A Nigerian grandmother identified as Funmilayo Olalere, residing in Amondo village, near Ile-Ife, has been arrested for assaulting her grandchild living with her.

It was gathered that the suspect beat the victim with a broom, which damaged her eye.

Rather than taking the victim to a hospital after she sustained the injury, the grandmother was said to have opted for self-treatment and applied urine on the eye.

The Osun State Government on Wednesday said it ordered the arrest of the woman.

It was said that the suspect had been referred to the Osun Women’s Clinic, where she would undergo psychotherapy pending her arraignment in court.

The Osun State Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Olubukola Olaboopo, said her ministry got information that the suspect, popularly called ‘Iya Ibeji Olowo’ used a broom on the child.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on February 16, 2021 arraigned one Obetta Hillary Chinweuba before Justice R.O Dugbo Oghoghorie of the Federal High Court, Enugu on a four count charge of obtaining forgery, impersonation and obtaining N4,000,000.00 by false pretence.

Chinweuba who pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him by the Commission, allegedly swindled his victim under the guise of transferring to him, a fiat for the sale and distribution of the 2018 Ministry of Transport badges and emblems for commercial vehicles in Enugu State.

It was a false claim as he had no such fait but forged the letter-head paper of the State Ministry of Transport to convince his victim.

A 24-year-old man, Ahmed Fadulilahi has been arraigned by an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2.1 million from an eatery.

The accused person allegedly committed the offence in December 2020 at Osogbo.

The prosecutor, ASP Taiwo Adegoke told the court that the accused person stole the sum of N2,178,500 (Two million, one hundred and seventy-eight thousand five hundred naira) from Captain cook bakery in Osogbo.

The offence committed contravened section 390 (9)(6) of the Criminal Code CAP 34 vol 11 law of Osun state Nigeria 2002.

However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the allegation slammed against him.

Defence Counsel B.O Odutola prayed the court to grant his client bail in the most liberal terms.

In his ruling, Magistrate Isola Omisade granted the accused person bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate said the sureties must be residing within the court jurisdiction and the police should verify the addresses.

The case was adjourned till March 24, 2021, for ruling.

A Senior Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has ordered the remand in prison custody of 45-year-old Mgbechi Weke for alleged rape.

Weke, a staff of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), allegedly raped his 16-year-old step daughter on January 13, 2021 at Rumuakwude community in Emuihua Local Government Area of the State.

He pleaded not-guilty to the single count charge of rape preferred against; he was denied bail by the Presiding Magistrate, Gomba Osaro, on the grounds that the charged against him is a capital offence punishable by life imprisonment if convicted.

The defense counsel, Matilda Okheehoo had earlier applied for the bail of the accused person, citing section 36(5) of criminal justice act 1999 which presumes him innocent.

She also told the court that the defendant has a credible surety that can stand for him.

The Prosecution, from Center for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, a Non-Governmental Organization passionate about the right of a child, Jane James objected to the bail application, expressing the fears that the accused might harm his victim and her mother if admitted on bail.

A Divisional Police Officer identified as Ayodeji Adepoju has allegedly shot an operative of Oyo State Security Network Agency also known as Amotekun.

The incident, we gathered on Saturday occured at Igbon Police station in Ogbomoso geo-political zone of the state.

It was gathered from sources that the DPO at Igbon Police Division, Surulere Local Government Area, Mr. Adepoju reportedly shot an operative of Amotekun on Friday.

Our correspondent gathered that the DPO ordered the arrest of two Amotekun Corps for arresting herdsmen whose cattle were grazing on a farm in Gambari area, for destroying crops.

The aggrieved farmer, whose farm was plundered by the cattle, was said to have reported the case to Amotekun Corps.

The herdsmen were arrested by Amotekun operatives.

It was gathered that some of the herdsmen were said to have reported the case to the DPO who ordered the arrest of the two Amotekun operatives, Mr. Jenyo and Olatunji Mayowa, who were investigating the case.

It was gathered that the DPO said the Amotekun was not set up to arrest herdsmen but to go after armed robbers.

A 101-year-old grandma has been discharged from Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State after she recovered from COVID-19.

The grandma was on admission in a private hospital for treatment before the medical personnel of the hospital noticed she was showing some symptoms of COVID-19 like the acute onset of cough breathlessness, fever and malaria before she was transferred to OAUTHC.

These disclosures were made in a statement by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Ile-Ife, Prof Victor Adetiloye, on Thursday to newsmen.

A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, Lagos on Wednesday ordered that a 35-year-old security guard, Patrick Akpan, who allegedly beat his three-year-old daughter to death be remanded in custodial centre.

The police charged Akpan with manslaughter.

Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka did not take the plea of Akpan for want in jurisdiction.

