PoliticsNIMASA Pays Tompolo N1.5bn Monthly – Ex-chairman by businessline(op): 9:20am On Jun 03, 2015
The pioneer chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Ahmed Tijani Ramalan, has disclosed that the agency pays the sum of N1.5bn monthly to the ex-militant leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), Mr. Government

Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, to protect the nation’s maritime areas.
Dr Ramalan, however, lamented that despite such gesture, the country still loses over 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily from the nation’s shores.

The former NIMASA chairman, who revealed this to LEADERSHIP in an interview in Kaduna, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to cancel the contract given to the ex-militant by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said, “Over 400, 000 barrels of crude oil are being stolen daily from our shores under President Jonathan; yet we had a government that has the Navy, the Army and the Air Force, and the government of Jonathan decides to hand over the security of our maritime waters to Tompolo at a very exorbitant amount of money.

PoliticsAmaechi Predicted Buhari’s Victory 2 Years Ago – APC Chieftain by businessline(op): 8:15am On Jun 02, 2015
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has said that the immediate past governor of Rivers State, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi predicted the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari, at the just concluded general election two years ago.

He said if not for the emergence of Buhari as President, former President Goodluck Jonathan and his loyalists would have arrested and jailed Amaechi for championing the defeat of his own brother from the Niger Delta region.
Eze, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the former governor foresaw the emergence of Buhari as President before he made history as the first Nigerian to defeat a sitting President in an election.

He said, “When it comes to believing in the abilities of President Buhari, I am yet to see anyone who can rival Amaechi.

His love for Buhari and strong belief in his ability to take Nigeria out of the woods is like an obsession.

“I can still vividly remember how Amaechi predicted Buhari’s emergence as President during the early days of APC and long before the issue of who would fly the party’s flag came up.

When on 9th September, 2013, my appointment as the National Publicity Secretary of the defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) was announced to Nigerians the only brief I received was the 30 minutes encounter I had with Governor Amaechi.

“During that encounter he kept repeating that whenever General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) accepted to fly the flag of the mega opposition.

Political party in the country, the unseating of President Goodluck Jonathan and PDP would become a reality.

“I was deeply impressed by his strong belief in General Buhari. It was based on this that I went boldly into the field and with the cooperation of the G7 Governors and other leaders of the New PDP; we were able to dismantle what was the famous and largest political party in Africa (PDP).”

Eze, who is also the senior special assistant on Media to the chairman of APC in Rivers State, stated that Amaechi pursued Buhari’s emergence as APC presidential candidate with evangelical zeal after New PDP joined APC.

The APC chieftain said, “This obsession explains why Amaechi did all within his powers to ensure that Buhari emerged as the flag bearer of APC during the Lagos Convention and, as the Director General of the Buhari Campaign Organization, worked even harder to ensure the ouster of former President Goodluck Jonathan during the March 28, 2015 presidential election.”

The former national publicity secretary of the defunct New PDP commended Buhari for his vision for a greater Nigeria as espoused in his Inaugural Address and his early steps since he assumed office last Friday, May 29, 2015.

He said, “Nigerians should be patient and pray for Buhari’s success. He is the best man for the job but he cannot do it alone, hence the need for all of us to give him the necessary support to deliver the dividends of democracy.

Crime10 Countries With Highest Rape Crime. Guess The No.1 Country by businessline(op): 10:18am On Jun 01, 2015
Here is the list of top 10 countries with highest rape crime. You would be amazed to read that the most developed countries like U.S., Sweden, France, Canada, UK and Germany are the most immersed ones in this crime.

10. Ethiopia

Ethiopia is estimated to have one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. A report by the UN found that nearly 60% of Ethiopian women were subjected to Sexual violence. Rape is a very serious problem in Ethiopia. The country is infamous for the practice of marriage by abduction, with the prevalence of this practice in Ethiopia being one of the highest in the world. In many parts of Ethiopia, it is common for a man, working in co-ordination with his friends, to kidnap a girl or woman, sometimes using a horse to ease the escape. The abductor will then hide his intended bride and rape her until she becomes pregnant. Girls as young as eleven years old are reported to have been kidnapped for the purpose of marriage. Also the Ethiopian military has been accused of committing systematic rapes against civilians.

9. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s security forces are still raping and torturing suspects. There have been recent allegations that rape and torture by the Sri Lankan security forces have continued four years after the civil war ended. The UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence found that 14.5% of the sample of Sri Lankan men had perpetrated rape at some point in their lives. 4.9% had raped in the past year. 2.7% had raped another man. 1.6% had took part in a gang rape. 96.5% of the men who had raped experienced no legal consequences. 65.8% didn’t feel worried or guilty afterwards. 64.9% of rapists had raped more than once, and 11.1% had raped four or more girls or women.

8. Canada

It is an Amercing continent and the total reported cases of rape in this country are 2,516,918. These are only six percent of the total rape cases. It is reported that over one in three women had experienced a Sexual assault and that only 6% of Sexual assaults were reported to the police. According to Justice Institute of British Columbia, one out of every 17 women is raped, 62% of rape victims were physically injured, 9% were beaten or disfigured.

7. France

Rape was not a crime in France until 1980. Laws reinforcing women’s rights and safety are relatively recent in France. The law making rape a crime dates back only to 1980. Earlier decrees were based on 19th century moral codes. A law on Sexual-harassment was approved in 1992 and one on moral harassment was passed in 2002. The last bill to fight violence against women was passed last year. Government studies show there are 75,000 rapes a year in the country. Only about 10 percent of the victims filed complaints. France is at the 7th position with the total reported crime of 3,771,850.
6. Germany

An estimate of 240,000 women and girls has died up till now in Germany because of this crime. Germany is on the number six in the highest rape crime with the figures of 6,507,394 in this year which is really a big figure. German Catholics have allowed the morning-after pills for the victims. The country moving forward in technology is actually moving really backward in humanity.

