Politics / Re: US Imposes Visa Restrictions On Nigerians Who Disrupted 2023 Election by Cafanchan: 10:48pm On May 15, 2023
Add up all 5 states & you’ll be shocked who finished first in that subset of 5. That’s why he is President-Elect because he finished close 2nds in those states & a couple of others he lost. What is hilarious with this wailing is this is not the first time this winning template is happening in Nigerian political history in a 3-5 way race. Shagari won the the presidency with an even less % in 1979 than Tinubu in 2023. Of 19 states, Shagari came single-digit % 3rd in Lagos, didn’t get 25% in Kano let alone win but in many other states he was consistently 2nd.

Indeed the Atiku campaign spokesmen had predicted that was their path to winning this 2023 election as they were certain states they would lose, they would come 2nd. The only shocker was Tinubu ended up being the Shagari of this cycle.

You listed 5 states that Tinubu didn’t win but claim a candidate who came low single digit % distant 4th in 7 states the one who won. By the 6 zones, Obi didn’t even crack 10% in the richest vote-bank region of NW & barely hit 10% in the NE. By contrast, Obi’s SE was the only region the top-2 Tinubu & Atiku didn’t hit 10% of votes cast but the fact the total votes in the SE barely hit 2million & was a less than a 3rd of the total NW votes meant the SE ‘shellacking’ wasn’t as damaging to the top-2 as Obi’s 5% of 6.5million in the NW. That is why your boy came 3rd.

Did you even read what I wrote up there? Quit the victim-playing. You are from 1 of the 3 powerful tribes. No one stopped southern leaders from setting aside money & hiring ad-hoc staff to help reach everyone faster than INEC’s limited staff can? Is Alimosho LGA, effectively the most populated LGA in Nigeria, with a single stable registration point in the SE? Or is there any LGA in the SE with a population of 5million to claim this is specifically targeted at your region? Is Alimosho majorly populated by SE folks?

OfoIgbo:

Yet, in the NE and NW, the same INEC has enough resources to register even under-aged kids and even go to people's homes to register every illiterate in the house.

In the south in general and SE in particular, they don't have enough resources to register the eligible citizens, talk-less of registering under-aged voters

Bro, quickly go and apply now if you have not yet done so before it's too late. It's a must to apply ahead unless you want to defer your admission till later. PTDF only give sponsorship supports . They don't give admission offers.

Thanks! I’ll tell the person affected.
Politics / Re: Pvc :igbos Outside The South East Are Many by Cafanchan: 1:00pm On Jul 07, 2022
Just quit playing the victim. It’s an institutional problem with INEC in registering voters due to limited fulltime staff. It’s not peculiar to the South-East. Alimosho LGA in Lagos with a population of 5million people has only one stable registration point somewhere in Ikotun. You can imagine how difficult it is to register there with the population surge.

INEC has a limited budget so only so much they can do across the country. We should be asking state governors, LG chairmen & other leaders how they’ve partnered with INEC to boost registration numbers in their domains. Southern leaders & politicians have refused to mobilise for voters registration like it’s done up north to assist INEC, then have their minions online claim it’s tribal victimization going on…

Maybe it’s northern leaders making Abia have ~20% registered voter turnout too along with the dismal voting %s across the whole south…

OfoIgbo:

The bolded is also the case in the east.

Ask yourself one simple question.

Why did INEC acknowledge that there is a huge spike in the number of people that want to register in the SE, but still when INEC comes up with the figures of those that have registered, the number coming from the SE remains unremarkable?

With the last issue that you raised, remember that I commented that the powers that be, did not see Edo, Bayelsa, Delta as threats.
But with the coming of Obi, and the enthusiasm in those states, watch out and see how such administrative problems will keep cropping up, simply to keep down the number of votes from those states also.

We all have to pray that Obi emerges, and overhauls INEC, ensuring that deserving people from the south who have been systematically and stylishly disenfranchised, are registered.
Millions of southerners, especially in the SE, are being prevented from registering by subtle man-made obstacles meant to discourage or hinder them from registering.

