CareerMy Internship In Unilever by Calebsworld(op): 8:58pm On May 22, 2020
I know this is long overdue but it is timely because it is exactly one year after my 12 months internship with Unilever Nigeria.
I will try my best possible to answer similar questions that I have had to answer previously from intending interns, on how I got to work with one of the best FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) companies in the world as well as what to expect by working with the amazing cross-functional teams in Unilever Nigeria.
Well, nothing works outside the Grace of God who brings out the best in us when all our human efforts may seem to have failed. My special appreciation will also go to Mechell Chetty (referred to as the ‘’People’s escalator’’ in the Unilever world) who recommended me for the internship and has remained my mentor over the years.
I started my internship on 4th June, 2018 after going through 3 days onboarding process where the various heads/representatives took us through functions in their respective departments. It was one of the most exciting 3 days of my life as I got to see and interacted with workers handling the global brands of Unilever. I was also opportune (during the induction period) to meet with highly experienced personnel who moved from other companies (like Friesland, Guinness, Cadbury, Nestle, Ranbaxy, etc,) and joined Unilever. I must say that the 365 days of my internship enhanced my career development and growth in my endeavours thereafter.
My First Day at Work After the 3 Days Induction
I met with the HR Business Partner who introduced me to my team members and showed me my workstation. Every business has its own culture and ethics as well as assigned Workplan given to every intern. But I shall use this avenue to dwell more on the experience garnered during my one-year internship. This I believe will be worthwhile for persons at some point in their lives who may which to undergo the internship programme.
Always go for what you want
I have always had the flair/interest in marketing functions so I requested to be posted to the Marketing Department where I showed keen interest in Digital Marketing that was just evolving in very few companies at the time. Digital marketing has a great capacity/spread to reach out to more people online using various channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google Ads, etc) with a very prudent Marketing budget.
This was put effectively into practice as most of my day to day activities revolved around reviewing and executing the Marketing activities and campaign to meet the objectives/goals.
Have the CEO Mindset
The CEO mindset is to fit into the corporate goals/objectives of the company and take ownership (as a stakeholder). Bring out the best of every task assigned to you and be proactive. Look for creative ways of doing things and most importantly know your numbers at the back of your hand.
Know the week you are in; know if you are meeting the marketing forecast for the week; month or quarter; Judge it against the previous year; call the Field Sales Manager and ask what is going on in the field; ask if you could provide any support and relay this to your Line Manager by providing possible marketing activities to drive sales and deplete the stocks in the Key Distributors outlets. Ask the Digital Agencies why they are optimizing for Impression and not the Reach; why your CTR rate is less than the recommended CTR?
Why thinking like a CEO, there are internal and external functions you would need to harness together to make your job a success irrespective of the department you are in. There are times you will be faced with the decision to help the company cut cost and still meet the business goals.
Make Connections outside your Team
During my interview chat with my Line Manager, I asked her expectation of me on my job. ’The ability to take a bold decision and work with little or no supervision’’ was her response.
She said further that I should have a cross-fertilization of ideas with other units within the Marketing Department for a broader scope/horizon. According to her, my team maybe be faced with new challenges that other teams would have overcome. So, it is okay to reach out to them. Most times they are more than happy to help.
Till date my relationship with most of my colleagues on the team is very cordial.
Speak up
You may just have that suggestion/idea that will make the difference. So, be bold and speak up as it is important to share knowledge with others and jointly grow the business. People actually want to hear you out and the team is always ready to support any laudable idea.
You are here to learn
You maybe given a workplan (3+1) scheduling your work to be done over the course of your internship like I was given. You should therefore acquaint yourself with the necessary soft skills and have a basic knowledge of the Microsoft package such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc you will need in your various departments.
Do not be afraid to ask a question. There are terms you may not understand. I remember having a jotter for all the marketing terms some of which were strange to me. It will take some time before you master some of them though just like it happened in my case.
If your date to submit a task is pretty close, you can always reach out to other intern(s) for support.
Do things that will stretch you beyond your supposed limit.
I recall a challenging task giving to Unilever Nigeria by the Lagos state government requesting of 2,000 pieces each of the 5 SKUs of Pears. Which was passed to my team (responsible for the branded products repacking and distribution) They were eager to get the products delivered to them two days before the new administration come on board. My team successfully delivered the products using our accredited distributor and was paid within the 48 hours deadline and the key distributor confirmed the payment thereafter.
If given the opportunity to intern once more. I do choose Unilever again, but this time not as an intern, but as a brand manager.
For those looking forward to working at Unilever, I recommend the Unilever Future Leaders Programme is a great place to start. Believe in yourself.
Always go for what you want!
Cheers.