PoliticsUbah To Buhari: Remove Fuel Subsidy, Probe Those Behind Shutdown by businessline(op): 7:59am On Jun 01, 2015
As President Muhammadu Buhari settles to the responsibility of leading the country today, the managing director of Capital Oil, Mr Ifeanyi Ubah, has called on him to remove fuel subsidy as well as probe the marketers behind the nation’s recent shutdown.

Ubah was speaking with select journalists in Abuja where he appealed to Nigerians to support the deregulation in other to get petroleum products at the lowest price.

He said, “I have always been of the view that we should deregulate so that we can cut out corruption but unfortunately Nigerians didn’t take it from Jonathan.

“I urge President Buhari to take a bold step and deregulate the oil sector. He is not a stranger to the sector having being a former minister of petroleum. He will be respected for taking the step. There’s no point paying subsidy when Nigerians are not benefiting it. The president will be doing the right thing if he deregulates the sector so that the product will be sold at cheaper rate in the future.”

Although he confirmed that marketers were being owed by government, he, however, maintained that the agitation for the payment of their monies was not properly handled.

He said, “Indeed the marketers are being owed large sums of money and I am one of those being owed but I believe that dialogue should have been the choice of the marketers, especially considering the state of the nation. It was unprecedented in the country for oil marketers to go on strike for up to four days. What I expected was that there would have been a warning strike before a total shut down.”

While disclosing that the decision to shutdown the country was not a unilateral one, he stated that the few marketers who were behind the shutdown should be probed.

“It was unpatriotic for them to shutdown the country. If this is not properly investigated, there could be a repeat of such. Marketers should know that they are not labour unions; there was an agreement with government to pay them gradually, but they disregarded the agreement and unpatriotically threw the country into crisis,” Uba said.

He revealed that he pulled out of the oil marketers’ strike because his company was not consulted before the marketers’ decision to shut down operations was taken against national interest.

He said: “My facilities store products for the Pipelines and Petroleum Marketing Company (PPMC) an arm of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which means such products belong to the Federal Government.

“For a facility like ours, we should be considered before taking this position, what if people storing product in our facilities sue us? They have the rights to take their products, what if PPMC sue us or cancel our contract? We need to ask these questions.

Uba said he decided to resume fuel supply because he could not bear the horror of Nigerians dying in hospitals, and banks shutting down and consequently putting the masses in hardship, even as he revealed that his company had to rescue telecoms giant, MTN, by supplying the diesel, a development he said prevented communication across the country from experiencing a major downtime.

While expressing disappointment that many Nigerians have attributed politics to his gesture, he stated that he has no regret for his action, saying he will be part of those that will ensure Nigeria works well no matter the criticism.

He further advised the Federal Government to assist investors interested in building refineries in the country, noting that failure by government to give the right support to players in the oil and gas sector in spite of their capacity to run the industry successfully had painful made Nigerians go through avoidable hardships in their country.

Citing an example with his firm, he said, “Go to Capital Oil you will see over 19 vessels floating, for three years none has worked for one day and these are investment made in line with government policy. Who will give you facility when you don’t even have turnover?”

“I would like to see the incoming government take a good look at the sector and I will be willing to advise because I have suffered so much in line with government policies in the downstream sector of the Nigerian economy,” he added.

Uba recalled a number efforts he had made in the past to support what he believed were the right policies to help the economy grow irrespective of who the leader is, adding “I don’t side anybody, I go straight to the point and I am not a sycophant for Buhari or for Jonathan.”

PoliticsHow We Tackled Cabals In Oil Industry – Diezani by businessline(op): 9:01am On May 29, 2015
Outgoing Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, in this interview with Arit Essanga, a freelance journalist with the African Free Press, in London, explains the intricacies and how she tackled the cabals in Nigeria’s oil industry. Excerpts.

Thank you for granting me a few minutes of your time for this pressing discussion about the future of policy evolution in Nigeria. But I want to quickly talk about the fuel scarcity that has come just weeks before the hand-over to the new administration.

The time of my appointment as Minister of Petroleum Resources 5 years ago was a time when the nation was in the throes of many years of continuous fuel scarcity and the abandonment of our fuel facilities. This was having such an adverse impact on the masses, especially in terms of livelihood and quality of life.

This situation certainly affected me and my household. I was one of those who went out to queue at filling stations and what left an indelible mark on me was the plight of the many, many women who were queuing for this essential commodity for their families! We are looking at time when women where losing their lives as a result of adulterated products as kerosene stoves were exploding all over the country! So the problem was not just about getting access to the product but also purchasing the right quality products to ensure the safety of their households of my fellow women.

PoliticsBring Your Investments Home – Obi Of Onitsha Charges Ndigbo by businessline(op): 7:58pm On May 21, 2015
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, has lamented that while the Igbos have over 70 per cent of their investments outside their homeland, non-Igbos had not deemed it necessary to come to the South-East to invest.

The royal father, who spoke yesterday at the inaugural conference and presentation of a two-volume book: “Igbo Nation: History and Challenges of Rebirth and Development” at Igbozurume Unity Centre in Enugu, advised his people to act on the many good ideas they have.

While enjoining Igbos to think home instead of developing other lands where they sojourn, Igwe Achebe observed that the spread of Igbos and their investments in other lands have attracted them envy and hatred as was seen in the recent Xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

He was emphatic that the Igbos must develop their domain educationally, commercially, as well as direct politicians on how they want to be governed.