Maybe you have comprehension issues or it just flew over your head. What I meant is a potential President Tinubu has no powers to increase state taxes such as transport taxes collected by agberos. That wouldn’t be under his purview. So why use state taxes ‘collected by agberos’ as you put it as a point to condemn a candidate you don’t like. Even the VAT is being challenged by Wike & co as being a strictly states tax.

So whoever becomes president will be dealing with strictly federal taxes like company tax & co. Criticise Tinubu all you want as is your right but it’s mischievously misleading at the very least suggesting as in your OP that a President has any business with state taxes.

I can see typing trash is your hobby. Personal income tax is paid to state internal revenue boards. The LIRS in Lagos. Educate yourself on what tax is and what it's not first, Mr intellectual.

Hello everyone,

Please I just want to confirm if a prospective PTDF scholarship applicant is supposed to secure admission to any picked course/schools from the PTDF recommended options or the PTDF secure the slots down already for would-be scholarship beneficiaries.

Most Nigerian ‘intellectuals’ have little idea of what Nigeria is beyond proving they know big English or grammar.

How does this writer make the elementary error of not knowing Personal Income Tax (PIT) or the transport taxes that Oluomo, Auxilliary & co hustle are state taxes & federal taxes are mainly from Company Income Tax (CIT)

Even Value Added Tax (VAT) is subject to li to gation currently at the Supreme Court as it should be a state tax.

wittytezzy:
With Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's emergence as winner of the APC presidential primaries and former Vice president Atiku Abubakar having clinching the PDP ticket few days earlier, the stage is yet again set for another pointless presidential election. So pointless that the most patriotic advice I will give you as a Nigerian is that on the day of the election, lay your bed well. If you have a PVC, remember to place it under your pillow and sleep.

Because?

Tinubu or Atiku, nothing will change. Neither will deliver a better Nigeria than this one they have been heavily involved in managing (or mismanaging if you like), for decades now. An old president with old ideas? We've seen this movie before. In fact the plots are curren

tly unfolding before our eyes in form of wanton massacres, rising inflation, ASUU strike, heartless sleaze in high offices, you could go on.
But I know the elections will hold as planned.

And either of the two parties/persons will come out victorious baring any unforseen developments.

"But we do have a choice to vote a third force".

Oh, do we?

No we don't.

Next year's presidential election is firmly between APC and the PDP. Our own version of the devil and the deep blue sea.

The differences between both is like six and half a dozen. Any other political party that makes it to the ballot is anything but short of six. Dem no reach. Even Tinubu in his victory speech on Wednesday was only concerned about further keeping PDP out of power. You could judge from his speech, all other political parties are adjudged by him as non-existent. Or at best, not in the conversation.

OBIdients, Peter Obi's supporters, will tweet and rant, but none of that will be visible or heard in your streets. You expect Sowore and his AAC to come out with another aluta-style campaign. But this is not an SUG election. Very far from being a child's play.

Elections are a contest of popularity. Democracy only sympathises with saints the majority don't know

That's why we're still stuck with the devils we know.

Ones that have held the country by it's jugular.

They both rallied to install the incumbent president in 2015. Both adjudged to be corrupt in the court of public opinion. The kind of corruption that doesn't get probed at the court of law. God be with you as you hope in either running a corruption-free administration.

What either will do to better the security situation of the country is yet to be seen but in terms of approach to economic management, Atiku's trademark policy appears to be privatisation. As vice president between 1999 and 2007, he spearheaded an economic policy that was notorious for seeding of government stakes to the private sector. Being an ever-present presidential candidate, the privatisation agenda seemed to have followed his campaigns ever since he left office as VP.

Tinubu's economic blueprint seemed to be hinged on taxation. His reign as the emperor of Lagos has seen the state become the largest IGR generating state in Nigeria. Whether through formal channels like the LIRS or it's touts running after Danfo to tax drivers.

If in life, death and tax are the two certainties, under a Tinubu regime, it becomes one: to be taxed to death

Have you like I am now, imagined an Abuja where MC Oluomo's boys are all over the place running after public transports for levies?