Nwaka ordered that the case file be duplicated and a copy sent to the Lagos Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Nwaka adjourned the case until Feb. 23 for DPP advice.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that Akpan committed the offence on Dec. 27, 2020, in Jakande Estate, Lekki phase 11, Lagos.

Three persons have been killed by gunmen suspected to be assassins in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The deceased were said to be holding a meeting when the assailants numbering about five stormed the area and went straight to the hall.

Police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said bodies of the deceased were deposited at the mortuary for autopsy while efforts were on to apprehend perpetrators of the heinous act.

The two herders – Muhammed Abu and Musa Saliu- said they came into Ondo from Ilorin, Kwara State.

It was gathered that a farmer in the community alerted the Amotekun Corps after the herders allegedly attempted to shoot another farmer for asking them to leave his farm.

The Federal Government has stated arrangements are ongoing to replace the Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) with the National Identity Numbers (NIN).

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Dr Isa Pantami, who disclosed this to newsmen shortly after a tour of telecoms operators and NIN licensees in Abuja, said President Muhammadu Buhari has been briefed on the on-going NIN registrations.

Pantami who said the President was happy with the conducts of the exercise so far, added he had also briefed the National Economic Sustainability Committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on the imperative of replacing BVN with NIN.

Pantami argued that while BVN was only for accounts holders with various banks, the National Identity Numbers are for all Nigerians irrespective of their status.

To ascertain the smooth registration of Nigerians, the Minister visited the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) registration Centre in Gwarinpa, the Zonal Headquarters of MTN, Glo Mobile and Airtel in Maitama as well as a Private operator, OMNL, Nigeria.

Accompanied by the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Prof Garba Danbatta; Director-General General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr Aliyu Aziz, the Minister said he was impressed by the strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols at all the registration centres.

Responding to challenges encountered by those with the BVN data trying to upgrade with NIN data, Pantami said:” The challenge is that the BVN records may not be 100 percent the same with NIN but what is most important is that the NIN is the primary identity of each and every citizen, including legal residents.

“BVN is a policy of a bank and has not been established by law, NIN is the only mandatory number and the primary identification of our citizens and every other identification is secondary.

Justice R. O. Dugbo Oghoghorie, of the Federal High Court, Enugu on Wednesday February 4, 2021 convicted and sentenced the duo of Dominic Ozulu and Michael Ogbobe to thirty five (35) years imprisonment each over One Million, Five Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira(N1,520,000.00) land fraud.

The convicts were arraigned on 18th May, 2017 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Enugu zonal office on a five-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretenses, forgery and uttering.

In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Michael Ani Ikechukwu, called four witnesses and tendered twelve exhibits.

Justice Oghoghorie, after reviewing the evidence before the court, found the defendants guilty as charged and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each in all of the five counts preferred against them by the Commission.

Operatives of the Uyo zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on February 3, 2021 arrested one Edidiong Emmanuel Inyang, a fake medical doctor who specialize in employment scam.

He was arrested along Ritman University Road, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.

Inyang ran into trouble when his brother-in-law, one Charles Bassey Udonde, whom he had offered to help secure employment with an International Oil Company, petitioned the Commission.

According to the petitioner, in 2016, the suspect collected N2.6million from him for Health and Safety Environment 1, 2 and 3 Certificate, Police clearance, Governor's Recommendation Letter, Basic Diploma in Occupation Safety, Job Processing Fee, amongst others.

Narrating further, the complainant alleged that the suspect asked him to bring in more people as he had "slots" and wanted to help more people secure employment.

Convinced, the petitioner invited involved more people including his girlfriend, Idongesit Effiong Ekanem. The suspect successfully defrauded his friends over N10million for non-existent jobs.

Investigations into the matter reveals that the petitioner's ordeal started in 2015 when the suspect met his wife (the complainant's sister).

He had presented himself as a medical doctor and staff of University of Uyo who recently got employed in an International Oil Company and wanted to settle down.

The Lagos Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has secured the conviction of one Temitope Awobeku, who was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court, Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, for an alleged N200million fraud.

His journey to jail began when the EFCC received a petition in December 2019 accusing Awobeku of defrauding a 96-year-old man, Prof. Joseph Edozien and several others victims from whom he fraudulently obtained about N200million.

He was arraigned on July 22, 2020 on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence contrary to Sections 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and Section 287 of the same Law.

He pleaded "not guilty" to the charges, setting the stage for a full-blown trial.

In the course of the trial, the EFCC presented two witnesses and tendered four exhibits, while the defence called one witness.

Gunmen on Friday night attacked Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, located at Umulowe autonomous community area of Imo State and killed two policemen who were on duty.

The hoodlums also injured three other cops who resisted them from gaining access into the headquarters.

Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that the incident caused panic in the area.

This is even as security operatives drafted from the command’s headquarters in Owerri, had taken over the area.

A source told The PUNCH that the hoodlums who operated in a vehicle met stiff opposition from policemen who were on duty when they tried to gain access into the police premises.

Displeased by the cops’ action who resisted them, the hoodlums opened fire at the officers, killing two policemen while three were shattered by their gun bullets.

Our correspondent also gathered that one of the hoodlums was killed in the gun duel but the hoodlums drove off with the corpse of their member.

The source said, “Two policemen died in the incident. Three were wounded. One of the hoodlums was also killed but they drove off with him. The policemen who were killed were the ones who repelled them. It was an unfortunate development.”

Justice E. A. Obile of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State has convicted and sentenced Sa'adu Isa to two years imprisonment for illegal dealing in petroleum products without a requisite license.

He was convicted on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 after pleading "guilty" to one-count amended charge, following his arraignment by the Port Harcourt's Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Sokoto State police command has confirmed the killing of five persons by unknown gunmen suspected to be armed bandits in Adamawa village of Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto State.

The command Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Muhammad Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed this to our correspondent in a telephone chat.

According to him, over one hundred suspected armed bandits on motorcycles invaded the village, killed five persons, burnt down six shops and eleven houses, adding that not less than five other persons sustained gunshot injuries.

He also confirmed that the bandits also attacked Samaye village and rustled livestock while stealing other valuables belonging to the villagers.

Dead Bodies Killed By Boko Haram Refused To Be Given To Their Family, Instead Nigerian Army Plans 'SECRET BURIAL'

The Nigerian Army will on Tuesday gave soldiers recently killed on the front in the fight against insurgency a ‘secret and undignified burial’, multiple military sources told reported.

In the last one month, Boko Haram terrorists have targeted soldiers, waiting in ambush for them.

About three soldiers were killed on Friday when the insurgents engaged the military in a four-hour battle to take control of Dikwa town in Borno State.

The attack happened few hours after Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai handed over to Major General Ibrahim Attahiru as the Chief of Army Staff.

The gun battle, which started around 6:00pm and lasted till around 10:00pm, claimed many casualties, including soldiers.

On January 22, 2021, the group ambushed and fired machine guns at a Nigerian army patrol in Borno State, killing seven soldiers and injuring others. Also, an ATV and ammunition were captured by the gunmen.

The attack occurred barely five days after the gunmen activated seven IEDs against a Nigerian Army convoy of Armoured Personnel Carriers and other vehicles, escorted by a foot patrol in Gorgi in Borno State.

A Nigerian clergyman whose name is unidentified, brought a revelation to light during his recent sermon, alleged that the late UNILAG head of department (HoD) failed his daughter for two years because she did not allow him to have his way in her forcefully.

“One of my daughters was being harrassed. It was the University of Lagos. The lecturer was on her. He said he would manage to sleep with her before she would pass the course. A man old enough to be her father,” he said.

“Very wicked evil man. And the girl said, ‘I’m a child of God. I’m born again’. And he said, ‘You, you know how many of you I’ve dealt with? You won’t leave my department’. I will make sure you fail that course.

“And the course is compulsory such that if you don’t pass, you can’t move on. He failed her the first time. She tried to fast and pray. Nothing changed. She failed her second time. By the rule, she would have to withdraw.

“She came to see me. How can one filthy old man want to sleep with my daughter because he’s a lecturer. I’ll forget I’m anointed and cut off your head. She started crying. I stood on my feet and said, ‘O God, judge this matter.'”

This is so unbelievable and surprising. A pregnant woman known as Samantha Spicer was left in a suprised state after scan appeared to show her unborn baby was a wearing a face mask in her womb. This happened days before she tested positive for Covid-19.

The 34-year-old pregnant woman, was nervous to attend her 12 week scan but her worries soon turned to giggles when the scan appeared to show her unborn baby wearing a mask in the womb.

Days later, the mobile hairdresser tested positive for Covid-19 and whilst they initially thought the photo was just a light hearted coincidence, Samantha said she now feels the unusual photo had a deeper meaning.

Nigeria Senate’s Chief Whip and former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu will on Tuesday be arraigned before Justice Inyang Ekwo’s Federal High Court for a ‘de novo’ trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in the last twelve years prosecuted Kalu from the Federal High Court up to the Supreme Court and as sentenced to 12 years imprisonment before his lawyers in mid 2020 secured judgement for a ‘retrial.’

Tuesday’s trial would have Senator Orjin Uzor Kalu docked before trial Justice Inyang Ekwo on money laundering related charges to the tune of N7.1 billion.

The lawmaker, who governed Abia State from 1999 to 2007 was earlier found guilty and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.
