Politics / I Cant Eat My Own Food- Ameachi by bymigokeph: 10:11pm On Sep 15, 2013 |
WHEN THE TABLES TURN In 2010, the former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Austin Okpara and a few Rivers politicians attempted to open a factional office of the PDP at Ohaeto Street in D/Line Port Harcourt after internal wrangling with the PDP executives backed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Not only was the place sealed off by the police and the roads barricaded for security reasons , 12 people found there were arrested, detained and charged for cultism. The Certificate of Occupancy of this property was also revoked immediately by the Rivers State government. At that time, the commissioner of police had the ears of Governor Rotimi Amaechi who spear headed and defended the action of the police. Fast forward to 2013, Rotimi Amaechi and his crew found themselves in a similar situation, but this time on the other side. After attempting to open a factional office in Port Harcourt, the police sealed up the place, but in this instance nobody was arrested, but rather the road leading to factional office was barricaded In other to forestall a breakdown of law and order. Note that this road also leads to former entrance (now back gate) of the Rivers State government house which was no longer in use for almost seven years(since after the Peter Odili regime) Suddenly, governor Amaechi decides to go through this route on the same day the police sealed up and barricaded the road. The police officers acted professionally by not bulging to the whims and drama of politicians. The governor who so much desired the drama steps down from his convoy and insists on passing through the route to the government house. This led to the current headline we are all about to hear today " Police bars governor amaechi from entering government house". The gullible Nigerians won't ask, why will the police bar a sitting governor from entering his office? Has there been a coup? Our governor forgot how he dealt with people who tried similar actions a few years back. Then he had the police machinery at his beck and call . Today he has become a victim of his own actions. The difference is that his factional supporters weren't arrested and treated like common cultists like he treated others some years ago. Somebody once asked me if Governor Amaechi was Nigerian president and a governor is squaring up with him like he does with the President. I reminded the person of how local government chairmen are treated in Rivers State on the slightest allegation of disloyalty. See the news of the 2010 event here entitled: “Ex- Deputy Speaker Condemns Arrest of Factional PDP” www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2010/08/10/ex - deputy-speaker-condemns-arrest-of-factional-pdp/ Writer/Source: K. b4 u rush 2 post anything or topic on NL pls be sure dat ur choice of words or sentence conotes d info u r sending across. READ THIS PH: # HardFactsPH with @Kofi_Bartels on 92.3 LATEST ON ASUU STRIKE FG Directs ASUU To Go Back To Classroom Despite the resolve on Thursday by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to continue the on-going strike until all agreements signed in 2009 are reached, thefederal government, on Friday, ordered that lecturers should go back to classrooms after it had disbursed the sum of N30 billion for earned academic allowances. The directive which was given by the secretary to the government of the federation, Sen Anyim Pius Anyim, during a meeting between the federal government and the vice-chancellors of the 61 public universities, stated that "Government, hereby, urges every staff of the nation's universities to return to work as all issues are being resolved." He said with particular reference to the contentious issue of earned allowances, every staff of the universities that is so entitled should verify his claim with the university council and accordingly get paid as "from the foregoing, it is obvious that government has demonstrated sufficient commitment to the implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement. "After series of discussions, government has now provided N30 billion to support the university councils in settling the earned allowances. The amount will be disbursed to the various university councils which are in the position to know who is entitled to how much after verification." He revealed that "Traditionally, universities pay this to deserving staff but because of the amount which ASUU now claims as arrears, government has decided to assist the university councils to pay" as government did not receive any computation of amount involved until February, 2013. "By this computation, ASUU is claiming N92 billion as arrears for three year's payment based on percentage rage of between 15 and 20 per cent of personnel cost." While there was consensus that revitalising the tertiary institutions is of critical importance to the nation, Anyim noted that "when put together, the amount of funds from the budgetary and non- budgetary sources that goes into the sector is quite huge but without corresponding impact. While acknowledging the contributions of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, Senior Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and other stakeholders, Anyim reiterated the government's resolve 'to bringing the students back to school and appreciated the patience of parents and students as government is making every effort to revitalise the university system." It would be recalled that on July 2, 2013, ASUU declared what it called "total and indefinite strike" over issues it says has remained unresolved pertaining to an agreement it reached with government in 2009.