Even as the nation is now distraught and depressed, soon campaigns will intensify, and they will package their manifestos with the catchy phrases they have often rinsed and repeated; a la to combat insecurity, improve economy, fight corruption, improve health, power and education, build social infrastructures. You already know the vibes.

By February when it's time to hit the polls, after a lot of power play, media propaganda and heavy financial inducements aka mobilisation. It will be only APC and PDP's campaigns that'll be in our faces. All these mushroom parties would have been electorally phased out or compelled to take the back seat where they belong

And then another tested and failed, old and frail president will be legitimised and installed by the electorate.

For now, the biggest electoral elephants are about to lock their trunks. I hope the masses (pun intended) beneath are prepared for the suffering ahead

May the Lord save us from us.

Properties / Ikoyi 360 Towers Collapse: Structural Engineers Blame On Design Alterations by Cafanchan: 3:23pm On Nov 18, 2021
Ikoyi Building: Structural Engineers Blame Collapse on Alteration of Original Design
Dike Onwuamaeze

The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) has attributed the cause of the collapsed building on Gerald Road, Ikoyi, Lagos State, on November 1, to several variations on the original design of the building that was initially planned to be six-storey, but was later increased to 21-storey. The NIStructE’s view was contained in statement obtained yesterday, which was signed by the President of NIStructE, Dr. Kehinde B. Osifala

Osifala explained: “There are clear indications of several design brief changes on the project and the engineering and management of these changes appear to have been seriously inadequate. The building that collapsed was initially designed for just six floors, and later to 12 floors, before this was further changed to Fifteen 15 floors.

“It could not yet be established the adequacy of any properly designed and documented further revision to the eventual (and tragically, final) Twenty-One (21) floors that was being implemented and which collapsed.”

He also said the preliminary investigation on the collapsed building showed that, “there are also indications that more than two structural engineering design firms worked on the project at different times.

“The preliminary investigation also revealed some evidence of structural inadequacy in the construction and that signs of some structural distress had already started to show within certain elements of the building. Some remedial measures were already being undertaken to address some of this. The method of implementation of this was not in accordance with sound structural engineering practices.”

Furthermore, Osifala explained that, “lack of proper quality control and quality assurance measures and processes during the construction was evident becoming noticeable as seen in the poor quality of concrete materials and workmanship observed during the examination of the collapse debris.

“All the above findings, which are very significant from the structural engineering point of view, need to be investigated further during the detailed investigation stage so that all factors related to the cause or causes of the collapse can be truly established and the appropriate lessons identified and implemented.

“We expect that the various committees that are being set up will have full access to much more information (such as all the structural drawings, the calculations, documents prepared and submitted for planning approval and for construction, material test results, site instructions and records, records of meetings, more eyewitness accounts, etc.”

The institute stated that a thorough and comprehensive structural integrity appraisal should be carried out on the other two buildings respectively that are on same site, in the light of the already gathered preliminary information about the noted inadequacies of the collapsed building.

Osifala advised members of the public to always engage only competent and capable registered professionals on their projects, adding that “it is extremely important that the appraisal is carried out by qualified and registered structural engineers who have the requisite experience.”

He stated that a ‘Structural Integrity Appraisal’ should not be limited to carrying out some non-destructive tests to evaluate the properties of the concrete, but should be “comprehensive and all-inclusive structural engineering evaluation of the entire structure, which is tailored to suit the full objectives of the appraisal. It is only after this that a clean bill of health can be confirmed for the building.

“The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) maintains a register of its registered members and can be consulted on any matter of structural importance or concern,” he said.

It further stated that the institute waited this long in order to gather verifiable information and carry out physical assessment on the collapsed building before going public with its views.

“We are now in a position to make factual statements and provide guidance to the general public that will hopefully be enlightening but also reassuring that structures once well designed and implemented with the use of the appropriate professionals should remain safe throughout their service life.

“As these findings remain preliminary until the recommended comprehensive investigation is carried out, and the outcome of the various government’s and institutional panels have been determined, we and should not in any way jeopardise the outcomes of the more detailed investigations being organised by various professional and regulatory bodies, it is our view that the outcome of our preliminary investigation will give a general indication of what likely led to the unfortunate incidence,” it added.
