Your target market is the specific group of people to whom you are trying to sell your products or services. Understanding your market helps determine your potential customer base. Unlike mass marketing, which offers one product to everyone, target marketing aims a few products at a specific type of person. Having known your ideal customer groups you will now need to be absolutely clear about what they want and need, and exactly what it is that you are going to offer them. This understanding will enable you to develop the specific marketing message and proposition that will most effectively sell the benefits of your product or service to them. If you get these messages wrong, then it is almost certain that your marketing efforts will fail, as your customers will buy from your competitors instead. Your product, service, or business proposition will have missed the target completely. Before you start to develop or choose your marketing strategy, it’s always worthwhile to speak first to a sample from your target audience. By doing this you will be able to check that your profile of your intended market has been the right one, and test your assumptions about what you think they want and why they could buy from you. Once you have spoken to a sample of your target market and you are satisfied that you have confirmed your assumptions about their needs, you will be in a position to create or adapt a marketing proposition to sell the benefits of your product or service to that audience With a thorough understanding of the needs of your ideal customers, you should then strive to create an offering and proposition based on four criteria that will give them a product or service that is: Exactly what they want from you Precisely when they need it In a way that is convenient for them At a price they can afford and are prepared to pay If you are not convinced that your sales proposition meets all of these criteria, then you will need to study the profile of your customers again and revise your offering. COMMON MISTAKES Failing To Test The most common mistakes made when targeting products and services towards specific users or customer groups are caused by not testing the assumptions you have made about your audience. You will waste valuable time and marketing budget if you launch a campaign towards an audience when you have not accurately identified who those customers are, and cannot precisely define what they want and why they could buy from you instead of your competitors. Lack of focus Do not buy into a list of unknown prospects, no matter how attractive it seems to get names of thousands of people you can blanket-sell to in the short term. Yours Sincerely, Kudi Konsult Your Partner in Progress