HealthNafdac Press Release On Plastic Rice by Calebsworld(op): 7:40pm On Dec 30, 2016
JOINT PRESS BRIEFING BY THE AG.DIRECTOR GENERAL, NATIONAL AGENCY FOR FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL (NAFDAC) MRS. YETUNDE ONI AND THE COMPTROLLER GENERAL, NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE, COL. HAMEED ALI (RTD) ON THE QUALITY OF THE SUSPECTED FAKE RICE CONSIGNMENT SEIZED BY NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE AT NAFDAC CORPORATE HEADQUATERS ABUJA ON 29TH DECEMBER, 2016

PROTOCOL

It gives me great pleasure to address you today, 29th December, 2016 on the quality of the suspected fake rice seized by the men of Nigeria Customs Service. The rumour was that plastic rice was in circulation and a consignment had been seized by Customs.

Following the report of the seizure of the "suspected fake rice", by men of Nigeria Customs Service, the Agency swung into action by sending team of inspectors to the office of the Customs Area Comptroller, Federal Operations Ikeja, Lagos to draw samples from the seized consignment for Laboratory analysis. The product, branded as “Best Tomato” was in 25kg pack size, without NAFDAC number, no batch number, no date markings and no details of the manufacturer. The preliminary result of the analysis was conveyed to the Honorable Minister for Health, Prof Isaac F. Adewole and was made public on 22nd December, 2016 whilst awaiting the comprehensive result. I hereby this day the 29th December 2016 present the full Laboratory report as follows:

1. Floating - Negative
2. Sedimentation - Positive
3. Cooking - Normal
4. Odour - Normal
5. Colour - Off-white grains
6. Moisture - 13% (within specification)
7. Pre-ashing - Normal
8. Ash - 0.6% (within specification)
9. Lead and Cadmium - Not detected
10. Aerobic mesophillic count - 2.8x105cfu (above maximum limits)
11. Mould - 5.1x103cfu- (within specification)
12. Coli form - 7.5x103cfu (above maximum limits)
13. E-coli - <3cfu (within specification)
14. Packaging - Does not conform to NAFDAC pre-
packaging Food labeling regulations 2005

Based on the above Laboratory result, the product is not plastic but rice contaminated with microorganisms above permissible limit, hence the seized rice consignment is UNSATISFACTORY and therefore unwholesome for human consumption. The consignment upon handover by the Nigeria Customs Service shall be destroyed.

I wish to thank the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service and his men for the timely interception of this unwholesome rice. NAFDAC in collaboration with Nigerian Customs Service will continue to intensify vigilance and surveillance activities at all entry ports and boarders.

May I use this medium to appeal to the General Public to report any suspicious case(s) about all NAFDAC regulated products to any of the NAFDAC offices across the Nation for prompt regulatory action. I appeal for continued support and cooperation of all Nigerian to team up with NAFDAC in our concerted effort to deliver on our mandate of safeguarding the health of the Nation.

AgricultureRe: Food Processing Or Increase In Agriculture? by Calebsworld(op): 9:30pm On Aug 10, 2014
rareman: I will want to stand on the side of food processing: but truely one need to look at both w holistically, you cannot isolate one and leave the other. From experience here in nigeria, I realise that farmers go through a lot of stress to sell their farm produce. There is no system in place here to help a farmer produce then hands off sales. So you see a farmer produce here, plan his logistic then beg market women to buy at reasonable price.
Processing earns more for a farmer, and for economic development it encourages serious entrepreneurship, more people are employed to cater for farm produce. My 2 cent though Hope it made sense
.....that was helpful.thanks bro.

Nairaland GeneralSave A Life Today...safety Tips. by Calebsworld(op): 7:45am On Nov 02, 2013
In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...
After reading these 9 crucial tips, forward them to someone you care about.
It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :

The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, do!

2. Learned this from a tourist guide.

If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.
Toss it away from you.... Chances are that he is more interested
in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse..
RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car,

kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy..
The driver won't see you, but everybody else will.
 This has saved lives.

4. Don't sit in your car!

Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc.,
and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!)
The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to
get in on the passenger side, put a weapon to you, and tell you where to go.
AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF,
Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF!

Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car.
Your Air Bag will save you.
If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it.
As soon as the car crashes bail out and run.
It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat.
B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door.
Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the
women are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side.
If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall,
or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.

Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.
(This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN!

The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then,
it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic:

STOP
It may get you raped, or killed.
Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played
on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often
asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..'

The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

10. Water scam!

If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people competely turn on all your outside taps so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.
